Come Spring, by Ben Ames Williams

The attempt in this book has been to tell the story of the founding of Union, a small Maine town, by ordinary people, in what was then an ordinary way. It was the way in which towns were founded from the Atlantic seaboard west to the great plains, by stripping off the forest and putting the land to work. The people in this book were not individually as important as George Washington; the town they founded was not as important as New York. But people like them made this country, and towns like this one were and are the soil in which this country’s roots are grounded.

The Union Historical Society has undertaken the reprinting of Come Spring to ensure that this important historical novel remains available to readers. We feel we have a unique situation in our village; most of the sites mentioned in this story still exist and many of the descendants of those first families continue to live here in Union. We are committed to sharing this history through preservation and education.

Come Read Come Spring
By A Customer
"Come Spring" was written by Ben Ames Williams in 1940. It has been published several times since because it is an enduring classic. Mima is the main character of the book, a young woman with a deep inner strength. We meet her at the very beginning of the book, as she and her family are on a boat taking them to the Maine wilderness at the start of the American Revolution. The story shows the hardships and heartbreak of taming the New World and the deep, abiding love that keeps the families going. Ben Ames Williams is famous for his contemporary writings, such as "Leave Her to Heaven" (which was made into a movie), but I feel that his historical fiction is where he excells. The families featured in "Come Spring" truly did exist, forming the history of Union, Maine. This is an outstanding book and I recommend it for anyone who loves romance, history and excitement

Wonderful 1940 classic
By A Customer
Come Spring is one of my all time favorite books. When I read this book (about every other year) it's as engrossing as the first time I read it. I can close my eyes and picture the wildllfe Williams decribes, I find myself trying to copy the accents of the characters and never fail, I end up reading late into the night "just one more chapter". For more information on this wonderful book, contact the Union Historical Society at 207-785-5444.

Backwards Into the Future, by Bronwyn Elsmore

You can’t go back, her friends say, but Mary has to do it. Going back to her old hometown is the only way she can silence a voice from the past. And find her childhood friend, Ana.
Kui is pushing her, Ana is holding back, and between the two women there’s much to be resolved.
The plum tree and the manuka have gone, but a lemon tree thrives. The mystery surrounding the last voyage of the Marakihau may never be solved; but if Ana returns, their friendship and some things from the past can be recovered. Can’t they?

“I love Every Five Minutes from the same Author, and am
delighted to find this book shows her beautiful writing just
as well. The characters are very real and there’s a similar
delicate touch to the prose. Bronwyn Elsmore has a real gift
for saying just enough without too much.
Backwards Into the Future is a novel with the feel of a
memoir about it – I find the combination very appealing.”

About the Author
When carried away on a flight of fancy, Bronwyn Elsmore might say that if she’d been gifted with a better voice, she might have chosen to be an opera singer. Sadly for her, that wasn’t the case, but luckily she found she could write. A list of awards confirms that. Throughout her writing career Bronwyn has written over a wide variety of genres – articles, short stories, poetry, stage-plays, fiction and non-fiction. Since that didn’t pay many bills, along the way she spent many years as an academic. Currently, though, she spends most of her writing time on fiction. When she’s not writing? You might spot her feeding neighbourhood and stray cats, or possibly adding to the list of countries visited to date. And reading, of course. Bronwyn is a fifth generation New Zealander. She grew up in a small town quite like the one at the centre of Backwards Into the Future. This novel draws on the bi-racial Maori-Pakeha cultural heritage of that country.

Growing up Gently in 1960s New Zealand
By KiwiKathleen
This is a beautiful, gentle book. It's told through the now and through the memories of Mary, a woman who left the town to go nursing and has never returned other than for funerals - don't we all know the story?! The 'now' seems to be very much the present time, and Mary is a Pakeha (white New Zealander of European descent). She remembers how she and Ana, a Maori girl, became inseparable friends, of how Mary and Ana were taught together by Ana's grandmother, Kui. She taught them all the stories of their local countryside - like the taniwha from Maungatoka who are always fighting; 'Maeropango and Mokowhiri [keep] going over the boundary into each other's territories and causing trouble ... they tear up the earth and it all washes down here.' She also taught them how to find and harvest, and prepare, plants for medicines, and the chants that go with each process.

