A Killing at Ball's Bluff: The Harrison Raines Civil War Mysteries, by Michael Kilian

Harrison Raines is caught in no-man's-land - and suspected of murder.

The messenger finds Harrison Raines in one of the finest gambling halls in Washington. As usual, Raines is losing. Union intelligence demands his presence immediately - it's a matter that could affect the outcome of the Civil War - but Raines delays. He's holding four eights, and as a Southern dandy who renounced his family to serve the Union government as a secret agent, Raines can't resist a bet. But as soon as he finishes this hand of poker, Raines will be gambling with more than cards - he'll be wagering his life.

Abraham Lincoln is a close friend of Colonel Baker, and he orders Raines to guard the colonel on the battlefield. But in the chaos of Ball's Bluff, Baker refuses to take cover from enemy fire. When Baker is cut down by a Confederate riding a white horse, Raines is a prime suspect in the murder and must clear his name or risk being a fugitive from both sides of the Civil War.

A Killing at Ball's Bluff is the second book in the Harrison Raines Civil War Mysteries, but you may enjoy the series in any order.

Teriffic historicalmystery
By A Customer
In 1861, the initial encounter of the Civil War is fired at Fort Sumter and the South wins the first real encounter at Manassas. Harrison Raines, son of a Virginia plantation landholder who owns slaves, broke with his family and now resides in the federally controlled Washington DC. Area. In order to prove his loyalty to the northern cause and his anathema towards slavery, Harry allows Pinkerton to induct him as a captain in the newly formed Secret Service.

Few know what Harry does for a living as he acts as if he is a southern sympathizer. When he is almost killed, Harry retreats to his horse farm to wait safely for further instructions, which comes from his friend Templeton Saylor. Harry must go to Ball's Bluff to guard Colonel Baker, who dies anyway in the heat of battle. Harry is accused of treason and jailed, but escapes. He knows he is a man without a country neither the Union nor the Confederacy wanting him unless he can prove his innocence or guilt.

Although this novel is labeled a "Harrison Raines Civil War Mystery," the tale is really more a spy thriller than a who-done-it, though detective elements are in the tale. The plot contains agents, double agents, traitors, and an assortment of support cast abetting the spies. Actions run the gamut with dishonor not uncommon. Michael Kilian's novel contain some of the most fascinating war drama scenes, vividly and authentically described so that the audience can picture Spielberg saving Harry Raines.

A Wanted Man
By Ruth Thompson
The protagonist Harry Raines sees Col. Edward Baker the man that he is to protect killed. Of course Harry is found with the body and he becomes a wanted man by the North. The Confederates also want Harry. He has no choice but to solve this murder. I found the first of the book rather slow but I liked the mystery intrigue of Kilian's books. He also uses a little humor to entertain us. By Ruth Thompson the author of "The Bluegrass Dream"

A Little Long Winded, But Still a Great Mystery
By Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers
Harry Raines is finding life in Washington during the Civil War difficult. A Southerner opposed to slavery, he tries to stay as neutral as possible, even with his new job in the Secret Service. But trouble seems to find him. Someone's shooting at him on the street. Then he's assigned to guard Colonel Edward Baker, one of President Lincoln's best friends. This is a nearly impossible task in the midst of battle, but when the Colonel is killed in cold blood, Harry finds himself accused of the crime. Escaping from jail, he must stay one step ahead of his former co-workers to clear his name.
This novel, like its predecessor, provides a fascinating look at life during the Civil War. Real people are liberally sprinkled throughout, and I greatly enjoyed meeting their fictitious personas. I especially like the way Lincoln is portrayed in his few appearances. The fictitious characters are interesting as well. The plot itself seems to loose its way at times, but all the pieces to come together for a climax that includes some interesting twists.
With the characters being agents and counter-agents, the book takes on the feel of a spy novel at times. Yet, the plot includes enough interesting twists to make it a good mystery as well. Anyone interested in this time period will greatly enjoy this series.

The words mother, daughter and sister are considered obscenities in Alyria, where women are forced to wear concealing cloaks called follyblankets to keep them from the sight of men. Aeris isn't the only girlchild being raised as male, but when she catches the attention of Prince Regent Daelyn Avigdor, the game she's been playing her entire life suddenly becomes that much more dangerous. Brought to the White Palace to serve as the Prince Regent's fetchencarry, Aeris finds herself caught in a world of luxury and intrigue -- companion to a prince yet constantly afraid of being discovered as female. When rumblings of revolt against those who insist on keeping women subjugated begin to rock Alyria, Aeris’s loyalty to her prince is tested. Soon enough, the entire country is at war -- and Aeris learns she’s not the only one with secrets.

very informative, can't put down kind of story. Makes me appreciate being a woman in 21st century. I now realize how far we have come, even though this is fiction, i know it is based on history. This story is very colorful, funny in parts and sad in parts. Not recommended for young minds, on many levels.

