With Fire and Sword: An Historical Novel of Poland and Russia, by Henryk Sienkiewicz

At a time when the state of Poland was constantly undergoing political turmoil, Henryk Sienkiewicz wasn’t afraid to ruffle feathers. Having already achieved success in his career around the end of the 19th century, the Polish journalist negatively portrayed the Teutonic Order at a time in which his audience lived under German rule. At the same time, he meticulously included historical language in his works, a sort of celebration of authenticity and the past. He would earn a Nobel Prize in 1905 for "outstanding merits as an epic writer." Sienkiewicz mastered historical novels that vividly put readers in places as distinct as 17th century Poland and Ancient Rome. He is still well regarded today for novels like With Fire and Sword, The Deluge, Quo Vadis, and Fire in the Steppe.

Epic.
By Karl Janssen
With Fire and Sword is a sweeping, romantic, historical epic, originally published in 1884 by Nobel Prize-winner Henryk Sienkiewicz. Though little read by American audiences, this book deserves a place of honor alongside such classics as The Three Musketeers, War and Peace, Doctor Zhivago, and Les Miserables. The opening chapters required a little historical research just to figure out what was going on, but once I got my bearings it was a great ride.

The story begins in 1647, and takes place mostly in the Ukraine, which was part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, at that time the most powerful nation in Europe. The novel follows the events of the Hmelnitski Uprising (This review is based on Jeremiah Curtin's English translation, so I'm using his spellings of proper nouns). Bogdan Hmelnitski led a Cossack Revolt against the Commonwealth, with the aid of the Tartars (Muslims from the Crimea). Pan Yan Skshetuski is a lieutenant in the Commonwealth forces led by Prince Yeremi. Shortly before the uprising Yan meets the love of his life, Princess Helena. As the fighting breaks out they are separated and spend most of the novel trying to get back together. One major obstacle to their reunion is Bogun, a fierce and powerful Cossack leader who also loves Helena, and takes her captive. Pan Yan has three comrades-in-arms: Pan Michal Volodyovski, Pan Longin Podbipienta, and Pan Zagloba. These four soldiers display a friendship similar to the four comrades of The Three Musketeers, with Zagloba providing most of the comic relief.

If there's a weakness to this book it's the plotting. The great adventure classics by Hugo or Dumas are intricately crafted so that each chapter is crucial to pushing the story forward. With Fire and Sword feels like it has quite a bit of filler. There are several chapters of the heroes drinking and talking about how they should all go look for the princess, but very few chapters of the heroes actually looking for the princess. About six instances occur of characters coincidentally running into Bogun, when two probably would've sufficed. Despite these few low points, the book overall is very exciting, and filled with memorable characters and events.

This novel contains some of the most vivid and gruesome depictions of warfare ever written. If they gave a prize for most impalements in a novel, Sienkiewicz would surely have won it with this entry. Atrocities are committed by both sides, beheadings are commonplace, and the torture of prisoners is routine. At one point, as the Commonwealth forces are approaching a town of particularly rebellious peasants, Yeremi instructs his soldiers to "Kill them so that they know they are dying," a philosophy that permeates the book. I don't want to make it sound like it's all blood and guts; Sienkiewicz also shows us the political intrigue behind the military strategy. And let's not forget, this is, after all, a love story.

This is the first book in a trilogy of historical novels by Sienkiewicz. The second volume is The Deluge (aka Potop), and the third is Fire in the Steppe (aka Pan Wolodjowski). After reading the first book, I can't wait to tackle the other two.

A must read!
By Ivan Kinsman
For any lover of Polish history, this is the first book of Sienkiewicz's Trilogy series (the other two being The Deluge and Pan Wo'odyjowski or The Fire in the Steppe).

This historical novel traces the fortunes of the Poles and Lithuanians living on the eastern borders on The Commonwealth (Poland and Lithuania) as they meet the assault of the Cossacks from the Ukraine, who have combined with the Tartars (led by Tugai Bey) and later the Mongols (led by the Khan) in a national uprising against their Polish overlords. Their force is commanded by Hmelnitski, the leader of the Zaporojian army.

The leading figures amongst the Poles are Prince Yeremi Vishnyevetski, who lives with his entourage at Lubni. He is ably assisted by Jan Skrzetuski (based on Mikolaj Skrzetuski), Jan Onufry Zagloba, Michal Wolodyjowski (based on Jerzy Wolodyjowski) and the immensely strong but mild-mannered Lithuanian, Longinus Podbipi'ta. Together they have to defend the Commonwealth from this assault with only a small force of battle-hardened knights. They are forced to make a last stand at Zbaraj, lacking assistance from the King and General Militia owing to internal squabbles and prevarication in Greater Poland, but hold out nobly until relief finally reaches them.

Intertwined in the plot is the love affair of Jan Skrzetuski and Helena Kurcewiczówna. They fall in love at the beginning of the novel and, after many trials and tribulations - many the result of the actions undertaken by Skrzetuski's sworn Cossack enemy, Yuri Bogun - they are finally reunited.

Story 5 Stars!!! Translation 0 Stars!!! ... Be careful when buying any Henryk Sienkiewicz books translated into English. His writings are truly wonderful, however Polish language is extremely difficult to translate properly. Jeremiah Curtin in the late 1800's and early 1900's tried to translate them into English and he tried to do it word for word. One cannot translate Polish into English word for word. It just doesn't make sense. Copyright on any of the books translated by Mr. Curtin have expired, so anyone can publish them, unfortunately they don't do any justice to Henryk's writings. Again, the stories are absolutely fabulous, but I highly recommend to get the most current translations, by a quality translator. ... To the publisher: Please, please publish the current translations of H. Sienkiewicz writings. I am sure you would sell a lot more of them and make more money, even after the royalties are paid to the translators.