Now Mary has been called by Kui to return, and despite everybody saying that "you can't go back, you know," she does. And while she's waiting for Ana to also return, she becomes friends with Amiria, Ana's younger cousin. It's their coffees and fruit processing sessions that spur a lot of Mary's memories.

I'm picking Mary is around my age, maybe a little older but basically my contemporary, so this took me right back to my childhood. For a younger reader it's a marvellous delving into country-town New Zealand in the 1960s. Read this and you'll know what it was like - the way of life, the thoughts, feelings and aspirations of those of us growing up in that time. The cross-cultural friendship is also written beautifully, along with the occasional discomforts but wrapped up in the love and generosity of the old woman.

One proverb struck me particularly:
"Nau to rourou, naku te rourou, ka ora te manuhiri."
"Your basket, my basket, the visitor..."
"Ae. With your small basket and my small basket, the visitors will live. That is to say, if everyone contributes what they can, there'll be enough for everyone to eat."
Two girls from different backgrounds, each contributing to the friendship> I do hope they get to meet again.

By-gone days in small-town New Zealand
By Carolyn
Mary and Ana were best friends, growing up in small-town New Zealand in the late 1950s-early 1960s. ‘Backwards into the Future’ begins when a middle-aged Mary returns to Waimamae after many years away nursing in New Zealand and abroad. Although most of the people she remembers from her childhood have died, she recalls them all very clearly. The story unfolds in a series of evocative episodes from Mary and Ana’s childhood, from primary school through to their last few days at secondary school. It is a time of party-line telephones, news-reels at the cinema, long-drop toilets, free milk at primary school and panama hats at secondary school, two-tone Zephyr Zodiacs and family fireworks parties on Guy Fawkes night. ‘Backwards into the Future’ is a by-gone New Zealand that older readers will recall with affection, while younger ones will be intrigued by it. The story is warm and loving and largely happy although there is sadness and tragedy too. Mary and Ana lose touch with each other when they finish school and woven through ‘Backwards into the Future’ is the thread of Mary’s longing for Ana to be back in Waimamae: this is heightened by Mary’s conviction that Ana’s late grandmother is also calling to her to come home. Throughout, why Mary and Ana drifted apart and what has become of Ana remains tantalising unexplained. Mary carefully gains the confidence of one of Ana’s cousins in her quest to find out how to contact Ana again, and I loved the optimistic note on which the book ended. Maori culture and the Maori language is an integral part of ‘Backwards into the Future’ and I feel a short glossary of some of the terms used would be useful for readers who are unfamiliar with Maori.

We should always remember the past... it is how we go forward.
By M. Thornburg
Good friends often stay good friends throughout their lives. Even though they may see each other only infrequently, they stay in touch, share their joys and sorrows, and – when they do meet – they pick up their friendship again as if they'd never been apart.

With best friends, it's a little more complicated.

"Backwards into the Future" is the story of Mary and Ana, best friends all through school in their small New Zealand town from the late 1950s to middle '60s. Their friendship bridges a cultural divide between the native Maori and the Pakeha (European descended) New Zealanders, and it's the tension implicit in this divide that pervades their story and drives it forward – or is it backwards? – into a changed future.

Like Bronwyn Elsmore's earlier novel "Every Five Minutes," this one is written with a sure, skilled, and sensitive hand. Elsmore knows when to show the finest details, when to drop hints, and when to leave open spaces that readers are compelled to navigate on their own. As other reviewers of "Backwards into the Future" have said, the story is told gently but never sentimentally. I was pulled into it immediately and it didn't release me until I'd read the last page. I recommend it highly.

A lead that Fadden follows provides him with a further part of the puzzle along with the identity and contact details of two other agents which he must locate.

But, when Fadden discovers all too late that one agent's identity has been assumed by a Russian sympathiser, the Russian authorities now also hold the key to discovering the western authorities' secret weapon.

