Engaging, Authentic!

Loved this book ... great character development. Having been to Israel, I could easily relate to all the sites around Bethlehem, Jerusalem and the holy land. A quick read, and yet very captivating and thought provoking. The moving story of forgiveness is one that could make the world a better place, if more people would take the step of forgiving in their own lives.

Impressions of Rebekah Redeemed

The cover of Rebekah Redeemed caught my eye. It is simple but attractive. The color is a metallic silver gray with a rich sheen. A beautiful girl with a mysterious expression is the model depicting Rebekah. She looks exactly the way I would imagine Rebekah must have looked. The script included on the front cover includes the book's title in big bold letters, the author's name large enough to attract attention, and a question, "Can she forgive the past?" The title with its alliteration is excellent. In two catchy words, it tells the story of the book. All these elements are laid out to give the book a professional look and to make it inviting.

The typeface is easy to read, and the first paragraph intrigues me. A little detail such as soup made from bread and water says volumes about the impoverished shepherds. Rebekah snuggling up to a motherless lamb comes to life on the first page. Then the writer jumps straight into a life-changing tragedy in the little girl's life.

The believable plot is full of tension, enough to make most readers turn the pages. Even though it is easy to suspect what will happen in the end, it is difficult to know how Rebekah will gain her redemption. All the struggles of her childhood cause the reader to empathize with her.

Rebekah is a strong young woman, never allowed to be a girl. It is a bit difficult to imagine a young woman who could do all she did at such a young age, but the author skillfully shows us that people grew up faster two thousand years ago.

Much of the story is told through the young girl's eyes, but occasionally the book contains explanations going beyond what a young girl can comprehend. The point of view seems to alternate between the girl's personal experiences and explanations of the background. There are simply things we need to know that the writer must tell us.

And the book contains many facts worth knowing. It is obvious that extensive research backs up the story. The setting is both convincing and informative.

The last chapters depict poignant scenes that make the book especially inspiring. Dianne Sagan makes a strong statement about humankind's relationship with Jesus the Messiah.

Another theme running throughout the book is the way women throughout history have been subservient creatures. The author shows the way Jesus, in contrast to most men of the time, valued women, as well as the needy, the humble, and the sick.

Several times while reading the story I wished for more development. Some scenes show in detail what is happening in the story. Other times there are summaries of the action of the excellent plot. I realize it would be impossible to show and not tell a story of this magnitude in a short book, but I would enjoy seeing what the author could do if she developed Rebekah Redeemed in greater detail.

Many books currently written seem to have problems with using the verb lay when lie is needed, misplacing apostrophes, and using object pronouns when subject pronouns are required. This book is no exception. With attention paid to these details, Rebekah Redeemed could be a masterpiece.

Besides providing entertainment, this novel presents a strong witness to Christ. Highly recommended.

Very realistic
By Living for The Eternal
I read this book in about a day. This is a great story of learning to forgive. It also gives a glimpse into what life was like in our savior's day. The character is someone everyone can relate to in their own life. Looking through Rebecca's eyes was like being in Bethleham yourself. I really enjoyed this book. It is well worth it.

An unexpected, exciting sequel that was worth the wait.

I've been eagerly waiting to read the next instalment in Christina Ochs series, and it was worth the wait! I thought her various, unique, dimensional characters had gone through hard times before. Boy, was I ever wrong! The stakes became astronomical, the adventure and action intense, and the drama painful because not everyone makes it out alive. There was one particular farewell that really hurt me, and made the final chapter even more difficult to bear. It didn't quite make me want to throw my ereader across the room, but there were a couple instances where I had to re-read certain chapter to make sure what I thought happened actually happened, and that was when the feels kicked in with steel-toed boots.

Every character has fantastic growth, new ones are eager, and I even found myself feeling a little sorry for Teodora at some points. If you've read the first book, Rise of the Storm, you know how insane that idea is. Oh, and if you're wondering if our dear empress gets any worse? SHE TOTALLY DOES.

I always look forward to Ochs contributions to the Weekend Writing Warrior community (wewriwa.com). She's an amazing writer, and her love for the series is awesome. Her characters and interest in history make for a truly fantastic read, and I recommend this to all fantasy lovers. Especially if you like Game of Thrones. There are points that will touch your heart, make you gasp, hurt you, and make you want to stand up and cheer. Of course, this leaves with one more major question... What happens next?!

