The Mystery of Edwin Drood (Illustrated and Annotated), by Charles Dickens

The Mystery of Edwin Drood is the final book by Charles Dickens. The novel was unfinished at the time of Dickens's death (9 June 1870) and his ending for it is unknown.
Though the novel is named after the character Edwin Drood, the story focuses on Drood's uncle, precentor, choirmaster and opium addict, John Jasper, who is in love with his pupil, Rosa Bud. Miss Bud, Drood's fiancée, has also caught the eye of the high-spirited and hot-tempered Neville Landless, who comes from Ceylon with his twin sister, Helena. Landless and Drood take an instant dislike to one another. Drood later disappears under mysterious circumstances.
The story is set in Cloisterham, a lightly disguised Rochester. Mr Crisparkle, for example, lives in a clergy house in Minor Canon Corner, which corresponds to a genuine address within the precincts of Rochester Cathedral, namely Minor Canon Row.
This edition has been formatted for your Kindle, with an active table of contents. Review
'' (Audiobook narrator) David Thorn reads Dickens's last, incomplete, novel, a dark romance involving a disappearance and possible murder, with a variety of voices and accents worthy of a multicast performance and an extraordinary range of color and expression. His reading, complex but neither forced nor affected, is both intimate and vivid, enlivening passages that might have been dull. A 2006 Audie Award Finalist.'' --AudioFile

From the Back Cover
'The Mystery of Edwin Drood, ' Dickens's last novel, lay unfinished at his death. Speculation remains rife as to its probable conclusion, but should not distract the reader from the merits of what was actually written. The ancient city of Cloisterham, its human frailty, and the lawful life, is an effective background for what Dickens's daughter called a tale of 'the tragic secrets of the human heart'. This edition contains Dickens's working plans for the novel, the original design, and eight of the original illustrations. The text is that of the Clarendon edition.

The Game Is Afoot, But We'll Never Know the Outcome
By James Paris
It is so strange to see a long, well-plotted novel suddenly come to a dead stop. (Of a projected twelve episodes, Dickens wrote six before his death.) The title character is either murdered or missing, and a large cast of characters in London and Cloisterham (Dickens's Rochester) are involved in their own way in discovering what happened to Edwin Drood.
There is first of all John Jasper, an opium addict who suspiciously loves Drood's ex-fiancee; there is a nameless old woman who dealt him the opium who is trying to nail Jasper; there is a suspicious pile of quicklime Jasper notices during a late night stroll through the cathedral precincts; there is Durdles who knows all the secrets of the Cathedral of Cloisterham's underground burial chambers; there is the "deputy," a boy in the pay of several characters who has seen all the comings and goings; there are the Anglo-Indian Landless twins, one of whom developed a suspicious loathing for Drood; there is the lovely Rosebud, unwilling target of every man's affections; and we haven't even begun talking about Canon Crisparkle, Datchery, Tartar, and a host of other characters. All we know is that the game is afoot, but we'll never know the outcome.
It would have been nice to know how Dickens tied together all these threads, but we can still enjoy THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD because -- wherever Dickens was heading with it -- it is very evidently the equal of his best works. Life is fleeting, and not all masterpieces are finished.

Drood Is So Good
By IRA Ross
It is a tribute to Charles Dickens' reputation that to this day this unfinished novel, a mystery no less, still garners such speculation as to who allegedly murdered Edwin Drood. There are organizations created for the sole purpose of analyzing the novel and to theorizing whom the culprit may have been, if indeed there really was a culprit. After all, only Drood's watch and his shirt pin are produced, not his body.
As in all of Dickens' novels, the characterizations are the thing. You have the innocent young woman with the somewhat eccentric guardian and his Bob Cratchitlike assistant. There is the dark, possibly unfairly accused, but hot headed antagonist of Drood. Then there is Drood's brooding choirmaster uncle, John Jasper, who frequents opium dens, and who may or may not have ulterior motives in his seeking revenge. Durdles, the stone mason, and a somewhat weird character, provides some chilling comic relief in cemetery scenes with his stone throwing assistant. There are also the typical Dickensian characters, which includes a snooty older woman, a class conscious, spinsterish school mistress, and in a hilarious restaurant scene, an unappreciated, hard working "flying waiter" and a lazy, wise acre "stationary waiter."
It is a shame that Dickens died before he could complete "Edwin Drood." What is here are the beginnings of an exploration of man's dual nature, a journey into "the heart of darkness" so to speak.

