New Orleans Confidential: Lucien Caye Private Eye Stories, by O'Neil De Noux

Come prowl the lonely, sometimes violent streets of American's most exotic city, the city that care forgot, New Orleans, with a lone-wolf private-eye named Lucien Caye. Unlike most 40s PIs, Caye rarely drinks, doesn't smoke or wear a hat (it messes up his hair). He's six feet tall with wavy, dark brown hair and standard-issue Mediterranean-brown eyes, a sly smile and a clever mind that often gets him into trouble. Caye lives and works in the run-down New Orleans French Quarter of the late 1940s. He has a weakness for women, children and fellow World War II veterans, down on their luck. He knows how to make a decent living but often finds himself working pro-bono - in one case working to find a little girl's missing cat, in another searching for a boy's runaway father and in yet another, canvassing the Quarter for the child who wrote a note to Santa Claus, asking Santa to take him to live with the angels so his mother and father didn't have to buy food for him anymore. They don't have any money. Murder is often the name of the game and Caye sometimes leaves town in pursuit of the truth, usually aiding a pretty woman in need of help, in more ways than one. Unfortunately, the truth is often ugly, often dangerous and usually resides on the loneliest part of town.

Good collection of shorts.
By John A. Brissette
This is a collection of short stories. That said it is a little tough to rate/review as it is technically several different pieces in one collection. The stores are entertaining, move well, and the characters are fun if at times predictable. Having family from Louisiana and being a frequent visitor to New Orleans which is a cultural second home, I bought this book because of the setting. Nola is a perfect setting, exotic, old, devil may care and Denoux does it very very well. Only criticisms are his tendency to get too far into the erotica end of the spectrum for my taste and that because this is a collection of shorts you end up reading the repetitive character development lines over and over again in each story so it gets a bit redundant that the main doesn't wear hats and why, that he served in Europe in the war and where, etc. otherwise it's completely entertaining which is the point of this genre.

Woman Pleaser
By Lydia Xiao
I have to thank a Louisiana State Trooper for alerting me to this book, which has just about everything that'll please a woman reader like me.

If you're in a maternal mood, then private detective Lucien Caye is very good with kids, working cases for them pro-bono. If you're in a frisky mood, then this is definitely your kind of man. Lucien is a turn-on as he helps women with their problems in more ways than one. If you're in the mood for a good detective story, check out "Hard Rain," a genuine murder mystery. If you're in the mood for a little romance, there's "Expect Consequences."

I'm sure men will see Lucien Caye as a man's man, but I really think he's a woman's man. These stories seem to have everything: mystery, intrigue, sex, violence, love, even swamp monsters.

It is a great book about New Orleans.

I just did not care for most of the stories, and honestly, I didn't finish this book because I found many parts to be offensive.

Review
“What a treat to have another Gilman novel—until now largely ignored—available. We are indebted to Duke University Press for publishing it as a separate piece and to Dana Seitler for her provocative and stimulating introduction. The Crux is in many ways a period piece embodying what today seems outmoded and sometimes outrageous views. Oddly, these same views are also startlingly and wickedly relevant today.”—Ann J. Lane, author of To Herland and Beyond: The Life and Work of Charlotte Perkins Gilman

“With reproductive technologies at the center of feminist, medical, and national debate, The Crux offers a fascinating historical perspective on the relationship of reproduction and nationalism. Dana Seitler's introduction offers a useful context in which to read Charlotte Perkins Gilman's quirky, biology-based feminism, her depiction of a women's community in the west, and, generally, the relationship between fiction-writing and the fashioning of gender roles that fueled Gilman's particular brand of activism.”—Priscilla Wald, author of Constituting Americans: Cultural Anxiety and Narrative Form