Can Fadden unlock the tangled web of clues?

GREAT story but editing needs some work....
By Love Being Mom
I really liked this book and probably would have given it 5 stars if the editing and grammar were better. A huge problem I have seen lately in books is the incorrect usage of I instead of me as the object of a sentence. Truly drives me nuts. And there were a few places where parts of sentences were either deleted or not quite right, even once where it made the story not make sense until I figured it out.

That being said, I LOVED the story!! For awhile at the beginning I was totally confused as to what was REALLY going on, but then learned that that is part of the beauty of the book - you are as lost as Kate. I loved the twists and turns and there were a number of quotes and "thoughts" that really made me stop, think, and evaluate my own life.

GHOST DANCERS (Scholastic Version) (THE WHITE OAKS SERIES Book 1), by D. Rogers

The Ghost Dance, a spiritual dance of the Lakota Sioux in the late 1800’s, becomes their hope—and their demise. Their ancestors were to rise from the dead, reclaim their lands and restore it to its natural state, as it was prior to the intrusion of the white man. But what actually happened was far from what Wovoka, their Messiah, preached.
Ghost Dancers follows Lt. George Hawkins from the Battle of the Little Bighorn to the newly established Indian reservations to the massacre at Wounded Knee, a massacre precipitated by the Ghost Dance.
Follow George on General George Crook’s “Horsemeat March.” Through George, live the deaths of Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull, helpless to stop either. Love a woman more suitable to the 1990’s than the 1890’s, and watch helpless, again, as 300 men, women, and children are slaughtered on a frozen December morning by the U.S. Cavalry.
Here is the story of one man’s determination to make a difference.

Review
"Ghost Dancers is a remarkable story. I was amazed by the character of George. His emotions are deep and really touched upon this reader. He wants to do more for people but his hands are tied. His actions are genuine and come alive in this story. There were times I felt his trepidation. I love Maggie and her strong backbone to survive in a harsh land. Diana Rogers pens an extraordinary tale of hardships, prejudice, wars, and finding love, during a time when the world showed very little for mankind. This excellent story comes highly recommended." Reviewed by Cherokee of Coffee Time Romance Reviews "I believe that readers who have any empathy for the plight of the Indians at this time will find this book a very enjoyable read given its unique twist." Ghost Dancers
By Diana Rogers
As the author of this book, I am hoping to "get the word out" to everyone that, although this is a self-published title, I've had nothing but great reviews from everyone who has read it. From people I know to people I've never met, from other authors to educators, they've all agreed that Ghost Dancers is a book worth reading. Some can't put it down, others would like to use it in their curriculum. If you haven't visisted my website, please do so at ghostdancers.net and "read all about it" to get the full overview on this book. Thanks!

Great Historical Book
By Eric R. Lemke
My sister recommended this book to me. I'm a bit of an avid reader and she thought I would enjoy it. She was right! I usually stick to personal development books, but this was just a great read. Once I started, it took about 2 days to get all the way through and I'm not the speediest of readers. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn a little about the dark side of our countries history while being wildly entertained!

Ghost Dancers
By Charlene Good
Although I thought the book started out a little slow, it sure turned out to be a good read. It was good to see the clashes between early settlers and the invasion of Sioux lands from a soldier's point of view. I found in this book that I was learning the true, and accurate, history of our land, while being entertained at the same time. I highly recommend it-and I look forward to reading D.L. Rogers' next publication.

murder and intrigue in medieval wales
By Pamela222
I really enjoy historical mysteries--Ellis Peters, Sharon Kay Penman, Deanna Raybourne, et al--and I absolutely loved this second entry in the Gareth and Gwen series. I really enjoyed The Good Knight, book 1 in the series, and in my opinion this book is even better. Gareth, a knight, and Gwen, the royal bard's daughter, must work together to solve a series of murders that threaten to disrupt the marriage of their king. The mystery keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat with suspense over what will happen next. And the characters have really grown and developed from the first book. The romance between Gareth and Gwen is incredibly sweet and very well done. All in all, a great read for any fan of historical mystery.

