Five years later his return to normalcy is shattered while browsing in a local bookstore, when he discovers a book stating the official story of 9/11 is a lie. When he turns the first page, he enters into a new world of conspiracy theories. With his anger resurrected, he begins his research. He questions the 911 Commission report and the reasons the towers fell. He realizes the only way to answer the doubts and questions raised is a new independent investigation. His quest leads him to a congressman's office, a local cable television show and finally to Washington DC, where he is scheduled to present his findings. One Way Elevator is one man's search for the truth. He knows that if 9/11 were an inside job, the people behind it are still out there and it could happen again.

A Book Worth Reading
By Eugene H Geenan
A thought-provoking historical novel serving as a reminder that the American public has never received an official answer to a number of questions that were raised post the horror of 9/11. While some may believe the questions/theories are purely high-speculation, the author
(who experienced the tragedy first hand) is simply driving home the point that the public deserves a response based on professional assessments. Given the enormity of the loss of lives and the aftermath on those affected - not to mention the resultant wars undertaken - I can understand the motivation behind the writing. I recommend it.

Victorian Soap Opera
By K. Wagner
I read this book on my Kindle from the Wilkie Collins Collection. Its not one of his greatest but it is a fine book. A young man suffering from an emotional shock is being manipulated by 2 groups. The first group is made up of friends who want to see him married. The second group is headed by a Catholic priest who wants to see the young man converted and return the Abbey* property back to the Church. [*Lands which were taken from the Church by Henry the VIII in the 16th century and given to the young man's family.] The 2 groups working against each other make the book humorous in the beginning. It only turns tragic later on with a somewhat happy ending.

It is one of Collin's shorter works and well worth reading. If this book was being written in modern times. A fictional cult would be created, but the Roman Catholic Church is useful for the plot because of its views on marriage and divorce.

Victorian prejudice
By Francine Smith
This book contains tiresome characters in an anti-catholic setting. For a Wilkie Collins book, it is absolutely dreadful. Still, it is a Collins book, so at least it is well written. A man and woman marry. A Jesuit, out to get the man's property, breaks up the marriage and succeeds in making everyone miserable, including the reader. While I had heard of the prejudice against Jews and Catholics in Victorian England, it never hit home until I read this book.

Great Read and awesome characters
By Verena Techie
This book did not get great reviews and compared to his other books it perhaps was not as suspenseful and a little sad but I loved the characters and the interplay between marriage or religion, who would win and how sometimes religion can take advantage of people who are down on their luck and needing something and so can women for that matter! I also loved the ending. I am loving everything that Wilkie Collins writes and I wish I could have met him. His books will deal with topics that were taboo in his day and that's fun. (Like pregnancy out of wedlock or the sad state of marriage and inheritance laws for women.)

Sword of State: The Wielding, by Richard Woodman

The year is 1659.

Lord General George Monck has set up on camp on the River Tweed on the border of Scotland and England with his loyal army.

He has plans to retire, to spend the rest of his years on his estates in Essex and Potheridge with his wife, Anne, and son, Kit.

But the changing political climate in London forces him to march his army south to the capital and Monck isn’t one to defy duty.

In the Rump of the Long Parliament, the case is being made for an end to the Commonwealth and for the Restoration of the Monarchy.

Some want Charles, the son of the previous King, to return from his exile in France whilst others would even have Monck, with his Plantagenet blood, as their King.

When the Monarchy is restored, there is never a quiet moment for Monck.

From commanding the English naval forces against the Dutch to leading the team trying to contain the Great Plague, Monck becomes Charles II’s right hand man, equally adept at the difficult game of politics and the ways of the military both on land and at sea.

Meanwhile, Anne is keen for the advancement of their son.

He could become a courtier or the King’s page-boy and so she urges Monck not to retire.

But illness has always been strife in Monck’s life and it seems to keep coming back…

When his wife, Anne, tells him that he needs to slow down, will he listen?

Or will his sense of duty to his country get in the way?

