In love with a Prussian officer, a Jewish woman moves to Hitler’s Berlin

Every afternoon, Paule tends to her father’s newspaper clippings and listens to his stories. An actor, Paul-Alain Bernheim has a sexual appetite and a lust for life that have made him a legend of the Paris stage. He is also a fiercely proud Jew, and he has imbued his daughter with an unshakeable pride in the history of her people. So why, she wonders, has she fallen in love with a German?

From the moment Paule spots Wilhelm von Rhode at an embassy reception, she can’t take her eyes off him. So after a whirlwind Paris romance, when von Rhode is recalled to Berlin, Paule follows as his wife. But as the Nazis tighten their stranglehold on Germany and the world prepares for war, will Paule’s love stand against the night?

An historical novel, pertinent .
By A Customer
The novel takes place during the Nazi period in Europe. It captures a considerable number of nuances of the prewar Europe as well. Ironies, twists of fate, belief and disbelief are all there. It would make a tremendous film in the proper hands

Retroactive Prescience
By Eric Hildebrand
This is a very well-researched and highly plausible historical novel of the Nazi era in France and Germany. The 2 main characters are a German army officer and a French Jew who fall in love and marry, and their respective attempts to live with the contradictions inherent in such an arangement at the times and places of the story.

Both characters are essentially decent people, with emotions and reactions understandable to the reader, and so it is possible to imagine some of the sensations and dilemmas one might feel when one is caught within the machinery of a formerly rational nation being transformed into a speeding, insane, and murderous juggernaut. Indeed, as a citizen of the post-2001 era USA, these sensations seemed chillingly real.

Being published in 1964, when the USA was in the full thrawl of the myth of American Exceptionalism, I imagine that the initial audience would have had a harder time imagining the characters' plight.

If you have not read Condon before, you will find that he is a little heavy on the telling, less heavy on the showing. To put it another way, you won't have to slog through 7 pages of description of Aunt Gertrude's broach on the way to finding out how the protagonists meet. Condon gives you a great story, and is able to give a vivid portrait of his characters, without making you wade through a lot of poetic, yet gratuitious, fluff.

Here is a quote from the original dust jacket: '...stories are about people, and people are never merely one thing or another. Writers are drawn to weak heroes who have strength, because that is what men are: weaklings with strengths...What I wanted to say was that when evil confronts us in any form, it is not enough to flee or pretend that it is happening to somebody else. But though evil must be opposed, when it is fought with evil's ways it must ultimately corrupt and strangle the opposer'

Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I discovered this book by accident in my favorite used book store. I highly recommend it.

Still harrowing
By Jeff Farin
Every one of Richard Condon's works gives a unique view into a mind that informs, entertains, and challenges his readers to think deeply about the history, the gaiety, and the horror of mankind. "An Infinity of Mirrors " is no different. Condon tells a story, set to the rise and fall of the Nazis, that individualizes the dashed hopes and the horrors of the time. This story is hard to read, and harder to put down. It is emotional, infuriating, and disturbingly accurate. Well worth the read, and timeless in its telling.