Game of Thrones without the literal magic and with tasteful fade-to-black

Valley of the Shadow by Christina Ochs is the second book in The Desolate Empire series. You can read my review of the first book, Rise of the Storm, here. In the spirit of avoiding spoilers, this review will use intentionally vague language and focus more heavily on my reactions to the novel as opposed to its content.

Picking right up where Rise of the Storm left off, Valley of the Shadow begins by following the aftermath of a large battle. Throughout the novel, the characters on either side of the empire's opposing forces attempt to lobby for their side, as well as find a piece of happiness and respite from the misery of war.

Stylistically, Valley of the Shadow reads much like its predecessor - the chapters are short and the perspectives rotate, keeping the reader moving quickly, but smoothly, through the action. There is never a dull moment, and each chapter leaves the reader anxiously awaiting the next turn of events.

As for the characters, Ochs continues their development with steadiness and grace. More and more layers of their personalities are revealed as they are put through harrowing trials and given small victories. It's probably evident from my language, but several of the characters face traumatizing events. The overall mood of Valley of the Shadow is rather bleak, and things seem to go from bad to worse for characters on both sides of the war. However, through it all, Ochs offers enough moments of comedy (and a few key victories) to balance out the heartache. And, as I already alluded, the resulting character development from these tragedies is inspiring and satisfying.

Overall, I enjoyed Valley of the Shadow just as much, if not more, than Rise of the Storm. The pace is quick, without being neck-snapping, the characters are complex and appropriately lovable or hate-able, and the conclusion wraps up enough plot lines to be satisfying, but leaves enough open to have the reader anxious for the next book. As always, Ochs's writing style is eloquent enough to captivate the reader, but straight-forward enough as to not get in the way of the story. Her world is detailed and only becomes more interesting as she reveals more of it to the reader.

For those of you on the fence about reading Rise of the Storm or Valley of the Shadow, I'll leave you with this final thought: This series is Game of Thrones without the literal magic (so far) and with tasteful fade-to-black that keeps it appropriate for all ages. I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys fantasy, action, medieval-style tales, and good old-fashioned sword fighting.

Just as great as the first!

This is the second book in the series.

It is just as great as the first book. Although I have classified this series as "fantasy" it truly has no classification it is unique. There are great battles which are wonderfully written, there are Princes and nobility, there is some romance and alot of tragedy.

I can see how much of an influence George RR Martin has on this author, especially with regards to killing off characters you would never think would die. I like this. Lots of surprises.

There were no editing issues that I noticed, the pace was staedy, the characters seemed real and the antagoinsts even had a bit (if not much) humanity.

I eagerly await the third book which seems to be due out this spring.

I am happy to report that this one doesn't leave the reader hanging so much at the end as did the first. (I was relieved that the next book was available LOL.)

Excellent Understated Suspense

I mentally classified this as a 'thriller', but it wasn't really - more of a novel of suspense. There were many threads of the story - a little suspense, a little mystery, a little romance, a little supernatural - and over it all there was a sense of events that were barrelling along with the characters powerless to stop them. The ending was almost inevitible, although you didn't know exactly what was going to happen until the time came. But when it did happen, you just *knew* that there were no other possible alternatives.

The author made a point several times in the book about 'boundary lands' (places where two worlds meet) and the entire story illustrates this. The Riverhouse is a place where opposites meet and collide: good and evil; joy and grief; love and hate; past and present; reality and fantasy.

Highly recommended!

Note on Kindle formatting: Perfect, in terms of format. There were a few grammatical errors (homophones) but they did not detract from the reading experience.

Well written

I *really* enjoyed this book, it's well written and the plot kept me riveted throughout (I could hardly put it down). Like the main character, I kept guessing wrongly until the end, but appreciated the twists and turns.

For those worried about it, this is a ghost story, but I wouldn't call it a horror story.

Formatting for the Kindle is excellent, and the only tiny gripe I have is the US colloquialism, different than, which is used several times.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

So Glad I found this book

I decided to read The Riverhouse after finding Mr. G. Norman Lippert's wonderful fan fiction, James Potter and the Hall of Elder's Crossing. I so enjoyed Mr. Lippert's take on JK Rowling's wizarding world I wanted to see how something he had gotten published would stand up. I was not disappointed!

Riverhouse is book with so many twists and turns and keeps you guessing until the end! I truly enjoyed it from beginning to end. Riverhouse is not to be confused with HP type books. This one by Mr. Lippert has nothing to do with HP and stands well on it's own two feet.