In The Wielding, the third and final book in the Sword of the State trilogy, award-winning author Richard Woodman recreates the true story of George Monck, a giant of the 17th Century. Monck is all but forgotten today, yet his legacy is nothing less than the British monarchy and a famous regiment – the Coldstream Guards.

Captain Richard Martin Woodman LVO is an English novelist and naval historian who retired in 1997 from a 37 year nautical career, mainly working for Trinity House, to write full-time. His main work is 14 volumes about the career of Nathaniel Drinkwater, and shorter series about James Dunbar and William Kite, but he also written a range of factual books about 18th century and WW2 history.

Commendable historical fiction.
By David E. Eppenstein, Jr.
This the last installment of a trilogy about a man named George Monck. I have run across this man in the various British histories that I have read but never knew very much about him. Most of these histories in which he is mentioned have always regarded him as a supporting or background character. These three books, ebooks by the way, would certainly correct that notion. Along with William Marshall, another unsung hero of English history, George Monck deserves more recognition among his countrymen than has so far been accorded. From reading this work, admittedly fictional work, it is possible to regard Monck as a turncoat and opportunist. However, after examining his actions and discerning his motivations treachery would be far from imagining. He seemed to genuinely to regard the welfare of the people and devotion to duty as his virtues. The struggles and political intrigues he had to endure along the way put me in mind of another general with like talents and virtues and a famous temper, Benedict Arnold. I wonder if Monck's example didn't play on Arnold's mind when he was contemplating his choices. Had our Revolution gone the other way history could easily have regarded Arnold as the Monck of the American Colonies. Such men as Marshall, Monck, and Arnold are rare though the author gives us a tease about the the life of yet another great man just beginning his career. Their lives are certainly worth reading about and studying. George Monck's life is definitely one to read about and think on as are the lives of the others mentioned. This trilogy is a good place to start.

Shiloh, Unveiled:: A Thoroughly Detailed Novel on the Life, Times, Events, and People Interacting with Jesus Christ, by Walter Joseph Sche

“The author interposes a broad mix of history, fiction and the supernatural to create a portrait of epic proportions. … Schenck offers regular contrasts between the decadence of Rome and the morality of those under its yoke, and the savior is portrayed as a guiding light in an otherwise murderous, untrustworthy time … the story is noteworthy for its breadth of context. … An ambitious novel.”