Beautiful love story and story about how women continue to be persecuted.
By Amazon Customer
I loves the details. I had read about the country in her other books. This book provided an explanation about why women were treated as nothing and why the men serviced each other. It put it all in perspective.

I have read many Hart books, and this was the first one to disappoint. Feels like a book that was tossed off in a weekend. Similar themes have been written about and dealt with much more effectively by other authors. Glad I didnt spring for the paperbook.

From Publishers Weekly
Anderson's story of inventor Hugh McVey, which he originally published in 1920, the year after Winesburg, Ohio , is considered by many to be his finest novel.
Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From the Back Cover
'Poor White' captures the spirit of small-town America during the Machine Age.

About the Author
Sherwood Anderson (September 13, 1876 – March 8, 1941) was an American novelist and short story writer, known for subjective and self-revealing works. Self-educated, he rose to become a successful copywriter and business owner in Cleveland and Elyria, Ohio. In 1912, Anderson had a nervous breakdown that led him to abandon his business and family to become a writer.

At the time, he moved to Chicago and was eventually married three more times. His most enduring work is the short-story sequence Winesburg, Ohio, which launched his career. Throughout the 1920s, Anderson published several short story collections, novels, memoirs, books of essays, and a book of poetry. Though his books sold reasonably well, Dark Laughter (1925), a novel inspired by Anderson's time in New Orleans during the 1920s, was the only bestseller of his career.

He may be most remembered for his influential effect on the next generation of young writers, as he inspired William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, and Thomas Wolfe. He helped gain publication for Faulkner and Hemingway.

Excellent tale of America's transition to industrialism!
By A Customer
If you thought that Winesburg Ohio was good, then you'll absolutely love Poor White. It has a similar feel as Winesburg, except this story revolves around two main characters, Hugh McVey and Clara Butterworth. Poor White tells of how the spread of industrialism affected the agrarian towns of the Midwest.

An important document of America's changing landscape.
By Duane Simolke
Sherwood Anderson captures America's change from agrarian to industrial, with insightful and poetic writing. This is a perfect companion to Anderson's best-known work (Winesburg, Ohio) as well as to the many non-fiction books on the same topic (The Machine in the Garden, etc.).

no title
By C. L Wilson
" The machines men are so intent on making have carried them very far from the old sweet things."

This quote from the book sums up its core philosophy very nicely. Surely this is Anderson's best book, also depressing, but not as much as "Winesburg, Ohio", and quite sweet in its depiction of a life now lost. Anderson must have deeply loved the country and its farms to have described it so wondrously. And his skill in depicting even the most minute of characters is quite remarkable. This ability to draw out of the smallest things such vivid detail, is really outstanding. I liked this book very much and would almost wish to return to those "old sweet things". He really abhored the machine age and, as in "Winesburg", all his people, especially Clara and Hugh, are abysmal at trying to connect with their fellow human beings. Created with a lot of suspense.

Benito Cereno is a novella by Herman Melville. It was first serialized in Putnam's Monthly in 1855.

In developing the novella, Melville drew almost exclusively on the memoir of the real Captain Amasa Delano, whom Melville depicts as the main protagonist and focal character. Delano recounts how in 1805, his vessel Perseverance encountered the Spanish Tryal (not to be confused with the 17th-century British Tryall), a ship whose slaves had overthrown the Spanish sailors. The narrative of events in the novel closely follows the actual event.

Review
''In our own time of terror and torture, Benito Cereno has emerged as the most salient of Melville's works: a tale of desperate men in the grip of a vengeful fury that those whom they hate cannot begin to understand.'' --Andrew Delbanco, author, Melville: His World and Work

''The noblest short story in American literature.'' --Edward J. O'Brien, American author and short-story anthologist

''Superficially, this is a story of slavery and mutiny on the high seas, but beneath the adventure-charged plot lies Melville's examination of that subject which so fascinated him: the confrontation of extreme forces of good and evil in the universe.'' --Masterpieces of World Literature

About the Author
HERMAN MELVILLE (1819-1891) was born in New York. Family hardships forced him to leave school for various occupations, including shipping as a cabin boy to Liverpool in 1839--a voyage that sparked his love for the sea. A shrewd social critic and philosopher in his fiction, he is considered an outstanding writer of the sea and a great stylist who mastered both realistic narrative and a rich, rhythmical prose.

