The Whisper of the Axe, by Richard Condon

For the sake of vengeance, a woman plots to destroy the US government

It’s June 1976, and a bullet has shattered Agatha Teel’s shoulder. The gunman has fled, gushing blood from a bullet wound of his own, and Teel has just a few minutes to save her own life. She marches herself to the bathroom—the most lavish room she has ever owned—strips, and does what she can to dress the wound. A needle of morphine dulls the pain enough for her to walk, and she wraps a sable coat around her nude body and presses for the elevator. She can’t die tonight. She has a coup to stage.

Six months earlier, Teel set her plot to overthrow the government of the United States in motion. On July 4, 1976, she will crush America beneath her heel. For Teel, it’s not about ideology, nor politics. This is strictly personal: It’s revenge.

Excellent Stories
By J.V.
These stories are about a man who fights with a gun or his fists to protect the innocent. He is a good man.
The stories have some violence. They have themes of friendship and family values. There is a fair amount of suspense as things don't always go well in the fights.

The Smallest Tadpole's War in the Land of Mysterious Waters, by Diane Swearingen

Based on a true story. In early 1861, Florida was a rural frontier state that had joined the Union just fifteen years before. Its population of 140,000 was by far the smallest of any of the states that formed the Confederacy. Nearly 63,000 of the population were African Americans, most of whom were slaves working in an agricultural-based economy. The majority of the white population was relatively poor and rural.
In the 1860's a Northern newspaper referred to Florida as, “the smallest tadpole in the dirty pool of succession.”
Prologue
It’s best I tell their story. Their story is my story, our
lives woven together by the threads of history. When
Thomas married Louise in 1855, he adopted me and
we became a family, sharing the stories that shaped
us, stories that would be told and retold the way
families do.
At eleven, I became the man of the house when
Thomas, a Lieutenant in the 3rd Florida Infantry, left
to rendezvous with the Western Army of the
Confederacy. I was at his side when we defended
Tallahassee at the Battle of Natural Bridge, driving
back the Union troops, saving Tallahassee and
making it the only unoccupied capital in the
Confederacy. I watched Thomas climb the steps of
the Florida Capitol, as a Representative and a
Senator.
Thomas would tell me, “Henry, I believe the
measure of a man is how he answers when duty
calls.” The Florida Constitution in 1885 was his last
call to duty.
My favorite book when I was growing up was
Thomas’s diary. It inspired me to learn to read. Like
a pirate who found a buried chest, I couldn’t wait to
discover the treasure it held.
I have recited every story in my mind a hundred
times over to keep their voices from fading. This tale
is mine to tell.
I heard the Capitol had been remodeled in 1902
and I took my grandson to see it. We were traveling
on the St. Augustine Road just about sunset when
we saw a glow. The Capitol had a new dome that
glistened in the setting sun. As we got closer, we saw
the added wings.
I walked the boy past the Mountain Howitzers
that had guarded the entrance for more than fifty
years and up the grand staircase. We saw the cupola
from the inside and noticed the indoor plumbing. I
never dreamed I would see so many changes.
I knew it was time then to honor my promise,
time for me to start writing. I am one of the only ones
left who can remember the early days, the days
when Florida was just a “tadpole” and so was I.

An engaging story reminiscent of a Twain journey.
By Appreciative Reader
Diane Swearingen has presented a serious and engaging story with the clarity of language and writing style that is reminiscent of a Twain journey. I enjoyed the use of humor which helps bring life to these characters. The economy of words is impressive. Her voice is distinctive and seemingly intuitive. Her descriptions of Florida flora and fauna are poetic. The pages turned fast and I found myself hoping that Diane will have other stories for us to enjoy. While highly entertained, I also feel much better educated and closer to Florida's historical roots.

Southern Historical Fiction at it best!
By Florida girl
Reading the story was like sitting in an old southern wagon, slowly traveling through the roads of a time lost, right here in my own backyard,of North Florida, The book is set in the South during the Civil War Era. It was a wonderful ride with faces I never knew, that now feel like old friends. Diane Swearingen takes the reader on well researched journey through history with a story that gives a reader a fresh view of the lives, times, and humanity of a sometimes dark side of our American experience. Full of surprises!

