A Greyhound bus ride through America and a subsequent stay in New Orleans compels Victor Stavski to reconsider everything he has stood for as a fanatical England supporter. With the Union Jack caped over his bull-neck shoulders and the Cross of St. George emblazoned down his back, Stavski and his mates tried initially to get the passengers riled up with some pre-match chanting for the upcoming England v. USA match. To his surprise, the Americans on board the bus and those he met in the cities along the way had no partisan interest in international soccer and, if anything, they began to chant for England. The Americans love England. But Victor Stavski discovers during this American odyssey that his real love is not for England after all, but for America and that it began with the music and TV images coming out of America that he experienced as a child.

Review
"...A masterful tour de force with astute sociocultural, historical, psychological and even musical insights."
-- Tressa Davey, professional psychologist
"..."A Soccer Hooligan in America" is an exploration of a Brit's discovery of our egalitarian America, or perhaps a discourse of American values, or just perhaps, a British hooligan's reeducation of a not-so-merry England."

A UNIQUE MUST-READ NOVEL
By Mrs. T. Davey
What happens to our antihero Vic Stavski, an English soccer hooligan, as he embarks on his greyhound bus trip across America with his entourage of thugs boldly looking for trouble en route?
In this ingenious picaresque-style novel, C-M Krawczyk skilfully captures Vic’s journey as he discovers America and the transformative possibilities that an egalitarian society represents. On his journey, Vic meets a dazzling cast of well-drawn characters and finds meaning and connection in each of these encounters. As a result, he is gradually awakened to the effect on his own life of being born into a society that is highly influenced by the concept of social class. The tale is relayed in the narrator’s comic and aphoristic fashion and during the journey Vic finally begins to question his life.
What happens next is totally riveting….
C-M Krawczyk’s narrative style is the use of a gritty vernacular which gives the novel its unique feel. It also perfectly reflects the narrator’s lack of formal education combined with his highly intelligent and often hilarious satirical observations that send up the whole gamut of linguistic and cultural differences, social classes and human foibles. However, for all its laugh out loud moments, C-M Krawczyk uses his comic gifts without ever compromising the story’s underlying poignancy that is both powerful and utterly gripping.
Overall, the writing is superb and this is a masterful tour de force with astute sociocultural, historical, philosophical and even musical insights. In the end, we care deeply about what happens to Vic and fall in love with all the quirky characters that were brought to life along the way in this compelling, wise and thoughtful novel.
This book is quite simply a mighty fine read!

A brilliant journey of discovery!
By Sam
I simply loved this book. Coming from England myself, and with a long standing fondness for America, I was instantly drawn to the journey that Vic Stavsky found himself on as he took his love of English football to America. I was curious how the associated dirty thuggery of football hollliganism would be greeted in the land where purity and perfection seems to prevail. To my mind, the dichotomy was going to be there from the outset. And I wasn't disappointed. Indeed, what I got was far more.
A 'Football Hooligan in America' is a gripping tale of contrasts. A very personal narrative that takes a gritty and dry humour from the narrator to the land of the 'Yankee Doodle Dandies'. Touchingly thoughtful and yet at times outrageously funny; it's this clever and unique style that really makes the work of this author so unique. Not afraid to make generalisations, the narrator's observations are refreshingly untempered, whether he is referring to an attack 'by the enamel teeth' of McDonalds and it's 'tsunami of happiness', or the contrasts within his homeland (England) between 'them and us'. Indeed it is the freedom and escape from the barriers of social class that draws Vic deeper and deeper into America, and the true journey that I feel this novel is really about. Vic, in his anonymous nothingness back in 'the land of inequality', finds comfort in the equality gained from being called 'sir' in America... along with the rest of McDonald's customers..and along with the rest of America. In a land where everybody is treated with equality, Vic becomes someone; moreover, he discovers himself.
So while at its tips, there is fun and humour, I feel the heart of this novel is routed in thought provoking intelligence, and not without frequent reference back to historical fact.
One last thing to add. While this journey is very much about the central character 'vic' - and it's he who the reader is compelled to grow understanding and warmth for - it's also the narrator who intrigues me. We learn of his character through hints and observations of others and what I'd love to see Krawczyk do next is resume a story with Vic revealed in the first person..with whatever contrast that reveals!
