Mysterium I: Rome, by Mitchel Fidel

Jesus of Nazareth has been dead for some 65 years. The eyewitnesses to this extraordinary life have died, often as martyrs, and only a scattered handful remain. Might anyone have resolved to interview those last few before it was too late, it being a matter of mind-boggling importance?
What if someone had?
Mysterium I: Rome presents the story of a young Roman scholar who determines to do precisely that. This sleuth who has the will and the means to comb the Roman Empire for answers is Theophilus, "Lover of God." Opening his very first scroll of Christian scripture, and finding his own name there, catalyzes a series of events that seemingly promises a life mission full of heroic discovery. But soon Theophilus has cause to wonder about the advisability of his investigation. Danger looms, while he is on the scent of the unfathomable in ominous cavities of a city where so very much is hidden. Catacombs. Forbidden archives. "Witches Hill," a.k.a. the Vatican.
In Rome, life is stupendously raw. Theophilus' adventures put him in congress with gladiators, prostitutes, torturers, crucifiers, conquerors, sorcerers, swindlers, schemers, and an aristocratic matron who insists that she is a daughter of the Beast. Pulled relentlessly toward ever more mystifying mysteries, Theophilus comes to realize that he has undertaken a quest after the secret of secrets.
Rome is the first book of a six-part Mysterium series.

I'm really looking forward to the continuation.

I don't usually read novels but this one caught my attention. A mission to go and interview the last surviving witnesses of Jesus Christ? Very interesting. Even though that doesn't exactly happen in this first section of the novel, and is all taking place in Rome instead, this look at life in ancient Rome is really pretty fascinating. So I'm looking forward to the follow-up books. It's like a good mystery that unfolds, very carefully laid out, and convincing too. Pretty lively and colorful, the way it's done. There's a lot packed into a relatively little book, so I'd even read it again, and understand a lot more the second time. This first time that I read it, I wanted to keep going and going. One bit of interesting storytelling about first century Christianity led to another, and I really didn't want to put it down. Like I said, I'm really looking forward to the continuation.

See for Yourself!
By Valerie Waroway
Theophilus is new to 99 AD Rome and wants to find out about the Jesus cult he's heard of. He's determined to get as much information as he can.He reads the earliest Christian books and still wonders what Jesus was like. So, he goes on a quest and searches for people who could help. He visits the library,a bath, the catacombs, a performance at the Colosseum, and a brothel, and yes, he does participate in the latter. Everywhere he goes he meets people you've heard of and encounters parts of the early church history that you may not have heard of. Theophilus loves explaining words and concepts and giving detailed descriptions of people and places. He makes make them come alive. I felt as if I were there myself. I look forward to the next book in the series where he continues his quest. This book is full of information and is a lot of fun to read. See for yourself!

Ancient Rome not for the fainthearted
By Jeanne
I love history and this novel is packed with terrific descriptions of ancient Rome, intriguing facts and fascinating word origins. The main character, Theopolis, a young scholar, takes on the daunting task of digging up eyewitness accounts of the real Jesus of Nazareth and his early followers. The novel is set in a time period tantalizingly close to the lifetime of Jesus and his disciples but far enough that legends, myths, and self serving acolytes have blurred reliable historical information. Theopolis is in for quite an adventure. I really learned a lot.
Mysterium I: Rome is in the genre of The Secret Chord and People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks. Will keep my eyes out for Fidel's next book in this series.