From the Author
I love Biblical movies. Their power set against majestic scenery with colorful clothes, vivid dialogue, and memorable music move me to tears and reevaluations of who I am set amidst this world. Within, I discover visualizations of the historic times filled with a multitude of scenarios. The realms of great possibilities exist with the context of wondrous beauty.
It was my love for cinema that influenced me after I finished translating from Koine Greek the New Testament Gospels to establish one manuscript with a superior English version than the International Version or any of the other Bible translations. After I published the Comprehensive Analysis of the Synoptic Gospels I wanted to present the four versions as a movie maker presents his movies, but rather than moving pictures I worked with a vast composition of words that flowed out of my pages to create a visual grandeur of the life and times not only of Jesus Christ, but all the people who lived within the works of the gospels.
Indeed, Shiloh, Unveiled--a vast and complicated epic Biblical novel--encompasses all the personalities whom Jesus came in contact with. I drew them as the movie-maker drew Ben-Hur but with the modernization of 300 Spartans as well as the latest Polish movie: Quo Vadis. I also wanted to be true to the reality of the times and circumstances of history, and of human life. To depict truth and reality, a person cannot shy away from sexuality or the harsh usage of actual spoken language. Therefore, I deliberately encompassed graphic testimonies similar to Showtime's Spartacus with the sexuality of the Last Temptation of Jesus.
My project actually predated Gibson's Passion and Showtime's Spartacus. Like those movies, Shiloh, Unveiled does not refrain from the honest depiction of the betrayal of Jesus and the terrible suffering that he underwent. Again, I set out to present a true life manifestation of reality when I worked on this book and rendered it with full-scale graphically sexual and violent scenes because that is the true nature of Biblical writings. Yo think that the Bible does not depict violence, gore, rape, sex is to deny God's writings. Such a thinker is a massive hypocrite, blind to the course of God's purpose.
Can I say that in my writing that God's spirit came upon me? Yes, I can. I approached this spiritually influenced novel with the idea of presenting all the Biblical characters in their full array - and with the power of the Holy Ghost that is exactly what I achieved. For hundreds of nights it felt as if my fingers were guided by the power of Christ as words and ideas rushed out of me in profound dignity. My body was immersed with an electrifying power that is easily testified to upon reading the material. My friends say that somehow I am the strongest "old man" they ever met even though I sat glued to my chair for hours on end each and every day. I was so intensely engrossed with the writing that I barely slept during those writing years.
If one judges length as testimony, then know this fact: Shiloh, Unveil contains 480,676 words, making it the 9th longest book in English literature. If Shiloh, Unveiled is considered with the thematic presence of Michael the Archangel in the novels Priests and Warriors and First Voices, then the word count adds up to 1,153,773 words, ranking me as the number one writer in a single thematic execution of a literary work.
Shiloh, Unveiled presents all the personalities of the gospels within the full scope of the Roman Empire. I delved into the lives of the rulers of Judea, Rome, Egypt, etc. One incredible drama after another unfolds in this giant exploration of Jesus' life: the environment, the political machinery of Roman and Judean rule, the behind-the-scenes unveiling of the religious authorities of Judea as well as an unveiling of Jesus' followers as never before presented. All characters have a voice depicted in movie action within the vast panorama of history.
Though Shiloh, Unveiled is a voracious reading, it does luminously reveal every written word that Jesus shared in the gospels in a fresh and insightful interpretation. It offers a vast, world-class achievement presenting me as a profound mystic who immerses realism in an existential vein. It is filled with on-the-mark details that will leave you breathless in their scope and perfect reflections of the biblical heroes--and anti-heroes--who walked or heard of Christ. Historically, Shiloh, Unveiled is accurate. Spiritually - the blessing upon me has been incredible.
Even though Shiloh, Unveiled does not adhere to any religious creeds, it is nevertheless the best thing out there concerning the life of Jesus. To criticize me based on personal religious beliefs demonstrates to the world bigotry with damnable ignorance. A critique should limit themselves to plot and character development and grammatical or historical errors. If Jesus Christ is offended, then let him settle the issue with me -- not some raving lunatic who is blinded by extreme prejudice.
As this is the 12th Anniversary Reissue, Jesus must be happy with me, especially since he permitted me to write so many other works.

At this time I want to say thank you to everyone who took time out of their lives to explore my work. Believe me, once you finish reading this book you will know more about the times of Jesus than most scholars ever learned.
This is a work of profound significance, and has been professionally reviewed with outstanding results. Only the foolish amateur, with perhaps motivation to lead readers to other books, are the sad occupants of a useless existence.
Thank You,

Walter

Perfectly balanced, perfected translated, perfectly rendered, without equal by anyone. Mandatory reading.
By Amazon Customer
This is the most perfectly balanced and best scriptural translation of the synoptic gospels I have ever read. the translation is so precise it appears seamless, rendering familiar events to new heights of reality and understanding. Shiloh, Unveiled is written in chronological order with all four gospels integrated into a single reading, thus enhancing and clarifying many former mysterious. All names and locations have been restored to their original Hebrew names. Why is this important? So the reader can have a precise and true concept of the people they are reading about before the corruptors and interpolations of scriptures took effect. Schenck also integrates old testament references and presents accurate interpretations in a flawless, indisputable version where everything is perfectly integrated into the storyline. Pilate's motivations are explores. Herod is revealed boldly. Philip is exposed. All the apostles are given form and function. Schenck's writing is precise, tight, and worthy of all scholars and general audiences. If you are not reading this book alongside the gospels, then you are not going to have the light of truth in your life. To think this is mere copy is foolish, stupid, and shows the lack of understanding. Again, this is the best book ever performed in the recreation of Jesus's life, thoughts, philosophies, and the political intrigued of the Roman and Parthian age. This book is mandatory reading if you want to know Jesus.

