Platonic soul imagined
By Richard E. Hayes
HYPATIA (novel) 1899, by Charles Kingsley
1600 years ago a virtuous woman was killed by a mob of Christians in Alexandria because she was a "pagan" teacher of philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, and because she was thought to support the civil authority in a contest with Bishop Cyril for control of the city. (An early fight over church-state power relations.) Her story has shamed and fascinated Christendom ever since. Scant facts about her have opened the gates to a flood of legend, speculation, invention. Kingsley set out to write a historically accurate account of Hypatia (he later wrote a nonfiction account based on his research) and succeeds to a good extent. His portrait of this marvelous city, the largest commercial port on the Mediterranean and the greatest center of learning in the world, is worth reading. His inventions of Hypatia's lectures and Cyril's sermons are plausible. His invention of a dialogue between Hypatia and a former student now convert to Christianity, a discussion of her Platonism and his theology, is interesting if hardly plausible as history. Did Hypatia believe in the old gods, betray her principles in a scheme to become queen of a southern empire, become disillusioned with her philosophy, submit to the magic of an old Jewess (a nasty stereotype), lean toward Christianity? I don't think so, but the scant facts make it hard to write a story. (There are few scholarly books on her life. A good companion to this novel is HYPATIA OF ALEXANDRIA, by Maria Dzielska, Harvard University Press, 1995, a survey of sources and of literary treatments. She erroneously states that Kingsley has Hypatia convert to Christianity.) Kingsley makes Hypatia a woman in her twenties, where scholars say she was about sixty. This lets him make her a love interest for three of his characters. Among the city's polyglot population is a band of Goth soldiers. Kingsley invents an attack on the Goth stronghold by the Christian fanatics after they killed Hypatia, and a lively slaughter of the fanatics ensues -- Hypatia's revenge, a novelistic pleasure. Some thought the novel indecent, but it was one of the most popular in England for 50 years. Kingsley was Church of England rector to a country parish all his life. He was sympathetic to the Chartist movement, he was allied with the Christian Socialism movement founded by his friend and fellow priest F. D. Maurice. He quickly embraced the scientific theories of Lyell and Darwin. He opposed the "High Church" movement of men like John Henry Newman, with whom he dueled in a pamphlet war. Like many, Kingsley saw Hypatia as representing that hinge in history when the classical world died and the Church rose to usher in the "dark ages." Yet he wants to affirm the rightness of the victory of Christianity -- his Protestant version. This novel is essential reading for those interested in the intellectual and religious ferment of the Victorian age.

Heroism had nothing to do with the main characters as their greatest talent was an ability to sacrifice themselves
By Teresa Hermiz
The story holds interest but it is a very silly interpretation, one that only a christian would make of those turbulent times. Heroism had nothing to do with the main characters as their greatest talent was an ability to sacrifice themselves. Such were the leaders of the the times.

Absorbing View of the Vietnam Era
By Future Boy
My favourite part of the book, by far, is watching Pamela transition from sweet, all-American girl into a hardened Vietnam War protestor. The details of how the protests escalated were riveting. This is the second third of the book. I was hoping though for at least one scene where Pamela meets Roger when he comes home from the war and she hugs him, and they talk about what happened to their relationship. But, perhaps it is not realistic to expect so. When people do decide to move on because of fundamental changes in their feelings about someone, they are usually brutal about it.

The first one-third and the last one-third of the book were interesting but didn't grab me the way the middle part of the book did. In the first part, Robert and Pamela envision a future together. It was sweet and if it weren't for the knowledge that Robert was heading off to war, I would have wondered where the "happy" part of the book was going. With the horrific spectacle of the Vietnam war coming up as part of the suspense, I agree the first one-third was necessary.

The last one-third was a little puzzling as it is not the usual climax that one expects at the end of a story like this. This is how Roger copes with his post-traumatic stress disorder. Certainly with no experience in war I could never even begin to imagine the terror of what Roger went through. So I agree this part is necessary, to show that war doesn't end when one goes home from the war.