Two movements
By H. Schneider
It is around 1800. An American sealer on the South Chile coast meets a Spanish slave ship in disarray. Captain Delano from the US ship goes on board the Spaniard and finds things rather disorganized, to say the least. The Spanish captain is not well. His story is about storms and scurvy and fever, which decimated most of the whites and many of the blacks on board and destroyed most of the boats that the ship had. Delano is of best intentions and tries to help, but in the course of time begins to have grave doubts about honesty and capability of the Spaniard, while he is positively impressed by the behaviour of the blacks on the ship.

Finally we find out that the Spaniard has been a hostage all along, that the slaves have mutinied and taken the ship, killing most of the whites in the process.
The US ship overwhelms the mutinous ship and takes it to Peru, where the mutiny survivors are put to trial.

The narration has two parts: the experience of the American captain boarding the mutinous ship without understanding what happens on it, and then the recapitalution 'what really happened' mainly via the court deposition of the title hero Benito Cereno, who is the Spanish captain.

I would like to put aside all considerations of the moral question whether a mutiny of slaves on a transport ship is the same as a mutiny of sailors. Obviously not, and I see no need to go into this aspect further. Of course the narration takes us in on the side of the slave owners. Leave it at that, it is history.

The fascinating part of the story is the first one, when we follow Delano in his blind attempt at understanding what is happening on the ship in distress. He sees what he sees with the eyes of his personal expectations and prejudices. He is an optimist who likes to see the good side in people. Hence he is happy about the jolly good behaviour of the blacks on the ship. He is disappointed in the less than virile stance of the Spaniard. He never even half suspects the truth. Rather he thinks that the captain may be a pirate in collaboration with the black population on board.
This story is a deeply pessimistic one. We can not understand the world. Our benevolent assumptions are likely to be disappointed. The truth is worse than we can expect. Sunshine is an illusion.

The most intense short story ever written
By Marius Philip Escolar
A most powerful story by a most powerful author. The suspense will force you to skip pages, just to see what all the "building up" of emotion and doubt is all about. Highly satisfying. Don't be surprised to find yourself thinking about this story for weeks after you've completed it.

Follow the Leader
By Gary Griffiths
If you want a taste of Melville's brilliance, but aren't up to the task of slogging through 600+ pages of "Moby Dick," try "Benito Cereno" - a masterpiece of mystery, suspense and intrigue. But, as with Melville's white-whale classic, "BC" ultimately climbs the peaks and plumbs the depths of human spirit and human depravity on multiple levels while taking the reader down a twisting and puzzling path. That so much can be crammed into a "short story" (well, perhaps a novella) illustrates the author's true genius.

It is 1799, and an American sea Captain Amasa Delano has harbored at St. Maria island off the extreme southern coast of Chile to take on fresh water. Sighting a ship without colors on the horizon, Delano with a crew take the whale boat to investigate, finding a near-derelict Spanish slave ship drifting aimlessly on a calm sea. Upon boarding, Dalano finds the ship's captain, Benito Cerino, near death and the ship's human cargo - men, women, and children - unconstrained topside. Cerino is constantly tended to by "Babo," a young Spanish-speaking slave, who never leaves the captain's side, catering to his every wish - the extent that the ship's half-starved inhabitants can accommodate. Cerino tells Delano a harrowing tale of violent storms encountered after leaving Buenos Aires en route to Lima, rounding the Cape and encountering two months of deadly calm that made navigation impossible - drownings, scurvy, and lack of water decimated the crew. Delano finds Cerino's tale dubious, especially since so few of the Spanish crew have survived, taking a much lower toll on the slaves. More troubling is the relationship between Babo and Cerino, which Delano considers beyond odd. The trusting and possibly naïve Delano silently questions Cerino's motives, and several times fears for his own life, each time to be subsequently placated, writing his fear off as mere paranoia induced by the freakish conditions on board the vessel. Tension builds, the enigma grows, and by now, the reader, puzzled by the contradictions, is undoubtedly tempted to jump ahead to see where Melville is taking us.

