Vrushali Khedekar Born and brought up in Pune, India. She is currently staying in Bern, Switzerland. She is passionate about writing books, short stories, poems and blogs. She completed her master’s degree in information technology and began to work with I.T. industry but was not able to sweep out the passionate desire of writing out of her mind. She just didn’t want to be an I.T. professional. She wanted to do something different with her life and live like her own boss. She started her writing journey with her first book and blogging. About the Author
Adalbert Stifter wurde am 23.10.1805 in Oberplan (Böhmerwald) geboren. Er kam als Sohn eines Leinewebers und Flachshändlers aus einfachen Verhältnissen. Als er 12 Jahre alt war, starb der Vater, und er wurde von da ab von den Großeltern erzogen. Er besuchte von 1818 bis 1826 das Gymnasium und studierte anschließend bis 1830 in Wien zunächst Jura, dann Naturwissenschaften und Geschichte, machte aber keine Abschlußprüfung. Stifter wollte gern Landschaftsmaler werden. Den Lebensunterhalt verdiente er sich als Privatlehrer in Wiener Adelshäusern. 1848 zog Stifter nach Linz und lebte dort die letzten Jahrzehnte seines Lebens. In seinen letzten Lebensjahren war er schwerkrank und litt unter Depressionen. Ob er Selbstmord beging, ist nicht sicher nachzuweisen. Er starb am 28.1.1868.

They don't write them like this anymore...

This is a fine literate thriller from the author of The Manchurian Candidate. I actually came to this author from a thriller novel called "The Whisper of the Axe" which I liked so well that I picked this one up even though it didn't seem to be the kind of book I would like. It's an art theft novel, with lots of conversation and sophisticated people who aren't what they seem to be and it's unflaggingly fun...and did I say literate? One thing. The very last paragraph made the whole thing memorable to me but I have found editions of the book that lack this particular paragraph. It seems the author forgot to tie up one loose end and corrected it in a later edition. Hoo-boy! The correction is a doozy! Recommended. Would make a great movie if you used good actors like John Malkovich or Phillip Seymour Hoffman and left the Tom Cruise types out.

What is G.F. Skipworth's "The Simpering, North Dakota Literary Society?" Its founder is Farika Zingarella, a nun who was kicked out of the convent for the hefty sum she won in a 1862 poker game since "a deck of cards was a Stradivarius in her hands."

She didn't just invest her winnings, she amassed the wealth of a small nation. In order to manage the funds, a "literary society" (a name that does not give off "the odor of greed and ungodliness") was formed in the tiny community of Simpering, North Dakota.

Its female stockholders are known as "The Mighty Five." They are brazen enough to hold a world economic summit in North Dakota (without inviting the United States) and travel the globe in order to further pad their portfolios. They are:

1. Edielou Zingarella - think Katherine Hepburn. Daughter of Farika. Leader of the pack. Too rational for romance. Skipworth's writing style reads like a script taken from the annals of the Ziegfeld Follies or a current broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keilor. The narrator is present in the story making comments and offering advice. At times, the asides veer the narrative off course, for example the background on Simpering's oldest soldier, but overall one can easily imagine the narrator laughing along with the reader at the characters' antics.

Overall, a fictional feminine undercurrent is added to the power structure of U.S. history.

It's one thing to win an entire town in a poker game; it's another to create an a small empire of femininity. "The Simpering, North Dakota Literary Society" tells the story of Farika Zingarella, an ex-nun who becomes the owner of The Simpering, a small town in North Dakota. Along with other wise women by her side, she stands against the changing times of the world. With humor and much to think about, "The Simpering" is quite the read, very highly recommended.

an historical fictional account of a group of woman who take the world by storm. While it seemed to start off a little slowly, it quickly gathers momentum.
Plenty of twists and turns kept me rivited. And you'll enjoy the ending (don't peek)

About the Author
Upton Sinclair was born in Baltimore in September 1878. His father moved the family to New York City in 1888. Although his own family was extremely poor, he spent periods of time living with his wealthy grandparents. He later argued that witnessing these extremes turned him into a socialist. Sinclair funded his college education by writing stories for newspapers and magazines. Sinclair s first novel was published in 1901. Sinclair was extremely active in socialist politics throughout his life. His novel "Dragon s Teeth" (1942) on the rise of Nazism won him the Pulitzer Prize. By the time Upton Sinclair died in 1968, he had published more than ninety books.