A vibrant, courageous depiction of our Savior written by a great writer with prophetic, insightful powers!
By Edwina Pinto
Walter Schenck's epic of Jesus' life is a vast panorama of extraordinary writing. It is a journey through the eyes of the people who meet Jesus and interact with him in various encounters. Mr. Schenck wrote this with compassionate modernism that my young adult grown up children can understand and relate with. This is also a super-sized poetic masterpiece that presents great action and adventure with fantastic dialogue of how people really talked during those days. It is written as if a person was watching a movie. Since I own this book I took my time reading it and without a doubt I can clearly say that this author is the greatest biblical writer of all time. I know as I read many such novels. It is also the clearest story line on Jesus life. It is informative, inspiring, and as soon as I finished reading it, I know, this author has been Godly ordained to present to the world a brand new version that relates to the new generation. How much do I love this book? 1,000 stars of admiration!

Not as advertised. It is poorly written. Confusing with non-English names. I don't recommend to spend money buying it.

A Soccer Hooligan in America, by Carl-Michal Krawczyk

A Greyhound bus ride through America and a subsequent stay in New Orleans compels Victor Stavski to reconsider everything he has stood for as a fanatical England supporter. With the Union Jack caped over his bull-neck shoulders and the Cross of St. George emblazoned down his back, Stavski and his mates tried initially to get the passengers riled up with some pre-match chanting for the upcoming England v. USA match. To his surprise, the Americans on board the bus and those he met in the cities along the way had no partisan interest in international soccer and, if anything, they began to chant for England. The Americans love England. But Victor Stavski discovers during this American odyssey that his real love is not for England after all, but for America and that it began with the music and TV images coming out of America that he experienced as a child.

"...A masterful tour de force with astute sociocultural, historical, psychological and even musical insights."
-- Tressa Davey, professional psychologist

"..."A Soccer Hooligan in America" is an exploration of a Brit's discovery of our egalitarian America, or perhaps a discourse of American values, or just perhaps, a British hooligan's reeducation of a not-so-merry England."

A UNIQUE MUST-READ NOVEL
By Mrs. T. Davey
What happens to our antihero Vic Stavski, an English soccer hooligan, as he embarks on his greyhound bus trip across America with his entourage of thugs boldly looking for trouble en route?

In this ingenious picaresque-style novel, C-M Krawczyk skilfully captures Vic’s journey as he discovers America and the transformative possibilities that an egalitarian society represents. On his journey, Vic meets a dazzling cast of well-drawn characters and finds meaning and connection in each of these encounters. As a result, he is gradually awakened to the effect on his own life of being born into a society that is highly influenced by the concept of social class. The tale is relayed in the narrator’s comic and aphoristic fashion and during the journey Vic finally begins to question his life.

What happens next is totally riveting….

C-M Krawczyk’s narrative style is the use of a gritty vernacular which gives the novel its unique feel. It also perfectly reflects the narrator’s lack of formal education combined with his highly intelligent and often hilarious satirical observations that send up the whole gamut of linguistic and cultural differences, social classes and human foibles. However, for all its laugh out loud moments, C-M Krawczyk uses his comic gifts without ever compromising the story’s underlying poignancy that is both powerful and utterly gripping.

Overall, the writing is superb and this is a masterful tour de force with astute sociocultural, historical, philosophical and even musical insights. In the end, we care deeply about what happens to Vic and fall in love with all the quirky characters that were brought to life along the way in this compelling, wise and thoughtful novel.

This book is quite simply a mighty fine read!