"I have been taking opium for a pain, an agony that sometimes overcomes me."
By Mary Whipple
Set in Cloisterham, a cathedral town, Dickens's final novel, unfinished, introduces two elements unusual for Dickens--opium-eating and the church. In the opening scene, John Jasper, music teacher and soloist in the cathedral choir, awakens from an opium trance in a flat with two other semi-conscious men and their supplier, an old woman named Puffer, and then hurries off to daily vespers.

Jasper, aged twenty-six, is the uncle and guardian of Edwin Drood, only a few years younger. Drood has been the fiancé of Rosa Bud for most of his life, an arrangement made by his and Rosa's deceased fathers to honor their friendship, and the wedding is expected within the year. Jasper, Rosa's music teacher, is secretly in love with her, though she finds him repellent.

When two orphans, Helena and Neville Landless, arrive in Cloisterham, Helena and Rosa become friends, and Neville finds himself strongly attracted to the lovely Rosa. Ultimately, the hot-tempered Neville and Drood have a terrible argument in which Neville threatens Drood before leaving town on a walking trip. Drood vanishes the same day. Apprehended on his trip, Neville is questioned about Drood's disappearance, and Jasper accuses him of murder.

Tightly organized to this point, the novel shows Jasper himself to be a prime suspect, someone who could have engineered the evidence against Neville, but Dickens unexpectedly introduces some new characters at this point--the mysterious Dick Datchery and Tartar, an old friend of Rev. Mr. Crisparkle, minor canon at the cathedral. Puffer, the opium woman, is reintroduced and appears set to play a greater role, since she solicits information from the semi-conscious Jasper and secretly follows him. This is the halfway point in the projected novel, and Dickens clearly planned to develop these new (or reintroduced) characters to deepen the mystery.

More modern in many ways than his previous novels, the characters here are not simple stereotypes--some are good people who have real flaws and make mistakes. Dickens's tying of Jasper to the church choir, where he was a soloist, suggests some examination of the theme of hypocrisy, in which the good Mr. Crisparkle would be Jasper's antithesis. The opium scenes, vividly drawn, carry the unusual suggestion that opium leads to a kind of intoxication similar to that of alcohol, and Dicken does not use these scenes to offer dire warnings about the drug--at least at this point. Especially intriguing because it is unfinished, this novel continues to fascinate mystery lovers and literary scholars more than a century after its first publication. Mary Whipple

European Wars and History - Light and Easy to Read
By Amazon Customer
As a lightweight history buff, I enjoy reading the fictionalized stories of historical Europe and America. This one tells the story of a young man going to battle in the War of the Spanish Succession - a little known era to me. John Churchill, Lord Marlborough, was the primary English commander who tried to unite the armies and leaders of Holland, Hapsburg, Hanover and Prussia against the French and Spanish. The bloody wars and seiges lasted from 1702 to 1713. The book describes many of the battles, the terrain, the planning, and the bloodshed.

The "Cornet" of the story was young Rupert Holliday, who survives duels, war, prison, love, Louis IV, battles, escapes and recaptures. Along the way, author Henty gives great descriptions of famous battles that occurred. I followed some of them by googling various locations and battles and it appears fairly true to the real stuff. George A. Henty (1832-1902) wrote numerous other adventure books. I thoroughly enjoyed the book!

Eighteenth century epic.
By Paul Arthur Theoret
A captivating tale of war and love in an eighteenth century setting during the war between England and France. A charming swashbucklimg hero that continually survives impossible odds such as those Hollywood film-makers love. Have fun!