Sara Woodbury continues to enthrall
By Mary
I purchased this book because I was on a "Sara kick" after reading previous novels of hers, and was not dissapointed. The historical background of Medieval Wales is enough to rate this book highly, but the mystery holds one's interest to the end. The characters of Gareth and Gwen are well suited to the story and I certainly hope there will be another follow up to their sleuthing in the future.

Intriguing medieval justice
By John Jenkins
In November of 1143, Aber Castle is the place where all of the elite personalities of Gwynedd (northern Wales) have gathered to witness the royal wedding between King Owain Gwynedd and Cristina, who happens to be his cousin. Because of their relationship, the marriage is not approved by certain church leaders and cannot be held in the cathedral at Bangor. So King Owain intends to be married in the chapel at Aber, but the wedding appears to be cursed with numerous disruptions, including two murders as well as an attempt on the life of the king.

Gareth, a knight, and Gwen, the daughter of the court bard, who combined to solve a murder involving a royal bridegroom the previous summer, are now tasked with questioning potential witnesses, making sense of the evidence, and tracking one of the suspects across the English border to determine who is behind the disruptions. Sarah Woodbury has created a page turner with intriguing plot twists; and, once again, the justice dispensed by Ms. Woodbury's protagonists ultimately involves an incomplete disclosure of the truth, which readers will conclude is nevertheless just.

This is an enjoyable book for all readers who appreciate medieval historical fiction, but I would have enjoyed it just a little bit more if the editing had been a little bit tighter and if Ms. Woodbury had used fewer parentheticals (most of them seemed unnecessary).

Catholic Historical Fiction During the Time of Henry VIII
By Virginian
This is one of the greatest books written by Robert Hugh Benson during his short life. He incorporates Church history, world history, romance, intrigue, vocations, martyrdom, war, and family into a breathtaking historical novel. The setting is in 16th-century England. The story revolves around the gradual destruction of the monasteries by King Henry VIII and the effects of this destruction on the priests, nuns, and families that held fast to the Faith of their Fathers. The book will hold your complete attention right up to the climatic ending in the Tower of London. There are many parallels to our times.

Be Careful Which Edition You're Talking About!
By Patsy A Winters
Reading L. A. Wright's review of this book I would not have bought it -- if I didn't already have it, and realized that the reviewer was referring to another publisher's edition! (I followed the link.) This Once and Future Books edition is not only professionally retypeset with the cover designed by an award-winning graphic artist (my nephew is the editor, so I know this -- he made a point of telling me), but has "value added" in the form of a well-written and instructive foreword. It is definitely NOT just a bound typescript.

We should never judge a book by its cover in any event. So what's inside? This sort of historical novel is not my usual cup of tea, nor am I Catholic, but I enjoyed it. It's an entertaining story, if not as exciting as I prefer. I did not buy it for myself, but I'm glad I read it. I also enjoyed the other editions of Mr. Benson's works in this series. They are miles beyond the usual trash available.

A terrified young woman asks Miss Silver for help unmasking someone who has threatened her life.

Rachel Traherne does not want to meet Maud Silver. She does not want to tell her that someone has threatened her life, because she does not want that dreadful fact to be true. But see Miss Silver she must, for the stout, old-fashioned detective is the only person in London who may be able to keep her safe.

Rachel has been receiving threatening letters about her deceased father's fortune. The first two letters were vague; the third said simply, "Get ready to die." Since then she has been nearly killed three times: first by a flight of sabotaged stairs, second by fire, and third by a box of poisoned chocolates. She fears it may be a family member, jealous of her inheritance and willing to kill to get it. But who could it be? Miss Silver is going to find out.