Not Benson's best writing though very interesting
By deborah
I am growing to really love Robert Hugh Benson's writing, but this is not one of his best books.

In it, Richard Raynal is a young man living as a "solitary" - he is voluntarily living alone and in outward poverty in service to God near a rectory. His life may seem similar to that of a monk, but he has not taken any vows, he's just a solitary servant of God at an unspecified time in the early Middle Ages. The story is told from the point of view of the parish priest, who at times is bewildered by Richard's actions.

The plot turns on Richard's conviction that God has given him a message to deliver to the King of England. To obey, he must leave his beloved, simple home in the rural countryside, and undertake a very perilous journey to see the King. In this he must act with immense faith, because although he has discerned God's command to see the King, he has no idea what the message will be.

After being greatly abused in the town as he attempts to get access to the King, he receives and delivers his message, but the King immediately becomes very ill. Now blamed for causing the King's illness, he suffers a prolonged punishment at the hands of the King's court. Through all, he concentrates on the sufferings of Christ and holding on with all his strength to the union of his soul with God.

The story is well written and very interesting - it is conveyed as notes taken from the (presumably fictional) account written by Richard's priest.

But it isn't, for me, one of Benson's best because the story itself is weak - Richard's message hardly seems to have the ultimate importance or significance assigned to it. Also, the progress of Richard's soul, conveyed in glimpses by a third person who does not easily understand him or his actions, is difficult to grasp.

This seemed in a way like a rough draft or a first attempt that was fully realized in "No Other Gods". I recommend that book much more highly.

Absorbing story, touching and well worth reading.
By littleoldme
Benson packed a lot of satisfactory reading into such a short book.
Though there are very important lessons to be learned from this retelling of Richard Raynal's life, Benson's writing is not at all pedantic. The characters are three-dimensional human beings, with foibles and virtues like ours.
You could think of this book as a longish parable. We learn much about the main character and the people he encounters when he leaves his hut in the country to travel to give a message (from God) to the King. Though the story could take place in any century since the beginning of Christianity, we are taught all sorts of memorable details about life in the 15th century.
I loved this treasure of a book, and can see why some people say it was the author's favorite work.

Catherine De Medici, by Honoré de Balzac

Few persons in the present day know how plain and unpretentious were the dwellings of the burghers of Paris in the sixteenth century, and how simple their lives. Perhaps this simplicity of habits and of thought was the cause of the grandeur of that old bourgeoisie which was certainly grand, free, and noble,—more so, perhaps, than the bourgeoisie of the present day. Its history is still to be written; it requires and it awaits a man of genius. This reflection will doubtless rise to the lips of every one after reading the almost unknown incident which forms the basis of this Study and is one of the most remarkable facts in the history of that bourgeoisie. It will not be the first time in history that conclusion has preceded facts.

It's by Balzac!
By Amazon Customer
Looking for a biography of Catherine De Medici, I was astonished to find this one, written by Balzac! Since he's one of my favorite authors, I bought it immediately. It is an interesting read, but very early in my read, I realized that it didn't mean too much if I didn't already know the story of Catherine's life and what the French people thought of her during her lifetime and shortly thereafter. So I stopped and read a recent (and more complete) biography of her so I would know what he's referring to. After that, I was able to follow along quite well. Mostly Balzac is trying to dispel some of the slanders told about her, which people of his time may have believed if they had no other source of information about her. I'm not sure I would call this a biography, since it doesn't cover Catherine's entire life. Balzac covers her time as queen and queen mother, which I have to admit is the most important part of her life. This isn't as much fun as Balzac's fiction, but it is enjoyable and reasonably accurate.

