The Cruel Sea, by Nicholas Monsarrat

Based on the author's own vivid experiences, The Cruel Sea is the nail-biting story of the crew of HMS Compass Rose, a corvette assigned to protect convoys during World War II.

Darting back and forth across the icy North Atlantic, Compass Rose played a deadly cat-and-mouse game with packs of German U-boats lying in wait beneath the ocean waves. Packed with tension and vivid descriptions of agonizing U-boat hunts, this tale of the most bitter and chilling campaign of the war tells of ordinary men who had to master their own fears before they could face a brutal menace - one that would strike without warning from the deep.

I Am What I Am.
By A Customer
This book literally changed my life.
In the eleventh grade in Greenville, South Carolina, i had an English teacher who designated Thursday as "Free Reading Day" and encouraged the entire class to read anything they wanted to (well, within limits -- "Playboy" would have been Right Out, i'm sure.) -- and, in case you had nothing of your own, she laid out an assortment of magazines and books on a table at the front of the room.

On that table, one Thursday, was a copy of "The Cruel Sea". Since i've always been at least a bit interested in sea stories, and it looked interesting, i picked it up. From the first i was hooked solidly.

In the next three or so years, i reread it twice at least, possibly more than that.

And then i joined the Navy -- and i am sure that it was because of what i read in this book, and what i sensed behind it, in what Monsarrat -- who, like his viewpoint character, Lockhart, was there from the beginning, working his way up to command his own ship before the end of the war -- didn't so much say as assume about the sea and the Navy -- *any* Navy.

Monsarrat presents us here with a brotherhood of the sea, corny as that idea may sound. Sailors, more than the other Armed Forces, tend to regard other sailors -- even enemy sailors -- as brothers in arms, and, as Monsarrat says, the only true enemy is the cruel sea itself.
As he shows us here, the sailor who was your enemy five minutes ago, who was trying to kill you as you tried to kill him, is merely another survivor to be rescued from the cruel sea once you've sunk his ship.

And, even more so, as Monsarrat portrays it, there is a kind of brotherhood that binds sailors in the same Navy together in very mcuh a family manner -- you may not like your cousin, but you want to know what's happening to him and, when all is said and done, he IS your relative.
The best summation of this sort of attitude (which i felt to some extent myself during my time in the US Navy) comes when Ericson, the Captain, is touring his new ship as she stands under construction in a Glasgow shipyard; he meets one of his future officers, and mentions the name of his previous ship, which was lost with over three-quarters of her crew, and realises that"

"He's heard about 'Compass Rose', he probably remembers the exact details--that she went down in seven minutes, that we lost eighty men out of ninety-one. He knows all about it, like everyone else in the Navy, whether they're in destroyers in the Mediterranean or attached to the base at Scapa Flow: it's part of the linked feeling, part of the fact of family bereavement. Thousands of sailors felt personally sad when they read about her loss; Johnson was one of them, though he'd never been within a thousand miles of 'Compass Rose' and had never heard her name before."

To be part of a band of brothers like that is a proud thing, and Monsarrat captures it perfectly.

He also captures the terrified boredom of being in enemy territory with nothing happening as you wait for the enemy to make the first move, and the shock, confusion and horror of combat (particularly sea combat, in which the battlefield itself is the deadly, patient enemy of both sides).

And he captures the glories and rewards of life at sea, the beauty of a glorious clear dawn at sea, the stars and the moon and the wake at night and so much more.

This is the book that made a sailor out of me.

It will tell you what it is to be a sailor.