Very thought-provoking book. It is very unique and doesn't fall into either the rah-rah war God Bless us Americans camp nor the "President Johnson / Nixon is a crook" and "all war is evil" camp. Although it definitely leans toward the "war is evil" camp, the Vietnam War itself deserved that label - an useless war that destroyed thousands of lives. It makes you wonder and shake your head at how all this ever happened.

Vivid and engrossing
By Amazon Customer
Coming of age in the 1960s, I could easily relate to this realistic tale of a college kid turned soldier during the Vietnam War (Note: Technically it wasn't a war; in every other way, it certainly was). The aftermath of the war was--and continues to be--horrific. We, as a society, have been too willing to sweep those experiences under the carpet and it takes a brave author like Fantina to remind us of the atrocities our young men and women caused and suffered.
Roger Gaines, a promising young college student, is drafted into the army and sent to Vietnam. Wanting to do his duty to his country, he follows orders for as long as he can. After he is honorably discharged, he finds his way home, not knowing how to put the shattered pieces of his life back in order. Pam Wentworth, his high school sweetheart, begins to study the Vietnam War as a way to understand what her fiance was going through. Caught up in the events of Chicago in 1968, her protests to the war turn violent and reach a point of no return.
There is much of Fantina's work that is a cliché--high school sweethearts driven apart by war, each caught up in forces beyond their control. But Fantina's strength is his gripping and horrifying glimpse of war from the perspective of a naïve and ordinary young man of the time and the long road of recovery he faced. That part of it was so good I had to read it twice.
Fantina's treatment of Pam was not as good, but it's a rare male author who can write believable female characters (and vice versa). That didn't stop me from imagining her very clearly, however.
I recommend this book to everyone--both those who were alive during the Vietnam War (it's guaranteed to bring back memories) and those who weren't and want to know what it was like. Many comparisons have been written about our current wars and that in Vietnam, but this one shows how utterly different they can be, but how much the same the aftermath is.

Great book
By a fan
Having grown up while the Vietnam War was raging, I was intrigued when I heard about this book. I wasn't disappointed! I found myself really caring about the characters as if they were real people. I sometimes laughed with them, but more often cried with them and for them. The book is very well-written, and while reading it, it was almost as if I were back in the 60's and early 70's. If you are looking for an excellent story to escape into, I highly recommend `Look Not Unto the Morrow.'

There are so many guides on here that I didn’t know what to get so I just got some cheap ones. This one is the best and was only a few quid. I felt like I was half reading a guide and half reading a story and it wasn’t boring. Only downside is the guide prices are in dollars but it still gives you a good idea of how much stuff costs (crazy cheap). Plus I emailed the Vietnam lady and she was really helpful – wasn’t expecting a response really so that takes it from a 4* to a 5*

The Complete Poetic and Dramatic Works of Robert Browning (Illustrated), by Robert Browning

The history of the earliest printed of Browning's writings is so curious that it seems worth while to give it at greater length than its intrinsic merit would require. As a boy Browning wrote an inordinate amount of verse, imitative largely of Byron, and some of it written when he was twelve struck his father as good enough to deserve printing, but no publisher could be found ready to confirm this faith. Then Browning fell into a Shelleyan mood, and when he was twenty projected a great work of which the introduction only was written. This introduction was Pauline, which to be precise was completed October 22, 1832. Browning's aunt volunteered to pay the expenses of publication, and it was published anonymously early in 1833 by Saunders & Otley. The most authoritative person on literary matters in the young poet's circle of friends was the Rev. William Johnson Fox, a Unitarian clergyman and editor of the Monthly Repository. He had a few years before given emphatic commendation to the boy's verse, and now reviewed the poem with great warmth in his own magazine, so winning the poet's gratitude as to draw from him the extravagant expression: "I shall never write a line without thinking of the source of my first praise, be assured." The poem missed what would have been from its writer a more notable review. Mr. John Stuart Mill, six years Browning's senior, was so delighted with Pauline that he wrote to the editor of Tait's Magazine, the only periodical in which he could write freely, asking leave to review the poem. The editor replied that he had just printed a curt, contemptuous notice, and could not at once take the other track. When Mill died his copy of Pauline, crowded with annotations, fell into Browning's hands and may now be seen in the South Kensington Museum.