I look forward to Mr. Lippert's next book and encourage others to read this one as well as his James Potter series if you are a HP fan. I hope to hear in the future that he will finish his JP book series!

If you like magical realism, rather than straight-on fantastical fantasy or steampunk...

Before I started reading the stories in this book, after reading only the preface and introduction, I blithely blew this anthology off as "Steampunk, with a side of Fae". It most definitely is not. Each story was engrossing; spellbinding (as promised on the tin) and a number of them were quite dark. Theodora Goss's "Estella Saves the Village" was unabashed Great Expectations fanfic, while Cat Valente's "We Without Us Were Shadows" is intriguing Real-Person Fiction of the troubled Bronte family. Veronica Schanoes' "Phosporus" added a fantastical twist to a thought-provoking historical event (and noted that behind every clockwork-wielding, hot-air-balloon-sailing, tea-drinking Steampunk hero or heroine, there's very likely an overworked and underpaid Downstairs staff.) Kaaron Warren's "The Unwanted Women of Surrey" held up a mirror to a twenty-first century that bears some disturbing resemblance to the nineteenth. And Elizabeth Bear's "The Governess" - all I can say is, wow. I didn't expect that.

These stories aren't all gloom, though, by any means! Elizabeth Wein's "For the Briar Rose" was a lovely ode to the pre-Raphaelites and the women who both inspired and tidied up after them, and the title story, by Delia Sherman, was a hoot - this is a Queen Victoria I've never imagined!

If you like magical realism, rather than straight-on fantastical fantasy or steampunk, then you will probably enjoy this!

What a treasure!

I'm in a bit of a magical Victoriana kick and this anthology completely satisfied my appetite. While I didn't care for all the stories in it, I enjoyed most, especially once I found some written by authors I have grown to like very much.

I love Leanna Renee Hieber's writing so I went straight to "Charged." As usual, the writing is just exquisite and the story is amazing. She is such a gifted storyteller!

Some more stories I want to highlight as the best of the bunch are: Catherynne Valente's "We Without Us Were Shadows", Delia Sherman's "Queen Victoria's Book of Spells", Elizabeth Bear's "The Governess" and "La Reome D'Enfer."

I was engrossed for days reading this.

Fantasy set in the Victorian era, NOT steampunk

I made the mistake of thinking this was a steampunk anthology; it's not. It's Gaslamp Fantasy; fantasy stories set in the Victorian era with magic included. Here you will no find brass goggles or airship pirates. But it was a happy mistake, because I enjoyed this book very much.

Victoria reigned for a very long time, so there is variety of events, inventions, real people, and movements to choose from when writing in the era. A couple of the stories are actually about Victoria; the title story is, if you know about the relationship between Victoria and Prince Albert, heartbreaking as well as a warning to be careful what you wish for when working magic. I loved `For Briar Rose' simply because it involved Edward Burne-Jones and William and Jane Morris; the pre-Raphaelite artistic movement is simply my favorite ever. In other stories, the Bronte family, Frankenstein, Scrooge and the Crachit family show up. There is true horror- one story features one of the women who worked in the match factories who developed the terrible `Phossy jaw' where the phosphate from the matches eats away the jaw bones. And `The Fairy Enterprise' wherein an amoral industrial decides to take advantage of gullible society and ends up getting what he deserves made is a dark story, but made me laugh.

It's a very solid anthology; while there were, of course, a couple of stories I didn't like, they are all good and well written and I'm glad I read them.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (French: Notre-Dame de Paris) is an 1831 French novel written by Victor Hugo. It is set in 1482 in Paris, in and around the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris. The book tells the story of a poor barefoot Gypsy girl (La Esmeralda) and a misshapen bell-ringer (Quasimodo) who was raised by the Archdeacon (Claude Frollo). Esméralda, a beautiful 16-year-old gypsy with a kind and generous heart, captures the hearts of many men but especially Quasimodo’s adopted father, Claude Frollo. Frollo is torn between his lust and the rules of the church. He orders Quasimodo to get her. Quasimodo is caught and whipped and ordered to be tied down in the heat. Esméralda seeing his thirst, offers him water. It saves her, for she captures the heart of the hunchback.

Disturbing yet enjoyable.