Great Book
By J Davis
This Henty book is one of the best. If I had to recommend a G.A. Henty book to you, only two would rank higher than "The Cornet of Horse." The top two are "Rujub The Juggler" and "The Tiger of Mysore."

Two veterans of World War I fight for love and honor in a Caribbean country torn apart by rebellion

Lt. Robert McAllister of the US Marines first encounters Paul Blanchard on a parade ground in Belgium in 1918. Awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Victoria Cross for his service at Ypres and Passchendaele, the British sergeant coughs blood onto his commanding officer’s boots and curses the war.

A year later, McAllister commands a platoon of marines in occupied Haiti, where a peasant uprising threatens to topple the American-backed regime. Led by a charismatic revolutionary named Martel, the rebels, known as the Cacos, have a secret weapon: a white Caco who fights with a terrifying combination of cunning and courage.

When the mysterious mercenary abducts a marine colonel’s daughter, McAllister rushes to save her. It is more than his duty—he and Caroline Barbour are in love. The deeper he journeys into enemy territory, however, the more McAllister realizes how little he understands, not just about this country of breathtaking beauty and staggering violence, but about his own heart’s desire. The biggest shock of all, though, waits for him at the end of the jungle trail: Paul Blanchard, hero of the Great War.

Rich in the exotic colors of the Caribbean, A Rendezvous in Haiti is an enthralling tale of adventure, romance, and rebellion from master storyteller Stephen Becker.

From Publishers Weekly
This slim, powerful tale places Becker (The Chinese Bandit, The Blue-Eyed Shan firmly in the tradition of Conrad, Greene and le Carre. Lt. Robert MacAllister of the U.S. Marines is in Haiti in 1919 to help quell a peasant revolution led by the black leader Martel. Caroline Barbour, a colonel's daughter in love with MacAllister, is kidnapped by Martel's white military leader, Blanchard, who reveals himself and his past to her on their long journey to Martel's village. MacAllister also is traveling to the village, led by the black priest Scarron. Convinced that Blanchard is dangerous to his efforts, Martel agrees to let MacAllister murder the white revolutionary and take the girl back to Port-au-Prince. Both Blanchard and Martel are killed, while Caroline is left unharmed but not untoucheda condition Becker's readers will share. As vivid and steamy as the climate of Haiti, this tale stakes out its true domain in the landscape of the soul. With stunning clarity, Becker examines his characters' shifting emotional allegiances as the yawning chasms between powerful and powerless, black and white, civilized and primitive, are bridged in a network of individual attachments and understandings.

From Library Journal
Two men, allies in World War I, find themselves on opposite sides in an attempted Haitian revolution. They are more than just enemies: The renegade Blanchard kidnaps Caroline, McAllister's fiance. The mission to rescue her, headed by McAllister and a local Haitian priest, is successful. Or is it? Caroline's experiences increase her understanding of the Haitians and create feelings of attraction, compassion, and loathing for the mercenary Blanchard. By providing contrasting cultural perspectives, this novel communicates some of the ethos of the Haitian culture and develops the intrigue, adventure, and romance that are the book's success. Disappointingly, it does not probe more deeply into significant questions concerning cultural biases that are briefly raised. For large collections. Andrew Peters, Pioneer Multi-Cty. Review
“A Rendezvous in Haiti is literary fiction at its most extroverted: an old-fashioned adventure novel, a landscape novel, a novel with such a good plot that even readers of the Victorian novel will admire it, a novel with heroic characters, and a novel that upholds Stephen Becker’s high standards for language.” —John Irving

“Brilliant, passionately involving . . . At his best, Becker changes the way you look at the world.” —Pat Conroy

“Rich atmospherics . . . Told with economy and style.” —Kirkus Reviews

Praise for Stephen Becker
“Stephen Becker said that a writer, or any artist, should want to accomplish four things with his work—educate, impress, edify, and entertain. An artist can make a living, he said, by doing any one of those four well. A good artist does at least two. A master, like Becker himself, does all four, and well.” —Joe Haldeman

This Becker book is interesting, but not even close to his best: China Bandit. Still, it has a good story and moves along well.

