Review
ReviewIn Until My Name Is Known, the Almighty sets out to reveal Himself to mankind. He takes both the Egyptians and the Hebrews from "Who is this God, that I should obey?" to "Surely this is the finger of God!" The great I Am clearly unveils His character, but wisely allows each one to choose whether or not they will honor His supremacy. Reading this account helped me step out of modern America into Egypt, 2450 B.C. and brought the Biblical Exodus to life. I think you, like me, will be uniquely compelled to view God through the eyes of the story characters as they stand in awe of His mighty miracles, wonder at His patient persistence, and grapple with questions about fairness and faith. I want to thank the author for the privilege of reviewing her book--I enjoyed it enough that I chose to purchase my own copy rather than accept the complimentary reviewer's copy.Titania PorterFlorida
Review of Until My Name is Known by Sonya Contreras
God moves before all of humanity all of the time. Some acknowledge that fact; some do not. Read Until My Name Is Know to get a glimpse of the varied responses to the same events and the same God... and then ponder your response - and the implications of that response - to the same God today. I enjoyed the narrative woven from the biblical, historical, and archaeological gleanings. Even though I received nothing more than a free copy of this book to do this review, it was well worth my time to again be reminded that God's ways of doing things are not always correctly interpreted by us humans. From the Author
I desired to weave the biblical account with archaeological and historical records to tell the story of the Hebrew exodus from Egypt. The timing of the Exodus is essential to biblical chronology. Until recently, the wrong date was assigned. This wrong date kept archeology from substantiating the biblical record. Many scholars doubted the reliability of the Bible because the stories could not be proven. If Egypt was destroyed by ten plagues, history should show it. If six million people wandered in the desert, archeology should demonstrate it, but it could not. People doubted the Bible.Dr. Gerald E. Aardsm'a date of 2450 BC. for the Exodus brings cohesiveness to the biblical and archeological accounts. No historian could explain why the Old Kingdom of Egypt disappeared without a trace. Aardsma's research answers why. Archaeologists found an unknown people wandering the desert during this time. The Exodus of the Israelites explains them. Aardsma's research gives answers. Several editors have corrected my capitalization of God and the pronouns for Him. According to the current standard, God's pronouns, (i.e. Who, His, He) and His body parts (i.e. hand, finger) should not be capitalized. When those words have referred to little gods, I honor that standard. But for the sake of respect for God, as well as clarity in the text, I have chosen to capitalize them regardless of the standard. I trust the reader was not overwhelmed by the 'mistake' of this choice. The Bible tells the story in Exodus 1-15. Read it for yourself and see God better through it.

Uve SteinmannUntil My Name is Known gives a clear and compelling picture of God's movement in the Old Kingdom of Egypt with the return of Moses to Egypt as God's faithful messenger and servant. The story unfolds as Moses faces Pharaoh with God's instructions to " Let My people go!".The author gives readers insights into the lives and thoughts of both Egyptians and Hebrews as each of the richly drawn characters respond to God's power evidenced in the various plagues. Some struggle against the One True God and some find their faith in His love growing deeper.Every reader will find both comfort and challenges as the results of the plagues affect lives of individuals and the nation of Egypt. As we learn more about God, will we obey, or will we rebel? This question pervades the book -- and each of our lives.I have read scores of Christian fiction books and this is the first clear instance of God Himself being the main character of the work.If you are fascinated by history --- read it. If you want to spend hours experiencing life in Old Egypt--- read it. If you want to know more about the Holy God -- read it!!!I received no payment for this review except a free book ( which I will treasure).Michele Evans Fresno California

