Kui is pushing her, Ana is holding back, and between the two women there’s much to be resolved.
The plum tree and the manuka have gone, but a lemon tree thrives. The mystery surrounding the last voyage of the Marakihau may never be solved; but if Ana returns, their friendship and some things from the past can be recovered. Can’t they?

“I love Every Five Minutes from the same Author, and am
delighted to find this book shows her beautiful writing just
as well. The characters are very real and there’s a similar
delicate touch to the prose. Bronwyn Elsmore has a real gift
for saying just enough without too much.
Backwards Into the Future is a novel with the feel of a
memoir about it – I find the combination very appealing.”

About the Author
When carried away on a flight of fancy, Bronwyn Elsmore might say that if she’d been gifted with a better voice, she might have chosen to be an opera singer. Sadly for her, that wasn’t the case, but luckily she found she could write. A list of awards confirms that. Throughout her writing career Bronwyn has written over a wide variety of genres – articles, short stories, poetry, stage-plays, fiction and non-fiction. Since that didn’t pay many bills, along the way she spent many years as an academic. Currently, though, she spends most of her writing time on fiction. When she’s not writing? You might spot her feeding neighbourhood and stray cats, or possibly adding to the list of countries visited to date. And reading, of course. Bronwyn is a fifth generation New Zealander. She grew up in a small town quite like the one at the centre of Backwards Into the Future. This novel draws on the bi-racial Maori-Pakeha cultural heritage of that country.

Growing up Gently in 1960s New Zealand
By KiwiKathleen
This is a beautiful, gentle book. It's told through the now and through the memories of Mary, a woman who left the town to go nursing and has never returned other than for funerals - don't we all know the story?! The 'now' seems to be very much the present time, and Mary is a Pakeha (white New Zealander of European descent). She remembers how she and Ana, a Maori girl, became inseparable friends, of how Mary and Ana were taught together by Ana's grandmother, Kui. She taught them all the stories of their local countryside - like the taniwha from Maungatoka who are always fighting; 'Maeropango and Mokowhiri [keep] going over the boundary into each other's territories and causing trouble ... they tear up the earth and it all washes down here.' She also taught them how to find and harvest, and prepare, plants for medicines, and the chants that go with each process.

Now Mary has been called by Kui to return, and despite everybody saying that "you can't go back, you know," she does. And while she's waiting for Ana to also return, she becomes friends with Amiria, Ana's younger cousin. It's their coffees and fruit processing sessions that spur a lot of Mary's memories.

I'm picking Mary is around my age, maybe a little older but basically my contemporary, so this took me right back to my childhood. For a younger reader it's a marvellous delving into country-town New Zealand in the 1960s. Read this and you'll know what it was like - the way of life, the thoughts, feelings and aspirations of those of us growing up in that time. The cross-cultural friendship is also written beautifully, along with the occasional discomforts but wrapped up in the love and generosity of the old woman.

One proverb struck me particularly:
"Nau to rourou, naku te rourou, ka ora te manuhiri."
"Your basket, my basket, the visitor..."
"Ae. With your small basket and my small basket, the visitors will live. That is to say, if everyone contributes what they can, there'll be enough for everyone to eat."
Two girls from different backgrounds, each contributing to the friendship> I do hope they get to meet again.

By-gone days in small-town New Zealand
By Carolyn
Mary and Ana were best friends, growing up in small-town New Zealand in the late 1950s-early 1960s. ‘Backwards into the Future’ begins when a middle-aged Mary returns to Waimamae after many years away nursing in New Zealand and abroad. Although most of the people she remembers from her childhood have died, she recalls them all very clearly. The story unfolds in a series of evocative episodes from Mary and Ana’s childhood, from primary school through to their last few days at secondary school. It is a time of party-line telephones, news-reels at the cinema, long-drop toilets, free milk at primary school and panama hats at secondary school, two-tone Zephyr Zodiacs and family fireworks parties on Guy Fawkes night. ‘Backwards into the Future’ is a by-gone New Zealand that older readers will recall with affection, while younger ones will be intrigued by it. The story is warm and loving and largely happy although there is sadness and tragedy too. Mary and Ana lose touch with each other when they finish school and woven through ‘Backwards into the Future’ is the thread of Mary’s longing for Ana to be back in Waimamae: this is heightened by Mary’s conviction that Ana’s late grandmother is also calling to her to come home. Throughout, why Mary and Ana drifted apart and what has become of Ana remains tantalising unexplained. Mary carefully gains the confidence of one of Ana’s cousins in her quest to find out how to contact Ana again, and I loved the optimistic note on which the book ended. Maori culture and the Maori language is an integral part of ‘Backwards into the Future’ and I feel a short glossary of some of the terms used would be useful for readers who are unfamiliar with Maori.

We should always remember the past... it is how we go forward.
By M. Thornburg
Good friends often stay good friends throughout their lives. Even though they may see each other only infrequently, they stay in touch, share their joys and sorrows, and – when they do meet – they pick up their friendship again as if they'd never been apart.

With best friends, it's a little more complicated.

"Backwards into the Future" is the story of Mary and Ana, best friends all through school in their small New Zealand town from the late 1950s to middle '60s. Their friendship bridges a cultural divide between the native Maori and the Pakeha (European descended) New Zealanders, and it's the tension implicit in this divide that pervades their story and drives it forward – or is it backwards? – into a changed future.

Like Bronwyn Elsmore's earlier novel "Every Five Minutes," this one is written with a sure, skilled, and sensitive hand. Elsmore knows when to show the finest details, when to drop hints, and when to leave open spaces that readers are compelled to navigate on their own. As other reviewers of "Backwards into the Future" have said, the story is told gently but never sentimentally. I was pulled into it immediately and it didn't release me until I'd read the last page. I recommend it highly.