Henry V was a man whose charm and military genius - and concern for his subjects - made him one of the most popular kings in English history.

Set in the lusty and tumultuous fifteenth century, this superb novel traces the brilliant career of the all-conquering victor of Agincourt.

Among the last of the great medieval rulers and the first of the ardent nation builders, Henry V is seen from several perspectives: his queen; his beautiful Welsh mistress, Morgan; his court jester, the fool; a comrade-in-arms; and his own point of view as both boy and man.

They illuminate the many sides of Henry V's personality - the devil-may-care prince portrayed by Shakespeare, the bold hero of Agincourt, the husband of Katharine of Valois, and the warrior-peacemaker who welded England, Wales, and France into a single kingdom.

Martha Rofheart goes behind the textbook facade of history and tells the story of the real Henry, a man of fierce pride and strong passions, to discover how ‘Fortune Made His Sword’.

She describes how Henry won and lost the beautiful Morgan ab Owen and how he later found brief happiness in the arms of his young French Queen.

‘Fortune Made His Sword’ is a thrilling historical tale of adventure, endeavour and intrigue. It was originally published as ‘Cry “God for Harry”’.

Praise for Martha Rofheart:

From the Inside Flap
Fortune made his sword is spellbinding reading, and the picture Martha Rofheart paints of the hero-king, Henry V, is totally hypnotic in it's appeal. The book brings Henry magically to life in a multifaceted novel filled with turmoil, violence and romance, and it marks the debut of a major new talent in the arena of historical fiction.      This is an entertaining and skillful recreation of the life and times of a man whose charm and military genius -- and concern for his subjects -- made him one of the most popular kings in English history. The story brings to life not only the man, but one of the most fantastic periods in the fifteenth century.     Among the last of the great medieval rulers and the first of the ardent nation builders, Henry V is seen from several perspectives: his queen; his beautiful Welsh mistress, Morgan; his court jester, the fool; a comrade-in-arms; and his own point of view as both boy and man.     As actors in this immense drama, they illuminate the many sides of Henry V's personality -- the devil-may-care prince portrayed by Shakespeare, the bold hero of Agincourt, the husband of Katherine of Valois,  and the warrior-peacemaker who welded England, Wales and France into a single kingdom.     FORTUNE MADE HIS SWORD will prove a compelling reading experience for everyone who enjoys a good story told with felicity and a fine regard for historical accuracy.

About the Author
Writing is a second career for Martha Rofheart. She spent her earlier years in the theater, playing with such stars as the Lunts and Helen hays. Familiarity with Shakespearean roles, in particular the Chronicle plays, led her to the writing of this novel.     Miss Rofheart was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but much of her background is Welsh. The legend and history of Wales which appear in this novel were learned first at her grandfather's knee. This is her first novel.

A fine and entertaining historical novel
By strega2
I first picked this book up at a library sale, and was rewarded with one of the most exciting and well-written historical novels I've yet read. Rofheart tells the story of the young Henry V, and makes the story of his brief but remarkable life a tale that pulls you in from the first page. And there is an added treat for the legions of fans of Anya Setion's "Katherine": her character is given a major place in this novel, vivid, warm and very real, from her marriage to John of Gaunt to her death. A first-rate biographical novel, and a must for fans of English historical fiction.

Definite "Must Read" for History Fans
By Michael J. Lyons
Just when I feared I had read "all" the truly good historical fiction writers, I find a new treasure trove: Martha Rofheart

In my opinion, her style rivals that of Llewellen, Penman, etc certainly for quality and re-reading. It may seem a bit drier, but I think that has more to do with changes in the genre since the '70s. (when it was written)

As for this book, I loved it. Rofheart's depiction of Henry V and his life and loves brought him to life for me, as Sharon Kay Penman did for Richard III, Edward IV, and others.