An Early Miss Silver Mystery
By Shirley Schwartz
I can't believe that I'm the first to review a book that was written in 1939. If you are a Miss Silver fan, then you should read this book. This is an early volume from the series. It's important to see her development throughout the many years that Ms. Wentworth wrote of her. This book, like many in the series is a little dated, but it's still a smashing good mystery. Ms. Wentworth is a fine example of golden age detective story writing and quite incomparable when it comes to writing British country-house murder mysteries. In this book Miss Silver is asked by Rachel Treherne to come to her manor house to determine who among her large extended family is trying to kill her. Miss Silver investigates in her own unique style, and quickly determines who the culprit is, but then it's a matter of getting the proof.

One of the Earliest and Strongest in the Series
By drkhimxz
This third Miss Silver mystery is one of the best in the long series. Mostly, this is because the author creates a number of characters with more complexity than usual and gives Miss Silver more of a role but less dominance over her surroundings than became customary later. The central figure, inheritor of Great Wealth but also inheritor of a mandate from her father to use it both for high social causes but also for the nurturance of her older sister and other relations to varying degrees, is very well drawn to a degree that gives the book its superior qualities. We are shown clearly her strength and weaknesses in dealing with her mandate and the peculiar individualities of the family to whom she has devoted her emotions and part of her wealth. The family itself, though drawn with less detail, is still admirably portrayed, Miss Silver is brought in quite early as the heroine becomes persuaded that she may be the target of a killer within the family grouping...while remaining incredulous that such could be the case. The give and take between she and Miss Silver is rather unique for the series.
The book holds one's interest through to the denouement. In the anticlimactic concluding scene, the reaffirmation of traditional (for this era) relationships and division of responsibilities between men and women might rub some readers the wrong way:however, they do fit the times and the place, as well as the attitudinal structure of Miss Silver herself.
Those familiar with the series are quite likely to enjoy this one. Newcomers are likely to find this a good one with which to begin their reading.

Dear Me!
By Commenter77
This features one of your more reluctant wealthy clients, an irritating type who wants relief from her terrors with little or no alteration from herself. She lives in a household of mostly dependent (on her) relatives. By repeated and strikingly obvious incidents in and around this same household, she can no longer deny that someone is trying to kill her. Yet, she is absurdly indignant when Miss Silver attempts to square her with the obvious (sorry toots, but it's got to be one of them). This basically continues, barring a few lucid moments of sense. I've always found that kind of thing irritating and it wasn't any better here. She has other false assumptions toward her obligations to the brood of mostly insincere leeches. She finally gets her head on straight, but we have to endure to the end for that to take place. Nonetheless, Miss Silver is strongly on board for this one, and it may be her launch into her subsequent popularity. Every one of the character types is familiar if you've watched many family circle dramas, especially old movies and more especially old British movies. Interesting plotting and development as part of the process of the honing of the art and establishment of the Miss Silver persona.

Revolutionary young samurai with dirigibles take on Commodore Perry and his Black Ships in this alternate history steampunk technofantasy set in 1850s samurai-era Japan. In Japan of 1852, the peace imposed by the Tokugawa Shoguns has lasted 250 years. Peace has turned to stagnation, however, as the commoners grow impoverished and their lords restless. Swords rust. Martial values decay. Foreign barbarians circle the island nation’s closed borders like vultures, growing ever more demanding. Toru, a shipwrecked young fisherman rescued by American traders and taken to America, defies the Shogun’s ban on returning to Japan, determined to save his homeland from foreign invasion. Can he rouse his countrymen in time? Or will the cruel Shogun carry out his vow to execute all who set foot in Japan after traveling abroad? Armed only with his will, a few books, dirigible plans and dangerous ideas, Toru must transform the Emperor’s realm before the Black Ships come. Toru: Wayfarer Returns is an alternate history steampunk technofantasy set in 1850s samurai-era Japan and is the first book in the Sakura Steam Series, an alternate history of the tumultuous period from the opening of Japan in 1853 to the Meiji Restoration in 1868. Readers who enjoy steampunk alternate histories more typically set in Victorian England or the American Wild West may enjoy this steampunk story made fresh by the Japanese samurai setting, as well as readers who enjoy historical fiction set in Japan.

