About the Author
Frances Burney (Fanny Burney) was a British novelist who wrote four novels, eight plays, and one biography in her lifetime, and left behind 20 volumes of journals and letters after her death. Self-educated, Burney began writing at the age of 10, and published her first novel, Evelina, anonymously in 1778. Burney followed Evelina's success with Cecilia, Camilla, and The Wanderer, all of which explored the lives of English aristocrats and the role of women in society. Burney s novels were enormously popular during her lifetime, inspiring both Jane Austen and William Makepeace Thackeray, and her journals are recognized for their uncommonly accurate and candid portrayal of 18th-century England. Burney died in Bath, England, in 1840.

One of the earliest romance novels
By Sophy Burnham
As an admirer of Fanny Burney and of 18th century novels (and 19th c), I was a little disappointed. Not as good as EVALINA, but I read it all the way through, not skipping, if that means anything. The story of a foreign orphan woman who blackens her face to flee Revolutionary France, and then must find her way penniless in the high society of 18th century England. Filled with nasty social climbers and of course the romance.

Harbinger of the Storm (Obsidian and Blood Book 2), by Aliette de Bodard

The second book in the critically acclaimed Obsidian and Blood trilogy:

The year is Two House, and the Emperor of the Mexica has just died. The protections he afforded the Empire are crumbling, and the way lies wide open to the flesh-eating star-demons--and to the return of their creator, a malevolent goddess only held in check by the War God's power.

The council should convene to choose a new Emperor, but they are too busy plotting against each other. And then someone starts summoning star-demons within the palace, to kill councilmen...

Acatl, High Priest of the Dead, must find the culprit before everything is torn apart.

REVIEWS:

‘Political intrigue and rivalry among a complex pantheon of divinities drive this well-paced murder mystery set at the height of the Aztec Empire in the late 15th century. De Bodard reintroduces the series hero Acatl, high priest of the dead, immediately following the death of the Tenochtitlan leader. One of the council members in charge of choosing a successor has been brutally murdered in what looks like an attempt to influence the decision. But the deaths continue and the political situation grows more complex, while the empire looks to be increasingly at risk of invasion by malignant powers. Acatl must go face-to-face with the most powerful god in his world and put the good of the empire above his antipathy for is rivals to achieve the uneasy succession. De Bodard incorporates historical fact with great ease and manages the rare feat of explaining complex culture and political system without lecturing or boring the reader.’ —Publishers Weekly

‘Another thing that intrigues me here is the whole fact that historically we know that the real empire died out mysteriously and completely and as such there is always that thought in the back of my mind that the author could choose to bring about the end of days. That highlighted sense of possible doom is something that is missing from too many novels. The way the story is told in this book is very impressive, the plot is both mature and seductive, twisting and turning like a weather vane in a force 9 gale while the action is both bloodthirsty and imaginative. The world building is fantastic and we get to learn even more of this rich culture and the many gods and creatures of the dark. I really can’t fault this book at all and recommend it to one and all but if you haven’t yet read Servant of the Underworld I suggest that you get them both and read them in order, you won’t be disappointed.’ —SF Book Reviews

‘Bodard’s writing is polished and striking, as she convincingly fills in the colorful elements of the Aztec culture–even if those colors tend to be of blood and bile as well as flowers and hummingbirds… beautiful, grimy, breathtaking, and morbid. 5*’ —Examiner

‘Aliette de Bodard has done it again. Harbinger of the Storm is an action packed Aztec mystery opera with magic, interventions from the gods and more twists and turns than the first book. It even has a love story with amusing snippets here and there… The story is self contained and can be enjoyed standalone, but you will not want to miss out on the first. I wish it was 2012 already even if the world is going under while I read the final Obsidian & Blood.’ —Cybermage

Is it the end of the fifth world?
By Ove Jansson, Cybermage.se
The Emperor is dead and so is the protection he provided for the fifth world now threatened by star demons, malicious summoners and inner strife.

It all starts when they find councilor Ocome cut to pieces by a star-demon inside the palace. The demon is on the loose and has to be found. The investigation into the councilor's death starts to peel an onion of mystery with many surprising twists and turns to be enjoyed.

The succession is far from as clear as it ought to be even though the Emperor named his preference and while the council and the different fractions struggle for power they have a star-demon loose in the palace and the wards protecting the world is getting weaker by the hour.

