The Paying Guest
By Robin Friedman
The still underappreciated novelist George Gissing (1857 - 1903) is best known for his books cast in the three-volume Victorian mold, such as "New Grub Street". Gissing's books explore themes of class structure, commercialism, love, and failure. In 1895, Gissing temporarily abandoned the three-volume convention and published three short, highly readable novels: "Eve's Ransom", "Sleeping Fires" and the book under review, "The Paying Guest", each of which offers a distinctive approach to Gissing's characteristic themes. Of the three books, "Eve's Ransom" is one of Gissing's best works. The other two are good but less significant. I have been enjoying revisiting Gissing by rereading these three short works of 1895 and by reviewing them here on Amazon with the hope of interesting other readers in exploring Gissing.

"The Paying Guest" is unusual among Gissing's output in its lightness of touch and in its comedy. The book tells of the encounter of a rising middle-class suburban British family with a young girl, caught between two suitors, of a distinctly different background. Clarence Mumford, age 35, and his wife Emmeline, just under 30, live in rural Sutton in a home they call "Runnymede", about 15 miles from London with their two-year old son and their three domestics. In order to secure supplemental income, they advertise for a boarder, a "paying guest". The guest they receive will soon disrupt their peaceful routines.

Louise Derrick is a young woman of 22 with no education. no skills, a temper, and a taste for frivolity. She is looking for a place to live due to difficulty with her mother, with her stepfather, Higgins, and with her stepsister, Cecily Higgins, age 26. A young man named Bowling is courting Cecily Higgins, but he appears to prefer Louise. Higgins wants Louise to leave home and agrees to pay her expenses to avoid discord between Louise and Cecily and to allow Bowling's courtship of Cecily to proceed forward without a rival for his attentions. Besides Bowling's interest, Louise is also being courted by a man named Cobb, a working-class person with a good income and prospects. Cobb has a rough, possibly violent, disposition and his courtship of Louise is a stormy, on-again, off-again affair. Louise does not seem to know her own mind but wants to marry. With some trepidation, the Mumfords accept Louise as a boarder.

Louise's temper, what the Mumfords perceive as her vulgarity, and her attempts to draw the Mumfords into her relationship with her family and with Cobb lead to discord between the couple. They repent of their paying guest and try to find a tactful way to get her to leave. As the story develops, Louise has a private meeting with Mumford at Mumford's railway commuting station which provokes jealousy in Mrs. Mumford. Louise, thinking that Bowling's relationship with Cecily is at an end, encourages his matrimonial advances. Cobb pays an unannounced visit to Runnymede to pursue Louise and, as a result of a foolish accident, sets the drawing room of the home on fire, resulting in an injury which leaves Louise bed-ridden for several weeks. Mrs. Mumford, in her refinement, and Mrs Higgins, in her vulgarity, exchange pleasantries which ends forever Louise's stay in the house. Ultimately, Cobb winds up with Louise, with an uncertain future in store, and the Mumfords try to piece together their domestic life.

The humor of the book results from the interaction between the Mumfords, with their snobbery and attempted refinement, and their well-meaning but foolish boarder Louise, and with her mother, stepfather and Cobb. In its portrayal of the effects of class and money on human relations, this book offers a short, upbeat introduction to Gissing's themes. Gissing's portrayal of women is among the strongest features of his work, and his novels frequently, as in "The Odd Women" address issues involving feminism. By portraying Louise in her shallowness in "The Paying Guest" Gissing stresses the need for expanding educational expectations for women if men and women are to have full intimate and rewarding lives together. The book can be read in a single sitting. While far from the best of Gissing, this book is enjoyable. With its two companion novels of 1895, especially the outstanding "Eve's Ransom", the book offers a good short introduction to Gissing for the newcomer. Readers who love the Gissing of "New Grub Street", "The Odd Women", or "Born in Exile" will gain a broader understanding of the author from these too-little known books in a shorter, more modern format.

"Dark Snow" is well worth the time - A GOOD read!
By John Williams
I really liked Mike Lawrence's adventurous romp through an important time in America's history and particularly appreciated the details of life in Southeast Kansas.. The struggle for justice weaves its way through more than Remmy's search for his family's killer. The accurate historical snippets anchored the narrative as more than story. I am looking forward to the sequel and hope it is available soon.

This story has something for the adventurer and the historian. The reader moves easily through the agrarian/industrial transition of our history with a character we admire.

Interesting but too long.
By Virginia Bohndorf
I like historical novels. "Dark Snow" offered a lot of historical info which I enjoyed. However, the story line was stretched too much. It should have been 100 pages shorter.

If I never see Kristoff Wellesley alive again, it will be too soon!

He insinuated himself into our family before anyone noticed. He aided my brother, Whitcomb, to enter the British Navy. Then he charmed my mama and my sisters with his noble manners and dubious aplomb.

But I know the truth. He is charlatan and a lying, scheming rake! He thinks he has pulled the wool over my eyes. Yet I am the sheep bearing a gift. Now that he is a Duke, he believes he is untouchable. But I have discovered he used my family to gain title and advantage, destroying my mother's happiness and preventing my brother from returning home.

I won't let him get away with it. I will repay him the pain and suffering he caused me and my family - but not before I grant him the greatest pleasure he has ever known. We are married, and I have waited an eternity for tonight.