About the Author
harlotte Perkins Gilman (July 3, 1860 – August 17, 1935) was a prominent American feminist, sociologist, novelist, writer of short stories, poetry, and nonfiction, and a lecturer for social reform. She was a utopian feminist during a time when her accomplishments were exceptional for women, and she served as a role model for future generations of feminists because of her unorthodox concepts and lifestyle. Her best remembered work today is her semi-autobiographical short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" which she wrote after a severe bout of postpartum psychosis. t the age of five, Gilman taught herself to read because her mother was ill. Her mother was not affectionate with her children. To keep them from getting hurt as she had been, she forbade her children to make strong friendships or read fiction. In her autobiography, The Living of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Gilman wrote that her mother showed affection only when she thought her young daughter was asleep. Although she lived a childhood of isolated, impoverished loneliness, she unknowingly prepared herself for the life that lay ahead by frequently visiting the public library and studying ancient civilizations on her own. Additionally, her father's love for literature influenced her, and years later he contacted her with a list of books he felt would be worthwhile for her to read. Much of Gilman's youth was spent in Providence, Rhode Island. What friends she had were mainly male, and she was unashamed, for her time, to call herself a "tomboy." She attended seven different public schools, and was a correspondent student of the Society to Encourage Studies at Home but studied only until she was fifteen. Her natural intelligence and breadth of knowledge always impressed her teachers, who were nonetheless disappointed in her because she was a poor student. Her favorite subject was "natural philosophy," especially what later would become known as physics. In 1878, the eighteen-year-old enrolled in classes at the Rhode Island School of Design with the monetary help of her absent father, and subsequently supported herself as an artist of trade cards. She was a tutor, and encouraged others to expand their artistic creativity. She was also a painter. In 1884, she married the artist Charles Walter Stetson after initially declining his proposal because a gut feeling told her it was not the right thing for her. Their only child, Katharine Beecher Stetson.

Essential, entertaining reading for Gilman fans
By A Customer
The Crux is essential reading for anyone seriously interested in the writings of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and Jennifer S. Tuttle's is to be commended for bringing it to readers in this excellent edition. After having read most of Gilman's other fiction, I will admit that I put off reading this one because of its reputation as "the book about venereal disease" (sexually transmitted diseases). I feared it would be didactic, heavy handed, and depressing. Instead, it's like the best of Gilman's "optimistic reform" books: it treats its serious subject with a light touch, conveying its important ideas through appealing characters and a strong plot with Gilman's typical "happy ending." (Some readers might argue that the ending is a bit implausible, but that's part of the interest of this set of Gilman's writings.) At times, it is laugh-out-loud funny. Also, it's not entirely accurate to say that the book is "about" venereal disease, for although the last third of the book discusses the dangers women faced from sexually transmitted diseases in the years before adequate cures had been discovered, there is much more to the story. It portrays the opportunities for self discovery open to women who move from the stultifying conditions of New England villages to the open life in a new city in the Colorado mountains. The women characters (on whom the story focuses) range from young unmarried women to a seemingly dried-up old maid, a woman doctor, and one of literature's most delightful grandmothers.
My only serious objection to this edition is that University of Delaware Press, for some unaccountable reason, has elected to publish this book only in an expensive hardback edition. The story, along with Tuttle's illuminating introduction and clear explanatory notes, would be highly suitable as a teaching text if the book were available in a reasonably-priced paper edition.

Should be studied more often
By Monica Rico
_The Crux_ isn't "great literature" but it is well worth reading for the insight into Charlotte Perkins Gilman's thinking about sexuality, gender, and health. In this text, you can trace some of the elements of her belief in eugenics, intertangled with her conviction that women should have satisfying careers and independent lives. In other words, as with so many of Gilman's contemporaries, the ideas that we think of as "progressive" and "reactionary" were, in this era, mutually constitutive. _The Crux_ makes for fascinating reading and lively discussion.

Recommended read, it's always interesting to see where Gilman ...
By Liz C
This is a fairly quick read of a book, longer than Gilman's usual short story, but not something that would take weeks to read either. This particular copy is a bit different than most books. This one is a reprint of a "historic book" which in this case seems to mean the original page numbers happen to be in the middle of paragraphs, sentences and sometimes even words. It's a bit distracting at first, but you get used to it after a page or two. Each page is laid out in three columns, and the whole thing is the size of a composition notebook, though not nearly as thick. If that layout would distract you, there are other printings available in "regular" paperback size, some are even anthologies. Recommended read, it's always interesting to see where Gilman went with her various works.

Chadwick Yates and the Anuran Contest (The Adventures of Chadwick Yates Book 3), by Bradley Verdell

“We're deep in a land not made for men.”

Knife-edge Negotiations.

