The Beasts of Tarzan, by Edgar Rice Burroughs

“The entire affair is shrouded in mystery,” said D’Arnot. “I have it on the best of authority that neither the police nor the special agents of the general staff have the faintest conception of how it was accomplished. All they know, all that anyone knows, is that Nikolas Rokoff has escaped.”
John Clayton, Lord Greystoke—he who had been “Tarzan of the Apes"—sat in silence in the apartments of his friend, Lieutenant Paul D’Arnot, in Paris, gazing meditatively at the toe of his immaculate boot.
His mind revolved many memories, recalled by the escape of his arch-enemy from the French military prison to which he had been sentenced for life upon the testimony of the ape-man.
He thought of the lengths to which Rokoff had once gone to compass his death, and he realized that what the man had already done would doubtless be as nothing by comparison with what he would wish and plot to do now that he was again free.
Tarzan had recently brought his wife and infant son to London to escape the discomforts and dangers of the rainy season upon their vast estate in Uziri—the land of the savage Waziri warriors whose broad African domains the ape-man had once ruled.
He had run across the Channel for a brief visit with his old friend, but the news of the Russian’s escape had already cast a shadow upon his outing, so that though he had but just arrived he was already contemplating an immediate return to London.
“It is not that I fear for myself, Paul,” he said at last. “Many times in the past have I thwarted Rokoff’s designs upon my life; but now there are others to consider. Unless I misjudge the man, he would more quickly strike at me through my wife or son than directly at me, for he doubtless realizes that in no other way could he inflict greater anguish upon me. I must go back to them at once, and remain with them until Rokoff is recaptured—or dead.”
As these two talked in Paris, two other men were talking together in a little cottage upon the outskirts of London. Both were dark, sinister-looking men…

A classical Tarzan tale
By A Customer
Although this is not my favourite of the Tarzan books, it is definitely an excellent story. I just started to read about the adventures of Tarzan and can barely put the books down. Edgar Rice Burrougs is an amazing author. "The Beasts of Tarzan" is no exception.
After Jane and their son Jack are kidnapped, Tarzan has to return to the jungle. Once more he has to rely on his wits and his above-human strength and physique to survive in the jungle. Making several new friend (not all of them human) he has to track down Jane, his son and the men who captured them.
"The Beasts of Tarzan" is an excellent adventure story and well worth the read.

The bad guys make the mistake of kidnapping Jane and son
By Lawrance Bernabo
"The Beasts of Tarzan" is the third novel about the Lord of the Jungle by Edgar Rice Burroughs. "The Beasts of Tarzan" finds the ape lord settled in civilized London as Lord Greystoke. But he becomes the target of his enemy, Nikolas Rokoff, and his henchman Alexis Paulvitch. The pair abducts Tarzan's Jane and their infant son Jack. Tarzan ends up stranded on a desert island, but with the help of Sheeta the panther and Akut the great ape he makes it back to the mainland. There he meets Mugambi, the giant chief of he Wagambi tribe, a character who goes on to become Tarzan's lifelong friend and ally (a welcome relief after the way virtually all of the natives were just a different sort of jungle animal for Tarzan to torment and kill). This odd group heads off together after the kidnappers into the deep jungle and when Tarzan finds them he lets his inner beast come up with creative ways of making them pay for the mistake of taking his wife and son. If you start reading the Tarzan novels in particular, or the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs in general, in the same order that they were written, then "The Beasts of Tarzan" is pretty much around the time that it becomes clear that the storyline is usually the same. Our hero is separated from the woman he loves and spends most of the book getting her back. You can throw a baby into the mix, change the impediments placed in the way, or alter the locale from Africa to Mars, Pellucidar or the Land That Time Forgot (far and away the best part of the recipe), but the basic plot remains the same. Burroughs was also getting tired of having to write about Tarzan, which he would prove in the next book in the series, "The Son of Tarzan," where baby Jack grows up to become Korak the Killer. Unfortunately there were more than twenty more Tarzan novels to come, which would rely more and more of a formulaic approach.

ride or die
By jib n. smith
I like tarzan books. This one was great as well. Tarzan finally got to see some of his enemies die, which was satisfying for me. Also, I enjoyed the "lord of nature" aspect of the book. Anyone that can control a pack of apes and a panther is pretty cool. After I read this book, I just wanted to fight another animal to the death. After I killed it, I would stand above it with the blood running down my throat and scream like tarzan does. I recommend this book for any father who is worried his son might grow up to be weak. Once again, great book.