Early Sinclair

Entertaining, though long, book of 663 pages, that is an autobiographical account of Sinclair's first marriage, and his times as a struggling writer looking for his big break at the turn of the 20th Century.
While readable, it did seem overdone at times, with some over ripe, fancy prose, but Sinclair still tells a good story. His usual themes of bashing the capitalists, is only lightly touched upon here.
His views of marriage were not really fashionable at the time, and he came across as a rather self centered character, though still a good, albeit somewhat reluctant, husband and father.

( In regards to the cover, why couldn't they get the punctuation right, and include the apostrophe in "Love's")?

A pleasant story of old school heroes & villains

"Black Star's Campaign" is the follow-up to "The Black Star, A Detective Story." The Black Star is a super crook of great cleverness and organizational skills, a laudable but improbable aversion to violence, and a taste for competition. His nemesis is amateur adventurer Roger Verbeck, somewhat less clever, a bit more athletic but otherwise much the same in personality. The story is well-written in the style of pulp novels of the 1920s by Johnston McCulley, well-known for his invention of Zorro. There's a lot of action and not much character development. This is just as well in my opinion; it keeps the story lean and gives the reader more to imagine. The chief drawback from a modern reader's perspective is the inability of Verbeck - and the police - to learn from experience. In this and the previous novel, Verbeck, his henchman Muggs, and dozens of guards and policemen are overcome by clouds of knockout gas from "vapor guns" carried by the Black Star's minions time after time but take absolutely no precautions to avoid repetitions except for (unsuccessfully) trying to hold their breaths. They also tend to spend a lot of time sitting or standing with their backs towards room doors and unexplored closets, making it easy for them to be surprised by the villains. Fortunately for the reader, the cleverness and jocular good spirits of the villain provide most of the reading fun. Make no mistake, the Black Star is no Robin Hood and deserves to be caught -- but only after a long and satisfying chase.

A Fun Read

Black Star’s Campaign by Johnston McCulley (1919). Roger Verbeck and his rough-and-tumble sidekick, Muggs, oppose Black Star, the super criminal. Muggs had been a criminal in France until Verbeck rescued him and took him under his wing. Now the man is totally dedicated to his boss. Black Star, no name associated with the super criminal, has strict principals and will not use violence, but enjoys the competition between he and Verbeck. There is little characterization other than that, but Black Star appears much more intelligent than his enemy or the police, and only fails by a slip up from a subordinate. This is a typical Johnston McCulley character. The costumed criminal is a likable enough rogue, and outwits the police at every turn. There were some scenes in the story that reflected the costumed heroes a decade later. As with McCulley’s Rollicking Rogue, The Black Star had a lot of similarities to the future Captain Satan and his men. Verbeck stops Muggs from committing suicide from a bridge, and employs him like The Shadow did with Harry Vincent. The Black Star also has the habit of ordering his men to “Report!” (A habit of The Shadow a decade later). Another oddity is the use of an autogiro – though not named – in the story, and this was 1919, remember. It was a fun story, but Verbeck and the police seemed very inept, and the reader roots for the criminal rogue. Still, a fun read.

Old but good.

This is a collection of mystery stories with a twists. Each story has it's own set of characters and are basically unrelated so you don't have to read them in order. The Baroness has an easy to read style with enough description to create the scene that draws you into the story. I enjoyed each one

fun, alternate look at English history

My first Orczy book and a fun read! Not a mind-blowing story and, of course, it's bathed in olde-timey ideas about love (i.e., you know your true love on sight and fall helplessly in love after only a few words are spoken, etc.) but the "tangled skein" of the story was quite interesting and it was a fun alternate look at English history.

I loved this book so much! It is exciting, romantic, and I couldn't put it down. I loved the characters and story, and it kept me on the edge of my seat. The Scarlet Pimpernel is one of my favorite books, and Orczy did not disappoint in this book either.

About the Author
Joseph Roth (1894-1939) was the great elegist of the cosmopolitan culture that flourished in the dying days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He published several books and articles before his untimely death at the age of 44. Roth’s writing has been admired by J. M. Coetzee, Jeffrey Eugenides, Elie Wiesel, and Nadine Gordimer, among many others.

Richard Panchyk has published twenty-three books, including translations of three Joseph Roth novels: The Antichrist, The Hundred Days, and Perlefter.