Review
"First-time author Sorensen launches her Sakura Steam series with a well-told what-if story that brings a steampunk aesthetic to real-life 1800s Japan...Sorenson cunningly blends far-out fiction with actual historical personages (many of whom may be unfamiliar to round-eyed barbarian readers) and a Meiji Restoration–era mindset.....Young adults as well as older readers can partake of the delicious genre-blending bento. Cool alternative-history yarn of yester-century Nippon, a promising steampunk-energized start." -- Kirkus Reviews

"TORU: WAYFARER RETURNS is a fast-paced historical adventure steeped in Japanese culture." -- IndieReader

"A terrifically vivid historical novel set in an 1852 Japan re-imagined along Steampunk lines....Sorensen's characters are memorably shaped, and her dialog is sharp and lively, but the real highlight of this novel is its superb world-building - considerably helped by the stunning cover. Anyone reading it will eagerly look forward to the next volume." -- Historical Novel Society

"I completely enjoyed author Stephanie R. Sorenson's creativity and ability to write a unique storyline overlying the actual time period of Japan in 1852. Author Sorenson has done a brilliant job at creating characters that her readers will connect with and care about, certainly no small feat. Any reader who enjoys steampunk, historical fiction, or just a great read in general should absolutely read Toru: Wayfarer Returns. I highly recommend this book, and am very much looking forward to reading the next in the series as soon as it is available. If it's anything like this book, it will absolutely be a worthwhile read!" -- Chris Fischer, Readers' Favorite reviewer

"Toru is a vast thought experiment, at times touching and engaging, it is also optimistic. There is the sense that we, in our time, with increasing levels of injustice in our society, could lean from a bunch of open-minded dreamers on the edge of revolution. And who wouldn't want dragon airships after all!" -- BlackRainbowBlade blog

From the Inside Flap
A page-turning adventurous romp through a history that might have been... Tōru: Wayfarer Returns, the first volume of Stephanie Sorensen's Sakura Steam series, kicks off an alternate history of the tumultuous period from the opening of Japan in 1853 to the Meiji Restoration in 1868. This volume covers the year prior to the American Commodore Perry's arrival in Japan and follows the hero and his allies as they defy the Shogun and lead Japan through a massively compressed industrial revolution.
A few scholars trace the twin tragedies of Hiroshima and Pearl Harbor back to the humiliation suffered by Japan at Perry's hands in 1853. While that may be an extreme view, the author explores in the Sakura Steam Series the question of "what would Japan's path--and the world's--have been if the Japanese had possessed the military might and will to drive Perry away instead of opening under duress as they did?"

While Sorensen's heroes and their steampunk dirigibles are fictional, she builds her rollicking adventure and cultural rich tale against the backdrop of the "real" historical Japan of that period, weaving historical figures into her story, staying true to their motivations and agendas even while warping their actions, history and a few laws of physics.

Underpinning the adventure plot is a young man's yearning for his father's approval and an honorable place in the world. A tender love story, a rowdy collection of allies and emerging steampunk technology complete the mix as Tōru fights to transform Japan's conservative society at the end of the Tokugawa sakoku isolation period.* * * * Stephanie R. Sorensen is a writer based in the Victorian mining town of Leadville, Colorado, where she lives at 10,000 feet with her husband, five chickens, two bantam English game hens and one Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. She likes her Victorian attire spiced with a little neo-Victorian futurism and the biggest bustle possible.

I was given a copy of this book for an independent review.
To follow the progress of Toru, a returned wander into the rigid kingdom of Samurai Japan, where a rigid regime of isolation has successfully maintained peace and stability in a previously dangerous land of inter tribal warring over a long period of its history is fascinating. We gradually begin to realise the restrictions of their rule and the approaching menace of the rapidly modernising world that surround it's borders against which its inward facing isolation is ill equipped to resist. The adventures of this seemingly humble peasant who gradually reveals his powerful connections in his campaign to arm his homeland against this inevitable invasion with the benefaction of powerful nobles and an inevitable heroine is a well-paced story that carries you into the fantastical world of steam-punk fantasy with ease. We are never sure if he is just a humble born who has benefited from patronage or if he is a person of importance in his own right. His battles against the rigidity of the society who's more are carefully crafted into the story are slightly tainted by his apparently unthinking acceptance of the greed and inhumanity of the America that was his refuge before the story begins. It is difficult to think he would have been seduced by such shallow philosophies if he were truly from a noble background in his home country. This is a small criticism of well-told adventure.

