A piece of history illuminated with stories of what it must have felt like to stand knee deep in the blood of battle.

Finished Chickamauga after a late night session. I feel gutted. How could so many men throw themselves onto the battlefield to fight for a flag? That was over a hundred years ago and men around the world are still doing it? Can't we all just take a pill or something and go and have a good lie down? Then get together for a few beers and a chat? Maybe draw some lines and say, "OK you have that bit and we'll have this bit. We'll share our stuff with you for some of yours." Obviously, Blair's book has left a lasting impression with me. It is a 'must read'. The individual story lines woven into the fabric of history pull no punches .Every one should read it, especially the politicians who seem quite happy to continually throw men away just to appease their own egotistical ambitions.
Blair Howards novel combines the horrors of close combat warfare with the tenderness two people share when they are thrust together in terrible circumstances.
In some passages I felt I was standing with the boys in 'line of battle' waiting for the order to charge. I could almost feel the wind of a the bullets whistling past my head. I have never really been one for war stories but the historical facts acting as a vehicle for the fictional story lines had me wondering if Blair Howard was there in the battle himself. I'm looking forward to reading more of this author's works.

I am in absolute awe at the brilliant writing by Blair Howard.

I was provided with a free copy of this book so I could give an honest review.
I am a historian (so says my college degree). I was another female who knew barely anything about the Civil War. College changed that. Yet, I still don't know every battle ever fought. That included "CHICKAMAUGA". One can hear the numbers of casualties of the Civil War, but don't know just how devastating it had to have been. Mr Howard has brought to life an excellent, exciting, nail biting and emotional story of what people in that battle may have been saying, doing, dying, and surviving one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. As a woman, I did not shy away from a "war" story. I started reading, then was immediately sucked into the story. I felt for nearly all of the people. In this book, Mr Howard blends the shared experiences of the Confederate and Federal sides to the point where you stop routing for one side; and you see that each one of those fighters are human beings with fears, doubts, the will to live or die trying.
I would love to read much more from this very talented author. He knows how to make your heart race, pulls you right into the action, and care about what is taking place and where. I really liked that every other chapter focuses on either the Confederate view or the Federal view. Everything is coherent. You know what is happening all around the battle. It seems like a panoramic movie. He really knows how to bring history to life in such a way that you don't want to stop reading. This is one book I will cherish always.
One down side, if any, is maybe like most beginnings. It was hard to identify one individual character from another. Like anything, you keep reading and suddenly you know who they are and what role they play in the book. It definitely makes you want to reread the book again and spot things you may have not noticed the first time. YOU WILL WANT TO REREAD THIS BOOK AGAIN AND AGAIN. Like "Lord of the Rings" fans, you will love this splendid story and care enough about the people in the book to come back to visit.

Chickamauga, thew experience.

Of all the wars ever fought, for Americans at least, the Civil War must count among the very worst. Thanks to cinema and TV the general history of this war is known throughout the English speaking world and names such as Lee, Grant, Gettysburg and so on are familiar enough. Chickamauga is a lesser known battle but nonetheless awesome in scale and carnage and in choosing this engagement Blair Howard offers some new insights into this conflict.
History has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember and I read a great deal of factual history books. However, dates, names and places are usually insufficient to describe what it was really like to be there. By writing a novel against the backdrop of the historic battle the author offers us not just a story but the experience as well.
The text is well composed and reads easily, which is always an important consideration in my view. The battle itself is retold in great detail, day by day, hour by hour, which evidences a huge amount of research on the part of the author. Although the generals and senior officers are mainly historic persons the author puts words in their mouths, but always completely plausible. This serves to give an insight into the problems of command structure, communication and the internecine quarrels that tended to exacerbate the hardships, both physical and mental, that the soldiers on both sides had to endure.
Parallel to the account of the battle the author tells the stories of some of the men, confederate and union, fighting the battle and some civilians whose homes and lives were deeply affected by the war. All fictitious characters but wholly credible and they help us to understand what it was really like to be there.
All in all, Chickamauga offers not just a story but an experience as well.