You can compare the story to a traditional detective story with Acatl as the lead detective and Teomitl as his loyal sidekick muscle with the difference that Acatl is the High Priest of the Dead with magical powers of his own beside the deductive mind needed for the job. Teomitl is a member of the Imperial family, the next leader of the House of Darts and a frequent vessel for his gods and their powers. He is also in love with Acatl's sister which his family frown on to say the least. The daughter of peasants? It is not done. As his brother the dead Emperor's chosen successor says.

Acatl continues to show little ambition for power but his life is starting to get intertwined with the ones in power and the gods that favors them. One could say that he is in the hot pan for the duration. I think we get an inkling of how people in a different culture reason and think. That is something I value in a book.

Aliette de Bodard has done it again. Harbinger of the Storm is an action packed Aztec mystery opera with magic, interventions from the gods and more twists and turns than the first book. It even has a love story with amusing snippets here and there, I love formidable women. The story is self contained and can be enjoyed standalone, but you will not want to miss out on the first. I wish it was 2012 already even if the world is going under while I read the final Obsidian and Blood.

Enjoyable as both a mystery and a window into a vanished culture.
By Fred L. Warren
Acatl is Tenochtitlan’s High Priest of the Dead: coroner, funeral director, keeper of the unseen boundaries between the the world of spirits and the world of men--and reluctant detective, when the need arises. He’s a humble, soft-spoken man who’s grown considerably into his duties since last we met him, but now he’s confronted by a new and terrifying challenge.

The Revered Speaker, ruler of Tenochtitlan, is dead, and court intrigue swirls around the naming of his successor. Acatl would prefer to be left out of the political maneuvering, but when one council member is murdered--and more horrifying deaths follow--he has no choice. The murderer has violated the ancient barriers and employed a forbidden magic that threatens to wipe Tenochtitlan and its inhabitants from the face of the earth and usher in the next epoch of history, ready or not.

But how can the priest of a second-rate deity stand against a horde of demons hungry for an apocalypse of blood and fire?

In Harbinger of the Storm, the second volume of Aliette de Bodard’s Obsidian and Blood trilogy, we move deeper into the inner workings of her circa-1400s Aztec society, as seen through the eyes of her unlikely hero, Acatl. This is a world where magical power is tangible, a thread woven through every activity of life, no matter how simple, and the strongest magic derives its power from blood sacrifice. The Aztec society exists in a symbiotic relationship with gods and goddesses who depend on humanity’s devotion while manipulating it to serve their own imponderable agendas. Both men and gods are in turn subject to a fate beyond their control but enigmatic in its vision of the future. War and violence are expected, existence is haunted by fear and uncertainty, and comfort is found only in the daily routines and rituals, constantly seeking the gods’ capricious favor.

Acatl is a man of unique spiritual sensitivity, comfortable in his own skin and in the small universe of his priestly duties, who finds himself pulled out of his comfort zone with distressingly accelerating regularity. He becomes entangled in a confusing royal succession disputed by factions whose motivations and loyalties simultaneously define the complex web of alliance that holds Tenochtitlan together and threaten to tear it asunder. He’s the only man at court without political ambition or instinct, and he must somehow keep these forces in balance, solve the perplexing murders, and, just maybe, survive. It’s a classic fish-out-of-water scenario, where an outmatched individual must find the strength and ingenuity to defeat an overwhelming adversary. Acatl is humble, principled, and determined to protect the people who look to him for leadership. It is those traits, not physical power, genius, charisma, or even magical talent, that see him through. He possesses great courage, but he reminds us that courage and fearlessness aren’t necessarily the same thing. He’s an appealing protagonist, very much in the spirit of Ellis Peters’ Brother Cadfael or G.K. Chesterton’s Father Brown.

Like the first volume, this story is free of explicit content, with little on-stage violence, but there’s also no flinching from the truth that Aztec religious rites often involved human sacrifice, and there’s blood just about everywhere in the temple precincts, dried or dripping. Acatl’s rites for Michtlantechuhtli, the Lord of Death, however, don’t involve human sacrifice, since his clients are already dead and there’s not much point in it. While wearily accepting that it’s the way of things in his culture, it’s clear Acatl would be quite happy if the gods who demand human sacrifice gave up their thirst for blood altogether.

This is a fine story, well-researched, enjoyable as both a mystery and a window into a vanished culture unfamiliar to most of us. Give it a read, but start with the first book, Servant of the Underworld, which introduces Acatl and his community, since the second volume moves at a fair clip and doesn’t dwell much on backstory, though it stands well on its own. As you might expect, it ends on a note that makes it clear that the resolution is only temporary, and more danger and mystery awaits Acatl and his allies in the final volume, Master of the House of Darts.

