Page turner account of the Cornwallis battles with the Carolina Rebels
By BARB COWAN
James Fenimore Cooper meets Wm. Shakespear. Published 1902. Set in the last years of the Revolutionary War with events leading up to the Battle of Cowpens in the forests of Carolina. Think Mel Gibson - the Patriot. Masterful writing in 18th century prose. Violates every rule of don't use sing-song phrases the same same way Shakespere did. Lyndes' standard boy meets girl 1st page - (surprise) girl last page plot, with much brutal action and historical character development in the intervening 500 pages. Keep Wikipedia and Kindle's New Oxford Dictionary handy. A page turner. Attention engineers - Note most of Lynde's many Kindle novels (23) deal with authentic railroad engineering excitement in the Rockies at the turn of the century. Also page turners. Start with The Taming of Red Butte.

better than Romeo and Juliet :)
By Richard Chappell
Anthony Robeson has asked his long time friend, Miss Juliet Marcy, to help him renovate and decorate a lovely little cottage in time for his wedding to a different young lady. And she had to keep to a strict budget. Juliet reluctantly agrees to assist..with predictable results.

Published in 1902, the book says it is over 300 pages long, but it didn't seem that long. Maybe large printing on small pages? The contents page is not interactive. There are formating troubles. There is a rectangle with a question mark inside it for EVERY quotation mark and apostraphe. (It took awhile to ignore those annoying boxes.) And the page number shows up in the middle of the sentence.

I'm not sure about the title, though. What is Juliet indifferent about? I'll have to ponder that. If you have any suggestions about the title, I'd like hear them.

Beautifully written, clean and wholesome romance
By Eden
This was a lovely story. I had initially thought that it would take the whole book to tell the story of Juliet and Tony but it also included the stories of the people around them with Juliet and Tony at the center. Beautifully written, clean and wholesome romance. Highly recommended!

Bold Robin Hood and His Outlaw Band: Their Famous Exploits in Sherwood Forest, by Louis Rhead

The legend of Robin Hood was based on the career of a real outlaw who lived in the forests near Nottingham, England, in the last half of the 12th century. His character has become world famous and is the subject of hundreds of plays, novels, stories, and films. As a man of the people who was a partisan for the lower classes, he also became strongly associated with an anticlerical yet pious Christian attitude, an animosity toward the sheriff of Nottingham, and a special regard toward women, children, and the infirm.

The chief aspect of his fame was his penchant for robbing the undeserving rich and redistributing their money among the poor. His adversaries are forever being fooled by Robin's disguises, and they are driven to fury by his mocking wit and clever ruses for avoiding capture. Listen along as merry Robin Hood, Little John, Friar Tuck, and their outlaw band keep you entertained for many an exciting hour.

A childhood favorite that I'm still enjoying well into adulthood
By Aislynn Faire
Louis Rhead's version of Robin Hood has been a favorite of mine since childhood, when I first received it for Christmas. His illustrations enhance the old tales, and the language and tone he uses make the reader feel she has indeed been transported to Sherwood Forest during the reign of the unpopular Prince John.

For the Kindle edition, do be aware that this book, which is a large download, is in a photocopy/facsimile format, so you can't annotate it or enlarge the print or illustrations (at least on my Kindle I can't). The text is rather small because of this, but the publisher did this to preserve the original format and appearance. I like this Kindle edition because it looks just as the beautifully bound edition I owned as a child looked. I suggest getting the sample first to see if you can adjust to the smaller print. That's what I did, and decided it was worth the purchase because of the nostalgia it produces while I'm reading it.

It is not what I expected. The font doesn't fit the page because it is too small and it is crooked. Very disappointing.

Beauty Is a Wound, by Eka Kurniawan

The English-language debut of Indonesia's rising star. The epic novel Beauty Is a Wound combines history, satire, family tragedy, legend, humor, and romance in a sweeping polyphony.

The beautiful Indo prostitute Dewi Ayu and her four daughters are beset by incest, murder, bestiality, rape, insanity, monstrosity, and the often vengeful undead. Kurniawan's gleefully grotesque hyperbole functions as a scathing critique of his young nation's troubled past: the rapacious offhand greed of colonialism; the chaotic struggle for independence; the 1965 mass murders of perhaps a million "Communists", followed by three decades of Suharto's despotic rule.

