From Publishers Weekly
Morris's (Galveston eyes are again on Texasthis time, to observe the rise of Houston and two of its founding families. Narrated by four women whose histories span the past 100 years, the novel offers a summary view of King Cotton deposed by oil barons and a more intimate one of cotton-headed maidens triumphing over a host of smarmy men. Alvereda's father keeps her at home just to reject her. Though she marries kindly Neal Gerrard, she must fight off the sexual advances of his business partner, David Leider. Leider has locked himself into a loveless marriage, an act which is to become a family tradition. His daughter Elzyna thinks her husband is trying to kill her, while her daughter, Senta, has one who almost succeeds. Only Robin manages to break the mold by marrying a Gerrard of the '60s who, unlike his relatives, is not into knives or poison. The characters here seem to speak with a single voice, shorn of local color, which uses such slang as "swell" or "phony" in both 1887 and 1960a voice whose lack of fiber eventually flattens the events it describes.

From Library Journal
This is a four-generational story of two Houston families. It is narrated by four women, beginning in 1879 with Alvareda, who tells of her escape from a brutal father to a long, happy marriage with Neal Garrard. Garrard's business partnership with David Leider, a former neighbor of Alvareda, begins the web of greed, lust, and envy that snares both families for nearly a century. An all-pervading pessimism becomes more intense as the novel progresses, and the negative characters outnumber and overshadow the positive. Brutal husbands and manipulating wives and daughters lend tension to the plot, but when a husband and wife plan to kill each other and a cousin kills one family member, wounds another, and sexually molests a young niece, the reader's credulity is strained. This is a wonderful book! Each chapter focuses on a different character and each time I'd finish a chapter I'd think that I didn't want to read about the next person, but it just got better and better. This is a long book, but I couldn't put it down and read it in two days.

On ships shaped like dragons, bristling with oars and armor, Jarl Sigurd and his fierce Norsemen have come in search of riches. And riches they are promised, by an English ruler who sends Sigurd and his wolves to steal a holy manuscript from another kingdom.

Osric, an orphan boy, sees beyond the terror of these warriors, and somehow knows the heathens’ tongue. Renamed Raven, rechristened in blood, he will join them. They are his people. And they will be his fate.

Chapter One

It was April. The lean days of fasting and the long months of winter had been forgotten with the full bellies of the Easter feast. The people were busy with the outdoor tasks that the icy winds had kept them from: straightening loose thatch, replacing rotten fences, replenishing wood stores, and stirring new life into the rich soil of the plow fields. Wild garlic smothered the earth in the shady woods like a white pelt, its scent whipped up by the breeze, and blue spring squill sat like a low mist upon the grassy slopes and headlands, stirred by the salty sea air.

Usually I was woken by Ealhstan’s mutterings and one of his bony fingers digging into my ribs, but on this day I rose before the old man, hoping to be away catching a fish for our breakfast before having to suffer his ill temper. I even imagined he might be pleased with me for being at the task before the sun reddened the eastern horizon, though it was more likely he would begrudge my being awake before him. Fishing rod in hand and wrapped in a threadbare cloak, I stepped out into the predawn stillness and shivered with a yawn that brought water to my eyes.

“The old goat got you working by the light of the stars now, has he?” came a low voice, and I turned to make out Griffin the warrior leading his great gray hunting dog by a rope that was knotted so that the animal choked itself as it fought him. “Keep still, boy!” Griffin growled, yanking the rope viciously. The beast was coughing, and I thought Griffin might break its neck if it did not stop pulling.

“You know Ealhstan,” I said, holding back my hair and leaning over the rain barrel. “He can’t take a piss before he’s had his breakfast.” I thrust my face into the dark, cold water and held it there, then came up and shook my head, wiping my eyes on the back of my arm.

Griffin looked down at the dog, which was beaten at last and stood with its head slumped low between its shoulders, looking up at its master pathetically. “Found the dumb bastard sniffing around Siward’s place just now. He ran off yesterday. First time I’ve laid eyes on him since.”

“Siward’s got a bitch in heat,” I said, tying back my hair.

“So the wife tells me,” Griffin said, a smile touching his mouth. “Can’t blame him, I suppose. We all want a bit of what’s good for us, hey, boy?” he added, rubbing the dog’s head roughly. I liked Griffin. He was a hard man but had no hatred in him like the others. Or perhaps it was fear he lacked.