Good portrayal of events leading up to the full takeover ...
By Gloria Adams
Good portrayal of events leading up to the full takeover of Germany by Adolf Hitler. Realistic story of two Jews and their Gentile friends as they attempt to grow up in Berlin, Germany, from 1932 until 1946. Historical fiction at its best.

From Cardinals to Crows Flies High
By Steven M Forman
From Cardinals to Crows is a fast paced, unique perspective on the Holocaust. All the horror is there but so is the power of hope as told through the eyes of old friends forced to find their way through the nightmare of World War Two. TR Adams gives an old story a new twist traveling inside the minds of those forced to live through hell on earth. A good read.

Blood and Roses, by Catherine Hokin

Blood and Roses tells the story of Margaret of Anjou (1430-82), wife of Henry VI and a key protagonist in the Wars of the Roses. This is a feminist revision of a woman frequently imagined only as the shadowy figure demonised by Shakespeare - Blood and Roses examines Margaret as a Queen unable to wield the power and authority she is capable of, as a wife trapped in marriage to a man born to be a saint and as a mother whose son meets a terrible fate she has set in motion. It is the story of a woman caught up in the pursuit of power, playing a game ultimately no one can control...

History is written by the victors
By Barb Taub
There are two problems with history. First of all, it’s boring. And second, it’s wrong. In her debut novel, Blood and Roses, author Catherine Hokin brilliantly solves both of those problems as she invites us to reconsider what history “tells” us about Margaret of Anjou, the English Queen who led Lancastrian forces in the Wars of the Roses.

So…Margaret of Anjou. Isn’t she the French princess who married Henry VI of England, had an affair with the Duke of Suffolk and bore him an illegitimate son before wandering around carrying his severed head? Wasn’t she Shakespeare’s “she-wolf of France” who led the army of rapists and murderers bent on sacking Ludlow until confronted by heroic Cecily of York? And when Margaret triumphed over her great enemy, the Duke of York, didn’t she wipe his brow with a handkerchief soaked in the blood of his child, before putting a paper crown on his head, stabbing him, and putting his severed head on a pike? Wasn’t she just the mother-in-law from hell to her son’s wife, Anne of York? That Margaret of Anjou?

Um…no. Sometimes, when “history” has passed judgement on the losing side, we can turn to fiction for a closer reality. Catherine Hokin starts with what we do know.

Marguerite’s life is introduced by the older version of herself, a woman desperately trying to stave off the judgement of history by writing her own truth—a desire she knows is almost certainly doomed.

[Quote] “She wants, well it is simple really, she wants to be remembered as more than the monster she feels sure history will paint her. A simple wish but it is out of her hands.” [End Quote]

The child Marguerite was raised by two of the strongest women in medieval Europe, her mother Isabelle and grandmother Yolande, famously known for being strong leaders in the place of their weak husbands. “My childhood was shaped by women, women so strong they made the men around them fade to shadows.”

With introductory comments and remarks from her future self, we meet Marguerite as a young girl, excited with the prospect of marrying a handsome young king and becoming his queen. Throughout her proxy marriage and journey to finally meet her husband, the truth of her marriage is kept secret from her—that Henry VI is obsessed with religion, his hold on reality tenuous at best.