Beauty Is a Wound astonishes from its opening line: "One afternoon on a weekend in May, Dewi Ayu rose from her grave after being dead for 21 years...." Drawing on local sources - folktales and the all-night shadow puppet plays, with their bawdy wit and epic scope - and inspired by Melville and Gogol, Kurniawan's distinctive voice brings something luscious yet astringent to contemporary literature.

Indonesia distilled to perfection.
By Pemakan Kangkung
I finished reading Beauty is a Wound (Cantik itu Luka translated by Annie Tucker) last week. I am stunned by how well this crazy mishmash of stories reflected the jumble that resides in an enigmatic file in my head labeled “Jawa”. All the professional reviews agree that this is an important, landmark, revolutionary, complex book. I want to explain WHY that is so true. Unless the reader understands the topic—Indonesia, it’s just another vague statement of greatness by reviewers. I would like to explain why this book is really hitting some reader’s nerves and why for others it might be inexplicable.
Kurniawan successfully put everything I know and feel about the former Dutch East Indies and today’s West Java in a blender. Then he poured out a tale that is representative of the inexplicable, tight hold Indonesia can have on someone with ties to the Mooi Indie. Reading Beauty is a Wound seemed like a visit to the homeland of my soul, and I am still struggling with just how to review this book for “non-Indonesia proficient” audiences. There is one word in Bahasa Indonesia that I keep repeating. It is “Rasa”. It means feel or taste, or sensation of. And Kurniawan has distilled the “Rasa” of Indonesia. So bear with me as I try to make sense of this momentous jumble in some logical fashion.
Translation: The translation is first rate. Nothing is lost in translation, so the book is quite easy to read. There are some Indonesian and Dutch words used for effect, but not enough to cause readers to really slow down. Some terms may confuse a western reader unfamiliar with Indonesia, but you can figure it out from context.
Story line: Like Lelaki Harimau (Man Tiger, also by Kurniawan), Beauty is Wound is really a simple ghost story, or perhaps several ghost stories! The main ghost is Dewi Ayu, (literally Goddess Pretty, and of course, an allegory for Mooi Indie, Dutch for the Beautiful Indies). Dewi Ayu, who refused to leave her Indonesian homeland when most Dutch bolted, rises from the grave years later in order to stop another ghost’s long-term curse upon her bastard progeny and their inappropriate husbands and the doomed next generation (all of whom are more allegories for sections of, or forces in, Indonesian society). The book can be read just for the story line.
Fractured Time Line: Readers need to learn the reasons for the curse and everyone’s back-story! And do they have back-stories! The interwoven Back Stories give you “The Political and Social History of Indonesia Since Colonial Times.” Kurniawan only lets you learn the important bits of the back-story as they become germane to the tale he is telling. So while the book does progress from Dutch Colonial times to contemporary Indonesia, the structure of the telling is not strictly chronological. We see the reasons for the interwoven time lines in the book when their past comes back to haunt someone. Literally.
Violence/Sex/Rape: Wow, there is plenty of sex, war and murder in this book. The violence, while graphic, seems to be exactly at the level I always imagined it to be from other sources and first person tales that I have heard from Indonesian and Dutch witnesses to these events. Indonesia is a huge, insanely diverse country that went through some extremely grim times in the last 100 years. (Watch The Year of Living Dangerously with Mel Gibson, if you want a quick primer in the feel of 1965 Indonesia.) Kurniawan is telling that multifaceted tale in the style of Indonesian folk tales and legends; the descriptions may not be factually correct, but you get the feel of the unsettled atmosphere that existed. All this happens in a coastal fictional locale called, Halimunda. (Halimun is the word for mist! So where this town actually lies is meant to be “foggy.”)
In an allegory where a country is a woman, and segments of that country other women, and “forces of evil” keep attacking that country or segments, you have many rape scenes. One could easily summarize major events in Indonesian history by saying, “Once again, Indonesia got screwed.” That’s what Kurniawan is doing. He’s not a crazy sex fiend. He is not advocating that men should treat women like that. He is using it to effect. I often want to start my own tale of Indonesia with the line, “From the day Columbus set off to locate Indonesia to steal her spices, Indonesia kept getting screwed….”
So to sum up, we have an important, epic, satirical, adult, historical fiction, ghost allegory rife with symbolism that approximates the History of the Republic of Indonesia.
Suspend all your disbelief, jettison all expectations and jump right in. The Water is Fine!
While I am screaming, “YES! I got to wallow mentally in what I have been studying for 40 years! The post-colonial period of the Republic of Indonesia,” some of you are asking, “Huh?”