Contrary to popular opinion the novel Le Notre Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo is not primarily about the deformed bell-ringer Quasimodo. Quasimodo's role is actually surprisingly small in the story, which makes you wonder why the English translater's chose "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" as the translation for the title. Actually, as the original French title would indicate, it is the cathedral itself that is the focus of the book. This is why in the unabridged editions of this book you will find numerous chapters that seemingly have nothing to do with the plot of the story. This is the books weakest point, and it may turn many people away from the book. Once you get into the plot, however, it is iimpossible to put the book down. The characters are intriguing: composer Pierre Gringoire, archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, once a paragon of virtue now tormented by his corrupt love for a gipsy girl, L'Esmerelda, the naive gipsy dancer, Phoebus, the selfish, egotistical captain of the guards, and of course Qausimodo, a deaf, deformed bellringer. The relationships between these characters are complex and dark but they make an unforgettable story. The story is never, from front to back, a happy one, so if you are looking for a book that makes you "feel good" this is not the one for you. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a good book to read, that is unafraid to deal with the darker side of reality, I highly recommend "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."

When A Public Hanging Was Entertainment For The Masses

Victor Hugo never wrote a book titled THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. Some early translator gave it that name. What Hugo wrote was a book called NOTRE DAME OF PARIS (in French: NOTRE DAME de PARIS). This is not a book that is primarily about a hunchback named Quasimodo or a beautiful Gypsy girl named Esmerelda. It is a book narrowly focused on the Cathedral of Notre Dame situated on the Ile de la Cite in the center of Paris and, more broadly, on the 15th century city of Paris. This was a Paris where public executions or any form of punishment involving public humiliation were the highest forms of entertainment and drew the kinds of crowds that we would see at a major sports event today. If this book is not read with this in mind, the reader might well be disappointed because he came to it with a different sort of book in mind. I would like to congratulate the one previous reviewer who reviewed the book on the basis of its actual scope and intent.
Now to the human aspects of the novel, the plot so to speak: There are no perfect angels in this book. After all, Esmerelda was a part of a band of thieves who came to public gatherings for the express purpose of seeing what they could "gather" for themselves. Quasimodo was not a misshapen humanitarian. He had been known to carry out a dirty deed or two himself. As for the rest of the characters, there's not a role model in the bunch. To Hugo's credit, we really care about Quasimodo and Esmerelda, "warts and all." This is one indication of good writing.
The basic plot, devoid of any embellishments, is rather simple. Esmerelda, out of humanitarian instincts, comes to Quasimodo's aid in a small but meaningful way when he really needs a friend. Quasimodo, as best as he is able, falls in love with Esmerelda. When the arch villain, Archdeacon Dom Frollo, who is also in love with Esmerelda but has been rejected by her, tries to have her hanged, Quasimodo saves her, but only for a while. Eventually she is executed under circumstances where Quasimodo can't came to her rescue. Quasimodo throws our villain, Dom Frollo, to his death from the heights of the cathedral.
In a way, its a shame that when an author creates a memorable character, or an opera composer writes an unforgettable aria, these creations take on such lives of their own that they overshadow the novel or opera from which they come. That has certainly been one of the fates of this book. Too many readers have come to it searching for the cute little Disney Quasimodo, or even Charles Laughton's unforgettable Quasimodo from the 1939 movie. When it turned out that the scope of this book was so much more comprehensive, they were disappointed for all the wrong reasons.
A note about reading Hugo, or any other author worth reading. One should read for enjoyment, and, where it is available, for information that will increase one's understanding of this world. I have noticed that several reviewers, some of whom didn't like this book, talked of its length, or of Hugo's use of "similes and metaphors." Anyone who is busy trying to analyze a book for styles or techniques doesn't have the right inclination to enjoy the book, to enjoy the atmospheres the author has created, or to get the emotional impact that was the author's intent.
I would recommend THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME as a book that is well worth reading if read for the right reasons. Don't read it, or any book, looking for "techniques" or for "neo-modernism," or "anything-else-isms." I guarantee you that's not what the author had in mind when he wrote his novel. He meant it to be read, not analyzed.

"An Exemplary Edition of Hugo's Classic"

Walter J. Cobb's complete and unabridged edition of Victor Hugo's classic, the "Hunchback of Notre-Dame," is without a doubt the best to be found. His translation retains the original romanticism and tragedy so characteristic of the great novelist's works. One would search in vain to find a better edition than Cobb's full-throated rendition of this great masterpiece of French Literature.