A brilliant journey of discovery!
By Sam
I simply loved this book. Coming from England myself, and with a long standing fondness for America, I was instantly drawn to the journey that Vic Stavsky found himself on as he took his love of English football to America. I was curious how the associated dirty thuggery of football hollliganism would be greeted in the land where purity and perfection seems to prevail. To my mind, the dichotomy was going to be there from the outset. And I wasn't disappointed. Indeed, what I got was far more.
A 'Football Hooligan in America' is a gripping tale of contrasts. A very personal narrative that takes a gritty and dry humour from the narrator to the land of the 'Yankee Doodle Dandies'. Touchingly thoughtful and yet at times outrageously funny; it's this clever and unique style that really makes the work of this author so unique. Not afraid to make generalisations, the narrator's observations are refreshingly untempered, whether he is referring to an attack 'by the enamel teeth' of McDonalds and it's 'tsunami of happiness', or the contrasts within his homeland (England) between 'them and us'. Indeed it is the freedom and escape from the barriers of social class that draws Vic deeper and deeper into America, and the true journey that I feel this novel is really about. Vic, in his anonymous nothingness back in 'the land of inequality', finds comfort in the equality gained from being called 'sir' in America... along with the rest of McDonald's customers..and along with the rest of America. In a land where everybody is treated with equality, Vic becomes someone; moreover, he discovers himself.
So while at its tips, there is fun and humour, I feel the heart of this novel is routed in thought provoking intelligence, and not without frequent reference back to historical fact.
One last thing to add. While this journey is very much about the central character 'vic' - and it's he who the reader is compelled to grow understanding and warmth for - it's also the narrator who intrigues me. We learn of his character through hints and observations of others and what I'd love to see Krawczyk do next is resume a story with Vic revealed in the first person..with whatever contrast that reveals!

The Depth of Beauty, by A.B. Michaels

In 1903 San Francisco’s Chinatown, slavery, polygamy, and rampant prostitution are thriving— just blocks away from the city’s elite, progressive society.
Wealthy and well-connected, Will Firestone enters the mysterious enclave with an eye toward expanding his shipping business. What he finds there will astonish him. With the help of an exotic young widow and a gifted teenage orphan, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery, where lust, love and tragedy will change his life forever.
A stand-alone novel, The Depth of Beauty is the latest addition to the dual genre series, “Sinner’s Grove,” which chronicles the family and friends of a world-famous artists’ retreat on the northern California coast. The stories follow both historical and contemporary tracks and can be read separately or together for greater depth. Other titles in the series include the award-winning The Art of Love, Sinner’s Grove and The Lair.

Review
"The Depth of Beauty is the latest book in the Sinner's Grove series by A.B. Michaels and I must say, I was hooked from the very beginning.  The plot was interesting and the characters were intriguing...My favorite thing about Mandy's character and the way the author has written the story is Mandy's incredible insights and her journal entries that feature these.  An interesting story all around."     Jessica/Bottles&Books Reviews"This was a different kind of romance. It took place over several years and there is plenty of angst and many colorful characters to round out the story and make it an enjoyable read. What I enjoyed most was the setting.  I think this author really captured the ambiance of early 1900's San Francisco and Chinatown."  Kimberly/The Book Sirens
"In A. B.Michaels' involving and richly atmospheric novel The Depth of Beauty, a son of privilege has his eyes opened to a broader world.  When [Will Firestone] finds himself in San Francisco's Chinatown, he encounters a fascinating young mother, and their complicating relationship draws Will into realities - good and bad - that he had never before imagined. The Depth of Beauty is set in the same fictional world as the author's novels The Art of Love, Sinner's Grove, and The Lair, but Michaels does such a smooth and assured job of rounding off her narrative that the book can easily be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone."  Celia Shea/Historical Novel Society

From the Author
The Depth of Beautyis a work of fiction.  However, I've woven a number of historical figures into the story, includingDonaldina Cameron, Rupert Blue, and Sieh King King, each of whom playedcritical roles in the history of San Francisco's Chinatown during the turn ofthe twentieth century. Likewise, descriptions of the plague (and attempts toeradicate it), lotus-foot women, muitsais,  the use of opium, the callfor reform, etc. are all based on historical records.

About the Author
A native of northern California, A.B. Michaels holds master's degrees in history and broadcasting, and worked for many years in the public relations and marketing fields. She currently lives in Boise, Idaho with her husband and two furry "sons" who don't seem to realize they're just dogs.  Her award-winning series, "Sinner's Grove," consists of both historical and contemporary novels involving the family and friends of a world famous artists' retreat on the northern California coast.  While each novel can be read independently, together the stories weave a rich tapestry of life, love and intrigue, both at the turn of the 20th century and today.