“Some things in life are certain, Griffin,” I said, returning his smile. “Dogs will chase bitches, and Ealhstan will eat mackerel every morning till his old teeth fall out.”

“Well, you’d better dip that line, lad,” he warned, nodding southward toward the sea. “Even Arsebiter here has less bite than old Ealhstan. I wouldn’t get on the wrong side of that tongueless bastard for every mackerel the Lord Jesus and His disciples pulled out of the Red Sea.”

I looked back to the house. “Ealhstan doesn’t have a right side,” I said in a low voice. Griffin grinned, bending to rub Arsebiter’s muzzle. “I’ll bring you a codfish one of these days, Griffin. Long as your arm,” I said, shivering again, and then we parted ways, he toward his house and me toward the low sound of the sea.

A pinkish glow lay across the eastern horizon, but the sun was still concealed and it was dark as I climbed the hill that shielded Abbotsend from the worst of the weather blowing in from the gray sea. But I had walked the path many times and had no need of a flame. Besides, the old crumbling watchtower stood visible at the hilltop as a black shape against a dark purple sky. Folk said it was built by the Romans, that long-disappeared race. I did not know if that was true, but I whispered thanks to them anyway, for with the tower in sight I could not lose my way.

My mind wandered, though, as I considered taking a skiff beyond the sea-battered rocks the next morning to try to catch something other than mackerel. You could pull in a great codfish if you could get your hook to the seabed. Suddenly, a metallic tock stopped me dead and something whipped my eyes, for an instant blinding me. I dropped to one knee, feeling the hairs spring up on the back of my neck. A guttural croak broke the stillness, and I saw a black shape swoop up, then plunge, settling on the tower’s crumbling crown. It croaked again, and even in the weak dawn light its wings glinted with a purple sheen as its stout beak stabbed at its feathers. I had seen similar birds many times—clouds of crows that swept down to the fields to dig for seeds or worms—but this was a huge raven, and the sight of it was enough to freeze my blood.

“Away with you, bird,” I said, picking up a small piece of red brick and throwing it at the creature. I missed, but it was enough to send the raven flapping noisily into the sky, a black smear against the lightening heavens. “So you’re scared of birds now, Osric?” I muttered, shaking my head as I crested the hill and made my way through stalks of pink thrift and cushioning sea campion down to the shore. A damp mist had been thrown up to blanket the dunes and shingle, and a flock of screeching gulls passed overhead, tumbling down into the murk, leaving behind them a wake of noise. I jumped across three rock pools full of green weed, the small bladders floating at the surface, then onto my fishing rock, where I knocked a limpet into the sea with the butt of my rod before unwinding the line.

After the time it takes to put a keen edge on a knife, nothing had taken the hook, and I thought about trying another spot where I had once pulled in a rough-skinned fish as long as my leg with wicked, sharp teeth. It was then that I caught a strange sound amid the rhythmic breathing of the surf. I wedged the rod in a crevice, the line still in the sea, and scrambled higher up the rocks above the shingle. But I saw nothing other than the sea-stirred vapor, which seemed alive, like some strange beast writhing before me, concealing and revealing the ocean time and again. I heard only the shrieks of white gulls and the breaking waves and was about to jump down when I heard the strange sound again.

This time I froze like an icicle. My muscles gripped my bones rigid. The breath caught fast in my chest, and cold fear crept up my spine, prickling my scalp. The thin hollow note of a horn sounded again, and then came the rhythmic slap of oars. As if conjured from the spirit world, a dragon emerged, a wooden beast with a belly of clinkered strakes that flowed up into its slender neck. The monster’s head was set with faded red eyes, and I wanted to run but was stuck to the rock like the limpets, fixed by the stare of a great bearded warrior who stood with one arm around the monster’s neck. His beard parted, revealing a malicious smile, then the boat’s keel scraped up the shingle with a noise like thunder, and men were jumping from the ship, sliding on the wet rocks and falling and splashing into the surf. Guttural voices echoed off the rocks behind me, and my bowels melted. Another dragon ship must have beached farther down the shore beyond Hermit’s Rock. Men with swords and axes and round painted shields stepped from the mist, their war gear clinking noisily to shatter the unnatural stillness. They gathered around me like wolves, pointing east and west, their hard voices rousing shrieks from gulls overhead. I mumbled a prayer to Christ and His saints that my death would be quick as the warrior from the ship’s prow stepped up and grabbed my throat. He shoved me at another heathen, who gripped my shoulder with a powerful hand. This one wore a green cloak fastened with a silver brooch in the shape of a wolf’s head. I saw the iron rings of a mail shirt, a brynja, beneath the cloak, and I retched.