I have heard revenge is a dish best served cold. And I plan to give the Duke his recompense that will chill even the darkest corners of Newgate. I will not rest until I destroy the Duke, and I have saved his best surprise for last!

If you're going to write a book, you have to go beyond having a decent plot.
By Ramona Combs
If I could give less than one star for this book, I would. It is the worst written book I've ever read. It was all over the place, first she's here, then over here, then in the middle of something over there, then back to point one, then a random piece of information that you know is going to come up later.

This should have been a first draft, of what could have been a very interesting book. I've read fanfictions more thought through and developed than this book.

If it had been me who had written this, I would have been ashamed to accept any money for it.

Very good, short stories
By 6CycleMind
I found it interesting, and I feel as it would grasp onto its target audience and throw them into the well written words on each page as if they were the ones experiencing each moment. A book is supposed to in many ways be an escape. This is just not my definition of the ideal escape I want to be in. However, I would confidently gift this to someone who is into these types of books. Very good, short stories. I don't always like short stories but theses, are great. If you don't have a lot of time or just want to read something quick, this is perfect.

The Worst Thing I've Ever Read !
By MamaB
I don't believe I've read anything with less attention to editing. On top of that , the book was so disjointed as to be almost incomprehensible. It's as if she took all sorts of words and phrases from a dictionary of historical romance novels, threw them in a bag and pulled them out one at a time and put them on the page. The storyline might have actually been interesting if it had been fully written. It wasn't even enough to call a first draft. It was more like an outline for a book. Let me just say I'm very glad I didn't pay for it, because it wasn't worth reading for free.

Markus is an English lord and Templar fearing God and hiding from his past. The Hospitaller, Sir Charle, and the woman of Markus’s heart, Lady Mairín, desire to end his ruinous descent into despair. A letter from a slain brother-knight is perceived as the calling for Markus to return to the Land of Christ, and his failures. There he expects to discover whether God will set his conscience free from the weight of his burdens and restore him, or if he must offer his life to attain his absolution… Stitched Crosses: Crusade is a tale of faith in doubt and turmoil. Set in the waning days of the 12th century, Christendom has embarked to rescue Outremer from Saladin’s Muslim armies. These historical events, combined with exciting medieval action, popular romantic legend, and the sense of the Divine, serve as the canvas to this tale of a knight wrestling with his spirit.

A Great New Work of Christian Historical Fiction!
By Daniel R. Huth
Recently, I have had the pleasure to read Stitched Crosses: Crusade by Joshua Rothe. Having always been a fan of historical fiction, once I first spotted it on Ad Crucem’s website (adcrucem.com), I was compelled to investigate further. I ended up purchasing a copy for myself, with the intention of previewing the book before potentially adding it to our congregation’s bookstore. From start to finish, I was thoroughly impressed with the storyline and attention to detail. It is apparent that the author has a passion for this time in history, a distinct talent for storytelling and character development, all backed by a firm foundation in God’s Word.
The book takes us on the action-packed spiritual journey of Markus, an English lord and member of the Order of the Temple. He has built walls around himself to escape from his disgraced past. He even shuts out his love, Lady Mairin. It is not until a fellow knight from the Order of Saint John the Baptist, Sir Charle, delivers a posthumous message from a dear friend of Markus, that he is forced to confront his past and attempt to atone for his transgressions. Markus must travel to the Holy Land to discover what his brother-knight had wanted him to find. All along the way, he is tested both physically and spiritually by the conquerors of Jerusalem, the Muslim armies. Will Markus find what he is looking for? I will leave that for you to find out.
The author does a masterful job of transporting us to 12th Century Christendom to join our protagonist Markus in his journey for his life’s purpose. For me, as a Lutheran Christian, certain themes elevated themselves out of this gripping story. First, there is confession and absolution. At multiple points in Markus’ journey, he becomes so engrossed in his past shortcomings that he cannot proceed forward. It is Sir Charle who is there to pronounce absolution to him. Second, we see the shortcomings of superstitions and mysticism. Markus at times seems to be guided more by perceived signs than by God’s clearly spoken Word. As we will find, this particular problem will get our hero in quite a bit of trouble. This struggle for purpose and vocation is what sends Markus on his trek. However, all along, it is the Word and Sacrament that sustains him, not any fleeting “sign”.
As a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod and a Director of Christian Education in our parish, I firmly believe we should continue lifting up the talented individuals such as Joshua Rothe (Josh Radke) in our midst. Stitched Crosses: Crusade is a great addition to anyone’s library. If you want a more gripping, satisfying read than most of the Christian Fiction (I hesitate to even categorize this as such) distributed from the Big Publishers, I highly recommend you acquire a copy for yourself!

A fantastic read that left me ready for more!
By Tyrel Bramwell
Joshua Rothe demonstrates a clear command over the history and legend in which he plants the seed of his story. As the book progresses the tale blossoms into a rich narrative bearing delightful, and masterfully contextual, fruit. The author's fiction is stitched flawlessly into the fabric of church history with the thread of Arthurian myth. The read propelled me back in time, expanding my imagination while enriching my Christian beliefs through it's powerful delivery of the Gospel.

The way that the author highlights errors in church doctrine and practice exposes and educates, never leaving the reader alone to navigate those waters without guidance. His characters clearly contrast false teachings and the blindness of sin tainted perspectives with the truth. The intensity of this art peaks at the end of the narrative in a climax that drives home the cruciform message of the entire book.