5 stars – Sweeping and epic historical drama/romance!!
By LJ Nelson
The Depth of Beauty is the latest book in the Sinner's Grove series and transports us back to San Francisco at the start of the Twentieth Century for a sweeping historical drama/romance chronicling the life and society of businessman, Will Firestone.

I am once again astounded and in awe of the research that the author has done to bring this time period to life. The detail in the book is amazing; it was honestly a feast for the senses. I swear I could see, touch and smell everything the characters in the story did in full HD technicolour.

Although born into the cream of society, Will is not a man to sit on his laurels. He strives for more in life and seeks to make his own fortune. Seeing an opportunity to expand his shipping business in Chinatown, Will embarks on forging new relationships and business connections with its’ inhabitants. In the process he unravels some of the mysteries surrounding the new immigrants and their culture. Including some of their customs which are not very palatable to a modern, forwarding thinking man like Will.

All the while Will is on his voyage of self-discovery, there is a whole plethora of secondary characters including that of his sister’s ward, Mandy and of course Sinner's Grove itself.

I loved Mandy. The young girl has experienced so much pain and heartache already in her life. Now she suddenly finds herself thrust into a society she knows nothing about and sets about finding her own place in the world.

As the story is told over four years we watch Mandy bloom into a wonderful and gifted young woman. She is so intuitive and has an ability to read almost any situation and person. A fact which unnerves Will as she really ‘sees’ him. We get an insight into Mandy’s thoughts and feelings as she reveals all in her journal entries throughout the book.

With outbreaks of the plague, kidnappings, threats of violence and earthquakes we experience all highs and lows, love and loss that this tale has to offer.

I freely admit I was in tears a few times in this book as ‘the feels’ were too much at times. I also went a bit daft with the highlighter on my kindle as so many phrases and points in the book ‘spoke’ to me. However, I don’t want to share them here as I want you to experience them first hand like I did. You NEED to read this book!!

I am in love with this author’s writing and the worlds she creates.

Compelling Historical Love Story!
By Catherine V
AB Michaels gets better with each novel. The Depth of Beauty is her best- she paints her characters so well that you truly care what happens to them. Those who have read her other novels will finally find out how Will and Mandy first found each other. The couple’s involvement in the San Francisco Chinatown of their day brings to life little-known details about the newly-arrived Chinese immigrants and the difficulties they faced from discrimination, the Plague, and gangs. Find a comfy chair, step back in time, and become part of this compelling historical love story!

Another Hit!
By B. A. Reader
This latest novel from author A.B. Michaels is a great read for many reasons. First, several of my favorite characters from one of the author's previous novels, "Art of Love," are back. Secondly, the novel takes place in the San Francisco area in the early 1900s, including Cinatown, and the author beautifully describes the beauty and tensions of the times. In addition, the characters immediately caught my attention and kept me reading well into the night. Two of the main characters alternate narrating the story and their two different perspectives add greatly to the entertainment. One of the main characters, Will, views events and circumstances from a different perspective than his affluent social circle. Several of his family and friends, unlike Will, are unwilling to relate to other people's problems beyond their very comfortable world. Another character has an ability to see deeply, beyond the surface, into people. The way these two characters not only discover themselves but also discover each other is fascinating. After reading this novel, I am still thinking of how individual people and cultures view beauty differently, both surface and inner beauty. In short, this book leaves me wanting more.

Devil's Monk, The: A 19th century British mystery (A Thomas Potts Historical Mystery), by Sara Fraser

An intriguing 19th Century historical mystery.

July, 1829. When a female corpse, dressed in male clothing, is discovered lying in a haystack in the Worcestershire countryside, rumour and superstition abound. For the sighting of a man in white robes fleeing from the scene leads to suspicion that the ‘Devil’s Monk’ is responsible for the crime. According to local legend, this vengeful apparition appears at intervals to molest and kill.

Constable Thomas Potts is dismissive of the rumours – but without knowing the victim’s identity, he’ll need the devil’s own luck to catch her killer. And when a second body turns up, Potts is under pressure to track down the murderer before hysteria engulfs the town.