Deep in the tropical swamps of Tanzia, where anacondas and crocodiles thrive just out of sight and mosquitoes thicken the air, dwell the mysterious Anurans. The frog-like tribe is isolated, distrustful, and the guardians of a powerful form of sorcery no others can claim.

Chadwick Yates’ powers of wilderness survival and diplomacy are put to the ultimate test in his quest to know how they vanish and where they go. Yates and his long-suffering companion, Thurston Sharp, have one way forward: compete in a very dangerous Anuran sport...

About the Series

“Yates shouldered his shotgun and poured cartridge after cartridge of triple-aught shot into the minotaur. The monster howled and turned to face him, ruby eyes alight like coals.”

Monsters and elephant guns face off as Ambassador Chadwick Yates and Navy Commander Thurston Sharp explore the Forbidden Continent of Tanzia. The pair must adapt to the curious cultures of Gremlins, Faeries, Anurans, and others to make allies, and fight off the evil creatures that serve an ancient sorcerer.

The Adventures of Chadwick Yates is for readers who love action in exotic locales. The series blends the Lost World literary genre of Indiana Jones and King Solomon's Mines with the magic and monsters of epic fantasy.

Featuring real 19th century gadgets and a gorgeously-realized world, the series was inspired by such works as Allan Quatermain, Sherlock Holmes, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Heart of Darkness, The Most Dangerous Game, and The Lost World.

From Publishers Weekly
In this first of a new historical series, prolific British veteran Gardner (License Renewed and 15 other James Bond novels; The Liquidator and seven other Boysie Oakes novels; etc.) offers two books in one: the first, a poignant and spellbinding memoir of London during the Blitz; the second, a routine and plodding police procedural. Despite seemingly insurmountable male opposition, Woman Police Constable Suzie Montford is promoted to detective sergeant when the military draft creates a shortage of male police officers. The serious-minded Suzie doesn't get much chance to prove herself professionally before being matched with DCS Tommy "Dandy Tom" Livermore. Tommy is "an anomaly, a rarity, seen only once in a generation: a gentleman detective." Oh my, someone call central casting at once. See if Bill and Myrna are still available. The two are faced with a series of murders of young women, including a popular BBC announcer, strangled with piano wire, the handiwork of Golly Goldfinch, a grotesquely ugly man-child who obeys voices that order him to kill. He may appear simpleminded, but he is a dangerous quarry. Unfortunately, Golly is more pathetic than frightening and never believable. The best parts of the book describe WWII London and are very fine indeed.

From Library Journal
First in a new series, this historical features a young, inexperienced policewoman in World War II-era London. She investigates a frightening serial murderer who has been strangling young women with piano wire. A promising work from a practiced hand.

From Booklist
Golly Goldfinch, whose face is so deformed and horrifying that he always wears a mask, is commanded by a voice only he can hear to "Kill, Golly, kill." His hapless victims are young women, who are murdered in an unimaginably savage manner. But it's not until popular radio personality Jo Benton is killed that the police connect the series of murders. Assigned to the case is Detective Sergeant Suzie Mountford, who, despite her inexperience, has already been tagged for fast-track promotion. Her supervisor on the case is handsome, smart Detective Superintendent Thomas "Dandy Tom" Livermore. Suzie and Tom piece together the gruesome evidence, study the bloody crime scenes, and interview scores of the victims' families and friends but remain baffled. It's not until Golly's relentless killing spree strikes Suzie's own family that the two detectives get the break that cracks the case wide open. Best known as the author who continued the James Bond series after Ian Fleming's death, Gardner offers up a slightly less glamorous but no less entertaining thriller in this fast-paced, suspenseful, atmospheric whodunit. Wonderful to be able to read this great writer again.
By Dr. Fred R. Eichelman
Shame on Amazon. I have not been able to find a book I had not read by John Gardner in over five years. I consider him the most outstanding author of thrillers and spy fiction on any continent and had lost track of him when he returned to England after living here in Virginia several years. While many think of John Gardner as a Bond writer, actually much better than Fleming or Benson, that made up only 1/4th of his work and he has created epic characters in epic works. I say shame on Amazon as if you look for Gardner they give you hundreds of listings and not his latest series. Not under his name that is. I had to trace Gardner down in England through friends and found that he had written five I have not read and is on a sixth on now. Fortunately he gave me the names of the books I sought. For the record, he is better than ever.