It was a fantastic read that left me ready for more!

this book was easy to enjoy
By Mary Moerbe
This book first strikes you with its language. It is stately, formal. It is purposefully crafted to draw you back to the time of English knights and lords. Yet, make no mistake, each word is chosen with precision to embody the setting and further to tell a tale where words are ultimately life or death.

Markus is an English lord and a Templar in hiding. His adventure in this book takes remarkable turns, and I really admire the adept way the author drew together fact and fiction.

I will admit I had to look up Outremer in a dictionary. It refers to Christian territories held in the Holy Land during the crusades. But other than a few pauses while reading, trying to remember history learned years ago, this book was easy to enjoy. I haven’t read much historical fiction, particularly set in this time frame, but that just means that I can honestly encourage you, no matter what you typically read, to give this book a chance. The higher language gave my brain a jump start and I got used to it by the second or third chapter. Fantastical elements are present just enough to lend pop, and the exploration of Christian doubt and guilt is well worth the read.

Love and honor are certainly involved, but this book addresses issues including the role of God’s Word and what is faith in a probing but non-preachy way. As a Lutheran, I particularly appreciated some of the underlying elements and a few of the plot twists—but I won’t spoil it by giving them away!

This would make for lovely fall reading with a warm beverage at hand!

The Last Free Men: an eagle fallen, by Jack Everett, David Coles

A sweeping historic tale of a half-Roman, half-Briton scout known as Marcus to his Roman friends and colleagues, and Uffin to his mother and family. Speaking both Latin and Brittonic, Marcus travels freely north of Hadrian's Wall, trading with tribes-folk but reporting to his Roman masters. During one such trip, he is mistakenly accused of murdering his commanding officer and sentenced to serve his life out in the lead mines. Escaping with a female slave and aided by a highly respected Druid, Marcus crosses the Wall and hides among the many tribes beyond the yoke of Rome. Back at Housesteads, the large Roman fort on Hadrian's Wall, troops are gathering for an incursion north. The magnificent 9th Legion is proposing to teach these unruly tribes a lesson in submission. The Druids present Marcus Uffin as their figurehead to lead the tribes while the might of Rome marches to subjugate this ragtag collection of primitives. Or, perhaps, there is a different lesson to be learned. A discussion guide is included in this book.

About the Author
DAVID COLES David began writing fantasy and science fiction at fourteen. It took another ten years to be successful. He also designs and builds websites for friends. He has co-written for many years with Jack Everett, and together, as David Coles & Jack Everett and as Everett Coles, they have explored the local stars, killed off countless Roman legionaries, found out what happened to King Arthur and the Round Table, got the lowdown on how medieval lives were lived and hatched a few thriller plots as well as creating a new detective on the block - DI Stewart White. He has attended workshops run by both of the UK writers, Terry Pratchett and David Gemmell (now, sadly, both lates); a process requiring late nights and copious alcohol. He was a founder member of the international Historical Novel Society where alcohol is optional. He would like to be taller and possess more hair, he would like to be fitter and leaner, he would like to be richer but such things were not meant to be and by and large, he is content with the way things have worked out. David lives with his wife and a pet laptop in God's own county - Yorkshire in the UK. JACK EVERETT Jack Everett is author and co-author of a number of fantasy & science fiction, crime and thriller novels. Some are published, some are in progress and others remain between the ears. Jack also hand-crafts the most stunning snooker cues imaginable as well as modern objets d'art from exotic and magnificently figured timbers. He collects books and playing cards though there is little space left in a much overcrowded den. ... he dreams of having a bigger library. One day he may have the extra room he dreams of!

An Extremely Enjoyable Read
By J. Chippindale
A good book is always a joy but when it covers one of your favourite subjects, in this case Roman Britain and the Roman legions then the reading experience is doubly memorable. This book covers a period in the history of the famous Ninth Legion based in the Roman town of Eboracum (modern day York). The Legio IX Hispana to give them their correct name had a chequered history, vanishing from the pages of history around the time this book takes place. Much is documented about the famous victories and campaigns certain legions fought but Roman historians were less than forthcoming with their historical scrolls and texts when a legion had been disgraced. Unless valid documentation is unearthed we will probably never know the fate Legio IX. However, as a work of fiction this book puts forward its own solution as to what happened to the ninth legion and it certainly makes for an exciting and enjoyable read.

The book follows the lives of two men each driven towards a destiny by circumstances beyond their control. On the one hand a young man, Marcus Uffin Gettorix, born of mixed parentage, his mother a high-born lady of the north of Britain and his father, a Roman senator, who returned to Rome many years ago. There is nothing unusual about a mixed marriage between Roman and Britain. Rome has occupied Britain with varying degrees of success for almost a hundred years. However, whereas the tribes of the south have succumbed to the might of Rome and have even benefited from Rome's occupation, the north of the country is a different breed of animal entirely and subversive elements, namely the druids see Marcus with his Roman upbringing and his previous employment by the Roman army as the ideal tool to do their dirty work for them.

The other lead character in the book is a career soldier, centurion, Emelius Karrus. A man whose career as a professional soldier has always been in the ascendancy thanks in no small part to his ability as a professional soldier and secondly by Rome's insatiable thirst for increasing the boundaries of the Roman Empire. Karrus has also taken a British woman for a wife but his first and probably only love is his beloved legion.