The Historical Revolution of Toru
By Christian Abiodun Ibiloye
It is alternate history and techno-fantasy story set in 1850s Japan, on the eve of Japan's collision with the West. Toru, a young fisherman rescued by American traders was taken to America where he worked, was educated and made friends.
Toru defies the Shogun's ban on returning to Japan through the help of Captain McHargue , determined to save his homeland from foreign invasion.
Indeed, Charles Dickens was right that "every traveler has a home of his own," and he [they] do come to appreciate it better from their traveling and wandering experiences.
The revolutionary and adventurous young samurai took on the Shogun and the foreign invaders in this historical read about the pivotal meeting between isolated Japan and the West. Armed only with his will, a few books, a Bible and 'American education' in philosophy, technology and governance, dirigible plans and dangerous ideas,Toru must transform the Emperor's realm before the return of the black ship.
It becomes more enjoyable for those interested in Japanese history and culture. And, the author made sure of that creatively and commendably taking one into the world of the Japanese.
Would be enjoyed most by those with an interest in Japanese history and culture.
I was given a copy for an unbiased and non reciprocal review.

Amazing Story!
By L. Evans
Subarashii monogatari desu! This story was superb, and I am so very glad I read it. Toru, a young man, is dropped off by his American friends on the shores of Japan, his homeland, only to turn around to face several armed Samurai. And from there, the action doesn’t let up. Having lived in Japan before, (Sapporo and Asahikawa on Hokkaido) I especially appreciated this story. I am also a fan of steampunk, so that was an extra plus for me. I loved the airships added to the story! I also thought the little romance was sweet, and I appreciated the addition of Masuyo. I always admire authors who create female characters that are strong and independent, and don’t need a man to complete them or give them purpose and worth. Masuyo and Toru are a great team. They are equals and complement each other. And I like that.
I cannot recommend this story enough. The plot and pacing were awesome, the writing was fantastic, and the story itself was something that just— surrounded me. Stephanie R. Sorensen is a great author, and I look forward to what she will put out in the future! I was given a copy of this most excellent story in exchange for an honest review.

"The magic system is fascinating and very well crafted. This is quite an epic saga, and surprisingly political. There are factions, and back biting, plenty of twists and turns, violence and bloodshed – everything epic fantasy fans enjoy."
www.bookwormblues.net

Arcane magic can be a ruinous power, despite admirable intentions.

A mysterious scroll finds its way into Lord Severun’s hands, enabling him to release a dangerous experiment upon Wesson. With Sergeant Falchion unable to forgive himself for aiding the wizard, and desperate factions taking advantage of the devastating aftermath, Falchion embarks on an arduous quest alongside friends and strangers alike. However, even if their attempt to seek aid is successful and the city is saved, they risk revealing a secret that threatens much more than Wesson alone.

From a fantasy world not too dissimilar to our own dark and bloody histories, the beginning of an epic tale is told. Incredible magic is unleashed, allies become enemies; unlikely friendships are forged, and a foul plot is discovered that will shatter the long lasting peace of Altoln and her allies, plunging them into a gritty, brutal conflict that falls far from the fluffy fairytales of old.

About the Author
Born Lancashire, England, J. P. Ashman is a Northern lad through and through. His parents love wildlife, history, fantasy and science fiction, and passed their passion on to him. They read to him from an early age and encouraged his imagination at every turn. His career may be in optics, as a manager/technician, but he loves to make time for writing and reading every day. Now living rurally in the Cotswolds with Wifey and their little Norse Goddess Freya, he's inspired daily by the views they have and the things they see, from the deer in the fields to the buzzards circling overhead. Writing is a huge part of his life and the medieval re-enactment background and tabletop gaming lend to it; when he's not writing the genre, he's either reading or playing it. He plans to keep writing, both within his current series, and those to come, whether short stories or epic tomes.