Melville's writing falls just short of epic poetry, and as such, "Benito Cerino" requires some work and concentration. Much of the jargon is unfamiliar nautical terms or 19th century prose that is now archaic. But the diligent reader will be rewarded with beautiful prose than spins a surprisingly surrealistic atmosphere - an authentic portrait of life at sea at the turn of the 18th century while capturing the period's views of race and slavery. Melville never preaches or cajoles, is never heavy handed, but instead weaves complex relationships and cultural issues so deeply in the fabric that multiple reads will certainly yield fresh insight and new meaning - the kind of story that invokes that "did I really read this?" moment. In short, a powerful short story that deserves more attention - my candidate to replace - or at least complement - "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" or "A Tale of Two Cites" on high school readers' list of required classics.

Deadly Shoals (Wiki Coffin Mysteries), by Joan Druett

Wiki Coffin plays many parts on the U.S. Exploring Expedition---sailor, linguist, navigator, and, as half-Maori, cultural go-between. But then the brig Swallow reaches the coast of Patagonia, an area infamous for its rough gauchos and revolutionary spirit, and he must take on his other role, that of agent of U.S. law and order.

A New England whaler shows up, desperate to find the devious trader who has cheated him of a thousand dollars and a schooner. Wiki is assigned to find the missing ship, only to follow a trail of clues to a dead body, half-buried in a hill of salt, its skull picked clean by vultures. The adventure unravels in the impoverished village of El Carmen de Patagones, where the threat of French invasion is imminent, and business is at a standstill under the orders of General de Rosas, the tyrant of Buenos Aires.

Wiki must risk both life and reputation in pursuit of a vicious and determined killer who has set his sights on another target: the U.S. Exploring Expedition itself.

From Publishers Weekly
New Zealand historian Druett's uneven fourth Wiki Coffin whodunit (after 2006's Run Afoul) finds half-Maori navigator and linguister Wiki investigating theft and murder in Patagonia. It's January 1839, and Wiki, as sheriff's representative aboard the U.S. Exploring Expedition ship Swallow, agrees to help outraged whaler Captain Stackpole, who claims to have been roundly cheated. Trader Caleb Adams took Stackpole's money and vanished, along with the schooner Stackpole was buying. When Wiki goes looking for Adams, he finds only his corpse. The bill of sale has been stolen from Adams's store and a clerk murdered as well. Gauchos, Indians, revolutionaries and adventurers flock across the beautifully rendered landscape. Druett's meticulous research shows in the vivid characters (including historical figures), but irrelevant passages of lush detail smother the plot, letting it resurface only in a late and hurried blurt of exposition. A better balance between detail and story would have made for smoother sailing. (Dec.)

From Booklist
Maritime mystery fans will welcome the return of Wiki Coffin, the half-Maori linguist traveling with the U.S. South Seas Naval Exploring Expedition of 1838. Those familiar with the series will not be surprised that, once again, Wiki is called upon to perform duties extending well beyond his official capacity as ship's translator. This time around he must act as a de facto sheriff when a New England whaler is cheated out of both $1,000 and a schooner. As the representative of U.S. law and order for the expedition, Wiki penetrates the infamous Rio Negro region of Patagonia in search of a thief and murderer. Druett continues to pepper her suspenseful plots with the same type of authentic seafaring facts and lore that so distinguished the novels of the late Patrick O'Brien. Flanagan, Margaret

"There was another grave danger lurking in the fog."
By K. M.
Wiki Coffin is a versatile crewmember of one of the ships belonging to an American scientific expedition that set sail from Norfolk, Virginia. The little fleet that had the Pacific as its goal, moved down along the eastern coast of South America first (no Panama Canal yet). DEADLY SHOALS, the fourth "seafaring mystery" in Joan Druett's Wiki Coffin series, traces the course actually sailed by the U.S. Exploring Expedition ("Ex Ex" for short), 1838-1842, commanded by Naval Lt. Charles Wilkes. However, Wilkes' real fleet sailed with six ships. Druett adds a seventh, the fictional Swallow, a brig on which Wiki (also fictional) is normally berthed.

The real six-ship expedition left Virginia with 346 men, and before it ended 28 men died and two ships were lost. There were numerous legal travails including courts martial and the death of one sailor in the Fiji islands that lead to massive reprisal against the natives. Lt. Wilkes became an increasingly overbearing, petty, arrogant tyrant, making the lives of the ships' crews a torment. Druett has chosen her source material wisely; she can mine tons more from documented history for future volumes.