The complete poetic and dramatic works of Robert Browning
By Anita M. H. S.
I purchased this as a gift for my son who writes poetry, songs, and is a musician. I also had bought Robert's wife's poetry book for my son's wife. It was a fanciful Christmas.

Josephine's Journey, by June Mac Leod

The year is 1851, and a young man travels the frontier trails searching for his family. Look closely, however, and you might realize this young man is actually twenty-one-year-old Josephine “Jo” Brown, daughter of a Pennsylvanian minister.

Jo longs to be a minister like her father, but by the societal rules of the day, she’s “just a woman.” Even so, when her family disappears on the Western frontier, Jo sets out to find them.

Dressing as a man offers Jo safe passage, and her bearing and attitude mirror her strong Christian beliefs—so much so that when she reaches her destination, the townsfolk offer her a ministry position in their small church.

In dire need of money, Jo accepts the position, hoping it’s part of God’s plan. As she continues her search, it becomes apparent that an avaricious land baron has something to do with her family’s disappearance. Jo’s also strongly attracted to the local sheriff, but can’t make her feelings known—at least not while she’s wearing a minister’s suit.

Josephine’s Journey introduces readers to Jo, a self-reliant, determined woman with an unshakable belief in God’s ability to help her overcome the impossible.

Well written! Kept my interest as Josephine traveled west from Pennsylvania alone in the mid-1800's. It illustrated how a young woman could face many challenges as long as she realized that she must trust God's wisdom and care in every situation. I'm looking forward to June Mac Leod's next book.

A Bend in the Straight and Narrow: A Woman's Journey into the Heart of the Florida Frontier, by Sarah Younger

The bravest fighters are often not soldiers. Based on a true story of Civil War era passion and sacrifice, this novel follows the life of Sally Ann Marsh. Born to a poor, but close-knit family, Sally is married off in 1859, at the age of 15, to a wealthy man twice her age. She is distraught, but determined to make the best of her life. She falls in love with her husband and they create a blissful home together with their growing family. Their lives are upended when Sherman marches through Georgia. Sally is forced to evacuate and leads a small group of women, children and her elderly father-in-law to the Florida frontier.

As their men are off fighting, the refugees rebuild their lives amidst the sweltering heat, mosquitoes and gnats, alligators and poisonous snakes. But it is the two-legged varmints who threaten the most harm. Sally manages to establish a community for her friends and family, while they wait for the men, some of whom might never return.

About the Author
Sarah A. Younger is a native Floridian whose ancestors settled Florida in the post-Civil War period, with some branches on the family tree traced to the 1820's. The stories Sarah has passed on in the novel, "A Bend in the Straight and Narrow," were told to her by her grandmother, Granny O'Steen. Since the stories were a mere skeleton, she filled in the gaps with historical fiction. Not only did the inspiration come from family narratives, but after studying the picture of the real Sarah, the author thought that as a young girl, she could not have looked that stern. From that reflection flowed the story like water over a broken dam. Much of the research done for this project was accomplished by visiting graveyards in the Bradford and Alachua County areas. The search for Jacob Henry's and Sarah's graves is ongoing. Many of the markers revealed things not known previously in family history, such as an epidemic that killed three people in the family, including her grandfather's mother, one week after he was born. The last names in the book have been changed, but many of the given names remain the same. Sarah has a BA degree from Baylor University and an Education degree from the University of Southern Colorado. She has an avid interest in history and quilting. She lives in Merritt Island, FL with her husband.

I absolutely enjoyed this book
By Nicole
I absolutely enjoyed this book! I couldn't put it down and read it in 2 days. As a native to Florida, I always enjoy reading books about how our state was settled and the trials and tribulations pioneers had to endure to call this place home. The book contains stories, within stories, and it's nice to see how the characters "grow" with you as the years go by. I would definitely recommended this book to anyone and I hope the author will publish another book similar to this.

