Moscow Dreams & Anya's Story are a Marvelous Time Capsule of Life in the Former USSR

"Moscow Dreams" is a 5 star read that shows us the height of possibilities, the breath of fear, a crucible of becoming! Captivated by author, Julia Gousseva's ability to paint pictures that materialized in my mind, images of Moscow Dreams will forever be part of my internal landscape. Nowhere before had, I read, "Sunshine squeezed in between the buildings." As an author it had never occurred to me that a summer rain could come on so suddenly that one could see them, "...racing each other to the ground." Were this wordsmiths ability to write about the ordinary that transcended the experience it would have been enough to make this a thoroughly unique read!
Julia Gousseva demonstrates her mastery of historical fiction with layers of both generational personal and national history woven through the longing of 14 year old, Marina who lives through the fall of the Soviet Union and all that ensues. Juxtaposing what is known with what came before, this fiction to succeed because the tension builds and enthralled this reader while illuminating the human condition! I highly recommend this book.
"Anya's Story" is a 5 star must read fiction that breaks the silence about life in the former Soviet Union! Book by book, Julia Gousseva shows us a Russia during the Soviet Regime and its impact on individual people; people who would have the same desires, and longings to fulfill their dreams that we have. Yet are thwarted by a government that controls and manipulates what is needed to create the desired effects of scarcity thus thrusting people into survival mode. Yet, here again, we see the triumph of the human spirit, which though living in desolate locals, forced into fearful situations, told nothing when those they love are in peril, rises above the governments manipulations to soar with the eagles! I highly recommend this book!

A Glimpse into a Time Gone By~

This was my first read from author Julia Gousseva. I had not much knowledge of Russia’s history and the fall of the Soviet Union. Here is an author who lived the life and knows her craft to tell the tale of Anya and her life during a turbulent era, especially amongst the Russian coup. Her life as an army wife living on a military base was fascinating. She loved Victor enough to put up with the kind of lifestyle that went along with his position at that time. I think she was a strong woman. This novel has sparked my interest into learning more about that time period. I must also comment on how smooth the story flowed.

What a wonderful set of novels at this price

What a wonderful set of novels at this price. Both books are an astute look into the volatile period of Russian history. "Anya's Story" had me hooked by the first exciting chapter. I'm not one to give out spoilers, so I'll just say it's filled with drama, love, history, a tale of a young woman's coming of age journey. "The Russian Northern Fleet", was quite fascinating with submarines, drama, and if you want to learn more about the Soviet Union, you can't miss this excellent set. I am a fan of Julia Gousseva's works and looking forward to more from this brilliant author.
