A pleasant story of old school heroes & villains

"Black Star's Campaign" is the follow-up to "The Black Star, A Detective Story." The Black Star is a super crook of great cleverness and organizational skills, a laudable but improbable aversion to violence, and a taste for competition. His nemesis is amateur adventurer Roger Verbeck, somewhat less clever, a bit more athletic but otherwise much the same in personality. The story is well-written in the style of pulp novels of the 1920s by Johnston McCulley, well-known for his invention of Zorro. There's a lot of action and not much character development. This is just as well in my opinion; it keeps the story lean and gives the reader more to imagine. The chief drawback from a modern reader's perspective is the inability of Verbeck - and the police - to learn from experience. In this and the previous novel, Verbeck, his henchman Muggs, and dozens of guards and policemen are overcome by clouds of knockout gas from "vapor guns" carried by the Black Star's minions time after time but take absolutely no precautions to avoid repetitions except for (unsuccessfully) trying to hold their breaths. They also tend to spend a lot of time sitting or standing with their backs towards room doors and unexplored closets, making it easy for them to be surprised by the villains. Fortunately for the reader, the cleverness and jocular good spirits of the villain provide most of the reading fun. Make no mistake, the Black Star is no Robin Hood and deserves to be caught -- but only after a long and satisfying chase.

A Fun Read

Black Star’s Campaign by Johnston McCulley (1919). Roger Verbeck and his rough-and-tumble sidekick, Muggs, oppose Black Star, the super criminal. Muggs had been a criminal in France until Verbeck rescued him and took him under his wing. Now the man is totally dedicated to his boss. Black Star, no name associated with the super criminal, has strict principals and will not use violence, but enjoys the competition between he and Verbeck. There is little characterization other than that, but Black Star appears much more intelligent than his enemy or the police, and only fails by a slip up from a subordinate. This is a typical Johnston McCulley character. The costumed criminal is a likable enough rogue, and outwits the police at every turn. There were some scenes in the story that reflected the costumed heroes a decade later. As with McCulley’s Rollicking Rogue, The Black Star had a lot of similarities to the future Captain Satan and his men. Verbeck stops Muggs from committing suicide from a bridge, and employs him like The Shadow did with Harry Vincent. The Black Star also has the habit of ordering his men to “Report!” (A habit of The Shadow a decade later). Another oddity is the use of an autogiro – though not named – in the story, and this was 1919, remember. It was a fun story, but Verbeck and the police seemed very inept, and the reader roots for the criminal rogue. Still, a fun read.