'as calculating and cold as Reason itself'
By sally tarbox
I read this immediately after completing Frieda's excellent biography of Catherine de Medici and was glad to have a familiarity with her life while reading this. This is not another biography, however, nor a treatise on the lady.
The first (main) part of the book is a narrative of an idealistic young Calvinist, Christophe Lecamus, who is a willing participant in the Prince de Conde's plan to gain access to Catherine with communications from the Protestant faction. I found this section really brought history to life from Balzac's descriptions of 16th century Paris to the personalities at court. Certainly his take on some situations is vastly different from that of Frieda; he imagines huge antipathy between Catherine and her young daughter-in-law Mary (later Queen of Scots) whereas Frieda describes a warm relationship. Similarly Catherine's determination to remove Mary (and her hated Guise relatives) causes her to refuse her son a life-saving trepanning operation. Frieda considers it absurd propaganda that she would have let her son die. Who knows?

The second piece is set a little later - Catherine's second son, Charles IX, is now on the throne, an unwell and unhealthy young man, ever distrustful of his mother and her poisons. He brings in her alchemists, the Ruggieris, for questioning. I found the discussion on their craft somewhat over my head but the historic picture of this king was fascinating.

Third and finally we are transported to an aristocratic party in 1786. One guest claims to have seen and debated with Catherine over the events in her life. She sums up 'to leave two hostile principles at work in a government with nothing to balance them...is sowing the seed of revolution' and continues 'a revolution which is still progressing and which you may achieve.Yes, YOU, who hear me.'
Only in the last sentence is it revealed that the two guests are Robespierre and Marat.

Very interesting read, totally interesting to any history book on the subject

Review
Booklist

"...readers will be intrigued by Duffy's believable, free-spirited protagonist."

Kirkus Reviews"Overall, this is a fun read with a hard edge...A sentimental but never sappy coming-of-age tale that hits all the right notes in unexpected ways."

From the Back Cover
Very few know of the important role women played in the early years of car racing. THE ARTICHOKE QUEEN tells the story of Prudence Baylor, a young and beautiful woman in the 1950's. Leaving her troubled home for San Francisco, she sinks into an underworld of jazz and lust before discovering the local amateur car racing scene. Her success there launches her into the regional spotlight as a reluctant celebrity and beauty queen, and ignites a dizzying romance.

But Prudence quickly finds her luck and skill pushed to the limit: the races riskier, the rewards higher, her romantic life becoming all too complicated, and in an infamously dangerous road race across Mexico - where she is poised for victory and international acclaim - it seems her whole life is finally about to spin out of control.

Shimmering and evocative, tender but tough, THE ARTICHOKE QUEEN is a portrait of bygone Americana, and captures a groundbreaking woman's struggle for identity, love, and ultimately, redemption.

I hope this isn't the last we've seen of Prudence Baylor.
By Shamus Gillen
Prudence rings in all of us in one way or another. Her courage inspires us as much as her challenges endear her to us. Owen Duffy's novel provides a rewarding journey into the bold and broken world of Prudence Baylor. The careful cultivation of the primary characters and the gravitational inertia of the story arc provide a fulfilling journey throughout.

Duffy's attention to detail really brings life to the supporting cast, times, and challenges Prudence faces in her quest to reconcile herself to her past and future. This is a book that nimbly transports you away, even if you're sipping drinks on a sunny beach. Bravo to Mr. Duffy on a book certain to bring enjoyment to everyone from vintage car buffs to new mothers, and all in between.

I hope this isn't the last we’ve seen of Prudence Baylor.

Prose like Poetry
By June Star
A vision and a voice. The conquest of fear in a world of uncertainties…close-up observations of situations and realistic character portrayals. Duffy’s prose is like poetry. “It seemed like the room had flooded and they were swimming in warm water, being washed together into a deep, clear pool.” A master storyteller who doesn’t waste words…resonant of O’Connor and Steinbeck. This story makes me nostalgic and homesick for a time I never knew. An admirable debut novel. A pleasant surprise.

Solid book on hiking the AT, more thorough than some others I've seen.
By BruceK
I will come back and review this more completely, but I have now read several
AT hiking books. I am interested in the subject and the project but I have not gotten
very much from the books. Most of them are very superficial and patchy.