Now, after all these years, I might essay a few untruths. I doubt any still live who could prove my words false. I could say that I stuck out my chest and took a grip on my fear. That I did not piss myself. But who would believe me? These outlanders leaping from their dragons were armed and fierce. They were warriors and grown men. And I was just a boy. A strange and frightening magic fell across me then. The outlanders’ sharp language began to change, seemed to melt, the percussive clipped grunts becoming a stream of sounds that were somehow familiar. I swallowed some of the fear, my tongue beginning to move over those noises like water over pebbles, awakening to them, and I heard myself repeating them until they became no longer just noises but words. And I understood them.

“But look at his eye, Uncle!” the man with the wolf brooch said. “He is marked. Ódin god of war has given him a clot of blood for an eye. On my oath, I feel the All-Father breathing down my neck.”

“I agree with Sigurd,” another said, his eyes slits of suspicion. “The way he appeared in the mist was not natural. You all saw it. The vapor became flesh! Any normal man would have run from her.” He pointed to the ship with its carved dragon’s head. “But this one stood here as if he was . . . as if he was waiting for us. I want no part in his death, Sigurd,” he finished, shaking his head.

I prayed they would not see the fishing rod in the crack in the rock, and I hoped the mackerel were still asleep, for mackerel fight like devils and if one took my hook, the line would jump and the heathens would see me for what I was.

“I can help you,” I spluttered, buoyed suddenly by the hope that the outlanders were lost, blown off course on the way to who knew where.

"The Norns of Fate are weaving still, and I was a Norseman now"
By Ronin
I ordered this book from amazon.uk because I did not see it available at the time. Looks like it is available in the US now, which is great.

I found the 1st 50-pages torturous, as I slogged through a young writer's plodding character development. Once our main man takes to a long ship, the story picks up and I slew the book in 2-days. The story takes place around 790 AD, which is largely considered the start of the Viking Age, though it likely began considerably sooner. It begins with an outcast, our main man, in a small English coastal dung-hole of a village who does not remember his childhood. I'm not sure but it could be loosely based on the early Viking raid on the monestary at Lindisfarne.

Raven has to pay his dues before he is accepted into an elite band of raiders. Eventually the teach him their fighting arts and he discovers a natural talent for war as he adventures across Wessex and Mercia. At times the story gave me deja vu, like I was back with Bernard Cornwell's Uhtred. Then there is the ship "Fjord Elk"; great name for a ship but it transported me straight back to Robert Low's "The Whale Road".

One nice thing I can say is, while some of the sentence structure could use some work, the book is well edited. One small grievance with these English writers, you need to join with the rest of the world and differentiate between "corn", an New World food, and wheat, what you are actually referring to. Its kind of like stubbornly insisting on driving on the wrong side of the road, which the rest of the world has rejected.

The book is filled with graphic violence, and profanity that was often so colorful I had to wonder as to the historical realism. Once the adventure got going it kept my attention and on balance I thought this was an excellent first novel filled with lots of good characters. I plan to start book II tonight. Enjoy.

Not good enough
By Sven
Being a Norwegian who reads allot of historical fiction I decided to read this book. I'm sorry to say I was disappointed.

Many compare this book to Bernard Cornwells books, but where Cornwell is a brilliant writer and storyteller who portrays vivid characters with depth, Kristians characters are mostly extraordinarily one-dimensional.

The Vikings laugh, kill and drink. They are all supreme fighters and they keep mentioning the gods at every possible opportunity. Then they laugh some more, kill some more and drink some more, before they yet again show of their supreme fighting skill, deftly followed with a mention of the gods. Further on in the story they do it all again, and again, and again.....repeat sequence seven times or so, and you will essentially have read the story. Skirmish heaped on drinking heaped on skirmish heaped on boring plot heaped on skirmish heaped on drinking. In an effort to try to compare it with something equally monumentally boring and repetitive, the first thing that comes to mind is the TV-show "The Pacific", whose characters possibly outfight Kristians characters in terms of lack of depth and personality.

Bernard Cornwell has given us characters like Uther of Bebbanburg, Lord Derfel Cadarn and Nicolas Hook. Persons with doubts, fears, love and hate. On top of this Cornwell dives rather more into the politics, ideas and bigger picture of the time. All this he succeeds in mixing beautifully into exciting books. Kristian has mostly succeeded in portraying a bunch of staggering alcoholics and sociopaths(come to think of it, it's possibly an even bigger feat not to manage to get something entertaining out of that mix) to the degree that I must wonder how much Mr. Cornwell actually was paid to recommend this book.