When they finally meet, Henry makes it clear that he sees himself as a man of God, devout and above all celibate. After years of frustration, in fact, he tells her:

[Quote] “I have my God, Margaret, and I will turn to him when the demands around me become too great. I will find solace. You will have nothing.’ It was not a curse, it was not a threat; he said the words as though they were a simple truth and then he left her, bruised and shaking as though from a blow.” [End Quote]

Alone in a foreign court, with even her name changed from Marguerite to Margaret, the young queen realizes that the slightest misstep could be fatal. But she also realizes something else. As the daughter and granddaughter of strong women, she recognizes the uses and seduction of power.

Thus she charts a path over the next ten years designed to solidify her power. At the same time, she hides her secret—her virginity in an era where a woman’s greatest value lies in her ability to produce sons. And when at last, her greatest dream and triumph is achieved and she does have a son, everything she has is devoted to the single-minded determination to see him crowned king.

Catherine Hokin has imagined many insightful explanations for the events of Margaret’s life. Most spectacular and surprising are the machinations leading to the conception and birth of her son Edward—in a brilliant development that I didn’t see coming. (Of course, neither did Shakespeare, Margaret’s contemporaries, or future historians!)

We watch as Margaret becomes not just a woman, but a queen who walks a minefield where any misstep means death. She uses friends, forces opponents to serve her demands, and ruthlessly eliminates enemies. She tells herself that every action is justified by her concerns for her son and her crown.

But as an old woman, alone and (relatively) poor, Margaret acknowledges the real truth.

[Quote] “She has endured pain and loss that would have broken many but she still survives. She has enjoyed power and knows what a strange thing it is: she has learned how, once tasted, it is very hard to lose the love of it and, too often, the pursuit of it becomes more than the getting. She has had it and she has lost it; she has never learned not to want it.” [End Quote]

Blood and Roses is a big story, played out on epic battlefields, with the fate of a nation as the stakes, her son’s life as the entry fee, and a crown as the prize. Catherine Hokin’s meticulous research into the historical elements, her obvious empathy for the decisions Margaret makes, and her ability to weave Margaret’s story as woman, mother, and queen are remarkable.

Being greedy, I could have wished for just a bit more. The book is already huge, but I’d have liked to see more description of the settings, a sense of what Margaret sees, smells, touches, tastes, and surrounds herself with. Dialog is always going to be a problem, and certainly I don’t expect the book to read like lines from Shakespeare’s plays. But it would have been fun to get a little more sense of the time and place in history. As a woman and even as a queen—especially a queen—Margaret of Anjou had to maintain the fiction that she was what her grandmother advised all those years ago.

[Quote] ‘Because people believe that power rests with kings and with men and they believe that a woman’s greatest strength lies in her virtue and her meekness. They like their queens to smile and obey their husbands like all women are expected to do. You may not like that, you may not find such a part an easy one to play but it is what the world expects and you have to learn it.’

You will struggle with it as we all struggle, that is the real truth you need to learn.[End Quote]

And even more, I would have liked to see or hear about the passion that clearly lives within the quiet face Margaret guarded so carefully. But overall, Blood and Roses is a huge achievement. By reimagining the life of a woman history labelled a villain, Catherine Hokin reminds us to look carefully at the things we think we know about history that just aren’t so. I would give it four stars for a spectacular debut effort, and certainly look for more from this very talented writer.

one can more easily understand why Margaret continued to fight against him when ...
By Carpe Librum
Striving to make Margaret of Anjou a sympathetic character is a task that few authors have taken on. Conn Iggulden did an admirable job with her younger years in Stormbird, and Susan Higginbotham successfully created a Margaret that the reader understands if not always feels sorry for. Catherine Hokin set out in this novel to establish that, while Margaret may not have been a saint, neither were the power players she found herself surrounded by.

Let's face it. It isn't entirely possible to turn Margaret from she-wolf into prim princess, but Hokin demonstrates how her hand was forced. Margaret may not have always responded to events the way she should have, but she was fiercely loyal to a husband who continuously failed her, a son who never reached his potential, and, in her own way, a country that never accepted her. Watching Margaret thrust into a situation that was impossible from the beginning creates a little bit of sympathy for her, even in the heart of the most devoted Yorkist.