An astonishing portrayal of the human side of war
By D. Cloyce Smith
"The Cruel Sea" focuses on the British naval experience during World War II--more specifically, on the crew of a corvette during the first half of the war and, to a lesser extent, of a frigate during its waning years. Like most war stories, the plotting is at times necessarily predictable (yet still thrilling), but Monsarrat's epic is a cut above in both its human element (even in its occasional depiction of Germans) and in its presentation of the morally gray aspects of war. This is no ode to blind patriotism. Instead, the novel is an elegy on the selfless bravery and selfish survival instincts of a group of sailors whose reasons for being in the war are as varied as the men themselves: the stern but fair-minded Lieutenant-Commander Ericson, the indolent and tyrannical (and somewhat comical) First Lieutenant Bennett, the nervous and self-doubting Sub-Lieutenant Ferraby, the level-headed and thoughtful Sub-Lieutenant Lockhart (who, I would guess, is Monsarrat's alter ego), and a supporting cast of dozens. There are some spine-chilling and devastating battle scenes, but the book never once loses its focus: the men (and women) who fought and endured the war.
Another surprising aspect of "The Cruel Sea" is its intense lyricism. There are many sentences and descriptions that linger in the mind long after one has finished the novel. The death a crew member: "He did not exactly surrender to the sea, but he stopped caring much whether he lived or died; and on this night, an ambiguous will was not enough." An officer finding out his girlfriend is pregnant: "The child would be the occasion of their marriage, not the cause for it." Equally impressive is the novel's unusual wit--humor far beyond the stereotypical bawdiness of sailors: the friendly banter between crew members, the scrapes between men on leave and family members or other civilians, the hilarious clash of cultures when the frigate is docked for repairs in New York City.
Generally, I am averse to "war novels" (with the exceptions of the usual famous classics); I'd rather read the real thing--journalism or history--and forego the shallow characterizations and poor writing so common to the genre of military fiction. So I can't explain what caused me to pick up this 500-page book, but I am certainly glad I did. This novel is a neglected classic and should be read by an audience far beyond the aficionados of war novels.

War in the North Atlantic
By Paul McGrath
This is an exciting and yet very poignant novel of naval warfare which took place in the North Atlantic during World War II. It focuses primarily on two English naval officers whose job it was to escort--with first an inadequate corvette and then a frigate--the numerous convoys that went back and forth across the Atlantic throughout the course of the war.

It was a difficult job to begin with and got worse: by 1941 Allied shipping was being destroyed by German U-Boats at an alarming rate. During one memorable journey, eleven of the 21 ships they were sent to escort were sunk. This was an enormous toll, both in supplies and in lives lost.

What this great book does is give us a first hand view of the action, and also the effect that it had on these men, and the lives of those around them. To be sure there is blood and gore here, but it is not sensationalized or glorified. It is simply recorded in a straightforward manner, and is all the more chilling because of it. What is really emphasized is the psychological effect. We get a clear picture of their exhaustion, their fear, their terror, and their frustration in their inability to deal effectively (at least early on), with an unseen and deadly enemy.

They are at sea for months at a time and incapable of dealing with family problems on shore: philandering wives, sick mothers, far-away sons and loved ones. Their homes and villages are being bombed. They begin to feel hatred--not only of the enemy, but of the ship itself, and all that it represents: exhaustion, terror, helplessness, and death.

The captain must make terrible decisions at a moment's notice. After one attack, he steams towards where he believes a U-boat to be, an area which also happens to be occupied by English survivors of an earlier wreck. He decides he must drop his depth charges, knowing for certain that these sailors will die. Later, he agonizes over whether there was a U-boat there to begin with.

We get a sense of the dangerous nature of the sea itself. There is no place to go during wild Atlantic storms, and sometimes they last for days. Everything in the ship is tossed around. There is no hot food. Sleep is impossible when you are routinely thrown out of your bunk. Everybody is banged and bruised and sometimes severely injured by suddenly being heaved against a bulkhead. Of course there is also the terror of being swept overboard entirely. The only saving grace was that, during a storm, the U-boats didn't attack.

The book covers this aspect of the war, and covers it thoroughly, from 1939, which is chapter one, to 1945, which is chapter seven. It is written from the perspective of adult men and women we learn to know well and come to care about deeply. We are saddened when they are wounded, or killed. And the termination of the love affair between the first mate and his "Wren" was nothing less than heart-wrenching. This is a great novel, and belongs on the shelf with perhaps the half-dozen or so of the greatest novels of World War II.