However, I can not speak for the last 30 pages or so, because by that time I simply was not interested in reading the end. To put down a book before I have read it to end has only happened two times before in my life, and I have read allot of books. That sums it up for me, you do the rest of the math.

Disappointed
By TarHeelFan
I read a great deal of historical fiction and was disappointed that Bernard Cornwell, one of my favorite authors, gave it a glowing cover quote. I have heard that authors don't actually read books when they offer a quote and that seems to be the case. Although I applaud writers for taking on the Viking era and any historical combat novel, this one was tough a tough slog. I ordered it to the US from the UK and was excited to start it so am doubly disappointed after paying so much for shipping.

The writing is choppy and on multiple occasions I had to reread sections to track the author's point, which more often than not, was not worth the effort. The characters were weak and the book lacks the pacing and tight plotting that makes Cornwell and Iggulden so incredible.

I hope this author keeps trying but this was not the work of a pro. I am dropping it before finishing and will give the new one by Steven Pressfield a try.

Ronald Leslie's story: a story of bravery
By A Customer
As Henty points out in his preface it is perhaps better that Prince Charles' attempt to win back his father's throne failed. For if the end of the battle had been different at Culloden it "might have been followed in time by another revolution, another expulsion of the Stuarts..." The hero in this story is Ronald Leslie, who as a young child is smuggled out of France, and from out of the clutches of the king of France. For Ronald's father, a young soldier, had married the daughter of Marquis de Recambours. The Marquis is a noble who objected strongly to his daughter's association with a common soldier, and in fact was not even told of what had taken place. When the Marquis learned what his daughter had done, she was shut up in a convent and Colonel Leslie was put in a dungeon. Ronald grows up in the household of Andrew and Janet Anderson, whose brother had escaped with Ronald out of France. Suspicions are aroused against Ronald when he warns a Jacobite leader of the police who are coming to get him. But Ronald manages to keep out of farther trouble, with Andrew's help. Time goes on, and before long Ron and Malcolm are off to find out if Ron's father is still alive, and to see about rescuing him and his wife. But danger threatens, and after dueling with Duke of Chateaurouge Ronald must fly. So it is that the two become mixed up in Prince Charles fight for the throne of James the second. This is an exciting story, and also an excellent history lesson about Britain's history.

Sheltering an heretical priest, he invokes the wrath of the Praeses and fleeing with his son, he becomes a reluctant supporter of Sophia, the beautiful queen of the Arevaci tribe, in the northern city of Clunia. Really good read
By Peter Hibbert
I have enjoyed the Galdir and Amulet series and before reading the later books in the series I decided to give this one a try. Mr. Nath does not disappoint. Like all the others it is fast paced and I enjoyed especially his take on the conflicts berween religions and the hypocrisy of senior churchmen. The ending of the novel left room for a sequel which I would certainly buy.

Informative and Inspirational
By Uke Teacher
This is a first person account of the author's experience of walking the Camino Frances, the French route of St. James Way. There are some personal accounts of other travels which the author uses at times to make comparisons along the way but for the most part, it is a well detailed account of the places and people along the Way with some historical details incorporated into the story line. It is an easy and enjoyable read and most importantly, it is current and updates some info found in traditional guides. The convenience of an e-book makes it easy to bookmark important passages and make notes. I will be using this as one of my references as I plan my own journey. And you can't beat the price. Many thanks to the author for freely sharing his experience and thoughts.

great book

Author: Annie Murray
Title: Water Gypsies
Genre: Contemporary Fiction, Historical Romance, Historical Fiction, Fiction, Historical, Romance,

I was given this book along with the first book in this series the narrowboat girl.

This book has 458 pages and 50 chapters in it.

I would tell people that you should step outside your comfort zone with books because it is good to add more authors and genres to your reading portfolio. Even if you do not read books like this.

I normally read books of this genre but l also stepped outside my comfort zone with authors and genres l am so glad l did because l have read so many great books and come across some great authors.
I highly recommend this book but l would tell people to have the narrowboat girl as well so you can read the first book in the series and then this book so you know the full story not half.

