A Powerless Prisoner: A Captive God. No one is sure when the New World deity Quetzalcoatl was first worshiped. The god-man can be portrayed as a feathered serpent - and also associated with a bright green bird of the same name - but he was worshiped in a variety of ways by various cultures. Some versions of the myth state that he was a man with light hair, beard, blue eyes, and light skin. After helping humankind, he was said to have returned to his home, promising to return. It is not surprising that he has been identified as a Viking by some historians (and as an extraterrestrial by more adventuresome scholars). The Aztec Emperor Moctezuma II is reputed to have initially believed that when Hernán Cortés appeared in 1519 Quetzalcoatl had returned. Here Orfeo has been kidnapped by a New World tribe. They plan keep him as a prisoner while presenting him to a subjugated populace as a god. He has no desire to live his life in a gilded cage. His wife, Clarice, his aging mentor, Zurga, and the jack of all trades, Daryush, must cross the ocean to save their friend. They soon find they are involved in a civil war between the Nastases and Ixtlans. It will take all their cunning to rescue Orfeo and get back alive. Back at home a war is brewing between Sparta and Pylos. This time Zurga is not there to keep the peace.

Review
Mystery looms right off the bat in this excellent fourthnovel in the Orfeo Saga, as Orfeo is kidnapped and stowed aboard a full-sailed,deep-hulled ship of indeterminate origin.
His wife, the beautiful and strong-willed Clarice, is baffledby the abduction, as is his good friend Daryush, who sets sail in search ofOrfeo. He is accompanied by Semira, his wife.
"They stood for us at our wedding," she insists, with thefull force of her determination. "If it were not for them, we would not behere."
Strong indeed are the bonds between Orfeo and his friends, including his old mentor Zurga, who prowls the harbor of the ancient Egyptiancity of Tanis, looking for the elusive vessel.
While in Egypt, Zurga -- also called by some "The LastWanderer" -- heals the mother of King Thutmosis and samples one of thegoods traded by those aboard the mystery ship: a white, powdery substance that, when smoked, brings on feelings of euphoria. Today we know it as cocaine.
Interesting as that is, however, Zurga finds out very littlefrom the king about the ship and its exotic crew. So, he travels on, carryingwith him the hope that he will not have to cross the fearsome "GreatSea" to find Orfeo.
Fast forward several chapters. Asok, high priest of theQuetzalcoatl cult in Ixtlan, cannot believe his good luck. A golden-haired godlong-foretold has arrived just in time to help him bilk the superstitiouspopulace into parting with their hard-earned gold, just for a peek at Orfeo, who remains bemused by his predicament, mistaken as the storied man-deity.
Then, just as the Ixtlans --- the native people holding Orfeo-- and the rival nation Nastases are preparing for war, Clarice and all herfriends swoop in to rescue him. But wait! Whose ship is burning in the harbor?Alas, it is the getaway boat, and Orfeo and his mates must now make ready tofight for their lives.
This splendid sequel to Zurga's Fire spares no swashbucklingas Orfeo and his intrepid trio of B.C. buds are drawn into a fierce fight forfreedom. The first half of the book ends on a bittersweet note, however, and weare thrust quickly into the second half, which could easily stand on its own.
Suffice to say, Orfeo, Clarice, Daryush, and Semira becomehard-pressed in their respective homelands, defending themselves from armedaggressors and deranged demigods, such as deadly, yet strangely comicalHellion, who challenges Daryush to a fatal test of skill and strength. And,there's the Spartan King Iraju, who tries to defy Daryush in an impenetrablestone tower. Are they successful?
You'll need to purchase this five-star historical thriller tofind out. Congratulations are in order to author Murray Lee Eiland, Jr., forhis meticulous research and superb storytelling skills.

the historical setting is excellent for a story (although it is not really history)
By Amazon Customer
The Wanderer’s Last Journey is really two books in one. The first part involves the kidnapping of Orfeo. Clarice, Daryush, and of course Zurga set out to find him. Orfeo is kept in a “gilded cage” by a totally unscrupulous group of people from the New World. They control public access to “Quetzalcoatl” and are busy building up his mythology to maintain their control over their people (who are not surprisingly involved in a war with the neighboring group). While there is no actual evidence that contact between Old and New worlds took place so early, the historical setting is excellent for a story (although it is not really history). As the title suggests, Zurga does not return home. This is quite a sad moment. While in some ways he is the most interesting character, his methods (although not his knowledge accumulated over 9 decades) will continue to play a role in the saga. The heroes need all their skill and cunning in the second part of this book, which deals with the war between Pylos and Sparta. While Sparta is well known from the Classical period of Greek history, in the Bronze Age presented by the author they are rather overconfident. Even without Zurga, the big three who remain are more than a match for those who seek to conquer them. While books 1-3 very much form one story arc, book 4 starts what seems to be a new phase of the saga. While Daryush does not yet have the gravitas of Zurga, he may well mature into someone who is far more versatile than his teacher!

The author delivers the great storytelling that he has us accustomed
By Vanessa Kings
"The Wanderer's Last Journey" is book 4 in The Orfeo Saga, and by what the title suggest, perhaps the last. Therefore, I was eager to see where the adventures would lead to this time, and I was not disappointed.
We have followed Orfeo since he was a young sheep-herder in book 1, set around 1600 BC, through epic adventures where he has grown into a true hero of his time, participating not only in the conflicts of Greece, but also in those of other civilizations.
True to the epic adventure style of the previous books, in this novel, Orfeo has been kidnapped by a tribe from the New World, with the objective of presenting him as the god Quetzalcoatl to their people. So now, Clarice, his wife, Zurga, his mentor, and Daryush, the jack of all trades, must travel to the new continent to save Orfeo, only to land in the middle a civil war between the Nastases and Ixtlans. Meanwhile, a war between Sparta and Pylos is on the horizon in their homeland.
Author Murray Lee Eiland Jr. delivers the great storytelling that he has us accustomed to in this new installment of his historical fiction series. A worthy closing (if this is indeed the final chapter) to the series.

Hope for Peace
By HGK
Orfeo gets kidnapped and put up as the incarnated God, Quetzalcoatl, in the land beyond the Great Ocean, by the corn-eating, cocaine-trading people. Clarice, Daryush, Semira, as well as Zurga joined forces to rescue Orfeo successfully, although at a critical moment the old mentor-friend Zurga sacrificed himself before the great trans-Atlantic escape homeward.
As they returned home, Daryush and his charming and devoted wife, Semira, found a home-spun tyrant, with whom they dealt with quite successfully. Similarly, Orfeo and his wife Clarice got enmeshed in a new international conflict with the Spartans, who were countered skillfully by the attacking force of Orfeo with the help of old Telemon as well as by the defensive force lead expertly by the ad-hoc general, beautiful and determined lady Clarice. Peace is temporary, but War is always, everywhere!
I was particularly attracted to the brief but serious "theological" conversation of Daryush with Avram and Lev in the beginning of Book IV, Chapter 3.