For anyone with a love of Ancient Britain and in particular the Roman occupation, this book is well worth a read. The author's have woven a magical tale around these two men. Men who two thousand years ago experienced all the emotions that we all feel today: Love, hate, ambition, loyalty, fear, the full gambit. Their story is the backbone of this book.

Finally, whenever I visit the areas mentioned in the book and Eboracum is very close to my own home. I get a tingle down my spine. Whether this is just an affinity with the surroundings, or something more potent, I'm not sure, but I think the author may welll have had similar feelings when researching this book.

Legionaires and British Defenders
By Larry Winebrenner
One of the shortcomings of US citizens is that most of them have imperfect knowledge of their own history and geography, let alone that of the rest of the world. Even those with a smattering of knowledge about Roman incursions into Great Britain in the days of the Roman Empire don't distinguish between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. This novel lifts up a story of the attempts of the Romans to subdue one of these independent groups.

While a fascinating adventure, the listing of unfamiliar names may make it difficult for one to immediately engage this offering. Perhaps by starting on chapter three or four one could get into the story, then go back to the first chapter to see who the story is
about, but this is not suggested. Just be warned of the difficulty of mastering so many unfamiliar names---both of people and of places.

The story illustrates life in times of early history in a very picturesque way---manners, household objects, infidelities. It also pictures the power and processes of the victorious Romans. Even movement of individuals is carefully controlled. The Romans know that if freedom of movement of individuals is permitted, they might and together to resist Roman domination of their land. Indeed they might, for individuals do form, away from the Roman front, defined by Hadrian's wall dozens of miles long and built for the very purpose of holding rebels at bay.

While illustrating the period of British history, the story eventually centers on the Roman Ninth, one section of the LegIonaires who are deployed to end the rebellion of "those barbarians" once and for all. Historically it is not certain what happened to the Ninth, but in this story there is a very dramatic scene of what happened to the invader. The story is worth reading for more than customs and objects of early centuries near the English-Scottish border, but for that final scene as well.

This was a well-researched novel well worth reading,.

My Opinion
By Allen Branch
I won't repeat what has already been said in the other reviews regarding what this book is about. I will say that it is a well-written book with a story line that sucked me in and kept me turning the pages. The characterization was very well developed, especially those of the protagonist, Marcus Gettorix, and the Roman Centurion, Aemilius Karrus, such that I had to keep reading to see how it was going to turn out. This story placed me there, in Britain, in the 2nd century. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction and especially to those who are interested in either early England or Roman army expansion.

The Deluge: An Historical Novel of Poland, Sweden, and Russia. Vol. 2 (of 2), by Henryk Sienkiewicz

At a time when the state of Poland was constantly undergoing political turmoil, Henryk Sienkiewicz wasn’t afraid to ruffle feathers. Having already achieved success in his career around the end of the 19th century, the Polish journalist negatively portrayed the Teutonic Order at a time in which his audience lived under German rule. At the same time, he meticulously included historical language in his works, a sort of celebration of authenticity and the past. He would earn a Nobel Prize in 1905 for "outstanding merits as an epic writer." Sienkiewicz mastered historical novels that vividly put readers in places as distinct as 17th century Poland and Ancient Rome. He is still well regarded today for novels like With Fire and Sword, The Deluge, Quo Vadis, and Fire in the Steppe.

From Publishers Weekly
Surrounding himself with murderous libertines and wastrels, wild young Polish soldier Andrei Kmita is misled into treason. But his pure love for spirited Olenka (Aleksandra Billevich) eventually sets him on track and inspires his single-minded mission, the defense of his motherland. It's the middle of the 17th century, and the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth is crushed in a vise of rebellion and bloody onslaughts by Swedes and Russians. Around the constants of love and war, Polish novelist Sienkiewicz (1846-1916) weaves a fugue of betrayal, redemption, faith and passion. An underlying theme questions whether people can rise above their time and circumstances. In his massive novel, with its eerie foreshadowing of modern Poland's overthrow of the Soviet yoke, Sienkiewicz ( Quo Vadis? ) gives a resounding answer. His rounded characters represent all sectors of society in this, the second volume of a trilogy begun in With Fire and Sword. The convincing translation by Polish-born American novelist Kuniczak adds luster to a robust populist epic.

From Library Journal
A mere five years have passed since the knights of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth threw back the Cossack invasion from the East, yet a new and far more dangerous threat appears: Swedish troops are pouring across the northern border. Thus begins Sienkiewicz's sprawling epic sequel to With Fire and Sword ( LJ 3/15/91). As in the first novel, the text brings to life an entire 17th-century culture, unfolding like a richly adorned tapestry. Central to the story is Andrei Kmita, a young Lithuanian noble whose ruthlessness obscures his military sagacity and bravery, branding him an outlaw. But for the love of the beautiful Olenka, he undertakes to reshape his character in the forge of battle, and in so doing helps save king, country, and church from the heretic invaders. Beside him fight Volodyovski, Zagloba, and Skshetuski, the principal knights from With Fire and Sword . In many ways, the new saga in which they appear falls short of the high standard set by that magnificent predecessor. The characters are more stiffly predictable, the pace protracted, and the ending too abrupt. Nonetheless, its significance eclipses its flaws, making it essential in any collection.