To be honest, this is a book written for those familiar with (ok, really BEYOND familiar with, perhaps utterly steeped in) recent Indonesian history. Both POLITICAL and SOCIAL history during the latter half of the 20th Century and specifically those formative and determinative events that happened on the Island of Java since about 1940. The Japanese occupation, the three-way guerilla war for independence, the 1965 failed coup and its murderous anti-communist aftermath, and the perhaps less violent, but oppressive decades of the New Order, and then the 1990’s reformasi and recent history that perhaps brought an to the end of the curse…
Oh, and you might need a basic understanding of the major groups in Indonesian society. The Indos—mixed-race Dutch (or Japanese, or any other Eurasian mix). The PKI—Communist Party members or supporters (farmers, workers). Muslims—Intellectual liberals and/or fundamentalist, but rarely communist, and often protesting college students. Chinese-Indonesians—the Business Men perhaps allied to or exploited by Suharto. The Indonesian Military—was KNIL, then PETA, then ABRI, now TNI, has a “Dual Function” in that it actually created the state, and was very much involved in politics and business. And the criminal gangs or Preman—think Indonesian Mafia! Unity in Diversity! Yah!
If the last paragraph confused you, I would suggest reading a few Wikipedia pages on the Dutch East Indies and then the Republic of Indonesia from 1947 to the present before trying to read this book. Why? Because this complex book is an extended allegory for the birth of and struggle to mature of the Republic of Indonesia. If you want more understanding of recent Indonesian history, read Indonesian Politics Under Suharto: The Rise and Fall of the New Order, by Michael Vatikiotis.
There is something peculiar and cyclical in the history of Indonesia and Kurniawan maximizes that. The more you know about Indonesia and its people, the more you will understand and the more you will get the many jokes and scathing political comments in this book. But Beauty is a Wound will teach a reader new to Indonesia plenty about what really happened in Java after the Japanese invaded. And it is not a pretty picture.
Here’s the mystery about Indonesia, those people who love her, love her WITH all her faults, and she has plenty. There is still rural poverty and city slums, but there is incredible art and creativity, there are astounding natural riches, there was political suppression, but there is a high literacy rate and huge middle class, there are huge environmental issues, there is beauty beyond belief. That’s what makes Indonesia interesting and creates that “perasaan,” that weird sensation of Indonesia that Kurniawan captures. There is something addicting about Indonesia. Once you have been to Indonesia, most people want to go back. And I bet that is why Kurniawan made Dewi Ayu a prostitute that men wanted to return to. Read this book and you will also know this Beautiful Indonesia—one you will never learn about in any school.
But the real prize for reading this book is seeing just how Kurniawan actually puts all this together into a cohesive, entertaining tale!
And Yes, he does that. I read this thick book in a few days. I did not want to put it down. I am obsessed with Indonesia. I already know what Indo means, I already know what dog eater connotes, I know what Belanda and totok mean. But that’s because I had a Belanda stepfather who was born a totok in Bandung, West Java and the history of much of this book was his personal heartrending story as well. And the most significant other person is my life is a multilayered Orang Sunda from West Java. For an American, I am about as familiar with Indo-Dutch, Indos and Indonesians as I could possibly get without being born to it myself.
This book should be on the reading list at every University Asian Studies Program in the English Speaking World. This book tells all sides of these horrendous events. It is not a dry political textbook by some Western political academic looking down at Indonesia as a specimen of military oppression of democracy or as a petri dish of surprising economic development. It is not slanted toward the military, the PKI, or any one group. It is not apologizing or apologetics for any of those horrid events. It does not worry about who was right or wrong or if it was the fault of the Dutch, the Japanese, the Military, the PKI, the passive population, Sukarno, or Suharto. Indonesia and her people just struggle through 50 years of violence and social and creative suppression.
This book is important because it may mark the absolute end of the events it spears so well. The book’s existence may mean Indonesia has reached a point at which Indonesian civil society, democratic rule, and intellectual freedom and creativity are relatively safe from being screwed again.
Indonesia, and particularly for me, West Java where fictional Halimunda seems to be located, have some kind of magic power that permeates your soul and heart. Once she really gets her hooks in you, you emotionally live in that “perasaan” forever. If like Dewi Ayu, I was forced to consider leaving the “Indonesia” in my heart, I would, like her, answer, “I’m not going.”