"Bottled Spider" starts a series that will run through World War Two in London. This first one is in 1940 during the blitz and involves the nastiest seriel killer I have ever read about in fiction. "Golly" makes Jack the Ripper look like a kindergarten student and his "control" is equally chilling. While there is a lot of gore, Gardner writes so concisely and so beautifully that you are not repelled by it, The descriptions of England at the time and his development of characters are superb. The lead is a young police officer, Susannah Mountford, and Gardner gets into her head so well that you feel like she is telling the story. You feel what she feels and you know this is someone you would like to know.

The plotting is superb in suspense and action.

My wife and I have been to England three times now and the places described, most of them, are familiar. The bombings form a sub plot and the history given takes the reader easily back to that time and the places described. Thank you John Gardner for proving what we have always known. You are the best and I will eagerly start the second book in the series as soon as I send this off.

Good Solid Read But a Slow Starter
By rage01aba
Bottled Spider by John Gardner is book one in the Suzie Mountford series. Right out front I want it known that I received this book as a review copy from the publisher, Endeavor Press, this didn't favor this review in any way. The book and its above title character are in London during the almost nightly bombing raids during World War II. Detective sergeant Mountford is what amounts to field promoted to her position because The Yard needs people. This doesn't mean that she doesn't do a great job she in fact does. Gardner does a great job with keeping the reader aware of his historical surroundings while making life as natural as in that era could be. Mountford and her crew after the DCI was hurt on an investigation, is tasked with finding a serial killer who came to the forefront after killing a prominent radio personality. Gardner is one of the best writers I've read and certainly one of my favorites. He weaves an intriguing thrill ride that was pulse pounding fun! That being said I found it a very slow starter it was hard to turn the first few opening pages, but once it gets going it never stops. The slow start makes Bottled Spider a four star read. This series is one of John Gardner's lesser known series, but is yet another one that can't be missed.

Bottled Spider, an Exciting and Descriptive Tale of Murder
By Gene P
Bottled Spider is an exciting tale of a serial killer, the likes of Jack-the-ripper, in 1940 war torn London. John Gardner tells the story in a highly descriptive fashion from the perspective of a young female rookie police officer who finds herself assuming investigative responsibilities normally handled by more senior male officers who are now involved with the war against Hitler. The killer is not pleased that a young women "leads" the investigation, and is all too happy to include her in his affirmative action plan. It is an interesting blend of murder, romance, and contemporary issues, in a setting few of us have experienced.

Early market rise and crash in England.
By Leia Sulee
Excellent writing taking place in England, at a time after a war when a golden era seemed to be upon the nation, money seemed to be available for everyone. As in most boom times some things must eventually come to an end and a fall becomes inevitable. A story of parties involved when the steam railway is in its infancy and the rise and fall of notes, securities, and banking. Watch the life of a money market rising and falling and the effect it has on people and their relationships and life in general.

Well written.
Romance.
Drama.
Life in general.

A Revolutionary Sensation!
By Jeremy Lasley
Captain Death is a fun, fresh, and intelligent take on the old historical novel genre. The work's hero is Clancy, an ex-pirate who has fallen on hard-times and a bad marriage. Despite being a bit of a screw-up, Clancy has managed to strike up an acquaintance with nearly every major figure of the late 18th Century, from Mozart to Thomas Jefferson. Early in the novel he renews his acquaintance with the aptly-named Rafe Nader, Maritime Crusader of Social Justice. Clancy then embarks on a series of adventures that lead to encounters with Thomas Paine, George Washington, and finally, the mysterious pirate, Captain Death. This book was a joy to read! Not only is a joy to read- not only is a joy to read it is historically accurate. The author represents the major players of the day not as demi-gods, but as actual people-warts and all, slaves and all. This book is completely free from the ra-ra Patriotic propaganda that gives Rev-War novels a bad name, and I highly recommend it for all lovers of history, liberty, and hilarity!

