A terrified young woman asks Miss Silver for help unmasking someone who has threatened her life.
Rachel Traherne does not want to meet Maud Silver. She does not want to tell her that someone has threatened her life, because she does not want that dreadful fact to be true. But see Miss Silver she must, for the stout, old-fashioned detective is the only person in London who may be able to keep her safe.
Rachel has been receiving threatening letters about her deceased father's fortune. The first two letters were vague; the third said simply, "Get ready to die." Since then she has been nearly killed three times: first by a flight of sabotaged stairs, second by fire, and third by a box of poisoned chocolates. She fears it may be a family member, jealous of her inheritance and willing to kill to get it. But who could it be? Miss Silver is going to find out.

An Early Miss Silver Mystery
By Shirley Schwartz
I can't believe that I'm the first to review a book that was written in 1939. If you are a Miss Silver fan, then you should read this book. This is an early volume from the series. It's important to see her development throughout the many years that Ms. Wentworth wrote of her. This book, like many in the series is a little dated, but it's still a smashing good mystery. Ms. Wentworth is a fine example of golden age detective story writing and quite incomparable when it comes to writing British country-house murder mysteries. In this book Miss Silver is asked by Rachel Treherne to come to her manor house to determine who among her large extended family is trying to kill her. Miss Silver investigates in her own unique style, and quickly determines who the culprit is, but then it's a matter of getting the proof.

One of the Earliest and Strongest in the Series
By drkhimxz
This third Miss Silver mystery is one of the best in the long series. Mostly, this is because the author creates a number of characters with more complexity than usual and gives Miss Silver more of a role but less dominance over her surroundings than became customary later. The central figure, inheritor of Great Wealth but also inheritor of a mandate from her father to use it both for high social causes but also for the nurturance of her older sister and other relations to varying degrees, is very well drawn to a degree that gives the book its superior qualities. We are shown clearly her strength and weaknesses in dealing with her mandate and the peculiar individualities of the family to whom she has devoted her emotions and part of her wealth. The family itself, though drawn with less detail, is still admirably portrayed, Miss Silver is brought in quite early as the heroine becomes persuaded that she may be the target of a killer within the family grouping...while remaining incredulous that such could be the case. The give and take between she and Miss Silver is rather unique for the series.
The book holds one's interest through to the denouement. In the anticlimactic concluding scene, the reaffirmation of traditional (for this era) relationships and division of responsibilities between men and women might rub some readers the wrong way:however, they do fit the times and the place, as well as the attitudinal structure of Miss Silver herself.
Those familiar with the series are quite likely to enjoy this one. Newcomers are likely to find this a good one with which to begin their reading.

Dear Me!
By Commenter77
This features one of your more reluctant wealthy clients, an irritating type who wants relief from her terrors with little or no alteration from herself. She lives in a household of mostly dependent (on her) relatives. By repeated and strikingly obvious incidents in and around this same household, she can no longer deny that someone is trying to kill her. Yet, she is absurdly indignant when Miss Silver attempts to square her with the obvious (sorry toots, but it's got to be one of them). This basically continues, barring a few lucid moments of sense. I've always found that kind of thing irritating and it wasn't any better here. She has other false assumptions toward her obligations to the brood of mostly insincere leeches. She finally gets her head on straight, but we have to endure to the end for that to take place. Nonetheless, Miss Silver is strongly on board for this one, and it may be her launch into her subsequent popularity. Every one of the character types is familiar if you've watched many family circle dramas, especially old movies and more especially old British movies. Interesting plotting and development as part of the process of the honing of the art and establishment of the Miss Silver persona.