Roth's worst translated novel

Despite being graced with Roth's lyrical settings and memorable imagery, "The Hundred Days" is so ill-conceived and so disjoint as to be pointless. As an example of the imagery, consider the couple, previously happily domiciled together, now agreeing to separate, probably forever. They're standing in the rain talking, then comes the final goodbye handshake: "Both hands were wet and there was no warmth in either. It seemed that they were not actually shaking hands, but exchanging rain." (pg 130)

The novel is divided into four Books. Book I describes Napoleon's return to Paris after his escape from Elba. It's by far the best section of the novel. Book II tells the story of how Angelina came to be working as a laundry maid in the Imperial Palace before Napoleon was sent to Elba. It's the longest Book in the novel, and it's very peculiar, not in a good way. Her story appears to be a replay of Andreas Pum's; he's the hero of Roth's 1924 novel "Rebellion." Both Andreas and Angelina have a peasant's religious devotion to the Emperor, and both of them are served badly by the military. Both stories describe men's glory-addled rush to enlist in military service, the maiming and killing of war, the unreliability of veterans' pensions after a war is lost, and the amazing rapidity with which the population can reverse its loyalties. One reason for Roth's failure here may be that Napoleon's Paris is 100 years away from Roth's base in Franz Joseph's Vienna. But the deeper reason is probably that Roth can't portray women from the inside; his evocation of Angelina's thoughts and emotions simply isn't credible. In fact, she has no passion at all, unless you count her religious devotion to Napoleon, whom she meets only twice, very briefly. In her story she goes from being an innocent young virgin to a woman used by soldiers to being a single mother, all the while "dazed and confused," "with a dark awareness that life was very difficult and quite unintelligible, a dangerous and extraordinary burden." (pp 79-80). That's about it. It may be relevant that by 1936, when he wrote "The Hundred Days," Roth's wife had been permanently institutionalized for schizophrenia.

Book III covers Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo and his subsequent abdication. Here Roth emphasizes Napoleon's back pain, "in the small of his back" (pg 151). In fact Napoleon suffered terribly from hemorrhoids. His inability to stay on his horse probably affected the outcome at Waterloo. Roth's late-life fondness for emperors wouldn't allow him to mention such a thing. In this Book Napoleon's thoughts fill many repetitive pages as they cycle endlessly in his head. It's quite tedious. Book IV, thankfully very short, describes Angelina's death as she charges wildly into a crowd of Royalists. The final circumstances of her body set a new standard for bathetic symbolism.

melancholic from the first to the last page. very elegiac and poetic, as if extended poems lined up into chapters of a book, masterly written beyond any doubt. all the characters are sad, fight lost battles, and inexorably slide toward demise. one of the reviewers here mentions somewhat clumsy translation (and quite a few repetitions) which I would agree with but other than that, for me, this is certainly a gem of a book. speaking of napoleon, one should not consider roth's napoleon an 'accurate' replica of napoleon bonaparte.

Bony and Pals explore benders, weather forecasting and evil

In the past 12 years, I've reread this gem 4 times - and look forward to the next time. The leading characters are superbly portrayed, as the good guys try to protect a deceased scientist's uncanny system that predicts Aussie weather, 12 months in advance.. The manuscripts are protected by two binge drinkers, both in their eighties, both with colorful cattle drover backgrounds. A key aspect of the plot: Upfield offers colorful insights into the differing psychological nightmare/illusions associated with various types of liquor - and gets these distinctions into the unraveling of the plot.. The central old-timer comes across much like the old geezer prospector in Treasure of Sierra Madre. Plus: Bony's wily ability to outsmart his police-bosses is top-rate here. Don't miss this one!