Audio Book Review: Book Maybe OK, Could Nol Listen to the Narrator
By Sires
For your own sake listen to the Audble sample before downloading the Audible version. If you can stand the narration for nearly 8 hours then you may be good to go. I was only able to listen to it for about 15 minutes. It is read in this over the top, pseudo stage pirate "Argh, me hearties, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum" voice that did not let up for the first fifteen minutes and I kind of suspect goes on for the entire length of the book. I returned it (which is why I don't have an AVP badge on this review.

This may be an entertaining book and I may give it a shot as an ebook, but I just couldn't listen to it as a audible book.

From Publishers Weekly
Kane's latest Regency is a sequel to her last romantic suspense novel, The Gold Coin. Reserved but passionate noblewoman Breanna Colby hopes she can finally get on with her life now that her unscrupulous father is permanently behind bars. Instead, she receives a taunting missive from a shadowy assassin who makes not only Breanna, but also her best friend and cousin, Anastasia, his target. As the threats mount, the cousins enlist the help of aristocratic private detective Royce Chadwick, who pits his wits against the killer's; in the process of solving several related mysteries he falls in love with Breanna. The assassin's prolonged toying with his victims feels too contrived to generate much tension, but Kane's writing is strong and well paced. Breanna and her intimates are appealingly staunch and spirited. Regency devotees may miss the period charm typical of the genre, however; though the story is set in 1817, its actions, attitudes and speech patterns are distinctly contemporary. (Sept.)

Chapter One

London, England
December 1817

She was going to die.

It was only a question of when.

He sat calmly at a far corner table of the London coffeehouse, sipping his tea and gazing out the window as he contemplated the busy cobblestone streets. London looked the same as always. It was chillier than when he'd left, with winter closing in. The fog had transformed from a clammy blanket to a raw mist -- a mist that thickened as it mingled with the puffs of cold air emerging from the mouths of scurrying patrons and plodding horses. Everyone seemed in a hurry, including the shopkeepers who stepped outside in rapid succession, glancing about for any last-minute customers, then locking up for the day. One by one, they turned up their collars and hurried home to their waiting families.

How touching.

How convenient.

The throngs of people, while providing an interesting scene for an early evening diversion, made it easy to remain unnoticed. He'd intentionally picked this coffeehouse -- one whose customers were primarily artists and authors, none of whom would have the slightest idea who he was. So he remained, a solitary gentleman enjoying his solitary late-day tea.

And if, by chance, one of his colleagues happened to wander in, spot him at his corner table, that colleague would doubtless offer his greetings, inquire where his lordship had been, and learn about his prolonged business trip abroad.

Given his status and position, his explanation would be accepted without question or doubt.

Ah, anonymity. It came in many forms, each one of them satisfying indeed.

He set down his cup, tugging his gloves more snugly into place and studying his cloaked hands -- his right one, in particular. The German physician had been remarkably skilled, he mused, turning his palms up, then back down again. Same size. Same shape. Right down to the tapered fingers. With his gloves in place, it was impossible to tell that his right forefinger was a mere replica of what it had been. Oh, it couldn't bend at the knuckle, of course -- wood never did -- but he had no cause to bend that forefinger anyway. Not anymore. Now he had a substitute: his middle finger -- a trigger finger impeccably trained, ready to perform on command. He also had a new weapon, one fashioned especially for him, made by the same craftsman who'd designed and constructed the original. Both weapons were unique. But this new version was a stunning, one-of-a-kind achievement. Mastering it had taken every ounce of his skill and concentration, given his physical impediment. But master it he had -- as brilliantly as he'd mastered its predecessor -- and almost as quickly.

Yes, the weapon -- and the proficiency to use it -- had been acquired within a month of leaving England. But conquering the pain -- that had taken every day of the three long months he'd been away.

Still, it would surge to life, sometimes so acutely he nearly screamed aloud. It would never truly leave him. That he knew. Not even for a day.

But it also wouldn't stop him.

Nothing would.

As if to taunt him, the front door of the coffeehouse opened, admitting a cold blast of December air. He winced as the chilling wind shot through the room, found him in his corner, and set off the throbbing in his hand. Gritting his teeth, he waited for the worst of the pain to subside, bitterly acknowledging that the winter months were going to be excruciating. Cold intensified the dull ache that gnawed relentlessly at him, sharpening his agony with a piercing stab.

He had no choice but to endure it.