An original and thought-provoking read
By Cloggie Downunder
“It’s true that oppressed people only have one tool of resistance: run amok. And if I have to tell you, revolution is nothing more than a collective running amok, organized by one particular party”

Beauty is a Wound is one of only two (so far) works by Indonesian journalist, writer and designer, Eka Kurniawan that have been translated into English. Twelve days after she gave birth to her fourth daughter (ironically named Beauty), Dewi Ayu, even at fifty-two still the most beautiful and desired prostitute in the Javan city of Halimunda, wrapped herself in a burial shroud and died. Twenty-one years later, she rose from grave, to the shock of the neighbourhood. Her reasons for doing so were not immediately apparent.

Kurniawan’s epic tale extends over almost a century and, against the backdrop of Dutch Colonial days and the Japanese wartime occupation through the struggles for independence to the modern day, tells the story of an extended Indonesian family: births, marriages, deaths and everything in between. There is plenty of humour and some sweet romance, but this family (like many in Indonesia) also suffers its share of tragedies, or perhaps even moreso. There is quite a lot of violence, again an accurate reflection of life in those times in that country: rapes, massacres, murders and beatings are described in a very matter-of-fact style.

Kurniawan’s tale demonstrates how corruption, propaganda, the power of petty despots, the impotence of the Police force and control of the media are all accepted aspects of everyday life in Indonesia. The attitude of those petty despots is summarised thus: “’Comrade Kliwon … is quite sympathetic and works hard to remedy the misfortunes of others….sometimes I think he’s the only person in this city who looks toward the future with hope.’ ‘That’s what communists are like. Pathetic people who don’t realise this world is destined to be the most rotten place imaginable. That’s the only reason God promised heaven, as a comfort to the wretched masses’”

This is a rambling story that is certainly reminiscent of Garcia Marquez and Rushdie, although, while Rushdie tends to never use two words when three or five will do, Kurniawan is much more succinct. Some elements of the supernatural feature: mainly ghosts and channelling of the dead, and of course, folklore and superstition are commonplace. The prose is quite basic, the dialogue often rather earthy: it is easy to read; a background knowledge of Indonesian history and politics is helpful, but not essential. Translation of this impressive work from the Indonesian has been achieved by Annie Tucker. An original and thought-provoking read. 4.5stars

Why does Kurniawan write about rape as a `natural' part of desire and courtship?? Is this an Indonesian or Muslim concept?
By Indiranda
Kurniawan is definitely a magical realist. I really enjoyed that quality of the work where realistic action can take place and then the fantastic element comes in as though it was usual. The story is also a sprawling saga over a few generations, mainly focussing on one woman's family.

My greatest shock and incredible unease is that he writes about the desire men feel for the female characters as rape. His male protagonists often look at a female character and want to `rape her' and this happens with quite a few of the relationships. They start off with rape and end up as something else. I wonder if this is a Muslim concept that doesn't translate comfortably into English. Our authors don't write about natural every day desire in such a brutal and violent way. If there is rape it is then a violent and negative act.

Typical of era
By Lois J. Rifner
Warning: because of the era in which it was set and in which it was written, there are significant racial issues with this book. That said, the quality of the writing is quite good. The plot is interesting, though typical of era. It was enjoyable. I picked for "a book set in my home town."

Love/hate and redemption
By MissMommy
Another story well told by McCutcheon. Life has a way of leading us where we don't intend or want to go, especially in the emerging frontier if the United States. This is no tale of the west, but a thrilling bit of human drama that plays out in a small town. What is truth and is it like beauty, in the eye of the beholder?

Very handy!
By Jamie
I ordered this book as a companion for an upcoming cross country trip. It has every restaurant, hotel and gas station listed at each exit. We have no idea where we will be each night as we are going in February and the weather is certainly a factor and will determine our route. Now we will be able to plan our meals and coffee breaks and find (and make reservations) at hotels along the way. I usually use my GPS to help find food and lodging but the GPS finds all close by restaurants and hotels, even those that we have already passed or are far off the road we are traveling on. It will be nice to look at a book that tells what is coming up not what we have left behind. It will be especially helpful for us to be able to plan in advance when we are traveling where there are very few exits.