It is told from 5 different points of view at different times in Henry's life: Himself at boyhood, His first love Morgan ap Owen of his teens, Up to his last days.

Wonderful story, to be savored rather than gobbled :)

Henry V Brought To Life
By Miranda Good
I recently read Ian Mortimer's excellent biography "The Fears of Henry IV" and became fascinated by the story of that "usurper king," so it made sense to continue on with the story of his son, Henry V, champion of Agincourt. Rofheart's offering, although fiction rather than straight biography, richly fills the bill. Told by separate narrators - Henry himself, his Welsh mistress, his father's fool, a knight-at-arms and his young French queen - the story unfolds semi-chronologically and succeeds in describing Henry and his medieval world from differing viewpoints. The writing here is literate and unforced; the dialogue rings true; the historical background is essentially accurate; and the author richly brings these people to life. For lovers of historical fiction, there aren't many better than this one.

True air of British superiority
By H. Schneider
George Gissing was a man with many worldly troubles. Foremost among them was his tendency for calamitous marriages. Towards the end of his too short life, he was lucky and happy to find a stable relationship. This novel was written during that time, near his end.
In Gissing's world view, the 'crown of life' is a relationship based on love. Arranged marriages are not totally rejected, but they are second class affairs. Marriage without the ideal partner is equivalent to defeat. But then, doesn't practical wisdom agree with pop philosophy, as per 'if you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with'? What should be done?

In this novel, a struggling young man sets his mind, quite arbitrarily, on gaining one particular woman's affection. It looks like mission impossible, for social reasons, but he doesn't give up and keeps dreaming and trying for years.
The target woman was a tease when they met, while the man was a spineless nobody. Both were very young, and both are shown to mature very well with the years.

Other social matters play into the plot: birth out of wedlock, the scandal of alleged adultery and of divorce. Next to social mores, politics is a main theme. Subjects of the time, like the growth of the British Empire, or Irish Home Rule, are continuously talked about. We are in the years 1886 to 1894. British imperialists are full of 'England über alles' bluster. Or should I call it British Exceptionalism? The good, sensitive people in the story retain an admirable, silent skepticism.

While this is not among Gissing's better known novels, it doesn't deserve to be ignored or forgotten. Though I could find a few minor reasons for dissatisfaction, I enjoyed the book enough for 5 stars. Actually I read the free kindle edition, not this hardcover, but I didn't want my review to be alone...

Gissing's Crown of Life
By Robin Friedman
Best-known for "New Grub Street" and "The Odd Women", the Victorian author George Gissing (1857 -- 1903) wrote more than twenty novels during his short life. One of Gissing's neglected works is "The Crown of Life" published in 1899, late in his career. I wanted to visit Gissing again and to reread this novel.

For Gissing and this novel, the "crown of life" is true romantic love. Gissing explores what he often sees and in his wiser moments criticizes as the tension and dichotomy between romantic love and sexuality in many of his books. In "The Crown of Life", romance and idealism appear to win at the end, unlike the result in most of Gissing's books. Gissing wrote the book after two dismal marriages, when he met and fell in love with a woman, Gabrielle Fleury, to whom he could respond on an intellectual as well as physical level. Gabrielle Fleury, had been translating Gissing's books into French. He would remain with Gabrielle for the rest of his life. In a letter, Gissing wrote of his aim in writing this book.

"Under the guise of fiction, this book deals with the most solemn questions of life, and in no light spirit. I have not felt a disagreeable contrast between this work and the sad realities which have fallen upon us. For it has never been my habit to write flippantly, idly. I have never written only to gain money, to please the foolish. And my reward is that -- however poor what I have done -- I do not feel it ignoble."

