From award-winning author, playwright and screenwriter, Len Lamensdorf, comes a thrilling new account of the life of Jesus (Joshua) of Nazareth, presented as an historical novel, based on original research and a profound understanding of the Gospels and centuries of relevant literature. Did Jesus believe he was the son of God? Of course, every Jewish male believed he was the son of God. Did Jesus consider himself divine? A very different question, and one The Murdered Messiah seeks to answer.Did Jesus think he was the Messiah? Perhaps. Must the Messiah be a king? A warrior? A priest? A prophet? All of the above? Who did Jesus believe himself to be and how did he conceive his earthly mission? Why would a man whose entry to Jerusalem at Passover was a triumph, be suddenly and mysteriously murdered by the Romans?
The Gospels tell us nothing from the time Jesus spoke to the rabbis in the Temple when he was 12 until he began his ministry 18 years later. Some speculate that he traveled to Egypt, to Mesopotamia, even to India. Nonsense; Joshua never left Israel except to travel briefly to Tyre and Sidon and lands due east of the Jordan. There is nothing in Christian scripture about his personal life. A young Jewish male of that era would almost certainly have been married. Was Jesus married? If so, what happened to his wife--to his children, if he had any?

Review
If you're looking for just one epic novel set inJesus' time and revolving around his life and death, choose The Murdered Messiah. Book 1, Miracle in Galilee reveals the brutalities of Roman overlords:How does a good man- even a messiah figure - emerge under the rampant cruelty of his times? This novel expands the traditional images of Jesus as miracle worker and pacifist, adding deep political and social analysis. Did Jesus believe he was the Messiah? Gospel passages, early Judean history, insights from Scripture all contribute to this exploration, which includes numerous maps, an historical timeline and fascinating images of Jesus' times.
In the Prologue we meet Yossi, an Israeli tour guide, and Wajeeh, the Arab gatekeeper of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem."The sights, smells, sounds, and politics of this old world town come alive in passages that are captivating, realistic, and sparkling with intrigue and mystery. They race to the church, confronting six patriarchs, furious about the theft of precious ancient scrolls. Past and present are deeply connected in Miracle in Galilee. Satisfying surprises challenge the reader.
Fragments of a life and time bound together, unwound and re-interpreted by a Biblical scholar. A woman named Judith claims to be the sister of Yeshua as she captures the intricacies of her world: "This spring morning, Miriam had risen before dark, dressed and hurried to the well, anxious to complete her chores and still have time for a stroll through the hills...." Judas, Joseph, Miriam, and other Biblical figures come alive. The plot has been crafted with an expert's attention to riveting action and realistic events. Time for Book 2!
'"The finest novel aboutJesus--ever!"

From the Author
My goal in researching and writing this series (a more than 20 year project) was to do my best to understand the incredible person known to us as Jesus of Nazareth. The sources were virtually infinite, beginning with the Gospels, and including centuries of relevant but contradictory literature. I asked myself (and these sources) many questions: Did Jesus believe he was the son of God? Of course, every Jewish male believed he was the son of God. Did Jesus consider himself divine. A very different question and one The Murdered Messiah seeks to answer. Did Jesus think he was the Messiah? Perhaps. Must the Messiah be a king? A warrior? A priest? A prophet? All of the above? Who did Jesus believe himself to be and how did he conceive his earthly mission? Why would a man whose entry into Jerusalem at Passover was a triumph be suddenly and mysteriously murdered by the Romans?
The Gospels tell us nothing about his life from the time he spoke to the rabbis at the Temple when he was 12 until he began his ministry 18 years later. Some speculate that he traveled to Egypt, Mesopotamia, even India. Nonsense. Jesus never left Israel until he traveled briefly to Tyre and Sidon and lands east of the Jordan. There is nothing in scripture about his personal life. A young Jewish male of that era would almost certainly have been married. Was Jesus (Joshua) married? If so ,what happened to his wife--his children, if he had any?
If he were the Messiah how could he be viciously murdered? Theologians have devised an explanation for the inexplicable: He died for our sins. Why is God so cruel that he demands this act of redemption? The Jewish people were the only true monotheists on the planet. Hundreds of thousands of Jews had congregated in Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover, the feast of liberation. But if they were not miserable sinners what was the reason for Joshua's terrible sacrifice? Had he traveled throughout Israel, preaching the law and the love of God, only to fall prey to the machinations of Pontius Pilate, one of the cruelest men in a very cruel empire?
The Murdered Messiah seeks to unravel these riddles and reveal the true nature of this remarkable man with reverence for his extraordinary sacrifice and his passionate love for God.

By Christina Steiner
Len Lamensdorf captures your attention from the start in Book one of a series of five. A guarded, secreted scroll is stolen from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem at present time.
Yossi, a Jew, gets inadvertently pulled into the skirmish that ensues. He has the opportunity to read the translated scrolls and discovers much about the Roman occupation of Palestine, the daily life of the Jewish people living in the First Century and pre-birth and birth of the Messiah.
Lamensdorf's writing is fast-paced and interesting. He makes it plausible to look at the Messiah story from a more humanly perspective. The Introduction and Opening Note to the book is somewhat long.
I look forward to read the next book in this series.
