Exciting historical fiction with plenty of plot twists & great characters

It's 1921 and the Irish War of Independence is in its third year. Seeking freedom from British rule, flying columns from the Irish Republican Army conduct hit-and-run raids on Crown forces including the Royal Army and police from the Royal Irish Constabulary and "Black and Tans"-- temporary constables known in large part for their violent attacks on people and property, including the Sack of Balbriggan in 1920.
This is the setting for A Time of Traitors, the third book by David Lawlor (@LawlorDavid) to feature former soldier turned IRA field commander Liam Mannion as protagonist. This review is based on a copy of the book provided to me by the author for that purpose.
Liam fought for Great Britain in the Great War and he was once a member of the Black and Tans, a decision born of desperation when his discharge from the army left him jobless and `living rough' on the streets. He quickly realized what a mistake that was and changed sides to fight for Ireland -- a story told in Tan (my review). After the events of that book, Liam had to hide out for awhile and spent some time hunting gold in France, the basis for The Golden Grave (my review).
Now he's back in the fight on home soil, alongside his fiancé Kate Hanrahan who is an IRA intelligence officer. But the war isn't going as smoothly as they'd hoped. Facing the might and resources of the British Empire, the IRA is operating on a shoestring, with every bullet and gun precious and each man lost a telling blow. On top of that, British forces have recently discovered several arms caches and seem to have prior knowledge of IRA missions.
Given the circumstances, it is perhaps inevitable that the specter of a turncoat or two in the ranks would rise. When Liam and Kate are given separate secret missions by Michael Collins, the "big fella" himself, they get caught in the whirlwind, trying to piece together clues that will make sense of it all. Who is loyal and to what? Making the difficult tasks before Liam and Kate that much harder, the Truce of 1921 is announced and the first cracks of division appear in the IRA between those who are willing to accept peace without fully achieving their aims and those who won't.
To say much more than that would be to spoil the story for future readers. Suffice to say there are plot twists and turns aplenty and some shocking losses as the action ranges from the Irish countryside to the streets of London. Once again, Mr. Lawlor has taken historical events and threaded through them a compelling and exciting bit of fiction. It is important to note, too, that it isn't necessary to have read the prior two books to fully enjoy A Time of Traitors. There are callbacks to prior events that provide necessary context.
I'm certainly biased but I love the setting and the characters, who have changed realistically over the course of the three books. From the trenches of France to Ireland's pastures and the rougher streets of London, Liam has essentially been at war for the better part of a decade and it shows. What today we call Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, was then known as "shell shock" or "war neurosis" and Liam has it. Similarly, Kate and Liam's father Dan suffer terrible losses and are suitably affected by them.
Mr. Lawlor closes A Time of Traitors with a scene that makes it clear, to me at least, he's not done telling stories about Liam and this time in Ireland's history. There's a treaty on the horizon, and a civil war, too. And Liam didn't take care of all his business in London, either. Personally, I can't wait for the next book.

Loved it!

I'm new to Liam Mannion, but this is definitely a stand-alone book, and I don't felt like I missed anything by not being familiar with the previous stories. This is a fast paced tale of deceit, adventure, lies, and traitors. I kept picturing an old black and white movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Mr. Lawlor completely captured the essence of time and place in the scenes and in the characters. The opening really grabbed me, especially how meticulous the "clock man" was, and from the first chapter, I couldn't put it down. The suspenseful ending was GREAT!

David Lawlor Delivers Again

David Lawlor has written another action-packed historical thriller, where Liam Mannion and the other characters come alive on the pages of A Time of Traitors. Some of the traitors in this third book of the series are obvious; others subtly disguised as compatriots; and yet others a complete surprise as the novel unfolds. From Ireland to London, the story sweeps from back rooms, cozy parlors, and seamy joints in London's Soho District.
The story, while set in 1921, is timeless despite the specific details of the struggle between the Irish Republican Army and the British. Mr. Lawlor shows the horrors of war and expresses some universal themes about love, loyalties, revenge, and treacheries. There are times when this universality allows the reader to forget time, only to be delivered into a place where life can change in an instant and turns on the simple decisions made in anger and jealousy.
The characterizations in A Time of Traitors are rich, adding depth to even minor characters such as Charlie Curtis:
His head was large and square, with thick lips and wide nostrils. In fact, everything about him was over-sized – as though he had been cobbled together from parts in his own scrap yard – from his wide nostrils to the thick folds of skin that ran up each side of his mouth, from the shovel hands to the broad, bony shoulders. The only thing delicate about his block– like appearance was the care and attention he bestowed to his thinning hair. Charlie had spared no effort in its oiling and sculpting – somehow working its sparse tendrils into a swirling sinuous wave that, miraculously, managed to cover his large dome, albeit forsaking the back and sides as a lost cause to be left bare to the elements.
Liam's fiance Kate is a strong female lead and a match for Liam and his loyalty to his family, friends, and country. In the midst of violence and danger, their love is sweet and romantic--a much needed antidote to the war and not-so-peaceful truces between the opposing factions. The young boy Albie is not soon forgotten with his Camelot-like devotion to his mentors. Mr. Lawlor turns him from an idealistic young boy into a Dickensonian character with shocking outcomes. Liam's father Dan is modeled after Mr. Lawlor's own father, and the affection for his character is deftly drawn in this novel, as well as the previous two.
The evil characters come across as the worst nightmares for anything civil and gentile, and serve as a perfect foil for the heroes of this book.
I'm a fan of both David Lawlor and Liam Mannion, and I fervently hope that just because this is the third book in the series, it is not the final one.