I just got this book an hour or so ago and have been listening to it on Kindle text-
to-speech on my Kindle Fire HD 10, which is great. The voice is almost like an
audiobook and following along with my eyes make the ideas sink in better.

"A Sign Of Madness: Re-Hiking the 2,185 Mile Appalachian Trail" is logical, linear
and well done ... but I have to note early grammatical errors and typos - this
needs proofread.

But just in a few pages I can tell this is the kind of book I am looking for. He covers
some hardware failures, suggestions for hikers, and even sticks up for socialism,
which in this year of Bernie Sanders running for President I was admiring of. I think
it takes a lot of guts to challenge an old soldier on the AT, and write about it and
how people do not understand their best interests - from just a logical point of view.

There are good solid suggestions here, and a modeling of the attitude on needs to
undertake this hike. Don't know yet if I will do it, or if I will find a way to work up to
it, but this book is the first hiking books that has been more than fluff, and I can see
that in the early chapters.

More later.

I read a lot of hiking books and usually enjoy vicariously walking along with the authors
By Amazon Customer
I had a hard time relating to the author. The book has some insightful and humorous moments, but most of the time the author is complaining and judgmental of other hikers. He needs to remember that each person hikes their on hike. And his comments about seventeen year old girls and other women flirting with him are just embarrassing. I read a lot of hiking books and usually enjoy vicariously walking along with the authors. I couldn't wait for this one to be over.

A well written book, that gives a very good account of hiking the A.T.
By DCM767
I’ve read at least 12 books on the A.T. and “A sign of Madness” is in my top 3. Like another review said; he doesn’t ramble, trying to name as many thru-hikers with trail names.
I am a few years older than Mark, but can relate to his need for company while balancing solitude.
He effortlessly conveys what it is REALLY like to hike the trail. It is very difficult. I know, because I was on it this year, and during a rainstorm and the rocks of good old Rocksylvania, fell and sustained a moderate concussion.

He has a sharp wit; very intelligent, thought out humor just touching on sarcasm. He makes his story 3 dimensional. I felt like I was walking right behind him. He did this ‘walk’ 30 or so years earlier, and decided in his 50’s if he could still do it again. He realizes he is not the same young man back then, and accepts his aging. I liked that.
Like a friend told me the other day; “This getting old business, couldn’t come at a worse time!”

I enjoyed his insights as to why people hike the trail, why some (younger) hikers ZOOM thru the trail, not noticing the beauty around them.
I encountered many of these young bucks, who thought only in miles not memories. “Mile Eaters'
If you want a very good overview of what to expect on the trail, I would highly recommend this book!! David M

Romeo and Juliet (Illustrated): Free Audiobook Link, by William Shakespeare

Romeo and Juliet is a tragic play written early in the career of William Shakespeare about two teenage "star-cross'd lovers" whose untimely deaths ultimately unite their feuding households. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal "young lovers".

William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564 – died 23 April 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon" (or simply "The Bard"). His surviving works consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language, and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18 he married Anne Hathaway, who bore him three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Between 1585 and 1592 he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of the playing company the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others. Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1590 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the sixteenth century. Next he wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest examples in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights. Many of his plays were published in editions of varying quality and accuracy during his lifetime, and in 1623 two of his former theatrical colleagues published the First Folio, a collected edition of his dramatic works that included all but two of the plays now recognized as Shakespeare's. Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the nineteenth century. The Romantics, in particular, acclaimed Shakespeare's genius, and the Victorians hero-worshipped Shakespeare with a reverence that George Bernard Shaw called "bardolatry". In the twentieth century, his work was repeatedly adopted and rediscovered by new movements in scholarship and performance. His plays remain highly popular today and are consistently performed and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world. Source: Wikipedia

About the Author
Arguably the greatest English-language playwright, William Shakespeare was a seventeenth-century writer and dramatist, and is known as the Bard of Avon. Under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I, he penned more than 30 plays, 154 sonnets, and numerous narrative poems and short verses. Equally accomplished in histories, tragedies, comedy, and romance, Shakespeare s most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, and As You Like It.