In the opening chapter of DEADLY SHOALS, Swallow lies off the coast of Patagonia, "with the shoal-ridden estuary of the Rio Negro on the western horizon," temporarily detached from the rest of the expeditionary squadron. Abruptly a strange ship, New England whaler Trojan, comes alongside her and in short order Wiki, whose many talents include speaking a number of languages and being a deputized lawman, is ordered to accompany Captain Stackpole, master of said whaleship, to the mainland to find and apprehend a thief. In the course of his investigations, Wiki undertakes a journey upriver to massive salt dunes, rides poncho-clad with gauchos, and gets caught in a refugee stream panicking over a French invasion. He also discovers two dead (murdered!) men, and a lot of questions, but no filched thousand dollars and schooner. A very interconnected and deceptive plot builds from there....

DEADLY SHOALS offers, an unusual character as the "detective/hero." Talented, nimble William "Wiki" Coffin is an illegitimate half-Maori son of an American sea captain -- a father into whom Wiki runs quite a bit during this voyage. Readers pick up tidbits about Maori culture and language from New Zealander Druett.

The sections of DEADLY SHOALS set at sea outshine those on land. At times, the plot slogs along while Wiki treks about with Stackpole. Publishers Weekly said about an earlier book in this series that Druett succumbed to pedantry on occasion. The same might be said of DEADLY SHOALS. The plot, it might also be said, is so tightly and cleverly plotted that it tests believability. But by and large, the author succeeds in telling a story that winningly entertains, sustains suspense, and goads curiosity about the real expedition. I'm looking forward to the next Wiki Coffin entry.

Wiki's Final Mystery
By Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers
Wiki Coffin and the rest of the expedition fleet arrive at the Rio Negro, the final Atlantic landfall before they sail around Cape Horn and head toward Antarctica. But as they are arriving, they are hailed by Captain Stackpole. The man has just bought a sealing ship, but when he went to pick it up, it had vanished. And so Wiki is pressed in to service to try to find it.

Naturally, they started with the trader who sold the ship in the first place, but Adams has been missing for several days. Following a faint trail, they discover Adams' body. Who killed him? And will they ever track down the missing ship?

This series has always been a strange mix of maritime lore and mystery. The author loves ships, and it shows, although at times it gets overdone when the story bogs down in the details. Still, the plot here was strong with quite a few clues coming back in the end to help put everything into place. Wiki and the rest of the crew continue to entertain as well.

Since the book came out in 2007 and another hasn't, I doubt we'll get any more adventures with Wiki, which is a shame because the book definitely left things open for an interesting sequel. Still, if you enjoy historical mysteries, give the series a try.

`I can say nothing of use to you'.
By Jennifer Cameron-Smith
Wiki Coffin is the linguist and captain's clerk on a US exploring expedition which has reached the Rio Negro. The Rio Negro, in 1839, is a remote area of Patagonia famous for rough gauchos and revolutionaries.

Wiki has another role, though, as a sheriff's deputy and it is via this role that much of the action in this novel unfolds. A whaleman in search of his stolen schooner sparks a search which leads to the discovery of murder. Solving the murder(s) (and finding the missing schooner) leads Wiki on a number of adventures involving an assortment of scoundrels. Along the way, the reader acquires all manner of important nautical information and factoids, including the role of [...] in Polynesian navigation.

This is the fourth of Ms Druett's novels to feature the inimitable Wiki Coffin. I've not yet read the other three, but I will certainly be looking out for them. Wiki himself is a thoroughly likeable character and is a superb protagonist in this particular setting. Ms Druett herself is a well-known nautical writer and historian, and a number of her books (both fiction and non-fiction) are on my reading list.

An excellent and informative guide to Rome, Italy. The photos are nicely composed, but not on glossy paper.
By Tom Brody
LONELY PLANET ROME by Abigail Biasi and Duncan Garnood is a 327-page our guide about Rome, Italy. In my own opinions, the problem in planning a visit to Rome is NOT wanting to know what there is to see and do, but instead the problem is trying to decide which of the many, many, many, very famous buildings, sculptures, and paintings can be seen in a reasonable period of time. The chapters track various districts of Rome, and these are named below, going from north to south:

Villa Borghese and Northern Rome (pages 181-192);
Vatican city, Bordo, and Prati (pages 120-139);
Tridente, Trivi, and Quirnale (pages 98-119);
Centro Storico (pages 70-97);
Ancient Rome (pages 50-69);
Monti, Esquillino, and San Lorenzo (pages 140-157);
Trastevere and Gianicolo (pages 158-180);
San Giovanni and Trestaccio (pages 171-180);
Southern Rome (pages 193-222).