The May Flower, and Miscellaneous Writings, by Harriet Beecher Stowe

In 1852, the United States of America was anything but united. The divisive issue of slavery was roiling the nation, which argued ad nauseam about the extension of slavery in new states as the nation pushed westward. Less than a decade later, Americans would fight each other in a Civil War that would claim over half a million lives before it was all said and done.
That same year, Harriet Beecher Stowe, an ardent abolitionist in the Northeast, published her famous anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, which became an instant hit in the United States and spawned Southern responses in literature that depicted slavery as a benign institution. Given the debate that Uncle Tom’s Cabin helped spawn, historians have viewed Stowe’s classic as a harbinger of the Civil War itself. A famous anecdote holds that Abraham Lincoln himself, upon meeting Stowe, described her as "the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war."
While that quote is likely apocryphal, the historical importance of Uncle Tom’s Cabin remains well understood today, but the book is also remembered today for certain depictions and stereotypes of black people. These stereotypes include the affable “mammy,” the "pickaninny" stereotype of black children; and, of course, an “Uncle Tom”, which has ironically become a pejorative for a person who suffers dutifully for his boss.

About the Author
Harriet Beecher Stowe was an American author and abolitionist. Born in Litchfield, Connecticut, she was raised in a deeply religious family and educated in a seminary school run by her elder sister. In her adult life, Stowe married biblical scholar and abolitionist Calvin Ellis Stowe, who would later go on to work as Harriet s literary agent, and the two participated in the Underground Railroad by providing temporary refuge for escaped slaves travelling to the American North. Shortly before the outbreak of the American Civil War, Stowe published her most famous work, Uncle Tom s Cabin, a stark and sympathetic depiction of the desperate lives of African American slaves. The book went on to see unprecedented sales, and informed American and European attitudes towards abolition. In the years leading up to her death, suffering from dementia or Alzheimer s disease, Stowe is said to have begun re-writing Uncle Tom s Cabin, almost word-for-word, believing that she was writing the original manuscript once again. Stowe died in July 1, 1896 at the age of eighty-five.

a redemption tale
By deha
"It was written in a simpler time (the Victorian age), when Lovers meant people who loved someone and desired to court them in a purely innocent way... This story is not a romance. It is a redemption tale, beginning with establishing relationships and dynamics between characters, it progresses through tragedy and unexpected character development, to the end when moral courage triumphs over romance. This is not a story that could be told today, when romance always triumphs, but it is far wiser than any mere romance. It is a tale of moral courage." April Sage

A gripping an enthralling tale.
By Alec Hawkes
This is another triumph for this talented English writer. The story is set in 1911 in pre-war England, in the beautiful North Yorkshire town of Whitby, and in it's smaller neighbour, the lovely village of Ruswarp. This is historical fiction, but based in actual places and on events that may well have happened. Ms. Voet writes very well, forming and developing her characters in such a way that the reader can become interested, then hooked. Captain James Hawkes could so easily be based on someone who really did exist so, for me, the story held much authenticity as his character and personality - so like that of a typical English gentleman of the time - and his story gently, drew me in. Without giving too much away, James had returned from duty with The Royal Navy to find the peace and equilibrium of life in his own beautiful corner of England had been not only disturbed, but turned upside down. What follows is an enthralling tale of jealousy, love lost and found, murder, and more. The author brings many interesting and varied characters into the story as the pace increases and the tension mounts. There are many twists and turns in this gripping tale, a tale that I would highly recommend.

A superbly written story!
By Amazon Customer
A superbly written story! You can't help but love Captain Hawkes, such a great character. The story steps back in time to the pretty little northern seaside town of Whitby and, an idyllic village on the outskirts, during 1911 and 1912. Much of it is centered around the old corn mill and the scandal created by the workers. You really feel like you are back there with the characters at that time, and in the thick of all their troubles, in particular with Captain Hawkes when his own brother constantly takes from him, including the love of his life Victoria. However, without giving the story away, the captain does get his own back, but be prepared, the story is far from predictable, with some surprising twists. This book is a real page turner! A very talented writer, which is why I give five stars to this wonderful book. Unfortunately, these days we don't see enough literary, and this is one of those hidden gems!