The book tells of the eight-year courtship by a young man, Piers Otway of a woman named Irene Derwent. Otway is the illegitimate son of a middle-class scholar and former political activist and supporter of liberal positions. When the novel opens, he is a youth of 21, taken with the idea of love, but studying hard to pass the civil service examination for a secure government career. While his is boarding with old friends in the suburbs, he meets a visitor, Irene, and is immediately and inexplicably smitten. Otway is so taken with Irene that he can no longer concentrate on his studies. He gives up the civil service exam and goes into business instead for the Russian office of a large firm. Irene is cool, proper, and polished and from an upper-class background. She flirts mildly with Otway but rebukes him for a minor gaffe during a social affair. The relationship appears to be an end before it begins, particularly because Irene soon makes a promising engagement with a rising young man in Britain's colonial empire. But Otway perseveres in his dreams.

In addition to the developing the story of Piers and Irene, the novel has a political component. Gissing wrote the book after the Russian Tsar, Nicholas II, had proposed a disarmament conference as part of a claimed campaign for world peace. Gissing called "The Crown of Life" his "anti-jingo novel." The book is critical of British imperialism and of the expansion of the British empire under large, unrestrained capitalism. Gissing feared with substantial justification that imperialism would soon lead to war. The anti-jingoism of the book is not fully integrated with the love story. While working is Russia, Piers becomes taken with the Russian peace movement and with individuals living loosely in the manner of Tolstoy. The many characters in the novel discuss and debate British imperialism at length. Several of the characters in the book, including Irene's fiancé and one of her erstwhile suitors, are involved in promoting British colonial interests while one particularly detestable character is involved in arms manufacture. With a limited degree of success, the novel tries to show that the aim of many people in settling for a life of drudgery and for less that full romantic love in the personal lives is tied to the colonialism, impersonality, and warlike tendencies of British late nineteenth-century capitalism.

The strongest scenes of the novel focus on Piers Otway as a lonely young man in both Britain and Russia. Otway must deal with his sexual needs while he dreams of Irene from afar and stumbles through to success in business. He is plagued by his illegitimate birth, by his lack of inheritance, and by scandals involving his two legitimate but wastrel elder brothers. Otway perseveres in his goal of finding true love as the most worthwhile endeavor of life and ultimately succeeds in winning Irene's hand. Ever the realist, Gissing fills his book with pictures of unhappy marriages and of couples who compromise themselves and marry for something less that idealized love. Both Otway and Irene almost succumb to the temptation to compromise at several points during the story.

With many interesting scenes, ideas and passages in the novel, the courtship between Piers and Irene in unconvincing and unappealing. Young Piers is in love with the ideal of love and his lengthy idealization of Irene is forced. In the eight years between meeting Irene and betrothal, Piers does little more physically than touch her hand while dealing otherwise with the demands of sexuality that both Gissing and his protagonist know all-too-well. It is difficult to see what the all-too-prim and perfect Irene does to merit such devotion. Piers' idealization of the young lady does not make her likeable or desirable to the reader. To her credit, Irene develops a sense of individuality during the book as she breaks off with her fiancé upon realizing that his feelings for her verge on the conventional and the superficial. But this is insufficient to support Piers' love and his years of courtship and erotic neglect. The many bad marriages in the book together with some of the minor characters, including a bohemian painter of female nudes, suggest the price of dividing one's sexual from one's idealizing nature for so long. The novel ends in triumph, but it is unclear whether the marriage between Piers and Irene will succeed.

"The Crown of Life" is not one of Gissing's better novels. It is still worth reading and knowing as the work of a beloved and on the whole neglected author. I was glad to revisit and get to know Gissing's work better from the aspect presented in this book. The book is readily accessible online. I can't comment on the available offprint editions. The quotation from Gissing's letters is found at page 308 of Paul Delany's biography, "Gissing: a Life",

