From her widow's walk, Bessie King watches and waits for her husband, Adam. For many months, day after day, she climbs that ladder and looks out over the Texas plains. From the Author
The Widow's Walk is my second historical fiction story. (The first is Sarah's Valley) Although I thoroughly enjoy writing mysteries, I always seem drawn to stories about the past. Perhaps it is because as a young person, I loved reading Max Brand, Zane Grey, and Louis L'Amour. I have always been enthralled about history and imagining how the brave men and women survived through those difficult years. A time when life was hard but simple and homesteaders lived by higher standards. These were the ones who laid the foundation for the future. Have you ever driven down a road and noticed off in the distance an old abandoned dwelling? There are no roads leading to it anymore. Tall grass and scattered trees surround it, growing wild without paths or trails. The windows stare vacantly out at you. Do you ever wonder as you glance in its direction, what story this old house could tell?
Somewhere in the Texas panhandle in the middle of nowhere on the wide-open prairie, dotted with mesquite and junipers, there is also such a place. Whether it is still there, I do not know; however, I am sure there must be traces of it. There has to be - after all, someone has to tell the story and it would be more convincing if I were to say, 'look, here is where this story begins.'
About the Author
Sharon Mierke and her husband, Al, (now retired) live in the home they designed and built over thirty over years ago in a small community in Manitoba, Canada. Sharon squeezes in writing time between volunteering and family visits. She does much of her writing while spending time in Texas. She and her husband have developed a great love for Texas and the wonderful friends they have made there. Sharon began her writing career several years ago. While taking a writing course with the Writing School in Ottawa, Canada, she had two novels published. Her short story, Nowhere to Hide, was published in Woman's World and introduced her to writing humorous mysteries. Beryl Swallows is the main character in another mystery, Virtual Enemies, and Case Closed. not. Her historical fiction novel, Sarah's Valley, has been the best seller in several categories over the past three years.

Good Read

This was,a well crafted narrative. The author had an unusual style of writing. It was very straightforward and as the reader I added my own interpretation of the story and the emotions it evoked in each character. I loved the realistic point of view that the story emitted. I enjoy western and historical fiction.The life of this family on the plains of Texas provided an excellent read. As I finished I felt the bittersweet memories the past drudges up for each of us from time to time. I did not realize the author also had written the novel SARAH's Vallley which I read several years ago and enjoyed.

Another wonderful book by Sharon Mierke. The characters are so well developed, you feel you are there with them. I like the way each chapter is about one of the characters, great way to keep you informed about their story. The beginning and the ending of the story will now always make me think about run down places, and what its story could be.