Damn the winter.

Damn the pain.

And damn Breanna Colby.

He finished his tea, cursing silently as the hot beverage did nothing to warm away his agony. A drink. That's what he needed. A good, stiff drink to dull the throb.

Tossing some coins on the table, he left the establishment, shoving his hands in his pockets as he made his way through the tangle of people to the nearest tavern.

Inside, it was dark and smoky, but he paid little attention to his surroundings as he ordered a brandy. He tossed it down in three gulps.

The liquor worked wonders, burning through his system and making its way to the raw nerve endings at his knuckle.

When all this was over, he vowed, he'd spend winters somewhere warm, somewhere where the pain was bearable. There he could live in seclusion. There he could savor his victories.

Especially the one hovering just ahead -- his ultimate triumph and long-awaited revenge. Doing away with that miserable bitch who'd done this to him, condemned him to three months of agony and a lifetime of physical torment.

She'd pay for each and every day he suffered, each and every night he'd awakened, drenched in sweat, pain spearing through his hand, shooting up his arm. Oh, yes, she'd pay. First, by watching her precious cousin die at her feet, then by waiting, wondering, when the bullet meant for her would find its mark.

It wouldn't be immediate. Oh, no, it would be prolonged. Torturing her had to be savored. He had to terrorize her to the point where she'd be crazed with fear.

Until she realized, with a final surge of panic, that she couldn't escape him.

Until she understood he never failed, never missed his mark.

Until she knew it would take one bullet, and one bullet alone, because he never needed a second.

And until she knew that he was watching her, toying with her, deciding when and where to end her wretched life.

Oh, Lady Breanna Colby, by the time I kill you, you'll beg to die.

And die you will.

Better than the Gold Coin...
By Abbys
Let me start by saying that this book is better than the prequel, The Gold Coin, in terms of the plot & the mystery line. Compare to the first book, this one encourages you to read on. The thrill & suspense of finding out who the real assassin is, is the bright side of this book. The way the assassin delivers his threat & the way A.K. described the detailed thoughts of the sicko assassin made this book spine chilling. I actually got goose bumps from time to time. I think she should be a mystery writer more than a romance (base on this Coin series, that is). I somewhat enjoyed this book bec. of this mystery plot. However, the romance is as much disappointing as the prequel. The love story of Breanna & Royce was just as unimpressive, unconvincing & dull as Anastasia's & Damen's. Their relationship wasn't developed enough - the declaration of their love was too simple, quick & unexciting - NO challenge whatsoever. Like the Gold Coin, this book also shows too many contradictory conversations, actions & gestures given the time of the 18th century. I did not like the idea of Breanna, who was supposedly a prim & proper lady, became the seducer in their relationship. Base on this Coin series, the two ladies where the aggressive one when it came to showing & demanding sexual desires... OR perhaps I am just old fashion & prefers the heroine as naive & innocent when it comes to this area.
The reason why I rate this book only a 3 stars is because despite my enjoyment to the mystery plot, this book was under Regency/Historical Romance gender. The romance as I have said above was simply not impressive & the historical time plot wasn't researched on & used properly. Too many inconsistencies & contradictions.... Had this book been under Mystery (& not historical), I would have rate it a 4 stars.
I am a new historical romance novel reader but I have read more than 40 books in this gender for the past three months ( mostly written by Julie Garwood's, Judith McNaught's, Jude Deveraux's & Jill Barnett's). In this span of time, I found out my own preferences. I have learned to know exactly what I like and what to expect in a historical romance stories. Perhaps my expectations are higher because of the previous books I have read & from the above authors? Well, all these comments are only my opinion. Everyone have different taste & preferences. I read quite a bit of 5 stars rating here in Amazon about this book, So...it is always best to find out for yourself. I suggest you barrow this book in the library to be on the safe side. Then buy your own copy afterwards - if u find it more than what I have said. Good luck!

Brenna's Story
By Kristi Ahlers
If you have read any other Andrea Kane books you may be disappointed. Although is is a good story there is just something that seeems to be lacking. I am not sure what that something is but it seems to lack some of the magic that is Andrea Kane. I am a huge fan and I buy her books simply due to the name on the cover and this will not change.
This is Brenna's story and is the conclusion to the coin series. The first being The Gold Coin. Although it is not a five star story it is still worth the time to read.