I found the profanity to be excessive.
By Judy Lesley
When I discover that a novel is set in 1829 in an area of small villages in Worcestershire I have come to expect certain things from that novel. I love to read historical mysteries and especially those where the author has conveyed the time period and the atmosphere existing among the various levels of society. What I do not expect is to find the "f" word thrown around by the villagers as if they are impelled by some psychological malady to use that word repeatedly, by men and women alike. It was not only unexpected, it became a serious detraction from the novel for me. I've not read any previous novel by Sara Fraser so I have no idea if this profanity is common in her historical mysteries. I also felt very uncomfortable with the villagers being so needlessly cruel and harsh in their attitude and treatment of Constable Thomas Potts. These two devices used by the author caused me to only marginally enjoy the novel even though I think she used some interesting and different elements to cause her criminal activity to take place.

I'm giving this novel three stars, but I would definitely tell any friend of mine the drawbacks which kept me from liking this book and certainly will keep me from reading previous or future novels in the series.

I received an e-ARC of this novel through NetGalley.

Diamonds & Dust (Victorian Murder Mystery: Stride & Cully Book 1), by Carol Hedges

When a horrific murder takes place on a dark night in 1860's London, it changes two women for ever. New light is cast upon past lives they thought they knew so well, and suddenly their futures become intertwined.

The death of her uncle will leave eighteen-year-old Josephine King an orphan, an heiress and the owner of a priceless diamond, The Eye of the Khan. For Lilith Marks, a chance finally arises to end her life as a highly paid prostitute and to prove herself as a serious businesswoman.

Set against the backdrop of the great gas-lit city, the two women are drawn together in their quest to discover just who killed the man they both loved.

Diamonds & Dust is a page-whizzing narrative, with an intricate and absorbing plot that entices you through the teeming streets of Victorian London. If Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle all washed up on a desert island, they might have come up with something like this.

Read all about it!
By Harold K. Rochelle
A fun, exciting read. Almost as if Conan-Doyle, Dickens and Christie decided to write about a young Miss Marple in Victorian England, trying to capture the Baskerville hound! Several side stories add flavor and entertainment. A glimpse into the upper and lower classes attempting to navigate the streets of sewage infested London in the middle of the 19th century. Definitely not a place I'd want to live, but a wonderful place to visit! A quite enjoyable read.

A film waiting for action
By Bargee
I hate it when I read a book so fast, but at the same time, I really can't stop myself! And Diamonds and Dust is that kind of book. What a romp! It's really great and is just waiting for a film to happen. I love the way it's written in the present tense and in scenes. It really is very filmic and as you read, you watch it all unfolding in your mind. But not just that, it's also an astute look at what life was about in Victorian London. I genuinely sympathised with Detective Jack Cully who on seeing the pointless, vacuous lives of the rich, ponders on the book he's just finished reading by one Karl Marx. I also liked the 'cameo' entries with real people like Charles Dickens. On the surface, it is a great and rollicking adventure in the literary tradition of Bram Stoker or Jekyll & Hyde, but Josephine and Isabella , Mrs Thorpe and Gussy, and even Lileth Marks could be from Georgette Heyer or Jane Austen novels. 'Oi', Annie and Mrs Hudson, on the other hand, have lovely Dickensian colour. As for the the scene setting, it is reminiscent of Victor Hugo at his richest...and so I could go on. There is much more to this book than its story, and below the surface lurks the rather chilling reality of 19th century London. This is a real historical novel written in great 21st century style with more than a touch of social comment thrown in. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done, Carol Hedges. This comes as highly recommended!

Fun Read with Strong Female Characters
By Marti
I will admit that I haven't read many books written in the Victorian era, but I have seen many documentaries on that time, and also fictional dramas. This book has the feel of that era.

I loved the lead female characters that come together to try to find the killer of Josephine King's uncle and sole relative. His mistress, Lilith Marks joins forces with Josephine.