Like many of his contemporaries, including Christopher Marlowe, Shakespeare began his career on the stage, eventually rising to become part-owner of Lord Chamberlain s Men, a popular dramatic company of his day, and of the storied Globe Theatre in London.

Extremely popular in his lifetime, Shakespeare s works continue to resonate more than three hundred years after his death. His plays are performed more often than any other playwright s, have been translated into every major language in the world, and are studied widely by scholars and students.

... by William Shakespeare is a heart wrenching play of love and pure devotion that inspires beautiful gestures of excitement ..

“Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare is a heart wrenching play of love and pure devotion that inspires beautiful gestures of excitement and adventure. I have always wondered what it feels like to experience the surreal emotions of being a “star crossed lover” and how it effects your life decisions. This well-written, yet dramatized play gave me a new perspective on the possibilities and consequences of love. Romeo and Juliet are children of feuding families. The Capulets and Montagues compete for better social standing and wealth. Romeo, son of Montague and Juliet, daughter of Capulet meet at a party on a night that would change both of their lives forever.
The two “star crossed lovers” spend a seemingly short week together, which is filled with excitement, love, drama, and tragedy. I really liked the unique and desirable relationship that Romeo and Juliet share. Especially, in the famous balcony scene when Romeo professes his true feelings for Juliet, late at night after the party. “Two of the fairest stars in all the heaven, having some business, do entreat her eyes to twinkle in their spheres till they return. What if her eyes were there, they in her head? The brightness of her cheek would shame those stars, as daylight doth a lamp. Her eyes in heaven would through the airy region stream so bright that birds would sing and think it were not night” (Shakespeare 2.2.20). This is my favorite play for a very good reason as you can see! It is always expressing either happy or sad emotions to draw the reader in and create a fixated desire to find out what happens next.
Juliet’s personality of playful flirtation and quick to action decisions causes her inevitable ending. Romeo who is a hopeless romantic, also is an immature but lovable young man who at times, over exaggerates. Regardless, he is still an interesting character of courage. Together, the “star crossed lovers” will exemplify love, rebellion, and devotion. I would advise this tragic yet surreal love story to anyone who is a hopeless romantic, enjoys plot twists, or someone in search of a good read. William Shakespeare gives a perfect insight to the bond of tragic love between Romeo and Juliet. The play is written in Old English so I would highly advise anyone who may have difficulty understanding the meaning to purchase the translated version. “Romeo and Juliet” is an outstanding play that amplifies the meaning of love and is a theatrical performance of love written many years ago that will live on to be an immortal story of love and tragedy.

I’ve never experience love for a significant other but the play Romeo and Juliet showed me the decisions, risks and other things that come with it. William Shakespeare expressed the love connection between Romeo and Juliet so dramatically that I felt like I was there. I felt like I was the one who secretly married the enemy’s son and then he being banished by the prince then pretended to be dead so I wouldn’t be married off to someone else. I felt like I was on an emotional rollercoaster just from that. That’s why this is a book that deserves to be read.
Juliet is one of the main reasons I love this book. She had common sense for such a young lady. She knew her morals and standards even if sometimes she didn’t abide by them. When Romeo kissed her the night of the party she felt so guilty because she knew it was too soon.
Everything is dramatized and it’s amazing and can also be amusing. For example when Romeo told Juliet he loves her the night he met her, it made me feel like “Well that escalated quickly” but it reminded me of how teenagers rush into things. Showing how exaggerating a simple thing can be. Another could be when Juliet was indecisive of what she wanted that same night. One second she said everything is moving too quickly and she knew she shouldn’t had did it and the next moment she makes him prove his love my marrying her. I found this humorous because it was like she was having an argument with herself and I could picture how she was speaking and acting.
There’s also a lot of drama because the Montagues hated the Capulets and vice versa. Unfortunately, Juliet happened to be a Capulet and Romeo was a Montague. Another reason to keep reading Romeo and Juliet.
The other characters in the book make it more realistic. Tybalt is Juliet’s protective cousin who also loves to fight. I felt I could relate because doesn’t almost everyone have that one family member that would do that? Romeo and Juliet is relatable because the reader would feel like they ending up in that predicament.
The larger theme of the book is love and war, but both Romeo and Juliet wanted to take the risks and be together. A lot of people in love tend to do anything for their significant other so the play just shows the feeling of authenticity and being put in their situation.
Even though the story took place so long ago, it still can be relatable and keep the reader intrigued. Read Romeo and Juliet it will want to make you yell, say “aww”, and feel so much more. I highly recommend the writing to everyone, especially teenagers. Many of the threats and choices were made and decided. It made me feel like I actually experienced love for a special someone.