How NOT to write a historical romance
By JenKoko
I had this in my TBR pile for several years and finally got around to it this past rainy weekend. It allowed me to pass the hours, but will prove forgettable in a week, I'm sure. This novel works as a passable contemporary mystery (the cat-n-mouse game with the villain vs. the heroine intrigues you until the end), but it fails spectacularly as a historical or a romance. Do not buy it as a Kindle re-release! At best it is worth a $1 read. You're better off borrowing it from the Library or getting it for 25 cents in a Yard Sale. Unless you want to use it as an example of how a lack of historical research ruins a time period novel.

Spoilers beware....

Royce Chadwick is asked to helped hunt the "noble assassin" who is terrorizing Lady Breanna and her cousin Lady Sheldrake. Up till then he's had a career on Bow Street finding people. We're told his methods are unconventional and risky which means he wants Breanna and her cousin to stay at their country home and go about their business (which includes having armed guards about the place, workmen building a second manor house for Lady Sheldrake, and having a lavish country house party just 3 days after Christmas). Meanwhile he traces the notes and gifts the killer has sent wile also working on another case to find the illegitimate daughter of an elderly viscount. Somehow along the way, and after only spending two full days with our intrepid heroine, he falls madly in love with Lady Breanna and she with him. There's no real romantic tension or buildup in the story. They meet, draw a few initial conceptions about each other, part for a week, then meet again at a party and end up kissing in the garden. Two days later she's confessing her love and they're consummating their romance. Throw in a bunch of extraneous sex scenes which are too anatomically impossible to be believable (seriously seek professional help if the erection lasts more than 4 hours, seek mental help if you think 15 times in a night with a virgin won't leave her beyond wounded the next day). The majority of the story is all about the intrigue between our unknown killer hunting Breanna and plotting his revenge.

As a contemporary mystery this story had potential. But historical romances require a better understanding of the time period including its morality, forms of address and science. This novel has none of that. For instance:

- Royce is the second son of a nobleman, brother to an earl and yet he earns a living as a sort of Regency era private detective. That would make him a pariah in Society. No gentlemen had professions other than investments and owning land. They certainly didn't maintain houses with offices on Bow Street.

- As in the companion novel "The Gold Coin" Bow Street Runners act as a sort of modern day Scotland Yard. They are scouring the countryside investigating a string of murders of titled gentlemen and the disappearance of their young widows. They even have time to investigate the mysterious threatening notes sent to Lady Breanna. Bow Street Runners were the hired thugs of the Bow Street Magistrate in London. They hunted down petty criminals. Their biggest investigation might be to hunt a thief who tried to escape by highway. Some may take private commissions if they were good trackers or bodyguards, but none had any jurisdiction to investigate a string of murders. Bow Street was NOT Scotland Yard and London didn't have a formal police force until 1829. The best you could do was have evidence laid before a local magistrate or brought before the county azizes in the form of an inquest.
- Royce's other client, the aging viscount Lord Ryder, has lost his only heir to fever and now seeks his illegitimate daughter (the child born of the governess he seduced then fired and sent to a workhouse to birth her babe) to leave her his fortune and his title. Titles were NOT available to be willed to anyone. They were passed down to the eldest male heir as part of their patent from the Crown. Nor is it believable that any poor pregnant woman could have survived a workhouse childbirth and gone on to live out her life as a paid companion for 18 years bringing up her daughter in relative security.
- The story takes place in Paris and Kentshire, England but we're told at one point the hero expects a letter to get from Kent to Paris and the reply returned within a day. It took several days just to cross the English Channel in 1818 and another day over land to get to Paris.
- The heroine's mistress made a name for herself as a prostitute in a French brothel entertaining English soldiers for 15 years. From 1803-1814 France was at war with England. Any English soldier caught within its borders would have been immediately imprisoned and probably executed for suspected espionage. None would ever be patronizing a brothel in Calais or Paris.
- The villain plans to shoot Lady Sheldrake twice then Breanna with the same weapon, without reloading and at a considerable distance. This is a highly advanced weapon for 1818. It can not only shoot multiple rounds but it can also do so with great accuracy. Several times in the novel the villain manages to shoot and kill with direct shots to the head and heart. He even manages to shoot a weapon out of someone else's hand. Meanwhile a minimum of historical research tells us pistols in 1818 were one shot weapons notorious for their inaccuracy. That's why dueling was done at 20 paces and rarely ever killed anyone. It also explains why warfare consisted of soldiers lining up in a column in an open field and taking pot shots at each other. They were more likely to miss or wound rather than kill.