Historical and Intelligent “Bug light”

I’m very impressed with Sibley’s “Bug light”. This story is, to say the least, an interesting and intellectual ride back into the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s. It allows you to explore a lifetime of research by a young, curious black man all the way to the end of his remarkable life. These were the days of the unbearably horrific happenings of slavery, and the young man did experienced just that. Although most of the story takes place in his post-slavery years, the references that are given in the story to his life as a boy will confirm the presence of the hardships in that era for a young man to gain a formal education.

I found my mind very easily self-illustrating due to the author’s brilliant ability to take you directly to the scene. “Bug light” definitely allowed me to clearly visualize an intriguing laboratory from back in that day. With the ever-famous, well-known names grabbing your attention (aside from Dr. Carver), like Thomas Edison and Booker T. Washington (just to name a couple), this science-fiction piece gives you an image of what it was like to be a highly intellectual scientist and inventor in the olden days. The laboratories must have been anything but lavish due to the impoverished and newly formed black schools and institutes of that era. To picture the determination of a young black scientist beating the odds that were invariably stacked against him is a beautiful thing.

The magnificent and inquisitive mind of Dr. Carver is brought to life from early on in this short story. Dr. Carver is highly driven, intelligent and a true scientist and developer. He dedicated a lifetime to his research and didn’t do it for the recognition that he did indeed receive, but rather an enthusiasm for being the great bio chemist that he was. In the day of poor black schools, Dr. Carver presses on with his research and perseveres through the racial stigma that undoubtedly plagued a black man, much less a black scientist in that time. He was truly dedicated to teaching and so very passionate about his work. He knew he had revolutionary material in one of his specific findings, yet he doesn’t want to splash the world with his private research just for the spotlight effects.

The “Organic light” theory in itself was such a fascinating aspect of Dr. Carver’s career. If race related challenges hadn’t kept him from utilizing the same advantages of other inventors and scientists of that era, history could have taken a different course. The fact that his notebooks mysteriously went missing after his death tells me that some underhanded activity took place. In addition, the fact that the government agency, OLEP (Organic Light Energy Project) was developed, leads me to believe that some very unscrupulous government behavior took place regarding Carver’s lost notebooks.

This piece allows you to wonder who in fact actually dedicated themselves to the significant research that the apparent historical figures have been recognized and accredited for world wide. Things we may speculate but may never undoubtedly be certain of.
Although Dr. Carver lived in a time in which racism was so very alive and prevalent, he conquered his goals through perseverance and passion. He was such a profound part of the bio chemistry development. I’m going to give this story two thumbs up. Very interesting read for a short story. Sibley is an expert at intertwining science-fiction with an attention-grabbing and interesting plot!

Haunting, powerful, mysterious - a must-read peek into the mind of a scientific genius

I just finished reading BUG LIGHT by John Sibley and I can't stop thinking about it. This is the kind of thought-provoking, thematically rich book that opens up a window to the past and entices the reader with questions of science, history, culture, all wrapped up in a resounding mystery.

The book is a collection of fictionalized excerpts from the personal scientific diaries of George Washington Carver. You may remember Carver as the legendary African American botanist, inventor and scientific genius that became famous for his research into cotton, peanuts, soybeans, and sweet potatoes. Carver was a contemporary to Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Henry Ford and other titans of science and industry, and this book hints at a greatness that has previously gone unexplored.

Carver was so much more than the grandfatherly peanut researcher that has been cemented in our collective popular imagination - he was an underappreciated genius laboring inside his laboratory at the groundbreaking but under-funded Tuskegee Institute, where he becomes fascinated with fireflies and the chemical properties responsible for the flickering light. He wonders if he can isolate these chemicals and apply them to a host of other plants and even the human body. He labors in his studies for years, eventually developing a complex "Organic Light Plant Theory." In other words, Carver is single-handedly developing the tenets of biochemistry. But when Carver's powerful research comes to light, what will become of his theories? The book thoughtfully explores the mystery at the heart of Carver's research, including the possibility his diaries - and his scientific legacy - being lost or stolen.

This book offers lots of enticing suspense and mystery, but one of my favorite parts of reading BUG LIGHT was learning about Carver's background and the societal forces that shaped his destiny. A man born into slavery, who worked as a house servant as a young boy, whose voice never deepened because he was castrated as a young man to serve his white family (apparently a very common practice in those days), he witnessed the vicious lynching of a black man in his youth. He manages, somehow, to escape a life of poverty and slavery to become one of the greatest thinkers of his generation. Without the financial support of his peers, with "the scourge of racism" standing between him and his destiny, he manages to excel as a young university student and eventually a researcher. Still, the book is also a heart-breaking testament to the insidiousness of racism, how it keeps great minds from reaching their full extent of greatness, and also keeps the rest of us from benefiting from their genius.