As if this were not enough, the book contains additional chapters, such as: History (pages 226-238); The Arts (pages 239-249); and Survival Guide (pages 265-284). Survival Guide includes instructions on Italian words, e.g., MANZO means beef, TONNO means tuna, AIUTO means help, MI SONO PERSO means I am lost. Survival Guide also describes airports, and these are Leonardo da Vinci Airport and Ciampino Airport. Also, Survival guide describes a weird 20 percent tax that imposed on everything.

MAP. The rear cover has a multicolored fold-out map that is 14.5 by 21 inches. The map shows Tiber River, snaking from north to south through Rome. The map shows eleven bridges, including Ponte Margherita, Ponte Cavour, and Ponte G. Mazzini. The map shows that the Tiber River has a little island in it, called Isola Tiberina. To the lower right on the map is an oval shape, and this is the Colosseum. To the upper left is St. Peter's Square. At the center of the map, going from north to south, one notices a high concentration of locations with red-colored identifications (red writing), and these are famous temples, basilicas, piazzas, and museums.

THE TEXT. The guidebook was intended more as a source of information than as entertainment, in view of the obvious fact that the paper is made of dull white paper (and is not glossy) and in view of the fact that there are not many photographs. Thus, it might be best first to describe the text. Hotels have their own chapter (pages 214-222), and hotels are not identified separately in each of the chapters corresponding to districts. Regarding WELROME HOTEL, we read, "A small spotless hotel in a quiet backstreet not far from Termini, owners Mary and Carlo take great pride in looking after their guests and will . . . advise you on where to eat and where to avoid. Their seven . . . rooms are clean and comfortable. No breakfast but kettles and fridges are provided and there are plenty of nearby bars for cornetto and coffee." As one can see, this is similar to the little hotel blurbs that are found in guidebooks from other publishers, such as FODOR'S and FROMMER'S.

The writing style is informative, never too chatty, and on occasion downright clever. In a description of Rome's pizzerias, we read that, "Every Roman's favorite casual . . . meal is . . . pizza, with Rome's signature wafer-thin base, covered with . . . bubbling toppings, slapped down on tables by waiters on a mission" (page 31).

In a description of a gelateria called, FIOR DI LUNA, we read, "This busy little hub serves up handmade gelato and sorbet -- its made in small batches and uses . . . hazelnuts from Tonda and pistachios from Bronte . . . they make a few flavors from donkey's milk" (page 165).

PHOTOGRAPHS. The photos are workmanlike and they do the job. There are no wasted photographs, as one sometimes finds in tour guides, such as children sitting next to a flower bed. As I mentioned above, the book is not swamped with photographs. I have noticed that guide books from FODOR'S have a color photo or color map on every other page throughout the entire book. Anyway, the photos in this book include:

Sculpture by Bernini (page 7). The sculpture is a girl getting raped by a bearded man.

Gallery of Maps in Vatican Museum (page 9)
St. Peter's Basilica, which is Rome's biggest church (page 9)

Roman Forum, which takes the form of ancient ruins (page 12)
Statue of Constantine at Capitoline Museums (page 11)

Pizza pies on a table (page 28)
Interior of opera house showing four balconies (page 40)
A dozen statues inside Capitoline Museums (page 60)

Outside dining at Campo de Fori. This shows dining tables in a town square. In the middle of the town square is a statue resembling Obi Wan Kenobi (page 96)

The Spanish Steps, with people sitting on the steps. The narrative discloses the history of The Spanish Steps, and identifies statues (Barcaccia, a sinking boat) and buildings (Colonna dell Immacolata) that are nearby.

Roof of St. Peter's Basilica. The photo shows a row of statues on the roof. It shows five statues. But in all, this roof has 140 statues of various saints, sculpted in the years 1662-1703.

Vatican Museum, view of a concave part of the building, which is an entrance. This entrance is next to a huge courtyard called Cortile della Pigna (page 127). Also, in this courtyard is a sphere sculpture by Arnaldo Pomodoro. In the year 1970, when I was a freshman at U.C. Berkeley, I was delighted by an outdoor exhibition of a dozen of Arnaldo Pomodoro's sphere sculptures and disc sculptures.