My love as deep
By Paige
“My bounty is as boundless as the sea, My love as deep; the more I give to thee, The more I have, for both are infinite.” This is the words that Romeo and Juliet confess for each other after being familiar for about two days. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the famous play that is placed in Verona, Italy that includes the famous relationship that is stereotypical to everyone in this modern day. Was their love really that perfect?

In the story Shakespeare does a great job of making their love seem so real but at the same time it is hard to believe because early in the book we learn that Romeo has just gotten heart broken and is trying to move on. He attends this party boldly because it is hosted by a family feuding with his own family. It is a costume party so he is able to sneak in with a disguise. During this party he meets Juliet who is apart of this feuding family. At this point we almost see Juliet as a quick cover up for his recent heart break.

Though from this point Shakespeare convinces us of this relentless love between them and the powerful emotions show us that they do not let this ongoing conflict between their families get between them. Even though they are not supposed to affiliate with the other family, they make these risks for each other because they believe that their everlasting love is fate and something that can't be stopped.

They swear by the moon, but Juliet makes him swear by something else because the moon is constantly changing by going away and she wants something that is infinite and lasts forever. Their love continues to thrive and is proven to be this amazing thing but throughout the story there is always that doubt that it may not be so amazing and will run out.

Overall, when reading this story I enjoyed the love aspect of it and how two people can feel so passionate about each other after knowing each other for such a short time. The way that they connected so quickly got to me and showed me the passion they had and their want to spend every waking moment together. Not only did the romantic aspect appeal to me but the other conflicts that came about and were overcome also made me want to keep reading to see what would happen next.

Romeo and Juliet is probably one of the most recognized tragedy and can often be perceived as “the perfect love”. I think if you read this book you can perceive their love as this amazing things but many also see it as a hot mess. In my opinion, I give it a ' stars and I think it is a classic play that everyone should read and learn from in their life time. Guess you will have to take my advice and click that order button. I am sure you will not regret it!

Elizabethan romance for men
By Franklana
***READ EVERY NOVEL WRITTEN BY STANLEY J. WEYMAN***

Weyman was a very popular writer of historical fiction during 1890-1930's. I've only discovered him in 2012, and consider him to be incredibly overlooked as a classic author. His novels fall somewhere between Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Henry Rider Haggard.
-Like Austen, his novels feature an antihero who is foolish and/or humbled in circumstances, but who's intrinsic virtue wins out.
-Like Dickens, his novels depict realism and detailed observation of all social strata from a period. Every character is given real animation and depth, even if only for a paragraph.
-Like Haggard, his novels have an incredible interwoven pace of action, plots, and subplots.

However, Weyman is definitely my favorite British author because his mastery of the written word allows for a clarity of reading that is instantly rich in imagery. Combine this with his ability to animate his characters and unfold a strenuous plot. There is plenty of tension in every novel, each one a page turner.
-----------------
Francis Cludde is set in Elizabethan England when the Spanish/Catholic faith held sway over Europe, and people dared to be Protestant. Francis is a temperamental, rash boy-man who discovers his shameful parentage, and sets out from the protection of his uncle and wealthy comforts to build a name for himself. He rescues a protestant Duchess by fighting off her persecutor in multiple encounters. He learns what it means to be honorable or deceitful. And we learn the virtues of an Englishman as a hero and a lover, in Elizabethan times.