Another fantastic story about Acatl, High Priest of the Dead, and the political storms of Tenochtitlan, rife with gods, betrayal and intrigue. Highly recommended; start with book one, though, and put aside a full weekend free to read ...

1914 The King Must Die, by Jamie Camplin

June 1914.The social and political leaders of the greatest Empire in the history of the world gather at Buckingham Palace in the presence of King George V and his wife,Queen Mary.Their glittering, complacent world seems strangely immune from the climacteric of destructive forces that threatens it.In Ireland,Catholics and Protestants prepare to cut each other's throats;in England,Suffragettes and Trade Unionists alike see violence as their only weapon;and in Europe hostile nations, locked into an arms race, talk of the glories of war. For the moment, the fabric holds - a bizarre parallel with the private life of Cabinet Minister Walter Ransom, whose contentment seems equally threatened by a failed marriage,a mysterious, volatile mistress who has apparently betrayed him,and a political career which,at the age of 43,has left him only with a deep sense of failure and inadequacy. In a dramatic twist to the account historians of the First World War have given for a century,Prime Minister Asquith sends Ransom to the Germany of the Kaiser Wilhelm 11,where he is offered an escape of an incredible kind:kill his King, kill King George, and live for ever in history. In the midst of the brilliant social life of Royal Ascot and the Ritz, the parties of Prince Lichnowsky and Margot Asquith, and the delights of the Kiel Regatta, the politicians of Europe work out a tangle of ambitions in the pursuit of power. As the King calls a Constitutional Conference on Ireland to try to halt the tide of Civil War that threatens to engulf his country, the Kaiser's own plans plunge on towards their fruition, and one man - Walter Ransom - all his aspirations dead,is left with a terrible decision.

Sublime, clever, engaging from start to finish. A rich and authentic historical fiction which works on every level.
By vital vayness
As I read this book, I so enjoyed not only the story, the characterizations, the astute and intelligent observations, the sensitivities of some moments and the wry sensibilities of others, but more than all, the authentic integration of fact and fiction. Entirely possible, entirely realistic, suspenseful in a very satisfying mode, credible as well as incredible just in the right mixture and proportion, not for one second forced. I consider it a great accomplishment.

I absolutely love it when a story grabs me by the lapels and pulls me in as soon as I open the book. One Lump or Two did exactly that. From page one I was invested in the lives of the quirky characters. I couldn't wait to find out more about their lives, and their escapades, especially our quirky and slightly scatterbrained protagonist Penelope and her childhood friend and flapper extraordinaire Zara.

Learning more about an area of the country that I've never been and an era long past was fun and interesting seeing it through the eyes of the characters. And of course the mystery of "Who did it?" kept me guessing til the end, like any good mystery should. There are plenty of humorous scenes that made my imagination light up with delight trying to picture exactly what they would look like (Zara and Penelope's jail time for example), but I don't want to give too much away, I want you to read it and enjoy it as much as I did!

I highly recommend this first installment in The Tea Cozy Mystery Series and can't wait for the next one!

One Lump or Two is a captivating "who-dunnitt" murder mystery but yet full of humor along the way. It takes place in the roaring 1920's, thus making it even
more entertaining. You can't help but fall in love with Penelope and her quirky personality as well as her sidekick Zara the exotic flapper. Although it is a
murder mystery, the author, Miss Devivre manages to keep this tale light and full of fun and zany adventures. I laughed out loud often at the antics of the heroine and her pals. I felt like I was in the midst of their adventure with them. The descriptions of Penelope's tearoom and Victorian home are enchanting and transported me back to another time of elegance and glamour. The story is strong on camaraderie and the treasure of friendship and teamwork. It is entertaining, humorous galore, and well..... cozy. I hope there will be sequels to this book and more quirky escapades with these unique characters! I give it 5 teacups plus a sugar cube!

The world is at war, but can their love survive?

Barbara Howell isn’t your typical girl. Since she was little, Barb was told she had one job—find a husband and give him children. Instead of conforming to her mother and society, Barb chooses Wellesley College in favor of finding a husband. And in meeting Lois Dubbs, her whirlwind of a roommate, Barb finally finds where she fits in the world—at Wellesley.

