Great Novel, Terrible Edition

As for the story, those familiar with Marryat know what to expect, and this novel delivers; those new to his writing are in for a treat. My complaint isn't with the novel, but with the edition itself. This isn't a "real" book with binding, but that's okay; the price is right. The problem, though, is that the print is very, very light. I've bought four of Marryat's novels from this same publisher, and every copy is the same -- the type is so light that it's almost illegible. So do read Marryat, by all means, but I'd strongly suggest buying a different edition. I'd have returned these except that they're quite large -- 8/12 x 11 -- and so it would have cost more to return than the refund. Anyway, enjoy Marryat, but buyer beware...

Another Fine Sea Story from Marryat

A fine read for those who enjoyed the Hornblower series, O'Brian's Aubrey series, the Kydd books and the like. Although not told with the dramatic flare of these great historical sea fiction writers, it contains many of the same elements including sea battles, mutiny, intrigue, a dash of romance and those qualities that make it hard to put the book down at times. Always a valuable factor in Marryat's books is that he actually participated in the Age of Sail era. He even captained his own ship in the Royal Navy which lends much credence to the trials at sea, in that hard-living bygone time, that are also found in his novels.

Lots of action, of course...and the good prevail!

As I have noted for several of his novels, Marryat's work is not superior, but it is entertaining and it is very interesting once you place him in context. Clearly, he is a forerunner of O'Brian and Forster and a father to all those whom they are fathers to themselves. All his works follow a similar pattern and--as many have noted--character development is not a strength of his work. Rather, the stories are entertaining, formulaic adventures, ones where young folks (usually males) mature and develop through a series of challenging events. Evil is evil and good is good. The youth learns and is, in the end, magnificently rewarded for having chosen the right path. Given the price (free!), you can hardly go wrong with any of these.
