Solid book on hiking the AT, more thorough than some others I've seen.
By BruceK
I will come back and review this more completely, but I have now read several
AT hiking books. I am interested in the subject and the project but I have not gotten
very much from the books. Most of them are very superficial and patchy.
I just got this book an hour or so ago and have been listening to it on Kindle text-
to-speech on my Kindle Fire HD 10, which is great. The voice is almost like an
audiobook and following along with my eyes make the ideas sink in better.
"A Sign Of Madness: Re-Hiking the 2,185 Mile Appalachian Trail" is logical, linear
and well done ... but I have to note early grammatical errors and typos - this
needs proofread.
But just in a few pages I can tell this is the kind of book I am looking for. He covers
some hardware failures, suggestions for hikers, and even sticks up for socialism,
which in this year of Bernie Sanders running for President I was admiring of. I think
it takes a lot of guts to challenge an old soldier on the AT, and write about it and
how people do not understand their best interests - from just a logical point of view.
There are good solid suggestions here, and a modeling of the attitude on needs to
undertake this hike. Don't know yet if I will do it, or if I will find a way to work up to
it, but this book is the first hiking books that has been more than fluff, and I can see
that in the early chapters.
More later.

I read a lot of hiking books and usually enjoy vicariously walking along with the authors
By Amazon Customer
I had a hard time relating to the author. The book has some insightful and humorous moments, but most of the time the author is complaining and judgmental of other hikers. He needs to remember that each person hikes their on hike. And his comments about seventeen year old girls and other women flirting with him are just embarrassing. I read a lot of hiking books and usually enjoy vicariously walking along with the authors. I couldn't wait for this one to be over.

A well written book, that gives a very good account of hiking the A.T.
By DCM767
I’ve read at least 12 books on the A.T. and “A sign of Madness” is in my top 3. Like another review said; he doesn’t ramble, trying to name as many thru-hikers with trail names.
I am a few years older than Mark, but can relate to his need for company while balancing solitude.
He effortlessly conveys what it is REALLY like to hike the trail. It is very difficult. I know, because I was on it this year, and during a rainstorm and the rocks of good old Rocksylvania, fell and sustained a moderate concussion.
He has a sharp wit; very intelligent, thought out humor just touching on sarcasm. He makes his story 3 dimensional. I felt like I was walking right behind him. He did this ‘walk’ 30 or so years earlier, and decided in his 50’s if he could still do it again. He realizes he is not the same young man back then, and accepts his aging. I liked that.
Like a friend told me the other day; “This getting old business, couldn’t come at a worse time!”
I enjoyed his insights as to why people hike the trail, why some (younger) hikers ZOOM thru the trail, not noticing the beauty around them.
I encountered many of these young bucks, who thought only in miles not memories. “Mile Eaters'
If you want a very good overview of what to expect on the trail, I would highly recommend this book!! David M