In her determination to embrace nonconformity, and displease her mother, Barb closes herself off to even the possibility of finding love. She has no interest in being arm candy, or taking the back seat to a man—especially one who intentionally antagonizes and teases her… Even if he does have the most dazzling blue eyes she’s ever seen.

From the moment he laid eyes on her, Van Judson knew Barb was the girl for him. Luckily for him, Van is patient—which he needs to be when dealing with a feisty dame like Barb.

Around Van, Barb slowly lowers her guard and comes to realize she has lessons to learn that cannot be taught in a classroom. Soon she is swept away on a current of first love and infatuation. But Barb is about to discover that falling in love is the easy part…

When Pearl Harbor is attacked, recruitment offices are flooded with determined young men… And Van is no exception. The world is at war. How can Barb and Van survive the distance…and the danger?

About the Author

Armed with scraps of paper and a lot of tape, I sat down to create my first work of fiction aged six. Since then I have been honing my skill and have moved on to computers and have found them to be a lot less sticky.

A voracious reader, I devour as many books a year as I can get my hands on and when I’m not falling head first into other worlds, I am creating my own.

As well as erotic fiction, I also write Young Adult and historical romances.

I live in Scotland with my husband and two children. We also share our home with a bonkers cat who makes life interesting at the very least.

intelligent man who can see Barb for who she is ...
By SJ
When You're Gone is the story of Barb and Van. Barb is an independent, goal oriented woman in an era where the goal for a woman was to get married and have babies. Barb wants that but she wants so much more. Van is the patient, caring, intelligent man who can see Barb for who she is and still wants her. This story is set during the 1940's and World War II and is told strictly from Barb's POV. Although not much of the war is discussed, it definitely plays a part in the storyline. Characters are very well developed and so is the scenery. Romantic scenes are pretty tame and low key. Author does a good job of making you feel like you stepped back in time to watch this story unfold. I would have given this a 5 star but the story was a little drawn out. I felt that either more should have been happening or that the story could have been shortened by about 100 pages. Much of the book is internal debate that Barb has with herself. This got tiresome after a while. I did enjoy the view of Van's journal towards the end of the book. It was an interesting way to put his POV in the storyline.

This is a stand alone novel and does have an HEA.

The more I read Historical Romance novels the more I am finding out that I really enjoy them. There is just something that seems so much easier about life back then. In this case the book takes place around 1941 and the attack on Pearl Harbor.

In When You’re Gone we are introduced right off the bat to Barb and her family, her older sister Anna and their parents. I learned quick that Barb is the same kind of woman that I am. Strong, independent, and stubborn. Which isn’t always a good thing, especially back in the 1940’s. The late 30’s was still one of those times were it was believed that women should be at home with the kids and taking care of the house while the husband was out working. That however was not how Barb saw her life.

This book is told from the point of view of Barb, and I was instantly drawn to her character. The author really dives into the characters and let’s you see who they are, and what makes them tick. I found it made things a lot easier in following the story and understanding why she would do certain things.

The love that she wasn’t looking for and didn’t want was found in Van, the male lead in the book. The connection was one that he realized right off the bat but it took Barb quite awhile to let him in. Van was willing to wait though. He saw what they could have and was willing to wait and work for it.

The multiple settings that are used throughout the book are also well written. But again I believe that it is the clarity of which the character’s are written that made the story for me.
Because of the detail in the story and with the characters I give this book a 5 Rose rating.

Favorite Quote: “Disappointed that you didn’t get a chance to embarrass me, since you thought your knowledge of the Divine Comedy was more superior to mine?”

Boom town history from the view of the miner
By A Customer
Stephen covers the birth of a gold and silver boom town from the first prospects with a gold pan in a freezing mountain stream to the discovery of silver in "worthless black sands" to the greatest modern mines in the world. He documents the joys and sorrows of the miners and their families, the riches made and lives lost. He covers the details of mining - from individual gold panning and sluicing to two-man candlestick lit tunnels to modern corporate production mines. He describes hand-drilling of rock with doublejack and steel and continues to today's compressed air drills. He documents the use of black powder, dynamite and modern explosives - and the risks and deaths caused by their misuse. He tells of burros, mules and electric haulage trains. He does this all from the viewpoint of someone who has been there and done that. He has prospected in freezing Alaskan streams and done hardrock mining beneath deserts and alpine meadows. Stephen knows mining inside and out - literally. This book is more than a history of one Colorado boom town, it is a history of Western hardrock mining and the men and women who loved, lived and died mining.