excellent Upfield mystery

The Battling Prophet is the 20th novel in the Bony series by Arthur Upfield. Having solved a smuggling case for the South Australian Police, Bony decides to mix business with pleasure by taking ten days leave to go fishing at the small coastal town of Cowdry, as the guest of one John Luton. Luton has requested Bony's presence as he is convinced that his good friend, unorthodox meteorologist and long-range weather forecaster, Benjamin Wickham, was murdered. Whilst the local doctor listed the cause of death as heart failure due alcoholic poisoning, Luton expounds his theory on the effects of different sprits on the DTs (hoojahs), and cites this as proof that his friend was murdered. As the body has been cremated without autopsy, Bony has to look at motive and means. Wickham's predictions were extremely accurate and he was both admired and detested; this accuracy also made him a target for those who wanted to obtain his methods for their own gains; the beneficiaries of his will are another source of suspects. Upfield touches on a myriad of subjects: the merits of binge drinking and abstinence; the value of accurate long-range weather forecasting for would-be world conquerors; trade unionism; communism; sectarianism. He is scathing of the Security Service and the Commonwealth Investigation Service. The reader will be intrigued when Bony makes the completely uncharacteristic move of following telegraphed orders to return to Brisbane before he has solved his case. Plenty of twists in the plot that will keep the reader guessing, and, of course, Bony constructs and smokes many "alleged cigarettes". Excellent Upfield mystery.

a different upfield novel.did not bring out Boney's mothers characteristics. A strong Boney bringing an ability to persuade others. an unnecessary killing? very limited setting. an enjoyable read. a tenuous long term friendship. some unusual characters to provide the twists. choose other upfield novels before this one.

When Lady Julia tells him of her plans to make him into a gentleman in time for the ball, Alistair agrees to the scheme. After all, how hard can it be when he's already a gentleman? Alistair is about to find out just how hard it can be in My Fair Groom.

My Fair Groom

When I started this book, I thought it was a "GROOM" as in Bride and Groom. In fact it referred to one who grooms or takes care of the horses in a stable.
This story is written in old english style. I enjoyed this so much because I routinely switch between reading books for fun and classics. Some of the classics are favorites of mine because they challenge my thinking. This story used terms I was not familiar with and I looked each one up as I was going so I got every thing out of the story I should. This may sound like work to some, but you can enjoy the story without doing that, that part was for my own enrichment.
This was a beautiful love story. The characters touched me and I found myself very involved with them. It is fun to escape to a simpler time in life. What would it be like to dress in fancy dresses, take a horse and carriage every where? Even in these times, there was still love, regret, jealousy, etc. So long ago, so many things different, yet so many the same. In the end, we all want that one true love and to live a happy life.
I enjoyed this story very much and look forward to reading more of Linda's books.

I'm a real picky reader when it comes to my books. This one captured my attention from beginning to end. I don't normally read these type books, so for it to capture me the way it did, speaks very highly of it. I also loved the other two books of the trilogy. Will be willing to read this over and over again.

Linda Rae Sande sure put it all out in the last book of this series. So hard to put down stayed up til 4am reading could not stop. I just had to know what was going to happen next. I love stories like the ones in this series and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND them to you. Happy reading.

Darius Shank sees a pretty face in the hopes of gaining an advantage. Little does he know he's about to get the surprise of his life. Darius is stunned to say the least to find his lover bearing a new face and name. He's willing to put the past behind them but Amelia isn't so trusting as she once was. Amelia makes friends on the airship and sets her plans in motion inspite of Darius's insistence they work together for gain. Will Amelia allow the past to cloud her judgement? Can Amelia gain the prize she seeks? Your answers await you in The Airship.

Appealing Heroine Highlights Adventure Story

The Airship is the highly-enjoyable second book in the Steam World series by this author. The vaunted Steampunk Carnival featured in Book One proves the jumping-off point for Samuel Langley's creation of the unique, massive airship preparing to make its maiden, transatlantic voyage from the US to France. There is a diverse cast of characters boarding the airship as is to be expected, but the focus is on Amelia Harlow, a young woman who makes the journey for a singular reason: she plans to steal something from one of the passengers. Convicted, recently-released murderess Elizabeth Cole and her lover Lewis possess the item Amelia must steal. An added complication appears in the unwelcome form of Amelia's former partner, smooth-talking Darius Shank, who quickly becomes wise to Amelia's intentions. Amelia must find a way to obtain the object she desires without getting caught and without any personal entanglements, something which becomes increasingly difficult with Lewis and Darius tugging at her emotions in completely different ways. Amelia is a thief, but her personal story and her motivations make her a compelling heroine, and one ahead of her time in the 1901 America in which this adventure is set. The story's climax is satisfying even though it leaves several questions unanswered, whetting the reader's appetite for the third book still to come. Ms. Leuthold's descriptive powers are in full force here (word of caution: do not read this book on an empty stomach; the airship's dining experience seems second to none), and her characters' dialogues ring true as always. I recommend this book and look forward to further adventures in the Steam World series.