Review
"The contemporary 'thriller' is in danger of becoming stereotyped . . . The resources of Wilkie Collins are, in comparison, inexhaustible."

Jessica Fletcher meets her match
By Francine Smith
I really enjoyed this book. It is the predecessor to a lot of the women detective books. Its about a woman who finds out her new husband was once accused of murder. She decides, against a great deal of advice including her husband's, to find evidence of his innocence. On the way, she meets a number of interesting and superbly drawn characters. The book does contain a good deal of Victorian romance and prejudice, however. I found the portrayal of a smart young woman as constantly overcome by her emotions a bit bothersome. Plus, I've never liked love stories and, basically, this is one.

Another Good One for Wilkie
By John Benintendi
I was not sure how I was going to like this book just finishing the Woman in White a short time ago. I knew going in that this was not one of his more famous works but I bought it since I have read five others written by him and I had so far very much liked all the others (Dead Secret, Haunted Hotel, Woman in White, No Name & The Moonstone). This book did not disappoint me and, in fact, I read it in a mere 4 days. This is a very easy read that keeps the reader guessing on "who done it".

The story is about Valeria Woodville (Macallan) who married a man that she finds out married her under an assumed name. She is bound and determined to find out why which she does depite being asked not to by her husband and his best friend. Once she finds out why her husband married her under an assumed name, (hint - he was accused of the murder of his first wife) - she then decides to prove that her husband is innocent. However, the evidence looks pretty damning that her husband actually did murder his first wife. Here is the point where she meets several different people and the puzzle begins to come together. By the end, I had thought of at least 4 different people that I thought had murdered his first wife.

I will not give away the end but it is not too surprising. However, this book was an easy read and an enjoyable read. If you like Wilkie's style of writing, you will like this book. This book is certainly not as good as the Woman in White, The Moonstone or No Name, but it is good nonetheless.

There are parts of this book that tend to show the prejudice against women during this time. Many times throughout the book, Valeria is asked what can a woman do that the (male) lawyers did not do during the trial. However, Wilkie gives Valeria the love and determination to find out the truth and she does so. The comments about women did not bother me for I knew this book was written in 1870's and the times were different.

If you like Wilkie and have read No Name, Moonstone and Woman in White, this is a good easy read by a good author. I look forward to reading more of his works.

How Would Orson Welles Scripted It?
By propertius
Without coming a "spoiler" it is necessary to be rather circumspect about the plot of the and by anticipating the ending or knowing it, the entire plot becomes to obvious in the matter motivations and clues. This mystery is very clearly a book that is infused with Victorian sensibilities and attitudes. This is the biggest problem for the modern reader to overcome and once this has been done it is really a intriguing and engaging mystery which touches upon murder, marriage, identity and the all encompassing question of motive. Think of it as "Jane Eyre" with barristers and police.

As with many illustrated classic stories, it is a story with unique characters and deals with hope, determination, compassion, and much more. In the opening preface, Robert Landsbury discovers the diary in a shed on a newly purchased estate in River Falls, Ohio and passes it along to his associates. The diary is faithfully preserved for today's reader. In it, the reader will discover that a ten-year-old mute girl, Tammy Wurtherington residing in the Wixby estate is the author. She loves to make dolls in a shed out in back of the house. She lives with Lord Wixby and Aunt May in a lavish estate at the edge of town. Aunt May teaches her to use a sewing machine and gives her a small one suited to size as a birthday gift. One day while constructing a toy soldier for her brother, Alfred the Mouse appears and is impressed with her ability to make doll outfits and reluctantly invites her to follow him to Kira if she will bring along the sewing machine. Tammy keeps a diary of her exploits in Kira which is ruled with an iron-hand by a pair of sorceresses, Catherine and Lucinda. Tammy and Alfred find their way through a fantasy underground transportation system that ends up with the pair mistakenly ending up in a wicker-basket in the middle of the ocean. Tammy finds her voice for the first time and Alfred explains that it is a “talking spell that allows virtually everyone to talk including the pesky (giant) flowers.” From this point you will discover many wonderful characters like Zeke, the Flying Opossum, and Cedric the Mongoose, who accompany Tammy on her journey to Capira to present a petition to return the kingdom to its former glory. You will meet the pirate, Captain Flynn, who loves to have his guests walk the plank and the loveable Kakuna villagers who's harvest is soon to be confiscated by the royal soldiers. But please beware of the Oxboar forest, where the evil Hoarggs reside otherwise you may end up in a stew-pot. Tammy has an adventure in which she learns to love all the strange living creatures she encounters in a magical land. Before she departs, all of Kira will fall in love with The Little Doll Girl who changed them forever and became a legend.