La balsa de piedra / The Stone Raft (Contemporanea) (Spanish Edition), by José Saramago

This work may be the most original and emblematic metaphor written in the last half century. Suddenly a set of internal breakthroughs may be felt around the perimeter of Spain; this chain of events will eventaully lead to Spain to dissociate from Europe and son in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean the island will progressively get close into America.

A prodigious and pleasant ro read novel.

Loved it! Refreshing change from most historical romances!
By HSlady
Three stories in this collection of adventure romance novels by Stanley John Weyman. Written over a hundred years ago, these stories offer a refreshing style.

I've only read the first one so far - Under the Red Robe- and loved it!! It was a fun, fast moving adventure set in Paris in 1630. I found it very well written, with a story that kept me wanting to read more, interesting detail (but not too much) and interesting unique expressions (these days, anyway). This particular novel was written in 1894! After reading this novel, I looked up the author, and was not surprised to read that " his authenticity and attention to contextual detail caused his works...to be widely acclaimed for their romantic content and faithful historical accuracy". [...]. Even better, this is a free book! Wow!

The first story begins with a gentleman playing cards at his club in Paris and being accused of cheating. Not one to allow an insult like that to go unchallenged, he challenges the young brash fool to a duel. He wounds the young man, and since dueling is illegal and also he has duelled before (and killed 6 men previously), he is brought before Cardinal Richelieu, a very powerful man, who is about to dispense justice. The Cardinal is eventually convinced to give him an option - his life or find and arrest a M. de Cocheforet, most likely through less than upright means, which is distastful, but what choice? The adventure continues from there. And there is a lot of adventure.

I will add summaries of the other two novels as I find time. Happy reading.

A Gentleman of France
By Kindle Customer
I thoroughly enjoyed the rhythm, pace, plot twists, and vocabulary used in this book, including the French. It reminds me of Alexander Dumas' novels. The syntax almost resembled a translation from the French. I now am spurred to check the history of the Huguenots further since my husband's Huguenot ancestors came from St. Malo, France, fleeing persecution in the 17th century, settling in Virginia.

3 excellent novels!
By Franklana
I actually downloaded each of these novels separately, not this particular collection.

True Weyman style, the novels are in historical context surrounding some tumultuous historical period in France. He creates intense tension, which leads you to read non-stop until the end of the novel. It is a level of start realism, depicting the level of paranoia, political intrigue, and subterfuge, usually through the eye of a down and out antihero.

Characters are often complex and not all good nor all bad.

Enjoy!

Cloister and the Hearth
By Rudyard
This is not a content review.
This is a review of only the Wildside Press edition (9781434493880)
of this title.
5 stars for Charles Reade's novel - 3 stars for Wildside Press.

"The Cloister and the Hearth" is a terrific historical novel
and deserves better treatment than that given it by Wildside
Press (9781434493880). The Wildside Press edition has
left out the first three paragraphs of Chapter One - one of
the greatest introductory sections in all 19th century English fiction.
This is really irresponsible - it's tantamount to leaving out
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." from Dickens'
"A Tale of Two Cities".
Here's just the beginning of what was left out. This is how Chapter One
is supposed to begin:
"Not a day passes over the earth, but men and women of no note do great deeds, speak great words, and suffer noble sorrows. Of these obscure heroes, philosophers, and martyrs, the greater part will never be known till that hour, when many that are great shall be small, and the small great; but of others the world's knowledge may be said to sleep: their lives and characters lie hidden from nations in the annals that record them. The general reader cannot feel them, they are presented so curtly and coldly: they are not like breathing stories appealing to his heart, but little historic hailstones striking him but to glance off his bosom: nor can he understand them; for epitomes are not narratives, as skeletons are not human figures."

good historical fiction
By Wayne S. Walker
It is the latter half of the fifteenth century, and twenty-two year old Gerard Eliassoen is the eldest of nine children of Elias, a cloth merchant, and his wife Catherine of Tergou, Holland. His next two younger brothers, Richart and Jacob, have left for work in Amsterdam. Another brother became a tailor, and his oldest sister a robe maker. That left four others at home, the dwarf Giles, the crippled Kate, and the two youngest, Cornelis and Sybrant, both ne’er-do-wells. Gerard has been taught by the monks, became a scribe and illuminator, and is destined for service in the Church. However, on the way to a contest in Rotterdam, where some of his work has been entered, he meets Peter Brandt, a physician from the nearby village of Sevenbergen, and immediately falls in love with the doctor’s daughter Margaret. They also run across Ghysbrecht van Swieten, Burgomaster of Tergou, who years before had secretly cheated Peter’s father out of a huge sum of money.