Part of what makes the reader appreciate Margaret's position is the more negative portrayal of those she is opposed to. By leaving Edward of March his golden sheen but also exposing some of the ruthlessness and cruelty beneath, one can more easily understand why Margaret continued to fight against him when everyone else accepted his rule.

She is stubborn or devoted, depending on how you look at her. She makes some really bad decisions, regretting some of them and justifying others. She is a mother who would do anything for her child . . . . no matter who his father might be.

On the topic of Prince Edward's paternity, Hokin takes a rather different track than any I've read previously. I won't give anything away, but (whether I agree or not) at least it's unique.

I appreciate the author's goal of propping up the reputation of Margaret of Anjou, a woman who was dealt a losing hand right from the get-go. Still, it is challenging to feel sorry for one who caused so much death and destruction. Even with the York boys given rather nasty personalities in this novel, I couldn't help but wonder how many lives would be saved if Margaret would simply accept her defeat. Of course, eventually she is left with no other choice.

I thank Catherine Hokin for my copy of this novel in return for an honest review.

A Rose by Any Other Name
By sagababe
Written from her perspective, this book traces the fortunes and misfortunes of Margaret of Anjou from her childhood in the 1430s to her lonely and isolated exile in France in 1481. The narrative follows her as she is prepared for her marriage to the austere and monk-like King Henry, a diplomatic marriage that goes nowhere, through the rise of the House of York, and the start of the brutal civil War of the Roses.

The story unfolds retrospectively, each chapter beginning with Margaret's thoughts about what has happened, which we then experience. The politics are complicated, with people changing sides and armies appearing, being slaughtered and re-forming. The brutality of the times is clearly depicted as well as the duplicity and expediency that Margaret had to employ to stay in shaky control. Despite being the 'heroine' she is portrayed and portrays herself with unflinching honesty.

This is little known period of history in fictional terms - it was not known to this reviewer, but by the end of the book, I had a far better grasp of the events. What, for me, made this an outstanding read, was the writer's prose style, which lifts off the page with its imagery.eg: 'We know when a momentous event is about to happen; that shiver, a coldness, a sign passes across the day that brings a calamity with it.'

I recommend this book for the writer's skill in dealing with a complex and convoluted period of history, and for the rich and lyrical style with which she deals with it.

Presidential Agent (The Lanny Budd Novels), by Upton Sinclair

On the eve of World War II, Lanny Budd reenters the deadly snake pit of Nazi Germany as a presidential spy

An American art expert raised in a world of European wealth and privilege, Lanny Budd is dedicated to his socialist ideals and to combatting the twin scourges of Nazism and Fascism. In 1937, a chance encounter in New York with Professor Charles Alston—his boss at the Paris Peace Conference and now one of President Roosevelt’s top advisors—provides Lanny with the opportunity to make a profound difference.

Appointed Presidential Agent 103, the international art dealer embarks on a secret assignment that takes him back into the Third Reich as the Allied powers prepare to cede Czechoslovakia to Adolf Hitler in a futile attempt to avoid war. But Lanny’s motivations are not just political: The woman he loves has fallen into the brutal hands of the Gestapo, and Lanny will risk everything to save her.

Presidential Agent is the action-packed fifth installment of Upton Sinclair’s Pulitzer Prize–winning series that brings the first half of the twentieth century to dramatic life. An astonishing mix of history, adventure, and romance, the Lanny Budd Novels are a testament to the breathtaking scope of the author’s vision and his singular talents as a storyteller.