Interior of Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere (page 156). The interior features murals that resemble cluttered Persian paintings. Page 160 contains a duplicate photo of the same interior scene of this Basilica.

This accounts for about two thirds of all of the photos in this guidebook.

CRITIQUE. The legends to all of the figures are very tiny. I needed a magnifying glass to read the figure legends. Also, the names of the bridges on the fold-out map are printed in ink that is very faint. Because of the faint writing, and because of the tiny printing of bridge names, I needed a magnifying glass to read these as well.

Excellent Guide to Visit Rome
By Mary Jo Sminkey
Nice, typical Lonely Planet guide. I'm considering a trip to Rome and this gave me a very good run-down of all the best places to visit and multiple ways to plan the trip. You have the Top 10 places to visit, new locations and stores, lots of information for first time visitors and all the basic stuff to know about visiting Rome like currency, what to wear, how to tip, how to get around, even some language snippets. I particularly liked the suggested itineraries with places to eat included. There are also rundowns of places to visit by interest, for kids, month-to-month, that are free and that locals enjoy. There's an extensive section on places to eat, and then the major part of the guide which runs through all the major areas of Rome with the various sites to see, and the eating, entertainment, shopping, etc. in the area. There are lots of detail maps and photos throughout and so many little tidbits of information like what locals like to do. Everything is nicely cross-referenced and marked with numbers for finding them on the associated maps. Maybe the only complaint I would have is that I'd like it to be easier to jump directly to the area you are looking for but they are all the same color one the page margins. In the back you have a whole section all about the history of Rome, the architecture, etc. While maybe not particularly necessary in a travel guide, considering the importance of the history of Rome, I think this really adds to the enjoyment of seeing these historical locations if you aren't already very familiar with them. You also have sections on transportation options, places and options for lodging, and an A-Z directory for everything else, like public services, how to avoid getting pickpocketed, internet access, medical services, banks and so forth. Next you have a nice little travel language guide, including common phrases for travelers and a food glossary. Finally you have a map section with an overall map showing the location of the individual maps and guide to all the icons used on the maps. You also have a nice large pullout map to carry when you don't want to carry the entire book with you. Overall I'm very impressed with the quality of this travel guide, For it's small size and weight compared to some other travel guides, it packs in an impressive amount of information. Obviously I can't judge the accuracy of that information until I actually travel to Rome myself but just based on the quality of this book I am confident it will do the job well.

Overwhelming, Busy and Cumbersome
By Erika Borsos
Rome is a complex rich and vibrant city with ancient Roman architecture and history and modern expressions of Italian culture, including plazas, outdoor cafes, restaurants, museums and world class shopping. It is a feast for the senses with something magnificent and magical competing for one's interest at every turn of the corner and within sight. As such, the color coded sections and use of color for headlines in each chapter and section become overwhelming and serve to distract rather than enhance one's use of this guide. For some countries and cities this method may be beneficial and a good way of organizing information. For Rome, the multiple colors are overwhelming and for me not helpful at all.

While this travel guide provides the usual excellent information for which Lonely Planet is known, the actual usefulness of the guide has been diminished. I need a guide that helps me find information quickly without much effort. It should reduce complexity rather than increase it. It should help me find the most interesting sights easily, especially for a city so rich in ancient history and architecture. I prefer chapters divided up by location and best sights to visit. I like meaningful headings in an easy to read format. Highlighting special not-to-be missed sights should be set aside in a box with a nice colorful border, where use of color is helpful. The same color coded sections are now used routinely in most Lonely Planet guides. While it maybe a useful technique for some countries and cities, for Rome it just does not work. A rollicking ride!
By Fredster
This is the second of, let's hope, a series of humorous books about the adventures of a young British diplomat, Robert Milligan, in 1860s Japan. The first book had our reluctant young hero battling samurai (as well as devious Frenchmen) involved in a rebellion against the Shogunate; this one has him by the side of the most powerful man in Japan as the Shogunate begins to enter its deaththroes. As he stumbles, often drunkenly, from one mishap to the next, the loveable Milly somehow manages to survive encounters with everyone from paid assassins and murderous bands of samurai to irate noblewomen who don't appreciate their windows being used as urinals. It's a fun and rollicking ride throughout, peppered with jaunty dialogue and excellent jokes. And by the end of it, you've somehow absorbed a whole lot of Japanese history you should have learned about years ago. Looking forward to the next episode!

and was so glad to see a second
By BorntoRead
I was a big fan of the first book, and was so glad to see a second. Hoping for a third!