A Story Worthy of Epic
By Beester
I was a bit dismayed when starting Black Cross. The opening pages gave a lengthy list of characters and their descriptions. Ok, epic fantasy I get it but I tend to have GRRM cold sweat moments of needing index cards and a cork board until I can get everything under my belt and into my memory. So off I went into the wonderful world that Mr. Ashman has constructed. By page 50 or so I started to notice an itch at the back of my neck that something needed to happen. I thought about my motivation behind that, do I really need brain wrenching action right off the bat, to see violence or some other type of mayhem to enjoy a book from the beginning? I have read numerous works that never picked up but enjoyed them immensely such as The Iliad. Yeah, I know I really liked it but I have never in my life said I wasn't off center. :P)

By the time I had finished the book I was putting off reading more than a chapter at the time just so I could wake the next day a spend more time with the characters of the Black Cross that I have grown so fond of and now wait patiently for the next book/novella (hint hint wink wink Mr. Ashman). Black Cross doesn't really start off slow but there is a bit that needs to be introduced to get the various plot lines, yepper more than one, off and running. It gives the reader a chance to experience the characters in everyday nuances that for me only enriched my experience with each character. Mr. Ashman is weaving a web throughout the book that will end some plot lines and expand others that will continue on in the series. I stopped trying to guess a third of the way into the book and sat back, relaxed and kept reading.

The characters are well developed. I am not a fan of bringing out everything about a character right off or even throughout the entire book if it is the first book of a series. I want mystery, with hints of insight into their past and future. It leaves room for surprise and fulfillment. Ms. Ashman accomplishes this with all of the characters. Biv and Sears are my fav throughout the book. A Laurel and Hardy relationship to be sure but the play between them only heightens what you don’t know about them even though they make references from time to time alluding to the depth of their understanding of each other and their relationship. I also enjoyed the cockney accent given to the two characters reveling in sounding it out in my head. Told you before, I am off center. hehe.

The environment involves humans, elves, and dwarfs although you don’t get to meet any dwarfs in the first book. The diversity of the races along with the diversity within the races is pleasant. One would expect the same type of fantasy trope as you read along but there is some surprising elements of the humans that I haven’t read in fantasy before and a slight different angle on the elves as well. I really enjoyed all aspects of this book from environment, character development to the development of the plot lines and where they lead too. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants a fantasy novel that will be a fresh aspect in many avenues from the typical tropes of fantasy that we know.

I also enjoyed, my opinion and assessment, the underlying messages delivered by Mr. Ashman’s writing. One person despite what meme’s and other philosophical bozos tell you can’t change the world. Statistically even that one person that looks to have change the world had help since birth to get to that point so yeah, one person can’t change the world. What the reader sees in the Black Cross is not that any person should set out to change the world but go forth and do what is right. If you are fortunate you may touch one life, one area or community in a way that will set things in motion to be just a bit better than they would have been otherwise. One of the MC sets things in motion but after that no one act of his makes or breaks the plot or the final goal. But what if that MC decided to not do the right thing to stand up and act? Would the final goal still been achieved? Possibly but we will not know that because that MC decided to act and not sit by and watch or just complain and do nothing. We all can learn something from that in the Black Cross. Doing the right thing should be its own reward and not the expectation of the positive consequence that may never come to fruition.

Buy the Black Cross, you will not be disappointed and more than likely will add a new favorite author to your list.

An epic fantasy novel you should definitely read...
By Shawn Wickersheim
The author creates an epic, richly-detailed and powerfully written fantasy novel. As others have pointed out, the novel has a more gently-paced start, but once the multiple storylines are up and running, the novel quickly kicks into high gear and does not disappoint. At times gritty and dark, especially during the intense fight scenes, the book isn't all gloom and doom with the darkness often offset by the humorous banter between two of the books most interesting characters. I think fans of Mark Lawrence, Joe Abercrombie or David Gemmell will enjoy this book.