Review
Praise for the Lanny Budd Novels
“These historical novels engulfed me in the thrilling and terrible imperatives of history. . . . Sinclair’s historical acumen and his calculations about powerful institutions—government, press, corporations, oil cartels and lobbyists—remain remarkably shrewd and often prescient.” —The New York Times

“Few works of fiction are more fun to read; fewer still make history half as clear, or as human.” —Time

“When people ask me what has happened in my long lifetime, I do not refer them to the newspaper files and to the authorities, but to [Upton Sinclair’s] novels.” —George Bernard Shaw

“A great and well-balanced design . . . I think it the completest and most faithful portrait of that period that has been done or will likely be done.” —H. G. Wells

About the Author
Upton Sinclair (1878–1968) was a Pulitzer Prize–winning author, activist, and politician whose novel The Jungle (1906) led to the passage of the Federal Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act. Born into an impoverished family in Baltimore, Maryland, Sinclair entered City College of New York five days before his fourteenth birthday. He wrote dime novels and articles for pulp magazines to pay for his tuition, and continued his writing career as a graduate student at Columbia University. To research The Jungle, he spent seven weeks working undercover in Chicago’s meatpacking plants. The book received great critical and commercial success, and Sinclair used the proceeds to start a utopian community in New Jersey. In 1915, he moved to California, where he founded the state’s ACLU chapter and became an influential political figure, running for governor as the Democratic nominee in 1934. Sinclair wrote close to one hundred books during his lifetime, including Oil! (1927), the inspiration for the 2007 movie There Will Be Blood; Boston (1928), a documentary novel revolving around the Sacco and Vanzetti case; The Brass Check, a muckraking exposé of American journalism; and the eleven novels in the Pulitzer Prize–winning Lanny Budd series.

The Rise of Fascism in Europe and the USA in the 1930s
By Johns
Book 5 of the World's End series introduces Franklin Roosevelt as a main character. It continues the high standard of earlier books in the series. Spain has just fallen, victim of a German and Italian invasion, where the Axis powers gained practice in the use of tanks and planes. What is Roosevelt to do? The book explains the pressures on Roosevelt from different powerful groups that prevented him from intervening to help the Spanish people. The book also reveals the nature of secret deals between American industrialists and European cartels, e.g. I.G. Farben and Standard Oil.

Britain was printing pro-Fascist propaganda in newspapers owned by Lord Beaverbrook, and Nazi propaganda was being published in the USA and France. There was to be a war on Socialism and a "Red" in France was "anybody who expressed dissatisfaction with the existing economic system or proposed any change which would weaken control of the country by the present owning classes." The French ruling classes considered that it would be better to have Hitler running France than Léon Blum. What was at stake was the Catholic religion, the institution of the family and the private property system. "Because the democratic system put the ignorant mob in control and put the country at the mercy of venal, unprincipled politicians, that system was accursed and must be abolished." The Spanish Civil War is regarded as "an invasion by foreign Fascists, hired by Spanish landlords, great capitalists and high prelates of a degenerate Church."

There is more on spiritualism. Upton Sinclair investigated this subject quite thoroughly (his detailed investigation of the medium Arthur Ford appear in the two volumes of the Occult Review Reader). The spirit of Basil Zaharoff appears at a seance and claims that Lord Kitchener died on a ship bound for Russia with much gold on it to stop the revolution. The reader is left to speculate as to whether this incident actually occurred in reality as Sinclair does not discuss his investigation of spiritualism in his autobiography.

The atmosphere of impending doom builds as the book progresses. Charismatic psychopath Hermann Goring features strongly. The situation in Spain deteriorates as France closes its border while Hitler continues to supply General Franco with all the supplies he needs. In America the situation was deteriorating too was it was appearing that "New Deal spending was coming to the unhappy close which everybody had predicted for it, though nobody seemed to have anything to take its place." The character of Hitler features too, and he expresses how the prophet Mohammed was an inspiration for him. Sinclair's passion for detail is evident. The driving force of Nazi Fascism is presented as coming from "a little group of proud and bigoted [East-Elbian] aristocrats whose power was based upon the ownership of huge estates, in a part of Europe where the armies of Napoleon had not penetrated to break up land monopoly. These proud Junkers, nearly all of them high-ranking military men, were using Adi Schicklgruber the gutter-rat as their newest tool, their rabble-rouser and mob-deceiver, and when they were through with him they would send him to join his tens of thousands of victims." As 1938 dawns, Fascist agents in the States attack Jews in New York and promote the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion and Fascism gains another victory as Britain and Italy force France to close its border with Spain once more. Britain is depicted as a country comprised of descendants of Norman victors and Saxon losers.