Synopsis: It is 1942, after a childhood of suffering in Birmingham Maryann Bartholomew has built a life of happiness and safety with her husband Joel and their children, working the canals on his narrowboat, the Esther Jane. But the back-breaking and constant childbearing takes their toll on Maryann, and the tragic loss of her old friend Nancy, followed by a further pregnancy, leads her to commit a desperate act which nearly costs her life, the walls of her security are broken down when Joel suffers an accident and. To keep the boats working, Maryann is forced to allow Sylvia and Dot, two wartime volunteers, in to the privacy of her life. When she discovered that someone keeps calling her at Birmingham's tyseley wharf, the dark memories of her past begin to overwhelm her. For that someone, who seems to be watching her every move, is becoming more dangerous than even she could imagine. This is the seguel to the narrowboat girl. In august 1942 Maryann gives birth to twin girls by then she had two sons named Joel and Ezra and A daughter named Sally after her beloved sister and Maryann also had a son Harry who sadly passed away due to pneumonia and Maryann and Joel named their daughters Ada and Esther after Joel's mother and sister. Maryann's best friend falls in to the water when heavily pregnant and drowns and her unborn baby dies too. Maryann and Darius are very upset and Norman Griffin turns up and sets fire to the boat with Maryann, Sally, Rose and the twins Esther and Ada on and poor Maryann and Ada was burnt and a woman helped her with Ada's burn by putting flour on to dry it up.

Review: I found this book really easy to get in to and hard to put down once l started reading it. I was hooked after reading the first page. I was really happy to be reading the follow on to the narrowboat girl. I was happy to read that Maryann had got a happy life with her husband and their 5 children and I was sad to read that Maryann lost a little boy Harry that he died of pheumonia. I was sad to read that Maryann's best friend Nancy drowned like Ada Joel and Darius's sister but is was very upsetting for Maryann because Nancy was Maryann only friend. She always use to share all her feelings with her sister Sally but she took her own life because of the things Norman Griffin did to her. Maryann and Sally's mother Flo buried Sally under Griffin not Nelson which l thought was wrong after everything Norman did to them poor girls. I thought their mother only cared about herself not her four children. She wanted money not her children. I was sad to read that Nancy's unborn baby died after she fell in the water and drowned and Darius was very upset about the loss of his girlfriend and their unborn baby. I wish Nancy and Daruis could have been married because they made a great couple and l was happy Maryann did not die and she lived after her boat was set on fire. I felt sorry for poor Ada and Maryann being burnt and l hope Norman goes to jail where he belong

Outstanding Fantasy Epic Continues!
By Ronald C. Tobin
Capricious Deities is the second novel set in the multiverse of the Palamaran Dimension. Before going any further, gentle reader of epic fantasy, if you haven't read John Paul Ried's first novel in this setting, RECKLESS AMBITIONS, please do so to maximize enjoyment of this book.

As the story opens, the Palamaran Empire is embroiled in a civil war. The Imperial Palamaran Grand Army is marching south to do battle with the enemies of Emperor Thomas IV, namely Arch Cleric Simon Samelek and Prince Philip Camelon who are leading the Crusader Army for the Liberation of Palomar. The civil war also causes a lot of drama in the background, what with riots caused by criminal organizations in the capital, assassinations and sacking of various noble family estates who happen to be on the wrong side of the conflict.

Ried makes very good use of subplots and really fleshes out his major characters. In perhaps the most persistent subplot, Emperor Thomas IV has become fully aware that his daughter Christina has fallen in love with Colonel Nick Armand, a man of common birth. The Emperor wants his daughter to marry a highborn noble and ensure the future of his dynasty, so he orders Field Marshal Paul Tenisal to have Armand killed. What happens? Read the book and find out! For me, it was most satisfactory.

In the climactic battle between the two armies, Arch Cleric Simon is able, through the death of thousands of soldiers, to cast a spell that gates in Fire God Zemelon to fight for the Crusader Army. Just as it seems all is lost, Professor Enalan, now Supreme Sorcerer for the Palamaran dimension, gates in and engages in an epic battle with the mighty Fire God. Who wins? Read the book!

Anyone who enjoys reading epic fantasy is going to really like this book. It is filled with twists and surprises and it is hard to put it down. If you are like me and a fan of Dungeons and Dragons, then you will REALLY like this book. I can hardly wait for Book 3 to come out. Read this book, you won't regret it.

The Medford Family Chronicles Continue... to inject new life into the medieval fantasy genre.
By John Enfield
“It is amazing how when children act like adults, everyone claps and cheers. When adults act like children, sometimes many people die.”