Gerard decides that he will not become a priest, and he and Margaret privately elope. Gerard’s father opposes their relationship, and Ghysbrecht is afraid that Gerard may find out how he had cheated the Brandts, so Gerard is arrested. With the help of Margaret and an old friend of the Brandt’s named Martin, Gerard escapes and goes to Italy, hoping to gain information that will clear him. Meanwhile, Cornelis and Sybrant are jealous of their brother and conspire with Ghysbrecht to steal a letter being sent by a messenger from Margaret to Gerard and substitute a message stating that she has died, so he goes ahead and becomes a monk. Soon, Margaret gives birth to her and Gerard’s child, little Gerard. How can all this mess be resolved? Will Gerard and Margaret ever be able to get back together? And what will happen to the child? A fictional account of the birth of Desiderius Erasmus who is thought to have been born Gerard Gerardson, The Cloister and the Hearth is a typical Victorian novel with all kinds of story twists and subplots, having as its main theme the struggle between man’s obligations to family and to Church.

From an educational standpoint, the book contains a meticulous recreation of fifteenth-century European life with mention of various historical persons, often describing the events, people, and practices in minute detail. From an ethical standpoint, there are many references to drinking wine, but there also incidents which show the dangers of alcohol abuse. Also, it shows how important religion was to the lives of people at that time. At his lowest ebb, Gerard contemplates suicide but prays and turns away from his plan. Of course, the religion portrayed is Roman Catholic, and many practices with which non-Catholics will disagree, such as praying to saints and the demands of priestly celibacy, which even Reade admits is a “not quite reasonable” only a couple of pages from the end, are mentioned, but this is simply part of the historical background. It is not an easy read, with dialogue is written in a deliberately archaic style intended to evoke the Middle Ages, but it well illustrates how proper attitudes “could raise two truelovers’ hearts to the loving heart of their Father in Heaven.”

I enjoyed the story but found the spelling errors and missing words irritating. Spelling mistakes drive me crazy! "conceded" instead of "conceited' and places where words were just left off the end of the sentences. Please find a new proof reader. I did enjoy the story and will look for the next episode.

PRICE OF PEACE, by JENNIFER DICAMILLO

Thirteenth century Wales was a volatile place to live. At best, the clans found uneasy peace through marital alliances. At worst, it was taken by force. More often than not, the fields were made rich through the blood of generations. The price of peace? Sometimes unbearable payments -- made in installments. And sometimes ... The Price of Peace had to be paid in full. The people of Gwynedd don't bury their dead easily. The wheels of war were already in motion. To stem the flow of blood at Axtyn's gates, Rob and Carys were forced into marriage. It was the only way to save their clan's people from certain slaughter. But who or what could save them from each other? Honor? Loyalty? True love? Sometimes living day to day for what you value is harder than dying for it. Take heart Destiny doles out its own rewards--but it doesn't come cheap.

A rocky yet powerful tale
By Midwest Book Review
Written by an award-winning poet, freelance journalist, author, and playwright, The Price Of Peace is a novel set in thirteenth century Wales, where clans often sought peace through marital alliances - but when war erupted, the feud could spill the blood of generations. To save both their clans from annihilating one another, Rob and Carys were forced into marriage - but what is to save them from one another? A rocky yet powerful tale about learning to accept what life brings and find unexpected joy in the heart of difficulty. Highly recommended.

A GREAT BOOK!
By Amazon Customer
This normally isnt my genre, but a close friend turned me onto this book and I couldn't put it down. Great dialogue, great combat, realistic relationship between characters. Real enough to frustrate you! Just like real life, ummm, if you lived in 13th century Wales and were caught up in the interclan struggles as good men, bad men, good women and bad women vied to win the day.

Reading for the second time...
By Glenna Muse
One of the biggest compliments I can give this novel is that I'm reading it a second time. I often do that when the characters are compelling to me enough at the end that I want to go back and re-read their story now that I "know" them, so to speak. When you wipe away all the historical setting, this book is about real people, flawed, but real people trying to live their lives in peace and make their part of the world a better place. The characters are well developed and became very much my friends by the end of the book. I lived their story with them.