Lost in the Translation
By Douglas Merrill
By all means, buy this edition if it is your only way to enter the marvelous world that Sienkiewicz has given to Poland and to posterity. Discover why the Trilogy has been a best-seller in its native land for more than a century. Epic adventure, star-crossed love, villains, heroes, treachery, heartbreak and humor. Sienkiewicz wrote to lift up the hearts of his people, and if he doesn't lift yours, see a cardiologist immediately.
But beg or borrow if you can, and steal if you must, the translation by W.S. Kuniczak that was published in the early 1990s. Discover what happens when a novelist translates. Kuniczak is true not just to the sentences, but to the spirit of the work. He blows the dust out of the century-old writing and lets it shine. And for readers not on intimate terms with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 17th Century (admit it), he effortlessly drops in helpful hints.
Here's how Curtin starts:
There was in Jmud a powerful family, the Billeviches, descended from Mendog, connected with many, and respected, beyond all, in the district of Rossyeni. ... Their native nest, existing to this day, was called Billeviche; ... In later times they branched out into a number of houses, the members of which lost sight of one another. They all assembled only when there was a census at Rossyeni of the general militia of Jmud on the plain of the invited Estates.
And Kuniczak:
In the part of the old Grand Duchy of Lithuania that was known as Zmudya, and which antedated the times of recorded history, there lived an ancient family named Billevitch, widely connected with many other houses of Lithuanian gentry, and respected more than any other in the Rosyen region. ... Their family seat, known as Billevitche ... so that in time they split into several branches that seldom saw each other. Some of them got together now and then when the Zmudyan gentry gathered for the annual military census near Rosyen on a plain called Stany...
Honestly, which version would you rather spend 1700 pages with? The native nest or the family seat?
(And just by the by, when will a smart publisher sell the Sienkiewicz Trilogy alongside Tolkien? Why do they squirrel it away with the Serious Literature in Translation that mostly gathers dust? There's millions and millions of dollars in these books, lying around, waiting for someone to market them properly.)

Eyes have not seen...
By Roberto T Helguera
Nor ears heard what Sienkewicz has prepared for those who love his works! Number two in the trilogy on the history of Poland, this is the best I have read in a long, long time. It stands alone as a story, but many of its characters have been proven in war in other stories of Sienkiewicz. If for that alone, it is worth reading this book after "With Fire and Sword". It tells the love story of a man and a woman tragically separated by foolishness, pride, confusion and the Swedish invation of Poland in the 1500s which divided a nation against itself and drew the best and worst out of its citizens. Above all, this is a romantic novel, but with enough battles, action and virtues to outdo the Illiad. You will cry and laugh as you read it; you will hope against hope; you will feel in the middle of the battle; you will want to unsheath your sword and run after the neighbours... In sum, another Sienkiewicz masterpiece. Written from a Catholic perspective, this book summarizes well the soul of the Polish nation and its love for the Church.

Breathtaking!
By The Pete
This book, the second in the famous Sienkiewicz Trilogy, is not a two-volume set for show. The book is 1700+ pages long! As usual with Sienkiewicz, however, the pages are required to tell the story. This novel brings back the main characters from "With Fire And Sword" though they play a somewhat smaller role, especially Pan Yan and Helen. Two new main characters take center stage.
Andrei is a wild knight whose thoughtless, self-absorption mirrors the attitudes of the ruling class in Poland at the time. His attitude leads him down a terrible road and then forces him to make the hard, arduous climb back from nothing once he realizes his error. The skill with which Sienkiewicz intertwines Andrei's descent and redemption with the greater struggle of Poland against Sweden is brilliant! On the other hand, there's Olenka who is loved by Andrei. She seems to represent Poland itself and the ethics which are required to preserve something worth fighting for. She is the moral center of the novel even when she's not in the foreground of the action.
Their love story plays out in the midst of a tale of war that involves the invasion of Poland from three countries at the same time (the 'deluge' of the title). We meet the Kings of two countries, the nobles under them with their own agendas, and the soldiers fighting on as power shifts from one side to the other in an international game where the winners get crowns and the losers lose everything.
Just a sample of a few threads in the story: the siege of a holy shrine, a knight leading a small band of raiders against an army, a woman taken captive by a warlord and makes him regret iit, a country defeated not by the army of its enemies but by something more deadly from within, the plots of a noble family to rip apart an entire nation solely to rule a part of it themselves, the attempt to return an exiled King to his country through wild mountains full of enemy soldiers. This is just a sample! The scope of this novel is absolutely unsurpassed and, best of all, Sienkiewicz has the imagination, characters and events to keep it interesting for over 1,700 pages! You really do feel as though you've lived the two years that are encompassed by this novel. So much happens.
In less capable hands, "The Deluge" could have been just a boring history lesson. Sienkiewicz weaves all the history and political figures of the time with his own characters to crystallize a crucial point in a nation's history. In addition, he crafts a story that is unbelievably complex and yet thouroughly entertaining from first page to last.
And hats off to the translator! How many people would have the talent and stamina to translate something this long and do such a consistent and beautiful job? Not many, I imagine.