If you haven’t had the privilege of reading John Paul Ried’s first book, Reckless Ambitions, check out my review of it elsewhere on Amazon, then get the book. Should you find yourself picking up this, his second book, before you find the first one, he’s kind enough to summarize the story so far in the introduction so that you have an inkling of what is going on, but it doesn’t spoil all the surprises you’ll find in the first book. It’s rather like seeing the opening crawl of a Star Wars movie, only a bit longer and more detailed. It’s a nice touch as I have often avoided starting a book series until I can find the first book, sometimes winding up never reading the series at all due to forgetting about it later on before I do find that first book. In this case, you can jump into book 2 without feeling as if you have no idea who these characters are nor what is going on.

Capricious: Adjective. Governed or characterized by caprice: impulsive, unpredictable. From the Italian ‘capriccio’ meaning ‘hedgehog head’ as the word once referred to a sudden shudder of fear that made one’s hair stand on end – Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Once again, John Paul Ried has named his book perfectly. Just as with his first book, which was about the risky attempts to gain more power or influence of many of the main characters and the consequences of their actions, this story is about impulsive, unpredictable, indeed, immature behavior of both the gods and goddesses of his story world and the mortals as well. Ambitions are still high, to be sure, but now, he has upped the ante by adding meddling deities and even more mischief by succubae disguised as lovely ladies. You’ll also meet new fantasy creatures who have come to Palamar from the unexplored North to stir up even more trouble. As with those in book 1, they may seem familiar to veterans of fantasy books and games, but again, John brings his own unique spin to them, making them almost as much of a surprise to the reader as they are to the citizens of the empire who have thought them to be only myths.

As with any good sequel, some detestable villains we’ve come to love to hate from the first story get their just desserts here in this one, while others are up to even worse tricks and new foes are introduced as well. We also have the payoff of more positive moments from the first book with triumphant parades, lovely weddings and underdogs earning much deserved success and recognition. John Paul Ried manages to do the nearly impossible these days, given how many fantasy books are out there, by setting up plot threads that one thinks one can predict the outcome of easily, but then resolving them in totally unexpected ways. While this and book one are very much in the same vein and genre as the more well-known European medieval flavored high fantasy stories out there, he still manages to establish a rather unique identity for them with clever use of twists on actual events from our own world history and pop culture and by coming up with a winning blend of just the right amount of humor and whimsy to keep things from being too serious without letting the book become a farce or satire.

It is possible to enjoy Capricious Deities as a stand- alone story, but it is even better when you read Reckless Ambitions first. I recommend this series for fantasy and even historical fiction fans (as it’s just gritty and detailed enough to appeal to that genre as well) of at least a somewhat high level of maturity. It is fun, to be sure, but there is just enough graphic content to make it not something for kids.

"An Interesting Irony Between Friends"
By Teresa
I listened to the Audible audio version of this story.

TORMENT MOON was a good solid short about two friends, Thomas who was drunk who thought the moon was there just to torture him. Jim was his friend with reason who set him straight. There was good back and forth with these two. The story was visual as well.

JASON MITCHELL did a nice job narrating the story. He has good vocal skills and I'd be interested in hearing more from both author and reader.

Gissing in a strange mood
By H. Schneider
This is a late and relatively short Gissing novel, available only in obscure editions. The man was in an unusually light mood for his standards. One might not recognize it as a Gissing novel at all were the name not on the cover.

What is not there: the ponderous main character who leads us through his life's troubles or few triumphs. There is no pondering here. Central character is a highly unusual man for Gissing: an optimist. Gammon is by nature a pleasure seeker and he is disposed to be easily pleased. He lives in a boarding house and works mostly as a sales rep in thriving London near the end of the 19th century. He seeks a 'permanency' and a pretty young wife and wouldn't mind being rich. He is quite a busybody, always getting involved in other people's affairs.

Quote: 'He set off about his business with all the zest of a healthy boy. If he had any wisdom at all, it consisted in the lack of self-consciousness, the animal acceptance of whatever good the hour might bring.'

Gammon has an interest in genealogy and in family secrets. A friend of his theorizes that every family must have an unknown rich relative somewhere. That is the starting premise for some entertaining confusion in the Victorian style.

This novel has not made Gissing immortal. Rightly so. It is quite flat. Some action, of a rather frivolous kind, but no real subject, no conflict, no dilemma.
Also, I dislike the condescending tone that Gissing uses here more than in his other works. He looks down on his creatures.