Nicely done! I didn’t put it down until I’d read the entire book. Sally is a beautiful character with a story that will resonate with all women. Her most endearing quality is that she keeps a positive spirit in spite of the hardships she faced in life. This book has a flavor of Patrick Smith’s, A Land Remembered, with a female’s point of view. Kudos to you, Susan Younger, I can’t wait to read the next one. Happy to be first to leave a review.

The Airshipmen: A Novel Based on a True Story. A Tale of Love, Betrayal & Political Intrigue., by David Dennington

A riveting love story that plays out against the background of one of the most intriguing chapters in aviation history. David Dennington weaves a fascinating web of romance, courage, tragedy and shattered dreams and gives the reader a front row seat to eye-opening, high-stakes political battles on two continents. A real page turner with the constant feeling that something new and unexpected is about to unfold.- David Wright, former journalist with the Daily Mirror.                                                                                       *Amazon MatchBook offer:  Buy the Kindle version for $1.99 when you purchase the paperback. Available in U.S. only.

After WW1, Lou Remington leaves the Marine Corps and joins the Navy to fly airships. He is sent to England to train with his crew to fly R38 back to New Jersey. After a terrible accident, he falls in love and settles down to a blissful life in rural Yorkshire. But the British come knocking at his door with offers for him to assist in building the safest and mightiest airships the world has ever seen. Accepting the position could lead to a spectacular career with infinite rewards--or maybe cost him his life.

The British Airship Program is a morass of infighting and political intrigue. Two teams are pitted against each other, each to design and build their own massive airship, modeled as ocean liners of the sky--one will fly to Canada, the other to India. By design, only one team will survive this deadly competition. As an outsider and seconded liaison officer between the two teams, Lou Remingtons mission is simple: Keep the peace between the warring parties and help prevent another national tragedy. But it is the misguided passions of the charismatic Lord Thomson, which have more to do with a certain Romanian princess than with aviation, which threaten Lou's goals and forever change the lives of all involved, foreshadowing the demise of the British Empire.

Praise for The Airshipmen

This is a big story, layered and cinematic--one that I did not want to end. I could not imagine myself reading a book about airships, but it's much more than that--it's about blinding love, vaulting ambition, loyalty, greed, deception and the whole gamut of human frailty. Its about a wonderful group of people that I came to love--full of secrets and surprises. I could not put this book down.- Edith Schorah, Editor, Palm Beach Co., FL.

Hats off! A gripping story masterfully told, the book reverberates in the readers mind long after it is over. The characters are believable and involving, complicated, rich and conflicted. The chronicle renders these historical characters in flesh and blood, their saga replete with concrete and exquisite details. This is a wonderful book--humane and filled with the love of the men for their wives and families, while at the same time, highly attuned to the highest levels of power and the effect that the decisions made at those echelons influence, not only the course of human events on the grand scale, but the very humble small-scale lives of the men caught in the crossfire. It illuminates a fascinating period of recent history almost lost from view and it does justice to the complexities of the personalities of the people involved.- Steven Bauer, former Director of Creative Writing, Miami University, Oxford OH.

Review
An impressively crafted multilayered novel, The Airshipmen is a fully absorbing read from beginning to end and clearly showcases author David Dennington as a gifted storyteller of the first order. A solidly entertaining novel, The Airshipmen is very highly recommended for community library General Fiction collections.MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW

The Airshipmen is a very human story ... historical fiction based primarily in Britain in the 1920s and follows the sweeping passions and adventures of the airship industry... with main characters, Lou and Charlotte, both beautifully flawed characters. Lou is haunted by his experiences in WWI, as well as the R38 disaster, but his love for airships keeps drawing him into a high-risk career path.  Charlotte had witnessed the R38 disaster firsthand. She doesn't trust airships and longs for Lou to walk away from them ... an incredibly interesting fictionalized take on an important and experimental time in air travel history ... recommended for fans of history, air travel, and historical fiction with just a touch of fantasy.PORTLAND BOOK REVIEW

An epic read ... a sure feast for those interested in ... pre-World War II aviation history.HISTORICAL NOVEL SOCIETY, UK.