There are minor characters in the story that bring out the way upper class women are viewed, and the whoring around of the single men. The story brings out the prudish times when you couldn't mention the word "leg." We learn about the strict things that the upper class must do during the mourning period: the clothes one must wear, keeping the window coverings closed, and many other customs of the time.

Ms. Hedges describes the gas lights on the streets at night and the industrial pollution in the air. The author also takes us from the top layer of society, down to the bottom, often homeless class of people. We see maids, whores, and various street people. We see the very rich that throw lavish parties and have so many servants that they have someone to dress them each day. We see the constant hunger of the lower class and the tables of the rich that sag with all of the food. The contrast between the two classes is often mentioned.

My only complaint about this book is that it ended sooner than I wanted! Would love to see another book with Lilith and Josephine as the main characters.

About the Author
George Augustus Moore (24 February 1852 – 21 January 1933) was an Irish novelist, short-story writer, poet, art critic, memoirist and dramatist. Moore came from a Roman Catholic landed family who lived at Moore Hall in Carra, County Mayo. He originally wanted to be a painter, and studied art in Paris during the 1870s. There, he befriended many of the leading French artists and writers of the day. As a naturalistic writer, he was amongst the first English-language authors to absorb the lessons of the French realists, and was particularly influenced by the works of Émile Zola. His writings influenced James Joyce, according to the literary critic and biographer Richard Ellmann, and, although Moore's work is sometimes seen as outside the mainstream of both Irish and British literature, he is as often regarded as the first great modern Irish novelist.

Groundbreaking work
By stoddard martin
This interlinked group of stories anticipates Joyce's 'Dubliners' by years and prefigures in many respects not only that book but its successor 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man'. Moore's accounts of mean Irish life are both tender and acute in analysis. The penultimate tale 'The Wild Goose' subsumes one of the finest uses in literature of the philosophy of Nietzsche, especially his famous lines on 'stellar friendship'. We see here a new 20th century impulse towards self-realization struggling against the nostalgia it inevitably entails, a condition of soul that would be so beautifully etched in 'The Dead' and in the peregrinations of Stephen Dedalus, as well as works that go beyond the Irish scene - Jack London too springs to mind: 'Oakland was only a place to start from'.

Quatrevingt-Treize (Annoté) (French Edition), by Victor Hugo

About the Author
The best-known of the French Romantic writers, Victor Hugo was a poet, novelist, dramatist, and political critic. Hugo was an avid supporter of French republicanism and advocate for social and political equality, themes that reflect most strongly in his works Les Mis?rables, Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame), and Le Dernier jour d'un condamn? (The Last Day of a Condemned Man). Hugo s literary works were successful from the outset, earning him a pension from Louis XVIII and membership in the prestigious Acad?mie fran?aise, and influencing the work of literary figures such as Albert Camus, Charles Dickens, and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Elevated to the peerage by King Louis-Philippe, Hugo played an active role in French politics through the 1848 Revolution and into the Second and Third Republics. Hugo died in 1885, revered not only for his influence on French literature, but also for his role in shaping French democracy. He is buried in the Panth?on alongside Alexandre Dumas and ?mile Zola.

Brilliant
By Historienne
I encountered this book while writing an honors undergraduate history thesis on the revolt in the Vendee--which is the setting for this book. Ninety-Three is both a literary masterpiece and an historical commentary ahead of its time. Hugo carefully balances his personal belief in the French Republic, and his distaste for the methods used by the Republicans in 1793. His characters are vivid allegories, and the novel is peppered with small parables. It is a story where the "giants" of Robespierre, Marat and Danton become less important than three small children, where the Republic of Swords must face the Republic of Ideas.

I highly recommend this for anyone studying the French Revolution. It is also a fine piece of prose.

Ayn Rand is the Authority for this review
By Adam N. Cassie
Refer to Ayn Rand's non-fiction bood entitled "The Romantic Manifesto" There's an excellent introduction to Victor Hugo's Ninety-Three. That's what made me want to read it and why I continue to read it over and over.

Novel of ideas
By John Hyatt
A novel about the French Revolution. More a novel of ideas than of action and character. The opposing ideas are interesting, but the characters lack rounded complexity.