FIVE Stars. This book would make a wonderful viewing on TV! From the first page, this book had me captivated. Loved the illustrations. Found the beginning fascinating as to how the diary was found. I believe that this book is just as good as many of the children's classics. Recommended. Jeanette-Reader at Goodreads

VERY MAGICAL!
By HISRABLEMOUTH
Be prepared for a magical tale like no other!

Tammy Wurtherington wrote this joyous diary in 1883. In the preface we discover that it was recently discovered by Professor Landsbury in an old shed in his Ohio back yard. Tammy writes of her fascination with her aunt's sewing machine and begins making dolls in the shed.

What follows is a magical journey to Kira where she travels across the enchanted land in a quest to bring the kingdom to its former glory. Evil princesses, Lucinda and Catherine rule the kingdom with an iron hand that must be stopped.

Before the quest is over you will meet a rag-tag group of pirates, the Kukana elves, the korgoyle, and the terrible Hoarggs. This is a wonderland where flowers and animals talk quite freely. Plan to fall in love with Zeke the adorable opossum and Cedric the flying mongoose who become best friends with Tammy.

The diary is lavishly illustrated and will bring the story to life for the youngest and oldest of readers. One can easily compare this to Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Narnia, and other children's classics. Like the classics, it is magical and introduces the reader to a joyous world of imagination like no other.

In that this is one of eight books is a delight for this reader as one can only imagine what delights lie before us. Tammy Wurtherington is a joyful spirit that gives us hope as only she can do. Before the tale has come to the final pages we can see that a brave little girl with a big heart can make dreams come true.

the main character is a little girl (Tammy) who finds herself in a fantastic world with all kinds of creatures
By Amazon Customer
The back of the book states it's written in a manner similar to Alice in Wonderland or the Wizard of Oz. I would agree, the main character is a little girl (Tammy) who finds herself in a fantastic world with all kinds of creatures, some friendly and some evil. The events in the world of Kira give Tammy the chance to develop bravery, friendship, and leadership skills, which she had a harder time with in her real world. There are different versions of the books for different age levels. I do appreciate that the sorceresses and their evil spells are shown to be wrong, while the "good guys" go into battle after saying a prayer to God.

It is a magical tale like Narnia or Alice In Wonderland
By Diane K.
I found the story to be captivating. It is a magical tale like Narnia or Alice In Wonderland.

Tammy is mute and a very creative little girl. One day when working in her workshop she meets a talking mouse and follows him to Kira; a land where even the animals speak. The inhabitants of Kira are ruled by two evil Sorceresses, Catherine and Lucinda. Tammy listens to the stories of harsh taxes, little food and decides to start a journey to take a petition to the capital city on behalf of the citizens.

On her journey she meets all kinds of inhabitants from the Kakuna to the Hoargg. The whole kingdom is afraid of the Hoargg with rumors that they eat anyone that comes into their forest. Tammy, of course, doesn't believe they could be that bad and insists on going to meet them. After all, if they are to defeat Catherine and Lucinda all of the villages must be united.

What follows is a story that includes lessons on courage, compassion, not judging
things/people by how they look and more. The lessons are subtle but they are there.

This is a great book for parents to read with their young children. The lessons truly will benefit all and the story is magical.

I received this book free from the author through Library Thing for review purposes. Just a short note in addition to the review: Make sure when choosing the Little Girl Doll that you choose the age appropriate one. There is one for ages 8-12 (a bit shorter) and one for 12 to adult.

Joseph Was a Loving Father, by Vincent Iezzi

"...But while he thought on these things, behold the angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name JESUS. For he shall save his people from their sins..." Matt 1:20-21 With these words and this command, Joseph stepped into history with blind faith and little knowledge. Revelators say little of him; they slip over him. His humanity ignored. His obedience forgotten. His humility, his love, and his servitude were breezed over because he was a supporting actor. To humankind Joseph was nearly neglected, remembered only with a quick glance or a small prayer. Yet in his heavenly reward he undoubtedly is honored greatly, for we know that his God is a God of gratitude and One of great love. This is a book - a story - of Joseph the man and father.