Next Year in Jerusalem, by John Kolchak

A brutal re-imagining of the Gospel story, Next Year in Jerusalem follows the footsteps of Yeshua Bar-Yosif—an illiterate, epileptic, bastard son of a Roman soldier on his ill-fated life journey through a land racked by terror.

As first century Judea bleeds from the oppression of Roman rule and the violent uprisings against it, Yeshua, tormented by familial guilt for abandoning his mother, eventually forms his own family of travelers who preach for peace and compassion in the face of internecine savagery. Their wanderings lead to encounters with false prophets, assassins, and a rapidly growing movement of extremist rebels whose leader Bar-Abbas’ mission is to expel the Romans and establish an ethnocentric theocracy.

Chance sends both Yeshua and Bar-Abbas to the court of Pontius Pilate—the dipsomaniac Governor obsessed with leaving a name for himself in the scrolls of history—and the outcome of that meeting seals the fate of the world for the next two millennia.

With urgent parallels to contemporary issues of religious war, this book is both a lament and a warning. It is also a story about the passage of time, the nature of memory, and of mankind’s inherent yearning for life everlasting.

Against this background of violence emerge three figures whose fates collide to change history forever: Pontius Pilate, the dipsomaniac governor of the territory engulfed in endless uprisings; Yeshua Bar-Yosif, an illiterate, epileptic, carpenter’s son and reluctant leader of a new religious movement; and Yeshua Bar-Abbas, the ruthless leader of the “Sicarii” – violent insurgents intent on ridding Judea of the occupying Roman army through terror and self-sacrifice.

With prescient historical parallels to the endless wars and conflicts that continue to plague the same part of the world today, this story is both a lament and a warning.

It is also a book about the passage of time, the nature of memory, and of mankind’s inherent yearning for life everlasting.

Review
If a new subgenre could be coined for John Kolchak's book, Next Year in Jerusalem, "grim gospel" would be more than satisfactory. Set somewhere in the arid wastelands between Nikos Kazantzakis' The Last Temptation of Christand Gore Vidal's Julian, Kolchak weaves a Hobbesian Palestine where the life of a man is solitary, poor, nasty, brutal, and short, especially in terms of faith and law. This work is more of a recasting of significant gospel narratives within the Roman and Jewish pressures of the time than a deeper retelling of Jesus' life. In doing so, the perennial questions of our relations to truth, power, faith, memory, and time are upended afresh and anew.
Kolchak serves up a lurid, intense work of pulp that flips the Synoptics on their heads to bang readers out of their comfortable encounters with the Gospel in order to humanize and isolate. As stories of Jesus go, this one refreshingly dismisses the pieties and conventions of Jesus as an enlightened man to any degree... Yet along with the gore and the shouting invective obscenities and the randomness of life there comes a message and hope that writes across two thousand years of telling strange and disparate stories about people in the backwater of a young empire in a very, very old and contested land. And that is why this work is still a gospel in its own right, even as grim as it is and as it should be. It is also why Next Year in Jerusalem is worth reading.
-Burke Gerstenschlager, BLEAK THEOLOGY

John Kolchak drastically re-imagines the life-story of Jesus of Nazareth in his novel Next Year in Jerusalem, telling the tale of illiterate, epileptic Yeshua Bar-Yosef, the bastard son of a Roman soldier who strikes out into the towns and cities of first-century Roman-occupied Judea. Eventually building a close-knit following, he comes into confrontation with the power of Rome in the person of Pontius Pilate and suffers an end Kolchak provocatively shapes into a gory and revelatory alternative to the Gospels.Throughout the novel, Kolchak revels in subversion and profanity, turning many of the most famous New Testament stories on their heads and creating an immensely sympathetic character in Yeshua along the way. This is a challenging book... but a very rewarding one as well.

Next Year in Jerusalem - For the Win.
By C. Ross
Magical realism in religious/ historical context. Always a subject that fascinates me. "Next Year in Jerusalem"; reimagines of the Story of Jesus or "a story" of Jesus. Yet Jesus is not the star of the show, it is Pontius Pilate who is the most memorable . The picture of Pilate is exceptionally defined and speaks to a man stuck in a boondock with no way to satisfy a single soul including his own. So he drinks. If you think about the times of Pilate and Jesus - the idea that Pilate may have handled this unsavory position with drink makes perfect sense. Judea was a backwater of misery and deprivation for the Jews and frankly not the Rome's greatest achievement in terms of their occupation record. Had it not been for the "story of Easter" unfolding during that period I have no doubt it would have rated a very small footnote in the historical record.

This fabulist tale places within itself, another theory of Yeshua working his way to the Godhead - including an exhausting trek around the Holyland. Retelling the tale would spoil the plot; the very point of taking on this journey to Golgotha.. And though it was was born solely in the author's fertile imagination; I think it could have happened. Almost anything could have played out in the story of Christ. We have to realize what exists is only hearsay. A handful memories that became legend; believed by billions . So Kolchak's telling - in my opinion - is just as viable and indeed much more fascinating than the one presented as "fact" for 2,000 years.

Judea at the start of the Common Era was chaotic, the realities grim and the need for a savior the driving force of the most Judeans. Occupation is always a frightening situation and although Pilate, tried in his drunken way, to manage his unruly province - he essentially relived the memories of a prior posting to Germania where he felt more at home (this probably boiled down to the existence of "European people" as subjects). As for the
messianic competition running parallel to the Roman occupation, the leitmotif of the story, my reading and observation leaves me with this: that being nailed to a cross is not exactly what you might forsee as your reward for trying to spread "the Good News". After all, it was the custom of the country, so what did the winner of the contest expect as a trophy? The Romans didn't want a savior. After all Pilate, downing another goblet of wine, had washed his hands of the whole matter.