But, was there to be peace in the world at long last with agreement in Munich?

Highly informative for anyone interested in American and European history of the 1930s.

Romance! Music! Spies! Art! Nazis! Spiritualists! A giant historical binge-read!
By Michelle Leberfeld
If you want to take a new look at 20th Century politics (whose themes are still playing out today), this is a great series to "binge-read". The Kindle version has a LOT of typos, but that's not Sinclair Lewis' fault. If anyone is listening: The Lanny Budd Novels is the next "Downtown Abbey" (IMHO). Who should play Lanny?

Life in a Yorkshire Whaling Town During the Napoleonic Wars
By Thomas Cotterill
From a masculine standpoint, *Sylvia's Lovers* is not a promising title for a novel. It sounds like a Harlequin romance when, in fact, it is a marvellous evocation of life in a rugged Yorkshire whaling town in the late 1700s. The English are at war with the French (again) and the vividly depicted harbour town bustles with whaling activity while the King's press gangs roam the narrow streets looking for able-bodied sailors they can strong-arm into a navy desperate for new recruits. As they make their daily rounds, the locals must walk furtively, resentfully watchful for the hated gangs. Emotions run high. There are outbreaks of violence.

The lovers of the novel's title are Philip Hepburn, an intelligent stooping local shop clerk, and Charlie Kinraid, a fine figure of a man who is a daring harpooner on a whaling ship. Sylvia is a pretty farm girl with an aversion to all book learning that does not involve the "Greenland seas" where the romantic Kinraid plies his perilous icy trade. The classic love triangle sets up when Philip loves Sylvia but *she* falls hard for Charlie Kinraid after he is wounded while bravely defending his shipmates from a press gang. (The name Kinraid is suggestive. Philip is a cousin of Sylvia's and Kinraid is trespassing on a relationship blessed by Sylvia's parents.) On the side, we have quiet self-effacing Hester Rose, who loves Philip with the constancy and devotion that men dream of but seldom find.

When it comes to competing for Sylvia's affections, bookish sombre Philip does not stand a dog's chance against the manly Charlie Kinraid. And here is where the author sets out her theme. Every major character in the book, barring quick-witted Charlie, is relentlessly obtuse and self-defeating. Philip could have Hester's abiding love, but barely notices the faithful young woman. Charlie is a known womanizer, but Sylvia will hear nothing said against him. Sylvia is a deliberate dunce, too tightly bound to her parents, and treats Philip with callous disregard, but the learned and sensitive Philip overlooks all. Instead of turning away, he masochistically continues to woo silly Sylvia in spite of her cruel slights and rebuffs. Hester refuses to declare her ardent love for Philip. Sylvia's father foolishly leads a mob against an active press gang going about the King's business. Sylvia's mother cannot cope with her grief. When faced with disgrace, Philip runs off like a child who has wet himself rather than deal with the situation like a man. Naturally, his craven act wins him nothing but catastrophe.

Gaskell is revealing just how weak, foolish, and self-defeating most people are. We turn away from what we could have, to chase things that can never be. We delude ourselves, ignore reality, and engage in the worst kinds of wishful thinking. We run away when we should make a stand. We make trouble when we should make peace. We hurt one another when, with just a little more intelligence, we could improve one another's lives immensely. Gaskell's theme is humanity's most egregious and enduring flaw.

Charlie Kinraid is Gaskell's foil. Charlie is always effective. He is a first rate harpooner who always hits his mark. Even when captured by the press gangs he manages to pass a message for Sylvia to Philip (although Philip then betrays him). Once pressed into the navy, the capable and courageous Charlie buckles down and quickly rises to the rank of Captain. When he learns that Sylvia has married treacherous Philip in his forced absence, he simply finds himself another suitable woman (there are plenty of fish in the sea) and happily marries. Romantics, of course, will say that Charlie never really loved Sylvia, but a womanizer only comes back for his lady after such a long time if he truly cares for her. Naturally, this obvious fact is lost on muddle-headed Sylvia.

