Plucky Characters, Interesting Story, and Peppered with Whimsy

Dragon Hyde is the entertaining first volume of what promises to be an exciting trilogy. This installment is gifted with plucky characters who inadvertently get into many more adventures than they intended. Anya White's delightful first book gives readers a peek at good stories to come from the mind of this dynamic eleven year-old author. I enjoyed reading this feisty fantasy - there is enough action here to keep readers like me engaged till the very end.
It is 1943 and World War II has just started. In France, young Essalina Harcourt finds the goings-on at her farm more disturbing than the war that just broke out. Alerted by a growing mound at her front yard that made her think the earth is falling, Essalina sends her mother out to investigate. Her mother returns to tell her there is a dragon on the loose in their farm, briefly mentions that Essalina's father was a Dragon Slayer, and that there will be NO MORE DISCUSSION ON THE MATTER. Her mother also starts hurriedly packing Essalina's bags in order to send her off to a finishing school run by the elegant Enerva Pierre, where it was thought Essalina would be safe. At first it sounded safe enough: Essalina was accepted because of her academic achievements, and with that comes room and board, a full curriculum with monthly field trips to the surrounding areas, and a meal plan that includes an extensive array of "delectable desserts, hand-baked by our very own Head Mistress Pierre". Everything is not what it seems however, but at first it starts with just "normal" trouble. Essalina soon discovers that she has an unintended talent for getting into trouble with the Headmistress and the school staff. It doesn't help either that her roommate is the Headmistress's daughter and doesn't get along with Essalina. There are odder things as well: those "delectable desserts" are plentiful and her classmates are all scarfing them up - except for Essalina, because they don't taste good to her at all! As more and more oddities pile up, it's all Essalina can do to try to keep her grades up, avoid getting into trouble with other students or the school staff, and quickly serve any detention time for trouble that she already got caught for. What Essalina doesn't know is that she is in for a big surprise: the "dragon on the loose" at her house may have followed her to school, which means Essalina is not safe at all!
This story is bursting with energy and as a reader I enjoy the frenzy! I admire the eleven year-old author's storytelling skills - I can see possible influences from J.K. Rowling, or Roald Dahl, or even Ludwig Bemelmans, but Ms. White puts her premise and plot together in a way that leaves her own unique stamp on the story. Her upbeat writing style keeps the pace brisk, and even if what I am reading is technically not an action scene (e.g. Essalina trying to gather desserts from different students), I still feel the frenetic energy crackling, as if there were explosions going off! The author also makes good use of her ability to trump stereotypes. Headmistresses, headmistress's lapdogs, dragons, surly cooks, and even witches get an extra special tweak unique to Ms. White's story that helps me as a reader remember the characters better.
I recommend Dragon Hyde to all readers who enjoy commendable storytelling skills and an endearing dash of whimsy. That dash of whimsy gives the story lots of personality, and lets Anya White deliver a memorable tale. I am excited to see what the next two volumes have to offer as well.
