Original and entertaining second installment in the trilogy
By Veronica Lynn Pit Bull
This review contains minor spoilers.

Instead of immediately picking up where The Demon of Darkling Reach (The Black Prince Trilogy Book 1)left off, "The White Queen" goes back to the very beginning and tells the tale of how the original Tristan came to be possessed by the demon and in doing so paints a very vivid picture of what a demon is and isn't in this world.

"When a demon first possessed a human host, it took the initial step in a difficult and complex process that ultimately ended with the creation of a hybrid: a half-human, half-demon capable of regenerating and maintaining it's form almost indefinitely."

Demons being another species from another plane, are not inherently evil. The demon/Tristan hybrid wanted, if not love; then companionship and understanding from an accepting partner. And while demons may think more in terms of "need" and "crave" instead of love; they also mate for life.

"So long as it fed. The man-demon did not age as mortals understood the term, although with time it could learn to grow and adapt".

Which is where a beautiful love story between two emotionally isolated individuals, neither of whom fit neatly into the world around them; gets a little sticky...the whole "feeding" part.

As Isla said in "The Demon of Darkling Reach", "Lions hunt, and wolves, and I eat meat". But there's no getting around the moral ambiguity of Tristan's need for the "other" other white meat. Nor about what it says about Isla that she is willing to become complicit in her condoning of this need.

Towards the end Isla finds herself questioning what her connection to Tristan will ultimately entail:

"But - was it right? Was it moral? She didn't know. And then an unwelcome voice spoke from somewhere deep inside her mind: had killing Alice been right or moral? Alice, whose only
crime had been a fascination with a rich and handsome man".

At about the 30% mark "The White Queen" picks up with Isla on her wedding journey north. As the first third of the story was a study of Tristan's character; here we delve into Isla's nature further: her thoughts, her relationships with others and her past experiences. Isla is a fascinating character. I've always been a fan of the morally ambiguous hero; but it's rare to find a well written, plausible morally ambiguous heroine. Isla acknowledges all of what Tristan is and accepts her desire and choice to be with him without sugar coating it.

Along the journey Isla gains a clearer understanding of her family and she doesn't apologize for standing up for herself when she realizes their true nature. Isla grows into a woman who
will fight back instead of finding virtue in taking the higher road and turning the other cheek (and I like that about her).

Rowena: "You've changed"
Isla: "No I haven't"
Rowena: "Yes you have. You've grown cold"
Isla: "No, I've just grown up".
Rowena: "You were never cruel"
Isla: "You were never evil".
Rowena paused. "Now you're both".
Isla spoke without turning. "Yes, perhaps I am."

Left alone with primarily her thoughts for companionship on the arduous journey, she starts getting cold feet, questioning Tristan's motives and wondering if she didn't just jump at the first opportunity to escape an oppressive existence - at the same time she also realizes that there is no going back.

My only disappointment with "The White Queen" is that Tristan and Isla aren't reunited until the last 30% of the story. Initially there is a bit of tension as they are both insecure for their own reasons, but they resolve their issues quickly and Tristan makes it known he intends to give Isla a heck of a wedding gift:

"There is something I want from you. Something beyond a mere joining of the flesh".
"Will it...hurt me"?
"It will..." He paused, considering the term. Almost tasting it. "It will hurt, yes. But not hurt you. I would never hurt you".

As the story ends, the final installment in the trilogy is beautifully set up: Hart has sold his soul, Rose in on the menu, Isla is about to learn she is much more than she thought and always was, Tristan and Father Justin are cultivating a whole new relationship and one heck of a storm is coming!!!!