Review
ReviewIn Until My Name Is Known, the Almighty sets out to reveal Himself to mankind. He takes both the Egyptians and the Hebrews from "Who is this God, that I should obey?" to "Surely this is the finger of God!" The great I Am clearly unveils His character, but wisely allows each one to choose whether or not they will honor His supremacy. Reading this account helped me step out of modern America into Egypt, 2450 B.C. and brought the Biblical Exodus to life. I think you, like me, will be uniquely compelled to view God through the eyes of the story characters as they stand in awe of His mighty miracles, wonder at His patient persistence, and grapple with questions about fairness and faith. I want to thank the author for the privilege of reviewing her book--I enjoyed it enough that I chose to purchase my own copy rather than accept the complimentary reviewer's copy.Titania PorterFlorida

Review of Until My Name is Known by Sonya Contreras
God moves before all of humanity all of the time. Some acknowledge that fact; some do not. Read Until My Name Is Know to get a glimpse of the varied responses to the same events and the same God... and then ponder your response - and the implications of that response - to the same God today. I enjoyed the narrative woven from the biblical, historical, and archaeological gleanings. Even though I received nothing more than a free copy of this book to do this review, it was well worth my time to again be reminded that God's ways of doing things are not always correctly interpreted by us humans.  Uve Steinmann

From the Author
I desired to weave the biblical account with archaeological and historical records to tell the story of the Hebrew exodus from Egypt. The timing of the Exodus is essential to biblical chronology. Until recently, the wrong date was assigned. This wrong date kept archeology from substantiating the biblical record. Many scholars doubted the reliability of the Bible because the stories could not be proven.  If Egypt was destroyed by ten plagues, history should show it. If six million people wandered in the desert, archeology should demonstrate it, but it could not. People doubted the Bible.Dr. Gerald E. Aardsm'a date of 2450 BC. for the Exodus brings cohesiveness to the biblical and archeological accounts. No historian could explain why the Old Kingdom of Egypt disappeared without a trace. Aardsma's research answers why. Archaeologists found an unknown people wandering the desert during this time. The Exodus of the Israelites explains them. Aardsma's research gives answers. Several editors have corrected my capitalization of God and the pronouns for Him. According to the current standard, God's pronouns, (i.e. Who, His, He) and His body parts (i.e. hand, finger) should not be capitalized. When those words have referred to little gods, I honor that standard. But for the sake of respect for God, as well as clarity in the text, I have chosen to capitalize them regardless of the standard. I trust the reader was not overwhelmed by the 'mistake' of this choice. The Bible tells the story in Exodus 1-15. Read it for yourself and see God better through it.

From the Inside Flap
God moves before all of humanity all of the time. Some acknowledge that fact; some do not. Read Until My Name Is Know to get a glimpse of the varied responses to the same events and the same God... and then ponder your response - and the implications of that response - to the same God today. Even though I received nothing more than a free copy of this book to do this review, it was well worth my time to again be reminded that God's ways of doing things are not always correctly interpreted by us humans.  Uve SteinmannUntil My Name is Known gives a clear and compelling picture of God's movement in the Old Kingdom of Egypt with the return of Moses to Egypt as God's faithful messenger and servant. The story unfolds as Moses faces Pharaoh with God's instructions to " Let My people go!".The author gives readers insights into the lives and thoughts of both Egyptians and Hebrews as each of the richly drawn characters respond to God's power evidenced in the various plagues. Some struggle against the One True God and some find their faith in His love growing deeper.Every reader will find both comfort and challenges as the results of the plagues affect lives of individuals and the nation of Egypt. As we learn more about God, will we obey, or will we rebel? This question pervades the book -- and each of our lives.I have read scores of Christian fiction books and this is the first clear instance of God Himself being the main character of the work.If you are fascinated by history --- read it. If you want to spend hours experiencing life in Old Egypt--- read it. If you want to know more about the Holy God -- read it!!!I received no payment for this review except a free book ( which I will treasure).Michele Evans Fresno California

Gripping and providing a different view of Exodus
By S.F.
Reading, "Until My Name is Known" I was really impressed by the level of commitment Sonya has shown the Book of Exodus and although this is a fictional re-telling of what could have happen, the author shows a love and desire to bring to this book, research and a sense of authenticity to bring the readers into this re-telling of Moses, not from when he started out as a baby, but as an adult and facing a task that he felt at the time,he wasn't the right person.

