Louisiana is America’s booming frontier when Louie LaBarre makes New Orleans his base for steamboat river trade, a new bank, and grand sugar plantations. Domineering King Cameron launches military, political and legal attacks against Louie. Their rivalry is intense, but only one titan will control the rich cotton trade and decide the fate of slavery. Adjacent to New Orleans, the Louisiana coastal region before ...
By William Parker
Adjacent to New Orleans, the Louisiana coastal region before 1850 provides the main setting for this superbly crafted historical novel. Obscure, but real, places such as Barataria Bay and the Atchafalaya River afford venues for pirates and smugglers, for ruthless, slave-trading merchants, and at times for exotic romance. The LaBarre family, with French Canadian and African-American connections, becomes an important force in this setting.

The population and economy of the US were expanding during most of the early 19th century. New Orleans was well-positioned to benefit from this via ocean shipping and also by river trade carried by steamboats. There was wide demand for the products of trade based on sugar, tobacco, and cotton. Regrettably, this economic growth depended on slavery and on the forcible removal of American Indian communities, both of which gave rise to continual personal tragedies and to political conflicts. Author Richard Fitchen signals this with the title "Justice on Trial", and he gives an unflinching portrayal of the ways justice was denied.

Cuba, then controlled by Spain, was one of the important trading partners of the US and was having its own problems of political independence, national identity, and slavery. There was strong American interest in Cuba decades before the Spanish-American War of 1898, and there were even proposals for the US to purchase and annex Cuba. This contributed to the international pressures of the era, as shown in the novel.

Fitchen contributes his usual subtle perceptions of the complex politics and personalities of the period. The result is a work that is more intricate and accurate than "Gone With the Wind", for example, and that offers new perspectives for reading in American history.

The struggle to “establish justice” in antebellum America!
By Boeing Driver
With the publication of JUSTICE ON TRIAL: LOUIE’S AMERICA, readers now have the first four of Richard Fitchen’s monumental five-volume American saga. Each book headlines a major protagonist working through pivotal changes in America’s national experience.

The Saga begins with STAIRCASE TO LIBERTY: JOSEPH’S AMERICA (later colonial years through
independence and early republic) and continues with JUSTICE ON TRIAL: LOUIE’S AMERICA
(first half of the nineteenth century), UNITED BY COVENANT: BEN’S AMERICA (Civil War to turn
of the twentieth century), and REPUBLIC IN TRIUMPH: JESSIE’S AMERICA (the world wars
through Kennedy).

As with his other volumes, in JUSTICE the author masterfully combines historical figures with fictional characters (both nefarious and righteous!) The main themes of JUSTICE are the growth of American identity—the United States of enterprising, innovative, and equality-loving people—all stirred in the crucible of change with the lingering malady of that “peculiar institution” AKA slavery.

After enjoying this four-volume repast the eager reader can then look forward to the dessert—the eagerly anticipated publication of Fitchen’s fifth and final work in the series that will bring the saga to the present day.