A very big novel in every way, unique, beautifully written and perfectly paced ... setting the scene so well ... the first of a true new genre ... weaving us around the events of the great Airship R101 tragedy, the people and places we know well ... with wonderfully rich characters ... researched in immaculate detail.ALASTAIR LAWSON, VICE CHAIRMAN, AIRSHIP HERITAGE TRUST, CARDINGTON, BEDFORDSHIRE, UK.

From the Author
The winter of 1941 was harsh. David Dennington's father, remaining in London to fight the fires ignited by Hitler's bombs, sent his mother to the safety of the Durham countryside to give birth.  A city girl to the core, she returned to South London with her bundle of joy within months.  Seventeen years later, Dennington enrolled at the Brixton School of Building, where he spent six years studying construction management, while also working on various building projects around London.  On completion of his studies and passing his exams, he was accepted as a member of the Chartered Institute of Building. In 1966, he jumped at the opportunity to escape the bleak English winters to work on a swanky hotel in Nassau. Four weeks before his departure, he bought a pint of bitter for a bewitching Yorkshire lass, who happened to be holidaying in Bournemouth. During their brief courtship, they met each other's families and promised to write. Ten months later, Dennington returned, requested her hand and whisked her off to paradise. Forty-nine years later, they are still together and blessed with two wonderful children.
Life was spent between England, The Bahamas, Bermuda, and the US. Hobbies included flying, sailing, horses, and cooking. Work was fulfilling in many ways; it even provided for an element of creativity. He had always wanted to write. So, at the ripe old age of 55, he began.
Dennington studied and attended workshops on fiction and screenplay writing and created two screenplays. He carried out many years of research on the subject of the British airship program (which had fascinated him since reading Nevil Shute's Slide Rule as a teenager) through books and on-site visits in the UK and U.S.A.  In the end, he had enough material to write two novels. This is the first. He had thought of changing all the names of real people in the story, but in the end, decided he wanted to honor the real characters--each heroic in his, or her, own way in the struggle called 'life'.

Filling a Gap in History
By Kathryn Johnson
The period between WWI and WWII was rich with civilian and military innovations. Aviation in all of its forms was no exception. Until now I've read very little about the airships that were being developed and used with increasing frequency until terrible disasters, including the infamous Hindenburg's explosion, put an end to these magnificent dirigibles and zeppelins, as a practical means of transportation. Dennington has done a masterful job of pulling me back into those times--with all the glamour, danger, and suspense of flying in these gigantic whales of the skies. A fun read, good historical detail.

A highly detailed work of fiction based on a factual historical happening ...
By Curtis Chambers
Back in the last century, between the years between the two big wars, there was a large contingent of knowledgeable people who believed that airships would become the new modern way for general world travel. The belief was that they would take over from ocean liners as the way for people to more quickly circle the world. It was a time when airplanes were not yet seen as having the ability to cross oceans in comfort and safety. And so, in the mid twenties, with a labor government in power in England, it was decided to start a government sponsored airship development program. In a burst of bravado the labor politicians proposed a program of competition between a government designed and developed airship and one done by private enterprise. This program went forward as an actual historical happening; the novel, The Airshipmen, is a fictional account of this program with fictional characters intertwined with the actual historical players. It is largely told through the eyes of the fictional young American naval officer who, assisted and enabled by his beautiful English wife, is commissioned to view and assist both parties, with the concept that his knowledge would be valuable if the States should then want to start their own airship program. The story is incredibly detailed, and threads its way back and forth among the players, scenes, and events that inevitability happen in a program of this size and magnitude. The design and development of the airships take literally years and happen simultaneously but at separated locations in England. Because it is a competition the two sides feel compelled not to share any concepts or ideas with each other, and a deep jealousy evolves to the point that intense personal dislikes develop between the players of both sides. It literally takes several years of the design and development of each airship, but oddly enough they finish up at nearly the same time, although one side becomes coerced to rush their finish. The ensuing competitive testing of the two airships is the exciting climax of the story, and the resulting action dictates not only success and failure, but to a large extent the direction of western politics of the time. This is definitely a story that will interest not only buffs of aviation history but also those who are fascinated with political philosophies.