The Ironclad Alibi: The Harrison Raines Civil War Mysteries, by Michael Kilian

Harrison Raines goes behind enemy lines to investigate a Confederate ship that could change the war.

It's been years since Harrison Raines set foot in Richmond. Although a proud Virginian, he fled the South before the Civil War, unable to bear the evil of slavery. In 1862, battles rage on all sides of the Confederate capital, but Raines is not here as a soldier - he comes as a spy. Union intelligence, led by the formidable Allen Pinkerton, has sent him to steal the plans for a rumored Confederate superweapon: a seagoing ship clad entirely in iron that could break the Union blockade and turn the war around.

Raines may be in home territory, but he is not at ease. In Richmond, they hang spies. While investigating the ship known as "the Monster", Raines' closest friend - a freed slave named Caesar Augustus - is arrested for murder. Saving Augustus from the gallows will take quick wit, daring, and influence at the highest levels of the Confederacy.

The Ironclad Alibi is the third book in the Harrison Raines Civil War Mysteries, but you may enjoy the series in any order.

More espionage than mystery
By David W. Nicholas
Our hero Harrison Raines (from Murder at Manassass and A Killing at Ball's Bluff) returns in a third installment, The Ironclad Alibi. Raines is a captain in the U.S. Secret Service whose father and brother serve in the Confederate army. In this installment, he's sent into the Confederate capitol to learn what he can about the "Monster." This turns out to be C.S.S. Virginia, the ironclad that almost broke the blockade around Virginia when it was first introduced in 1862.
Raines, however, arrives in Richmond and is almost immediately accosted by an old lover. When he rebuffs her (he loves an actress who is performing opposite John Wilkes Booth) she leaves, and later he finds her hanging from the ceiling in his room, naked. When Raines himself can provide an alibi (he was havning dinner with Confederate president Jefferson Davis at the time) the authorities arrest his erstwhile slave, Caesar Augustus, and announce that they will hang him soon.
Much of the rest of the plot consists of Raines running around Richmond frantically waving papers and passes he has from Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis, trying to get Caesar Augustus freed or at least reprieved. There is a mystery (how did the hanged woman come to be in Raines room, and why?) but it's only intermittently dealt with. And of course the spying on the Confederate ironclad, though it's the reason for his presence in Richmond, is only briefly an issue.
There are some good points to the book. Elizabeth "Crazy Bet" van Lew gets a good cameo (she was a real historical figure, an abolitionist who lived out the war in Richmond and was the Union's most successful spy) and both Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee make brief appearances, along with several other minor characters of the Civil War. The plot, however, is somewhat obscure and not that entertaining. I did enjoy the atmosphere, and when the author gets to the actual battle of Hampton Roads, the action speeds up. I would recommend this book to Civil War buffs more than mystery fans.

The Prodigal Returns
By Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers
Harrison Raines, late of the Federal City, has returned to Richmond. While pretending to have come home, he's really on assignment for Abraham Lincoln, finding out all he can about "The Monster," the recently captured USS Merrimack. He is horrified to learn that it is being made into an ironclad ship which will decimate the rest of the Union naval fleet.
The trip home also includes a chance meeting with Arabella Mills, Harry's first love. Now married, her husband is in charge of the Merrimack. But when she turns up dead in Harry's hotel room, it's Harry's former slave and friend Caesar Augustus who is accused of the crime and put on a fast track to execution. Now Harry must get his information back to Lincoln in time to do some good while also finding the evidence to clear his friend, which is going to be hard in a city where he doesn't know who to trust.
This series is wonderful for Civil War buffs, historical fiction fans, and mystery lovers. Richmond, circa 1862 came alive to me as I was reading, and I've learned more about the events of the Civil War from this series then I remembered from school. Harry does seem to have an impressive list of acquaintances (Lincoln, Davis, and Lee for example), but meeting them allows us to get a complete view of the war and events in a way we couldn't otherwise. Because Harry's returned to Virginia for this book, we also get a picture of the emotional battle waged by families on the other side of the issue.
The mystery in this book is strong. I had no clue where what the big picture was until the end, although I did figure a couple plot points out before hand. Seems everyone has something to hide, and it's not what I was thinking, that's for sure.
Because of the progressive nature of this series, it's best to start with the first book, MURDER AT MANASSAS, especially since this book discusses the outcome of that one. If you are at all interested in this dark time in US history, I highly recommend this series.