Cludde is no Clod
By Karen Amrhein
I've read several of Weyman's novels, including "Under the Red Robe", "In King's Byways", and "The Wild Geese". "The Story of Francis Cludde" -- despite its most unprepossessing title -- is my favorite. This is a gripping story that only lags once or twice. Set in England and The Netherlands of the mid-16th Century, the novel has lots of action, intrigue, betrayal, loyalty, and wit -- everything one needs in a swashbuckler / historical romance. The writing style is elegant but clear, quite far superior to most modern prose. If you enjoy Dumas, Orczy, Sabatini, Justin Huntly McCarthy, or Anthony Hope, you'll like as not take pleasure in "Francis Cludde".

The Vampire of Northanger (Unnatural Austen) (Volume 1), by Bryce Anderson

"...one could be forgiven for dismissing her as a rather dismal, unqualified heroine." Catherine Morland, an awkward young lady enchanted by gothic novels and their promise of adventure, finds those promises unexpectedly fulfilled. Her simple holiday to Bath has taken quite the turn, becoming a contest against vampires, hellhounds, supper invitations, and usuriously priced muslin. The reluctant Catherine takes up cross and stake to pursue the vampire-hunting trade in as ladylike a fashion as she can. But she is herself pursued by a blood drinker as enamoured of her as he is of history and architecture. When the amiable Henry Tilney requests her company at storied Northanger Abbey, the invitation promises an escape from mortal danger. But among the spires and columns of ancient Northanger, our heroine's hidden strength shall be pitted against perils unimagined. The scents of blood and blossoming romance mingle in the air. Will Catherine's adventure culminate in matrimony or in bloodshed? Jane Austen fans, keep a firm grip upon your crossbows. This is not the Northanger Abbey you remember.

About the Author
Bryce Anderson, part man, part machine, all...ways typing stuff down on a computer. He mostly writes sci-fi and fantasy, but sometimes branches out into political rants, ransom notes, and passive-aggressive post-its. His first book, written at the age of six, told the story of an unspecified number of time traveling dinosaurs. For reasons which thirty-eight-year-old Bryce can't fully comprehend, six-year-old Bryce decided that the T. Rex was some kinda robot. When the dinosaurs emerged from their time travel vortex, fighter jets shot at them! That was the whole plot, and as far as Bryce was concerned, that was as much plot as it needed. Later books turned out better. He hopes. In an alternate dimension, Bryce rules over the five lunar colonies with an iron fist. In this one, he lives in Salt Lake City.

Jane Austen meets Dracula and it's fun
By Kit Dunsmore
This Jane Austen-vampire mash-up is a clever use of the familiar and the macabre. Of all the Austen novels one might add some horror to, Northanger Abbey is the perfect choice, because it is about "horrid" thrillers and their avid readers. Anderson makes excellent use of the characters and situations provided by Austen and then adds a gothic layer, turning some of well-known characters into vampires and others into vampire hunters. Catherine Morland is her usual self: the atypical heroine we happily root for even though she lacks the traits she thinks all heroines require. Throughout, we worry if she will wind up with her beloved Henry, uncertain if she will live long enough to do so.

Austen fans will love this re-interpretation of Northanger Abbey because the characters stay true to their original conception while tackling entirely new territory. Anderson uses phrases lifted from other Austen novels that fans will recognize, but they don't irritate at all. They are added with a wink and smile, to remind us that everything we are reading is all in fun. I don't know how vampire fans will feel. I enjoyed it because the author never takes himself too seriously. There are some lovely jokes and light-hearted moments to keep this book from getting too dark or grim. I think Ms. Austen would approve.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Anderson uses the same style of writing ...
By Person
I thoroughly enjoyed it. Anderson uses the same style of writing that Jane Austen uses, to good effect. In this case I would say that his book pays homage to Austen's, and retains the full dimensions of the characters with some interesting twists. The humor is dry and entertaining, with many laugh-out-loud moments. Reader beware of venues requiring silent reading!