Kolchak’s provocative novel introduces us to an all-too-human Jesus, ...
By Book Baby
Kolchak’s provocative novel introduces us to an all-too-human Jesus, an impoverished and uneducated itinerant, living in a troubled and turbulent time, and reimagines his life, death and teachings. Against the backdrop of Roman-occupied Judea, a land of political turmoil and religious factions, extreme oppression and nearly constant violence, Jesus struggles to find meaning in madness. With a motley crew of followers, he forms something of a family as he struggles with inner demons that leave him wondering about a father he never knew and suffering over a mother he believes he abandoned. Thrust into a role he did not seek, Jesus sees the cruelty around him and develops a simple philosophy to counter it (one that, over centuries, has been distorted, manipulated, perverted even). At the same time, a madman hungers for power and uses whatever depraved tactics he deems necessary to achieve it while a drunken civil servant indulges in memories and obsesses about his legacy. As Kolchak’s clever plot unfolds, it becomes inevitable that these three characters will eventually cross paths-- and in tragic fashion. Along the way, Kolchak masterfully tells their stories, vividly describing the chaos and confusion, the occasional beauty and the hideous brutality, the historical events and details of daily life in a fractious and dangerous land. Kolchak’s story is, by turns, hopeful and despairing. And, if it is at all a cautionary tale, it certainly includes the warning that religious fanaticism begets fear, hatred and unending terror. (The parallels between early Judea and today’s Israel/Palestine are obvious.) It also reminds us that, in the end, all is vanity.

A postmodern messiah story, starkly accurate in history and human nature
By J. Leon
If the Life of Brian was a book rather than a movie and it drove home its powerful points through postmodern starkness rather than irony and satire, it would be the closest comparison I could make to this book, and a somewhat incomplete one at that. This history buff in me loved this book. Details like the presence of Greeks living in the Holy Land are the kinds of well researched fine points that one rarely sees in other historical fiction set in this time and place. Then there are the characters. There is the illiterate preacher of a new philosophy of kindness who struggles to fill the stomachs of his followers but struggles even more to answer their most basic questions about the nature of existence. There is the Machiavellian revolutionary who has a sociopath's understanding about the nature of the human animal and who has no compunctions about using that understanding to further his aims. There is career Roman bureaucrat on a crappy assignment who struggles with existential despair but still retains the ruthless instincts of political survival which allow him to further the goals of the Empire and those of his own career. There are soldiers, seekers, beggars and runaways. Their paths all meet in an unpredicted curveball that was slyly woven from the beginning.

Life Before: A Novel, by K.L. Romo

Recent empty-nester Elaine Dearborn suddenly finds herself experiencing life as Eliza Darling, a reformed prostitute in 1907 Dallas, who is determined to shut down the sex trade that has taken so many young lives. Elaine’s life in the present becomes more and more intertwined with Eliza’s crusade one-hundred years earlier, and Elaine is tormented by the very real possibility that she’s losing her mind. That is, until she learns the truth about her past, and what it will mean for her future. As is true today, the sexual slavery business in the early-twentieth-century was alive and well, deplorably exploiting the young and vulnerable, but hidden within plain sight. Although the characters in this novel are fictional, The Virginia K. Johnson Home & Training Center for Women was a real institution in Dallas, devoted to giving young prostitutes a way out. Life Before is a book about personal strength and redemption – with a twist!

An interesting story, thought provoking and a little sad at times
By Bookfan
An interesting story, thought provoking and a little sad at times. This book shines a light on the prostitution slave trade at the beginning of the 20th century. A little known, forgotten and overlooked practice of abuse and cruelty, where often poor women and young girls were kidnapped or lured with false promises of a better life then subsequently enslaved, mistreated and forced to work as prostitutes.

The book starts when Elaine Dearborn, a writer, decides to restart her writing career after her kids have grown up and left home. One moment she is sitting in front of her lap-top and the next moment she finds herself strangely transported to 1907 Dallas where she experiences the life of Eliza Darling. Eliza is a former prostitute who has made it her mission to shut down the prostitution slave trade and save and protect the innocent lives of the girls involved. For Elaine it is a mystical experience that she can’t understand or explain. However she becomes fascinated with the past and finds herself returning to it, compelled to learn more about Eliza’s life.

The plot is described over two timelines: Elaine’s 2011 timeline and Eliza’s timeline between 1903 and 1907. The book appears to be well researched and although a story of fiction some of the institutions such as the Virginia K Johnson Home did really exist. The characters are complex and well described which brings them vividly to life. Real traits such as great strength of character endurance, compassion, loyalty and friendship are palpable. The story flowed well and once the characters became familiar it was hard to put the book down.

Overall this is an enjoyable and interesting novel. Fans of historical fiction will like it, as l did.