One of a kind - a MUST read!!!
By Cheryl R.
An amazing debut novel! I just finished this cleverly-written, well-researched book and really enjoyed the read. I was surprised, as it’s not the type of book I would normally choose—but it has opened me up to more of the same—if I can find one! I so enjoyed getting to know all the characters, such a wonderful mix of the difference classes—from the politicians to the manual workforce—their backgrounds, friendships, love stories, the intrigues surrounding the political players, the rivalry between the two teams (R100 vs R101). I loved the scenes at Chequers with Thomson and the Prime Minister—their close friendship; how the mysterious princess is portrayed; how the villain was dealt with; how Barnes Wallace's life was bound up with the airships—and we all knew what he went on to achieve! I also enjoyed the unexpected tale of the American family, almost a book within a book. And such richness of information regarding the era! I got so involved with the plot and the intrigues surrounding all the characters. It was never boring for a second, as the plots were continually changing and the unexpected happening. It had a wonderful love story...how you thought it was headed... and then the final twist. I was sorry it ended, but it left me in a good place—which is what I like in a book.

Intriguing Story
By Tv
I must say I'm surprised this book has not received reviews yet. That in itself caused me to read it. I enjoy historical novels, and although you can expect a more formal form of English and writing it usually enhances the story line.

In this case, I'm giving this a 4 star rating and not 5. The English is so over-the-top formal and written in such an old fashioned style that I actually had to re-read some portions over again to get what the author was saying. Also, the over abundance of big and long lost words caused me to stop repeatedly to look up words. Thank God that Kindle has a built in dictionary that made this task easy. I think if I were reading this in paper format I would have given up.

The story in itself is quite enjoyable and the characters are pretty well developed. The ending seemed a little abrupt, but not overly so. All in all I give this a thumbs up for a historical novel. It is not a romance novel, so if you are looking for romance look elsewhere. This story follows a young prince who is comfortably imprisioned by 3 archbishops who wish to use him as a pawn when his drunken father, the emperor, dies. The prince manipulates his freedom using a double to stand in for him in prison and makes a life for himself in the world as a swordmaker and fencing teacher. He pulls a band of men together to help right the wrongs of the starving people (due to the mismanagement of the greedy nobels and archbishops.) The story follows his quest with its trials and tribulations and successes. The rest I'll leave for you to read.

Engaging historical fiction
By kbulgrien
A well written book, and the best part is that it was free. I probably would not have read it otherwise. there is great character development with sub-stories that make it really engaging and that help one get a picture of the past and what could befall a poor soul that got on the wrong side of a politician that had the power to arrange a press into military service. The back story about one of the main characters is just as good as the story about Petersborough.

The Petersborough story is good. This is not someone that made mainstream history, but it shows you how imperfect people with less than the best interpersonal skills can surprise you with the depth of their commitment to getting things done even when such can come at very high cost.

I do not normally read historical fiction (who knows), but when my wife got a Kindle, it caught my eye. This book started my own interest in getting a Kindle for myself. Though I ended up getting an Android tablet with a Kindle app on it instead, the point is that this book is what helped me think about getting back into reading. I used to be a voracious reader, but college and career kind of put an end to that. This book was engaging enough to help me consider how I might get back into reading again.

An alternative look at popular History
By Robert
"The Bravest of the Brave" by G.A. Henty details the war between Spain and France, and the British and her allies during the early 1700s, over two contending claimants for the throne of Spain.