A Facisnating Literary Experience
By PURPLE JEWELS
The White Queen was an utterly captivating installment in an astoundingly fascinating Series. I gave this addition to the Series 5 stars rather than 4 because I realized or surmised that the author's relentless inclusion of extensive descriptions of the inane, mundane and monotonous stems not from a desire to bore me to tears or from a refusal to realize the need for professional editing but rather she is striving to build a world that the reader can see, taste, hear and feel. Her approach sort of reminds me of the type of extensive "world building" for which Tolkien is famous. Now, before all you Tolkien devotees become horrified or incest thinking that I am comparing this book or this Series to the literary mastery of the "Lord of the Rings", which I've read and adore, I am not. What I'm saying is that in this sub-genre, historical paranormal romance, through an abundance of words, descriptions and, yes, minute details, this author has created a world which I can readily envision and characters who feel real. Do I find this abundance of dialogue and descriptions periodically irritating and tedious? Yes, but that's primarily because "I" tend to be easily bored and, thus, can be an impatient reader. My solution for the latter both in reading this book and it's predecessor has been to skip passages. Now, however, I regret having given way to my impatience b/c I now suspect that I may have deprived myself of the full richness of this literary experience. With this new insight into and appreciation for what I now believe to be the author's goal in providing so many mundane descriptions and details, arguably, the 1st book may have deserved 5 stars rather than the 4 that I gave it. However, since my review honestly reflects my reactions immediately after reading the book I think that my comments and rating remain appropriate regardless of this new revelation.

Overall this book was outstanding and I hope that the final book will be available soon. I also long for Isla and Tristan to have a simply wicked HEA and, frankly, I will be quite miffed if they do not! A more straight forward listing of pros and cons are as follows:

Pros:
1. An original, imaginative and superb historical, paranormal romance; three-dimensional
characters; great supporting characters;
2. There's Tristan, (lol) action, adventure, suspense, romance, mystery, magic, likable and
believable characterizations, a touch of dark & light humor and a profound commentary on
and examination of familial interrelationships,
3. Chapters 1-18 consist of an intriguing and exciting account of Tristan past;
4. Father Justin receives even more punishment for what he did to Isla;
5. Tristan is in rare form;
6. The variety of emotional responses this story elicits;
7. Isla travels to the North;
8. The reader is given a rare but enlightening glimpse into Hart's observations, thoughts,
feelings;
9. Isla's sacrifice;
10. A story with the type of haunting and thought provoking sentiments that among other things
makes one wonder whether the author shares any of the views of her character or rather
they arose solely from her imagination;
11. An incredibly low price;
12. Very few typos.

Cons:
This is a Series in which the books end in cliff hangers. The books individually do not make a rewarding stand alone read. Book 1 should be read before this book. (I don't personally consider this a con but some potential readers might.)

1. Although totally understandable, believable and logical, Isla's droning on and on mentally
regarding whether she'd made the wrong choice grated my nerves a bit;
2. The pace of the story is a bit slow, nevertheless, it is appropriate for what the author is
trying to achieve and convey;
3. I was disappointed and shocked that this author who throughout this series has
painstakingly provided a myriad of descriptions and details failed to describe exactly how
that awful priest was killed in the woods or glade of Caer Addanc.
4. Some will find the author's writing style verbose and her descriptions of the mundane
superfluous or irritating or tedious and/or periodically boring. Impatient readers,
such as myself, will probably skip passages, but I would advise, if possible, forge thru each
and every line b/c by doing so I believe that you will have an even richer literary
experience than I did. In fact, I'm thinking about rereading this book shortly b/c I'm just
not ready to leave the world of the Black Prince and b/c the 3rd book isn't available yet.

A fascinating literary experience, that includes Tristan, at an unbelievable price, of course, I recommend it!

Great but not quite as much as the first.
By Gabrielle
Just finished within a twenty four hour span. Work made it hard to finish sooner. I really find myself enjoying this author's work. The only issue was that it felt as if something was missing in this one. I'm not quite sure what but it was good regardless. the characters are consistent, the scenes painted in a manner worthy of Tolkien (though, perhaps, less wordy), and the interactions are "human" and believable. Whomever compared this to Twilight has no sympathy on my end. At all. This is not fluffy. This is not cute. (...Ok maybe it's got that dark cute going for it. Leave me alone.) This is about a demon and a woman. A demon with no pretense of otherwise. (If I see one more whiny note about gore I will likely have to shove that fact of "DEMON" down some poor soul's gullet.)