A compelling read
By Mary H
The novel begins with a great “what-if”: What if you were sitting at your computer, psyching yourself up to do some writing, when you suddenly were pulled back through time into someone else’s story? The would-be writer is Elaine Grace Dearborn, an empty-nester looking for new interests, living in Dallas in 2011. The “someone else” is Eliza Genevieve Darling, a former prostitute living in Dallas in the early nineteen hundreds. As the novel explores the strange connection between these two women, it also examines the harsh realities of the flourishing sex trade at the turn of the twentieth century, revealing it through various perspectives: Eliza, who is building a new life for herself at a home for ex-prostitutes; Mamie, a cotton-mill worker who decides that being a “sporting girl” in an elegantly furnished home is preferable to the constant sexual abuse of her boss at the cotton mill; and Rosa, a Mexican American girl who believes she’s being sent to Dallas for schooling, only to be held captive at a “whore-crib,” the worst type of all the establishments, where she immediately loses her innocence and almost all hope of a better life. When the point of view shifts back to Elaine in 2011, she connects the lives of these women to a difficult chapter in her own past. The author approaches difficult topics of oppression, loss, and guilt with a keen eye for historical detail, a compassionate heart, and a wry sense of humor that helps illuminate the darkness.

The book details the conditions so vividly I had to stop reading it to wrap my head around the evil and foul things that humans
By Spencan2011
This is another well researched, well written novel by this author. This time exploring the world of prostitution in early 20th century Dallas and this novel really brings history alive. It starts with writer, Elaine Dearborn a recent empty nester (which I immediately related to) suddenly experiences supernatural time travel (I say time travel because that is how I experienced this book) into the life of an early 20th century prostitute named Eliza that happens to have the same initials as herself. From there we delve into the lives of prostitutes and the conditions that existed at the time that lead young women into the lifestyle and the deplorable environments and circumstances that they endure. The book details the conditions so vividly I had to stop reading it to wrap my head around the evil and foul things that humans can do to one another. But there is also compassion, redemption and tolerance shown by Ms. Dixie and the Virginia K Johnson Home & Training Center for Women, which I learned was a real institution in Dallas devoted to giving young prostitutes a new life.

Elaine finds herself having a very real connection to the main character she has written about in more ways than one and I as the reader did also. The little that I do know about the sexual slavery business, this book could very well be describing what is going on today even in America. The end hints at more to come from Elaine Dearborn and I certainly hope so.

The Stars Bleed at Midnight, by Roland Yeomans

"All of us have a path to follow, and that path begins in the heart." - Samuel McCord

The world is filled with mystery and shadow.

What is life? The years bring us the conceit that we grasp life. What we grasp is but illusion.

Childlike we seize a fistful of seawater and say we hold the ocean. And even that slips through our grasping fingers.

As the ocean holds depths, man will never see so does life.

But one cursed man has seen more than most. And the enemies he has made doing so are now trying to un-make him.

From the undead halls of power in colonial Washington, D.C., to the bloody plains of India, to the mystery-shrouded deserts of Egypt, Texas Ranger Captain Samuel McCord is spoken of in whispers lest he take notice of the speakers.

Follow his cursed footsteps from 1826 and the death bed of President John Adams to the blood-stained hills and ravines of 1857 India. And finally to 1895 Cairo and the far deserts wastes of Egypt.

Some fool has disturbed the sleep of something that should never have been awakened. And it is up to McCord, his deadly wife, Meilori Shinseen, Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, Nikola Tesla, and Lt. Winston Churchill to keep the world from slipping into a new Dark Age of madness and death.

But this time, the past has caught up with McCord in the form of the undead Abigail Adams and the revenant Empress Theodora of the Unholy Roman Empire.

Worse, an ancient Pestilence in the body of a mummy child now reaches out for him and those he loves.

And his friends and even the world itself may soon pay the terrible price if Samuel McCord cannot be more than what he believes he can be.

Texas Ranger Sam McCord Encounters Ancient Mysteries In 19th Century Egypt
By Inger Wiltz
In this sequel to Death In the House of Life, the adventures of Texas Rranger Sam McCord and his companions continue in the deserts of 19th century Egypt. Sam, his wife Meilori and old friends Samuel Clemens, Oscar Wilde, Ada Byron, and Nikola Tesla set out toward a destination that holds a very different meaning for each of them. Along the way, they encounter strange and otherworldly characters, some undead, some sinister, others not. Roland Yeomans novels are poetic, his English is as beautiful as any you will find in a modern book, and his imagination knows no bounds.

The Egyptian Sands Forever Shift
By DG Hudson
Don't look too close or you might see that which hides in the darkness. . .or an evil that's been slumbering for milleniums. . .
Egyptian lore lures with its unknowns, its mysteries and the characters and stories that Roland Yeomans places in the setting of bygone times. Samuel McCord, Nikola Tesla, Mark Twain/Samuel Clements, Meilori/Sekhmet, Bastet, a young Winston Churchill, Oscar Wilde and other names come and go in this riveting tale which begins in the United States, jumps to India and then to Egypt. This is a story of intrigue, betrayal, love, friendship, and adventure. It is a magnificent waltz of power and control which fluctuates as various enemies make their attempts to foil the expedition. The 'Stars Bleed at Midnight' follows 'Death in the House of Life', the first book about the Egyptian expedition, the story that introduced the characters and one which I enjoyed very much.
I recommend taking your time reading this one, savoring the exotic location and the interactions between characters. Consider this quote by the character 'Daystar': "There are none more complicit in one's undoing than one's own heart. . ."