This is a short, powerfully hypnotic read that delves into the history of an extraordinary mind. If you care at all about science, history, great minds in history, or just enjoy a good mystery, sit down to read BUG LIGHT.

A thought provoking and emotional read

I recently read John Sibley's anthology "Bug Light". It was a reading experience out of the norm for me - in the best way possible. As I read each story, I found myself stopping to think about various issues raised by Mr Sibley's writing, such as the causes and effects of racial (and other) discrimination and spiritual belief as it relates to our concrete world. At other times I had to interrupt my reading due to my emotional reaction to the characters and events in each story. I felt connected to the characters, what they did and what was done to them. The best writing makes the reader think and feel; that goal has been skillfully accomplished by John Sibley in "Bug Light", Each reader may think and feel differently, but the point is that they thought and felt something.
Mr. Sibley used different literary genres: general fiction, historical fiction and science fiction to accomplish his purpose. I am not usually a fan of science fiction, but the strength of Mr. Sibley's story lines and his use of language made me see beyond the genre, to the universality of the theme's upon which each story is based. His use of the first person to tell each story made it so easy to feel a part of that story.
I will recommend Bug Light to my family and friends, in particular those who share my background in the formal study of history, along with a real love for the field.
I am looking forward to reading other books written by John Sibley

Letitia Munro - the first women in the founding of White Australia

Richardson shows poignantly where the Australian ‘free spirit’ and attitudes to authority stem from. As a glimpse into the times of just over 200 years ago, it is a fine historical record. I enjoyed this work immensely; it should be compulsory reading for all, especially Australians.

A 6th generation descendant First Fleeter, Kev Richardson continues his authentic historical account of the thousands of convicts imprisoned on New South Wales to found a new culture. Letitia never realized when sentenced for stealing a partial bolt of cloth, that she would become a memorable part of Australian history.
It’s like no history I’ve ever read. The voice in this work carries the reader right into the trying times of convict life—I found this book an informative account, written the way I like to read history. Richardson makes you live the part of the suffering and struggles of the times. I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Lee Swift led a dual life for many years. During the day, he worked at a Fortune 500 company. At night and on weekends, he pursued his true passion, writing. In the beginning, Lee collaborated with his sister and writing partner, Angelique Torres. They wrote two plays that made it to the stage, and also an award-winning screenplay. When Lee lost his sister to cancer in 2003, he stopped writing for a few years. But the dream never left him, and little by little Lee began working on what would become his debut novel, Morvicti Blood. Lee grew up in a military family that moved frequently, both abroad and in the States. He currently resides in Dallas, Texas. Lee is a member of the honorary society of International Thriller Writers.

Wow! Just Wow!

I am not typically a reader, a book must catch my attention from the beginning....the fact that I finished this book in a matter of days speaks volumes! I first read The Morvicti Execution and was hooked! Morvicti Blood did not disappoint. I loved the action, the detail, suspense and the characters. I could not put it down. I loved the subtle teases at the end and can't wait for the next book!

A wild ride

A modern thriller with a very old-world flavor. Swift offers just about anything the modern pulp-thriller reader could desire from CIA safe houses to shadowy secret societies, hidden royal courts to extremist assassins.

One of the most refreshing elements Swift brings to the table is the skeleton of a strong female character who would rather ride headlong into hell than be left behind like a cringing damsel in distress. Angelique could do with some fleshing out but her beginnings are promising. Her brother, Austin, is your typical rock-jawed ex-soldier type but I can live with a trope, provided his adventures are this engaging. And it is, after all, the first story. Austin may gain a little more dimension down the line. And other characters make up for anything Austin might not bring to the table. I found myself wanting to get back to the adventures of the Doc more than once. Who would imagine finding an aged geneticist with a health condition exciting? And yet Doc was a very engaging character that I hope to see more of in the future.

There were stumbles in this offering but I think the author has a lot more to show us and I can't wait to read it!

Easy to read

Just read Morvicti Blood in 3 days. Easy to read, difficult to put down.

As with the prequel I would compare it to Dan Brown with a little Count Dracula mixed in. Every chapter has great action and new developments. Never a dull moment. The author has just the right amount of details and descriptions, maintaining a great pace throughout the book with good character development.

It has a well defined ending, yet sets up very nicely for a sequel, which I will be looking forward to.