Things end badly for all the obtuse self-defeaters while Charlie Kinraid, as is only fair and reasonable, comes through with flying colours. Gaskell points the way to happier lives. Have courage. Recognize, and responsibly look after, your real interests. Use your head.

*Sylvia's Lovers* is a rich and rewarding historical novel that does not romanticize foolish behaviour.

I wanted to read it!
By Maeve Stormchild
I love this author. I've read at least 4 of her books. however, in this book, she tries so painfully hard to immerse the reader in the place and time that she renders the dialogue unreadable. It is so difficult to read that you might as well be trying to read a coded message! I did try to get through it, but in the end it was too much work to do.

Philip worships Sylvia, Sylvia worships Kinraid, and Kinraid worships himself...
By Mary Ann
Set in Whitby when it was a whaling town (many days before conservation!) during the Napoleonic wars, this is the story of the struggle between the two admirers of Sylvia Robson, daughter of smuggler-turned-farmer Daniel. She is loved by the serious minded Philip Hepburn and the dashing, lively 'Speksioneer' chief harpooner Charley Kinraid.

Philip has adored Sylvia for years, much to her disgust. When Sylvia hears the story of Charley Kinraid's being shot trying to defend his shipmates from a raid by one of the hated press gangs, he becomes a hero to her. They soon start to fall in love. Unlike Philip, he is depicted as being handsome and charming.

When Charley is forcibly impressed himself, he demands that Phllip deliver a message to Sylvia that he will be true. Philip, knowing Charley's reputation as a womaniser, decides not to pass on what he believes to be a worthless message. Soon, tragic circumstances force Sylvia to marry Philip.

But then Charley Kinraid returns...

The writing is lively, the descriptions vivid, and it is a compelling read overall, despite the notorious lapse into melodrama and improbable co-incidence in the third of the book.

**Spoiler Alert in the following analysis**

I was intrigued by the view of the critic T J Winnifrith that: 'Kinraid is eventually shown to be a shallow character, but the depiction of him is always so superficial that it is difficult to understand the depths of Sylvia's love for him'. I did find him very much a cardboard hero, devoid of the little human weaknesses that make a character endearing.

Besides, the evidence of his former heartless treatment of trusting young girls (Annie Coulson, Bessy Corney) Kinraid is also a prize opportunist. This unscrupulousness is illustrated by his meteoric naval career. He starts off by defending his fellow whalers against the press gang by shooting dead press gang members. Then, after he is press ganged into the navy, Kinraid is happy to accept promotion to the rank of captain. As has been demonstrated in research for the 'Hornblower' series, during the French Revolutionary Wars a naval captain must inevitably use press gangs to have enough crew to leave port. Kinraid unhesitatingly makes this moral compromise

Again, although it is true that Kinraid returns to Sylvia after three years, this is hardly evidence of a great devotion, given that as an impressed sailor and later in his years in a French prison, he would have no opportunity to find anyone else. Arriving back in England he does hurry to her, but on finding her unwilling to live with him outside marriage - he makes a vague promise that his admiral can somehow obtain a divorce for her - he leaves in a huff.

After this, he is clearly meant to discover that with his new status he can make a more advantageous marriage. In six months he is married to an heiress who has none of the qualities of fiery independence that he so admired in Sylvia herself, whom he swore to marry 'or none else'. No wonder the poor girl is disillusioned when she hears how quickly he has found comfort elsewhere.

This made me question whether Kinraid can be intended to be a truly admirable character, a 'hero' at all. Certainly, a minority of literary critics (Andrew Sanders, for instance) and general readers accept him uncritically as such. However, being familiar myself with Gaskell's highly moral stance. I was intrigued enough about this to read the available literary criticism on the topic. The majority of critics seem to consider that Kinraid is in fact meant to demonstrate that unscrupulousness, egotism, opportunism and emotional shallowness are frequent qualities in a dashing military hero of Kinraid's type, as for instance, argued by Graham Handley, Jane Spencer, Winifred Gerrin and others. Thus,I can see that if Kinraid is depicted as a Cardboard Hero without any endearing human weaknesses (having hollow legs for drink and womanising hardly count), so that you would never catch him being seasick like Horatio Hornblower or falling flat on his face during that hornpipe he does at the New Year's Eve Fete after drinking all night - then this is so that this whole concept of the Macho Hero can be called into question.