Exciting tale about characters in 1905 central Texas.
By sns
This book is refreshing and interestingly written. It is set in central Texas in 1905. The story is fictitious, but the geography is accurate, and those who have spent time in central Texas will find this particularly fun to read. If you are not from the area, the book has many other appealing qualities. For a new author, Michael Kelly has a unique ability to paint a scene by giving the reader just enough, but not too much, detail to visualize a historical setting and understand how things worked in the past. As he tells this tale, Michael Kelly writes with the authority of someone with life experience who understands the interaction of people and events. For a short novel, the book is full of interesting characters, exciting action, and rich descriptions. The main character is a young deputy in a small town who finds himself in a confrontation with a career criminal, but there are a variety of other characters in the book to which people of different age groups and backgrounds can relate. I highly recommend this for anyone from young adults to retirees.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!
By Amazon Customer
Both Pearls and Ripples are now two of my all-time favorite books. I am a fan of the horror/ghost story genres, and have read author Heather Graham, faithfully, over the past 15 years. BonSue Brandvik is now my favorite author, and I am counting the days until her next book becomes available. When I bought Ripples, that little voice in my head said, "There is no way that this book can be as good as Pearls." I was dead (no pun intended) wrong! I literally put everything on hold, and read the book in 2 days. I could not put it down. Even though this reader has many sentimental memories of time spent at the Biltmore, you do not even have to have ever heard of it to be able to immerse yourself in this story. This novel has it all: Time travel, new relationships, old relationships, up-to-date issues, hot sex, intense love, great story telling and interesting ghosts that the reader hates to say goodbye to as much as the main characters, after the last page is read. I highly recommend this book to the person who is looking for a really enjoyable story. For the reader who is not familiar with the history of the Belleview Biltmore, I suggest doing an internet search on the history of the hotel, to make this an even richer experience!

Expressing my thoughts in writing has never come easily to me
By Mary B. Justus
Expressing my thoughts in writing has never come easily to me. I hope these few words will impart my sincere admiration for this story and the author. I am aware of her heroic efforts to preserve The Belleview Biltmore Hotel. She may not have been able to save the physical structure of the "White Queen of the Gulf", but her stories will, without doubt, preserve it's spirit.
This book came to me at exactly the time I needed to read it, leaving me with little doubt that life unfolds for each of us as it is meant to be. The Spirits of The Belleview Biltmore share their life experiences, as well as what they have learned in the spirit realm, with those who still reside in the living world.
In "Ripples" a grieving mother is gently assisted to find that death is not so final or linear as she believes it to be. Ultimately this story may comfort readers who are lost in their own dark places of grief. Additionally understanding what "ripples" are, and how far reaching their impact can be should inspire all of us to create our own "ripples". ~ MBJ

The author has a very vivid imagination
By Hercules
One of the books I had no trouble putting down! It strayed pretty far from what one would expect from a western novel. I read three chapters and turned it back in.

A Song for the Brokenhearted, by William Shaw

The earthshaking decade of the 1960s comes to a sweeping and dangerous close, as William Shaw's detective duo battle the most powerful members of London society.
After being wounded in the line of duty, Detective Sergeant Breen recuperates on the family farm of his former partner, Helen Tozer. To fill the long and empty hours, he reviews the open case file for a murder that has haunted Helen for years: that of her younger sister. Breen discovers that the teenage victim had been having a secret affair with James Fletchet, the son of an affluent local landowner, celebrated for his service in Kenya during the Mau Mau Uprising.
Breen and Tozer return to London's Criminal Investigation Division, where their questions about Fletchet's past are met with resistance and suspicion. The deeper they probe, the more people they implicate in their investigation. New Scotland Yard doesn't look kindly upon breaking rank, and it's only a matter of time before Breen and Tozer make themselves a target.
Shaw's stirring, heartfelt and diabolically plotted mystery series is everything a reader looks for: enveloping, invigorating, and wonderfully entertaining.