Love the historical and cultural details, and how the author weaves Milligan's adventurous tale with so much humor. I have to say the cover art is what first caught my eye. I sure hope this series gets the recognition it deserves.

Fun fiction with a Japan theme

More fun from the world of the Shogun and the hapless diplomat Milligan. Collier's adventures are fast-paced and a lot of fun to read, as well as filling you in on historical aspects. An easy read and a lot of fun.

A New "Must Read" for all Students
By Ellen Moe
In "Mary Jane: A True American Tale", the author deftly braids three compelling story lines into one cohesive tale. The book starts with Native American mythology and leads us into the interactions and tribulations of the Sioux and Chippewa tribes in the Minnesota territory. The second main story line is expansive: the Civil War and its political implications for the new state of Minnesota. The final and most personal story line follows the family of Mary Jane Nilsson as they depart Sweden with the church community to settle in America, the land of plenty.

The book is a quick read for adults but has enough depth that I learned quite a few new concepts about all three story lines.

I feel this book should become a standard text for all schools - possibly the 4th or 5th grades or middle school. It would be an excellent addition to home schooling curriculum since there are numerous concepts introduced that parent-teachers could delve into in more detail.

Now, I should disclose that this is not a totally unbiased review. I had heard this tale prior to its publication from Mary Jane Steiner, who is the "Aunt Mary Jane" acknowledged in the book's dedication as the keeper of the family history. I was fascinated by her stories about her Grandmother Mary Jane. Anne Marie Fritz, the author and her niece, has taken this interesting tale and with extensive research woven the personal journey of her great-grandmother, Mary Jane Nilsson, into the the context of American history.

okay
By gleem
When purchasing this book I was not really expecting a type of textbook about the Civil War. I could see where this might be a benefit to students, but as an adult I was not expecting this type of history focus. Sure, it was appropriate to mention some facts regarding the MN situation and subsequent soldier involvement however I became bored with all of the other details since I have read many other accounts of the blood covered battlefields, multitudes of dead bodies, etc. etc. I felt that the actual story of the Swedish family was only a minor part of the whole and this was a disappointment. But perhaps the available family details were limited and it was not possible to do more embellishing. There were some typos that could have used a good editor. On a positive note I did really like the emphasis on the gentle kindess that was portrayed by the Chippewa Indian tribe.

PAGE-TURNER!
By Marguerite Powell
I couldn't put this book down - finished it in one sitting! I became completely immersed in the story of the family's emigration to America amidst the chaos of the Civil War. I was fascinated by the Chippewa's "adoption" of the children until their father's return from his conscripted service.
I think it would make a fabulous movie!

Bad Hand: Fletcher Christian: The Last Piece of the Puzzle, by Paula Astridge

After the Bounty Mutiny, Fletcher Christian died on Pitcairn Island, or was this a lie? For how could he be dead when he was seen in England years later?

Captain Bligh was cleared of all responsibility for the ship’s uprising and the Rum Rebellion in New South Wales which followed. Was the controversy of both the reason why Christian’s rescue was kept secret? Or did Bligh and Australia’s famous sheep pioneer and politician, John Macarthur, perpetuate the myth for personal gain?

This is the story of these three remarkable men, of their love and loathing of each other and the fascinating part they played in the unsolved mystery of Christian’s fate.

Its fact-based solution will intrigue and astound.

History brought to life
By Andrew O'Keeffe
I realised in reading this engrossing book how little I knew about this period of Australian history. Paula Astridge has brought the Mutiny on the Bounty and the Rum Rebellion to life! A very enjoyable read about Blight, Fletcher and Macarthur and other characters. Highly recommended.

Historical facts that makes great reading
By PPDK
I picked this up to read on my last flight because I had really enjoyed the author's last book "Waltzing Dixie". Like Dixie, I couldn't put it down. It's a great read. The author's approach and extensive research challenged my perceptions and views of both Bligh and Christian and certainly gave me food for thought about Macarthur. Australian history brought to life. Well worth the read. Highly recommend.

A gripping read
By Marian Davey
I agree with Andrew - all I knew about Mutiny on the Bounty was what I had seen on the movies! Bad Hand is a gripping novel full of character detail and adventure. Paula's research in all her books is phenominal, the descriptions so vivid you feel you are there. I can also recommend Waltzing Dixie - an unknown story about two men who left Australia to fight in the American Civil War.