The story, through the main character, follows the Earl of Peterborough in his campaign in Spain. History has muddled this man, and whether he was incompetent and disloyal or a masterful general and merely maligned by those jealous of him, we may never know. The popular theory passed down to us is that through his incompetence King Charles lost his bid for the Spanish crown. However, this book portrays the opposite view, and is backed by several historians. Either way, Earl Charles Mordaunt the third of Peterborough, was an amazing, if not eccentric man. His exploits and genius are, I think, too often over-shadowed by his flaws of character.

This book details the life and methods of the early 1700 century in a way that remains interesting yet teaches a great deal of history. Very interesting and fun to read with short character stories to keep it entertaining. I highly recommend this book.

Enjoy.

About the Author
In the beginning of his career, Henry Fielding wrote for the theatre. He was critical of Walpole's government in his plays, and his satire led directly to the Licensing Act of 1737. He was also a Justice of the Peace and only began writing novels to satirize the works of Samuel Richardson, but today he is best known for his novels, especially Tom Jones (1749), which is considered one of the greatest comic novels ever written in the English language.

What a wolf is in a sheepfold, a great man is in society
By Luc REYNAERT
For Henry Fielding, 'great men', like Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar, and 'great rogues', like Jonathan Wild, are synonymous terms. Greatness consists in bringing all manners of mischief on mankind.

Alexander the Great overran a whole empire with fire and sword, pillaging, sacking, burning, enslaving and destroying millions of his fellow creatures. Julius Caesar abolished the republican liberties of his country in order to take the power into his own hands.

At the opposite side of the spectrum, Jonathan Wild was a great prig (pick-pocket), cheating the very tools who were his instruments to cheat others: 'I had rather stand at the summit of a dunghill, than at the bottom of a hill in paradise.'

For Henry Fielding, greatness rimes with ambition, lust, avarice, rapaciousness, hypocrisy, power, pride, insolence, insatiability, 'a privilege to kill, a strong temptation to do bravely ill'. Greatness is 'playing with the passions of men, to work one's own purposes out of the jealousies and apprehensions to create those great arts which the vulgar call treachery, dissembling, promising, lying, falshood, summed up in the collective name of POLLITRICKS.'

And all that for what? Not for the general good of society, but for the power and the glory of the great man himself, for the satisfaction of his vices.

The fact that 'he is hated and detested by all mankind makes him inwardly satisfied. Otherwise, why should he stand at the head of a multitude of prigs, called an army, in order to molest his neighbours, to introduce rape, rapine, bloodshed and every kind of misery on his own species, to desire maliciously to rob those subjects, to reduce them to an absolute dependence on his own will, to betray the interest of his fellow-subjects, of his brethren.'

Jonathan Wild: 'I ought rather weep with Alexander, that I have ruined not more.'

Another target of the author are the hypocritical priests: 'Life is sweet, I had rather live to eternity ... so many wallow in wealth and preferment.'

He insults the ordinary, who attends to the spiritual needs of condemned criminals; 'You are more unmerciful to me than the Judge.'

Henry Fielding's forceful diatribe against all conquerers, tyrants, pollitrickers, and vicious 'prigs' still sounds extremely modern.

He blames the majority of mankind to continue to praise the said great men.

But, 'there are still some, who view these great men with a malignant eye and dare affirm that these great men are always the most pernicious and generally the most wretched and truly contemptible of all works of creation.'

This book is a ferocious and, unfortunately, still very topical satire.

A must read.

Mediocre
By Katie Prestwich
This book was just okay. It is written completely tongue in cheek like the other Fielding books I've read, but wasn't quite as amusing. The characters were not particularly well developed, and the story lacked substance. The Heartfree's story was pretty good, but was Mrs. Heartfree really so amazing that every man who ever saw her fell madly in love with her? After about the fifth one it got a little tiresome.

I received a message that my two orders for today, July 27, had been downloaded onto my Kindle, but they have not.
I usually receive them immediately - but it's been too long, and I fear they have not been loaded for my Kindle. I've had no problems downloading books this week, but then a box popped up about whether I use Windows 8. I do, but that has not stopped the orders from being received until today - and my WiFI is working just fine. Please do send these books to my Ki8ndle. The other one was Amelia - in one volume.