Gripping and providing a different view of Exodus
By S.F.
Reading, "Until My Name is Known" I was really impressed by the level of commitment Sonya has shown the Book of Exodus and although this is a fictional re-telling of what could have happen, the author shows a love and desire to bring to this book, research and a sense of authenticity to bring the readers into this re-telling of Moses, not from when he started out as a baby, but as an adult and facing a task that he felt at the time,he wasn't the right person.
Even at the end, there was an inclusion of a map, glossary, and amazing list of books to reference and throughout the story itself, I felt like Sonya really brought the story of Moses and the Exodus to life that toward the end, I found myself anxiously waiting for book two to see how she will continue this series.
The biggest thing to highlight is the fact Sonya shows respect to those who are familiar with Exodus and the story of Moses.
There are gentle nods throughout the book that makes this, even though its a fictional re-telling of the book of Exodus, a fictional story that is biblical sound.
"Until My Name is Known" is a captivating read and one quickly gets lost into the rounded out character development without the background either overpowering or getting lost in the story development.
Instead, there is a wonderful character development and even if you know the story of Moses by heart, this will not only bring a fresh outlook to this known biblical story.
The story changes smoothly. Character interactions are realistic for what could be expected and there are glimpses of both the love Sonya has for the story, but also for the characters as the story progresses to it's ending.
I couldn't help, but wonder, as the story concluded, if there was study guide that could go with this and even if there wasn't one, just transitioning from this to studying the Book of Exodus itself would make this a great addition for a personal or group bible/book study.
Sonya capture the time and the culture that "Until My Name is Known" and along with it, create that much love anticipation for the next book in the series.
This is a book that is well worth the time and investment to read once, maybe twice, or even more than several times.

Disappointing Read
By Marjorie Vawter
Until My Name Is Known by Sonya Contreras is a well-researched biblical fiction, retelling the story of Moses’s call to set God’s people free from slavery in Egypt. The events of this first book in a series covers the burning bush through the crossing of the Red Sea and the Egyptian nation’s destruction when the water closed over the army following the Israelites. While the story is historically accurate, I had trouble getting into it because of the author’s lack of sentence structure variation, which is an indication of telling rather than showing. Also, several times through the book, I questioned the choice of POV character. For example, instead of experiencing the burning bush through Moses’s eyes and ears, we read of it after the fact through Zipporah’s extreme bias against her husband’s God. Instead of making the characters come alive and be “real,” these POV choices in most cases made them wooden and static. Finally, as a Christian and a strong proponent of God’s Word and its importance in the life of the believer, I like to see a strong spiritual thread in fiction. But it needs to be such an integral part of the story that it flows naturally out of the characters themselves. I don’t need to be hit over the head with the “theme” over and over again. In Until My Name Is Known, the theme of God's name being known throughout the world is inherent in the biblical story and in Moses's life, so having it spelled out for the reader, even to the very end, is redundant and frankly insults the reader's intelligence. As a freelance editor who has worked for several traditional CBA publishers, I couldn't help noticing several technical issues with the typesetting, mostly with word breaks and capitalization choices that could easily have been avoided by checking with the industry-standard dictionary and style manuals. However, once I acknowledged these deterrents to reading the story for enjoyment, I was able to skim through the book, appreciating the author's research and how she wove it into a fictional account that is accurate to the Scripture and the time in history.

The Exodus story
By Carole Jarvis
Until My Name Is Known is a work of biblical fiction, spanning the time from the call of Moses at the burning bush to when the Israelites stand on the other side of the Red Sea. Sonya is passionate about retelling the Exodus story in a fresh way, through a variety of Egyptian and Hebrew characters, and showing God's faithfulness throughout. While it didn't quite pull me in as a work of fiction, there were parts that I did enjoy.
Sonya gives much attention to historical detail and the archeological influence adds a fresh touch. It was interesting to think what it might have been like to be the wife or mother of a firstborn son. Zipporah gives voice to man's questioning of God as she struggles with a God who would require such a mission from her husband. And then there's the age-old problem of pain and suffering, reflected in Aaron's question, "Will anyone seek God, if he doesn't know he needs God?"
One reminder of God's faithfulness is something that I haven't often thought about, and that's the carrying of Joseph's bones out of Egypt. "God heard the desire of a man and granted it four hundred and twenty years later. "
Several themes are woven through the framework of this book - that there is but one true God and He is more powerful than any god of man, the need to totally trust God - but the overarching theme is God's constant faithfulness. I need and welcome constant reminders of these aspects of God's nature.
The series continues with book #2, I Have Called You by Name. I believe that fans of biblical fiction rich in historical and archaeological detail would enjoy this book.