Hepburn would appear to be intended to be the (fatally flawed) hero of the novel who finally redeems himself from his former treachery by his selfless rescue of Kinraid at Acre and of his daughter from drowning. Still, given his self pity, his betrayal of Sylvia's trust and his unprepossessing characteristics, he is one it is hard to find sympathetic.

At the climatic scene of the novel when Sylvia and Hepburn are reconciled, he admits that his sin has been to make an idol of Sylvia, which has lead to his duplicity. As Sylvia had similarly made an idol out of Kinraid, the moral would appear to be - in line with Gaskell's Christian beliefs - how wrong it is to worship a faulty human being rather than the divine.

In this scene, when Hepburn begs for Sylvia's forgiveness for his lie, she berates herself for rejecting him in favour of the 'fickle and false' Kinraid. She blames herself bitterly and for her inability to forgive. She never recovers from her grief, dying before Bella is 'properly grown up'.

I felt myself that Sylvia had been betrayed by both men in their different ways, the one by his obsessive constancy, the other by his lack of it. But I felt too, that the problem was really one of the lack of opportunities open to her as a young girl in that era. On first meeting Kinraid, as Patsy Stoneman notes, Sylvia dreams, not of him, but of the adventures at sea that he represents. If the lively Sylvia had been able to go to sea and have such adventures herself instead of having to stay at home as a dutiful daughter carrying out domestic tasks, she would never have been so obsessed by Kinraid and his aura of excitement, or be obliged to marry Hepburn.

I go into this in more detail in my article on the book in the fword ezine - but it is against the rules to give a link here.

.

.

Summing up the story in a sentence: Hepburn worships Sylvia, and finds dishonour; Sylvia worships Kinraid, and finds disillusionment; Kinraid worships himself, and finds a wife who agrees with him and a career in the Royal Navy.

Adventures for the Gloomy that also Enjoy a bit of Cockney Goodness
By Tyler Standen
Bought this for my Kindle years back because it was free. I couldn't put the thing down I liked it so much. It felt good and I liked the characters, I felt like I was reading an adventure story like I used to back in gradeschool but with a more capable writer at the helm.

Speaking of, I hesitate to call him one since I know nobody else who knows him; but Quiller-Couch seems a hidden gem of a writer. Reading his other books like 'Brother Copas' I've taken a liking to the guy. He has verbiage, but it's wrotten so that I don't mind it. As soon as I get physical copies he'll be on my shelf next to Hemingway, Croshaw, Tolstoy and friends.

Splendid
By J R Zvesper
This novel is a splendid tapestry of intersecting lives, in which, while no one is perfect, even the bad guys benefit from the author’s generous comprehension and imagination. The author’s psychological insight is not time-bound, but this novel is “historical”: it is set in the past – mainly in the 1790s, in London and Philadelphia; and it is about how real political conflicts and changes are parts of the lives of the novel's fictional characters.

During the Gordon Riots in June 1780, when Sarah Battle was twelve, her life had already been radically changed by historical events: both her mother (who had enrolled her in school) and her only real friend (Ben Newton, a young artist who truly educated her) were killed by soldiers who had mistaken them for rioters. Sarah had to abandon her schooling and go to work in her father’s coffee house. For several years, her life was damaged and diminished. “Having lost her youth with her mother and Newton, Sarah became humourless, existing on a pulse of memory.”

We eagerly watch how Sarah goes about rebuilding her life, and we can hardly wait to see whether all ends well.

This book was published in the United Kingdom a few months before it was available in the United States, and several good reviews of the book have appeared on the UK amazon website.