WONDERFUL storytelling!
By D. Jennings
Loved it, loved it, loved it. This is a story well told, with wonderful characterization, believable characters and situations, and dialogue that is like a recording of actual speech. I must point out that the story unfolds in England and thus the perfect pitch of the dialogue may be lost on people not from that time and place (what is a prannock? Who cares! It is exactly the kind of mild/joking insult that people used among friends. Read it out loud and you’ll see what I mean). The main characters are all likeable and complex, and interact with one another in ways that create a rich environment for the story to unfold. Even the bad guys are not evil on their own terms. The people are central to the storytelling, even though the underlying basis of the plot is a (real) historical drama of horrific events. Murder, and worse, is revealed (mostly) through dialogue as the hero questions the other characters, searching for the truth. Much insight is gained into the people and the attitudes of their class and times by the way they tell their stories. There is a lot to be gained by reading between the lines and stopping to think about what was just revealed. The mystery of whodunnit and why is wrapped up in a satisfying way as is the (ongoing development of the) relationship between hero and heroine. All of the characters are great but the heroine is arguably the best – a truly independent, nobody’s fool, feisty gal (brings to mind Katherine Hepburn). You root for her and the hero throughout the book and the ending has them in a suitably messy but satisfying place. I haven’t (yet) read the other two books in this series so you might want to read them in chronological order - but this book stands tall on its own merits.

but this book was excellent. Set in 1969 (my high school graduation year)
By Clifford J. Walk
I don't often give out 5 star reviews, but this book was excellent. Set in 1969 (my high school graduation year), the store is about Detective Sargent Breen, of the London police force. He's been shot in the shoulder and is recuperating at the family farm of his former partner (and lover) Helen Tozer. He's a city boy and the charms of the farm life escape him. Helen was born on the farm and is back to help her ageing parents run the place. She's always mucking out barns, milking cows and repairing fences, leaving Breen to his own devices. He's a police detective who can't stop being one, so when he learns that Helen's younger sister had been found murdered on the farm some 5 years before, and that the case is still open, he starts to investigate, unofficially, of course. While the murder mystery is satisfying what is really good about the book is the characters. The relationship (or not) between Helen and Breen. The relationship between Breen and his mate since school days, John. John is also a policeman (to his great surprise) working for the drug squad. John is portrayed as a larger than life character but when he tries to get a romance going with Amy, an usherette at a local theater, he becomes very life sized. Breen has an adorable pregnant upstairs neighbor named Elife. Then there is Hibou, the 16-year-old runaway that Helen rescued from the streets of London and brought out to the farm. A city girl, a hippie girl, she loves the farm. It was a great story all around. The cover proclaims this to be "A Breen and Tozer Mystery" which suggested there might be more. In fact this book is the third in the series. There were a lot of flashbacks in the story which I suppose happened in the other books. Now I'm going to have to read them.

Fascinating Historical Novel
By Amazon Customer
English author, William Shaw, presents his third novel in the critically acclaimed Breen and Tozer series, A Song for the Brokenhearted. Set in England during the late 1960s, this historical thriller begins with Detective Sergeant Breen, who is recovering from a gunshot wound, staying at friend and former partner, Helen Tozer’s, home in the country. Tozer had previously quit law enforcement to run her family farm. Breen is bored, and Helen arranges for him to look at the files on her murdered sister; the case has not been solved. To pass the time, Breen starts interviewing some of the key players, and uncovers a trail of deceit and corruption in high political circles.

As Breen’s investigation exposes some people in high places, he finds that he and Helen are in danger. There are more murders, exactly like Helen’s sister’s murder, and because the exposure of certain powerful political figures will impact Scotland Yard and cause unwanted publicity, Breen is on his own with no support from his superiors.

Although this is a fictional novel, Shaw has done research into what happened in Kenya during the Mau Mau Uprising. He has woven his fictional characters and events into the facts gleaned from his research to make a believable, suspenseful and wonderful novel. The English setting makes the novel interesting, especially for those unfamiliar with England, and the characters are quite believable.

Although the prologue is a bit surreal, Shaw is an excellent storyteller, and the book has enough suspenseful twists, turns, and surprises that it is almost impossible to put down. A Song for the Brokenhearted is highly recommended.

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this novel.
