Review
This title, a hybrid of historical fiction and romance novel, will appeal to those who seek an introduction to the world of female spies during the Civil War.
Pamela Bauer Mueller draws from a variety of sources and relates an interesting and essentially accurate rendition of two attractive young women, a Northerner and a Southerner, who engage in espionage to further their respective causes.
The author includes an extensive resource list for further investigation. The research is thorough, and the writing is brisk. --Thomas J. Ryan, December 2015 Civil War News
The truth that the subject of American History is not well-covered in our public schools is a known fact. So there is much value in a novel that sheds light on a major episode of our history that tested, sculpted and defined our countries backbone- the Civil War.
The Dancing Delilahs, shines a light on two lesser known female spies of the Civil War, hailing from opposite sides of the North/South divide. It is written simply with a young female audience in mind, infused with both their emotional response to the plaguing disruptions the war wreaked on their young lives as well as the selfless efforts they made to help the military of their respective allegiance win the ebb and flow of each skirmish.
Pamela Mueller does not tackle the bigger issues of war, of who is right or wrong in the issue of slavery, or get into the weeds of each battle. Rather, she chronicles the collision of war into two families and two communities, one in Southern Fairfax County Virginia, and the other in the Louisville Kentucky region. And most notably the constant shifting of the line in the sand of who controlled the frontline of the real estate of both. For the waves of foreign soldiers commandeering properties was a constantly changing tide, literally from week to week. One day you could be feeding and housing the brass of your enemy and the next tending to the wounded of your brethren in your own living room.
The book has alternating chapters following the escapades of both heroines, Antonia Ford from the Confederate South and Pauline Cushman of the Federalist North. It is written in a first person diary style of passages during two of the most heated and decisive battle years of the Civil War, 1861-1863. For the reader, that format does break the flow of the storyline of each woman, but it also makes the point that in many ways their tales are parallel. The depth of their allegiances drove them to daring lengths, even risking their lives, to uncover and deliver crucial information on the enemies whereabouts or their secret battle plans. Whether it was tidbits that literally fell into their lap through overheard conversations, or detailed plans obtained through more subversive clandestine actions, their harvest was passed onto elite military of such powerful ilk as General Beauregard, General "Stonewall" Jackson, General Lee, and the elusive Mosby's Rangers.
Both women paid the heavy price of painful stints of imprisonment, and each managed to make use of soliciting the endearments of male officers to help them survive any unpleasantries, enabling them to live to tell the tales.
Antonia shared in the penchant of the southern woman with selfless efforts in tending to not only the wounded of their beloved grey-coats, but also the northern enemy soldiers being housed in their area. The author lathered on a generous helping of the civility, in dialogue and deed, that the Southerners maintained in dealing with their occupiers.
Pauline played a more calculated role. Impressively she managed to pass herself off as a traitor to the north, the whole plan orchestrated by Federalist officials, while moving amongst the southern loyalists, for which she could have received an academy award. In the end, she was bestowed the honorary title of Army "Major" supported by President Lincoln himself, proving the importance of her activities.
Both heroines used their attractive feminine qualities in aiding their cause and a good part of the story is relegated to the love lives of the two extremely charming woman.
The fact that the book is based on the true story of these two female Civil War spies gives it credence and value in opening the young adult audience to the unique and valued role women played in our country's history. It certainly has set me off to do more research on the subject. --Karen Chutsky, February 2016 Midwest Book Review

Female Civil War Spies Come to Life in 'Dancing Delilahs'
By Peggy J. Shaw
Those who enjoy American history know the men of the Civil War, men such as the elusive John Mosby, who captured a U.S. general with a handful of Confederates and became known as The Gray Ghost. William Tecumseh Sherman, who marched to the sea and then offered the City of Savannah to Lincoln as Christmas present. And Ulysses S. Grant, who divided the Confederacy with the capture of Vicksburg, and then forced Lee’s surrender at Appomattox.
Women’s contributions during the Civil War, however, have been less renowned—until now.
In her new book, The Dancing Delilahs, Pamela Bauer Mueller brings to life two women who operated as real-life Civil War spies. Mueller, an award-winning author of several nonfiction novels, weaves together tales of adventure, romance, and mystery into a book told through the unique voices of two, courageous women: Antonia Ford and Pauline Cushman. The result is a compelling story of the Civil War from the female point of view.
Mueller, in fact, tells the women’s stories through Ford and Cushman’s own voices, an accomplishment made possible by the author’s meticulous research into primary source materials, such as letters and diaries. The resulting material gives readers insight into the women’s Civil War work, as well as their families, their loves, and their daily lives.
“I want my readers to think about their private relationships, their intimate lives, and even their sufferings,” Mueller wrote in her Author’s Note.
Actress Pauline Cushman, a widow and mother, was arrested by Union troops after she gave toasted the Confederacy during a play, though her gesture was a ruse. And Antonia Lord was living the quiet life of a Virginia socialite when she overheard secrets about troop movements that could be relayed to Confederate Gen. J.E.B. Stuart.
“Their choices would reshape their futures,” Mueller wrote in her Author’s Note to The Dancing Delilahs. Indeed, those choices did. And what happens next, as the women’s futures unfold, is what makes the book so interesting.
Readers who love history and biography will enjoy this spy thriller set largely between 1861–1865, during America’s most divisive time. “I have always been captivated by history—its broad sweep and its intimate corners,” Mueller wrote. “And I especially love to discover women who are edgy, salty and somewhat eccentric.
“History is a connection between the present and the past,” she added, “and sometimes the voices we want to hear are barely audible.”
The 19th-century voices of Cushman and Lord, however, are now finally being heard—loud and clear, for the first time—and the result is an entertaining and informative ride.
Pamela Bauer Mueller’s other works include: Splendid Isolation: The Jekyll Island Millionaire’s Club 1888-1942, a fictionalized account of the wealthy elite who once vacationed at Jekyll Island, Ga.; Water To My Soul: The Story of Eliza Lucas Pinckney, set in South Carolina; and Lady Unveiled, a sweeping historical saga about the life of Catharine Greene Miller.

History, Conflicts, Spies, Oh my!
By Doc
Here Pam has given us a not often seen glimpse into our nation's Civil War. Much has been written about the horrors and hardships of battles fought by patriotic men of the Union and Confederacy, but here we are transported into the lives of two women, equally dedicated to their respective causes. They were both spies! Each was gifted with different skills from very different upbringings, that enabled them to accomplish their dangerous tasks. The wise reader knows that wars are fought and won not only on the fields of battle, but via logistics and gathering of intelligence as well. Pauline and Antonia became immersed into the world of wartime subterfuge and each was very successful at their tasks. Home front and battle front are described accurately in fine detail. Personal sacrifice marks the character of each woman. Do yourself a favor and enjoy this tale of two woman warriors as they use beauty and brains to aid their respective causes. Find a comfortable chair and read on!