I can forgive Andrea Kane's writing style (anachronistic characterization and dialogue, long exposition that telegraphs a story rather than allows the reader to experience it), but the historical inaccuracies combined with the absent romance make this a deadly dull novel to read. The only thing keeping me going was to see how the villain would get his comeuppance. I gave it 2 stars solely because the villain plot was interesting. As a historical romance this one rates a -2.

The Legacy of Drennan's Crossing, by Wanda Luttrell

This beautiful novel of friendship between a boy and an old man takes place during World War I--when the death of thousands in Europe takes a backseat to a lone murder in the rural quiet of Drennan's Crossing on the banks of the Kentucky River. The narrator, 14-year-old Phillip, describes his special relationship with Joe, a new-comer to the small Southern community, as being "...like a rush of water down a narrow creek bed, widening, deepening, opening up fascinating new channels..." "Most everythin' was put here for a purpose," the old man tells him, and Phillip finds himself viewing nature and the God who created it in exciting new ways. Suddenly, murder disrupts the peaceful neighborhood, and Phillip is forced to face strange, violent feelings in his own heart. Struggling to come to terms with evil, he questions God's role in the scheme of things. Then he discovers something Joe knew all along--the legacy of Drennan's Crossing. "It is our Huck Finn and To Kill a Mockingbird," says Kentuckian Jean Ann Myatt in a post on "Good Reads."

Crossfire
By Nash Black
I bought this book for one reason: for twenty-five years I owned part of the narrow bottom land described in Wanda Luttrell's THE LEGACY OF DRENNAN'S CROSSING. Many of the scenes and houses are familiar to me including the stone house with ghosts which was the family home of our next door neighbor.
Phillip Moore is growing up and from his special friend he learns about life and people. This is the time of WWI when the hundred's killed in Europe are not as important as the murder of one man in Drennan's Crossing.
Nash Black, author of SINS OF THE FATHERS and QUALIFYING LAPS.

Brothers, Lovers, Gods: The Mysterious Lou Salomė, by Sharon Heller

At the turn of the last century, women were tightly bound in stays, literally and figuratively, feminine freedom close to impossible. Only fiercely free thinking and boldly independent women could break free from this constriction and live in accord with their true essence. Among the first to do so was the utterly fascinating Russian-born novelist, essayist, and intellectual Lou Andreas-Salomé, who, indifferent to social convention, defied the gender role of her day to become the “first modern woman,” as Anäis Nin called her.
Brilliant, passionate, and full of life, Lou had half the intellectual men of turn-of-the-century Europe at her feet, begging for her love. She was muse to Nietzsche, whose marriage proposal she rejected and who said of her: “I found no more gifted or reflective spirit … Lou is by far the smartest person I ever knew;” to Germany's lyric poet Rilke, who had a life-long love affair with her long after she abandoned him and who wrote to her “…all that I am stirs me because of you;” and to Freud, whom she embraced as her God and who called her “the great understander.” At age 51, she joined Freud’s circle and became the first woman psychoanalyst. Until her death, Freud and her were close personal friends and he wrote her eulogy.
In this novel, Heller tells Lou's enigmatic story from Freud’s couch, as he attempts to unravel the mystery of Lou Salomé while struggling to not get caught in her lair -- "Careful Freud," he cautioned himself. "All tracks around her go into the lion's den and none come out."

Absolutely wonderful!
By roxanne
This was a novel about sassy, brilliant and endearing Lou Andreas Salome and her life , captured through her psychoanalysis with the brilliant Sigmund Freud. Sharon has created a wonderful thought provoking novel. She has a wealth of knowledge and a great command of the English language. It inspired me to think more about the lives of imminent philosophers and great thinkers like Salome, Nietzsche and Freud! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Thank you Sharon Heller for an inspiring read.