Even at the end, there was an inclusion of a map, glossary, and amazing list of books to reference and throughout the story itself, I felt like Sonya really brought the story of Moses and the Exodus to life that toward the end, I found myself anxiously waiting for book two to see how she will continue this series.

The biggest thing to highlight is the fact Sonya shows respect to those who are familiar with Exodus and the story of Moses.

There are gentle nods throughout the book that makes this, even though its a fictional re-telling of the book of Exodus, a fictional story that is biblical sound.

"Until My Name is Known" is a captivating read and one quickly gets lost into the rounded out character development without the background either overpowering or getting lost in the story development.

Instead, there is a wonderful character development and even if you know the story of Moses by heart, this will not only bring a fresh outlook to this known biblical story.

The story changes smoothly. Character interactions are realistic for what could be expected and there are glimpses of both the love Sonya has for the story, but also for the characters as the story progresses to it's ending.

I couldn't help, but wonder, as the story concluded, if there was study guide that could go with this and even if there wasn't one, just transitioning from this to studying the Book of Exodus itself would make this a great addition for a personal or group bible/book study.

Sonya capture the time and the culture that "Until My Name is Known" and along with it, create that much love anticipation for the next book in the series.

This is a book that is well worth the time and investment to read once, maybe twice, or even more than several times.

Disappointing Read
By Marjorie Vawter
Until My Name Is Known by Sonya Contreras is a well-researched biblical fiction, retelling the story of Moses’s call to set God’s people free from slavery in Egypt. The events of this first book in a series covers the burning bush through the crossing of the Red Sea and the Egyptian nation’s destruction when the water closed over the army following the Israelites. While the story is historically accurate, I had trouble getting into it because of the author’s lack of sentence structure variation, which is an indication of telling rather than showing. Also, several times through the book, I questioned the choice of POV character. For example, instead of experiencing the burning bush through Moses’s eyes and ears, we read of it after the fact through Zipporah’s extreme bias against her husband’s God. Instead of making the characters come alive and be “real,” these POV choices in most cases made them wooden and static. Finally, as a Christian and a strong proponent of God’s Word and its importance in the life of the believer, I like to see a strong spiritual thread in fiction. But it needs to be such an integral part of the story that it flows naturally out of the characters themselves. I don’t need to be hit over the head with the “theme” over and over again. In Until My Name Is Known, the theme of God's name being known throughout the world is inherent in the biblical story and in Moses's life, so having it spelled out for the reader, even to the very end, is redundant and frankly insults the reader's intelligence. As a freelance editor who has worked for several traditional CBA publishers, I couldn't help noticing several technical issues with the typesetting, mostly with word breaks and capitalization choices that could easily have been avoided by checking with the industry-standard dictionary and style manuals. However, once I acknowledged these deterrents to reading the story for enjoyment, I was able to skim through the book, appreciating the author's research and how she wove it into a fictional account that is accurate to the Scripture and the time in history.

The Exodus story
By Carole Jarvis
Until My Name Is Known is a work of biblical fiction, spanning the time from the call of Moses at the burning bush to when the Israelites stand on the other side of the Red Sea. Sonya is passionate about retelling the Exodus story in a fresh way, through a variety of Egyptian and Hebrew characters, and showing God's faithfulness throughout. While it didn't quite pull me in as a work of fiction, there were parts that I did enjoy.

Sonya gives much attention to historical detail and the archeological influence adds a fresh touch. It was interesting to think what it might have been like to be the wife or mother of a firstborn son. Zipporah gives voice to man's questioning of God as she struggles with a God who would require such a mission from her husband. And then there's the age-old problem of pain and suffering, reflected in Aaron's question, "Will anyone seek God, if he doesn't know he needs God?"

One reminder of God's faithfulness is something that I haven't often thought about, and that's the carrying of Joseph's bones out of Egypt. "God heard the desire of a man and granted it four hundred and twenty years later. "

Several themes are woven through the framework of this book - that there is but one true God and He is more powerful than any god of man, the need to totally trust God - but the overarching theme is God's constant faithfulness. I need and welcome constant reminders of these aspects of God's nature.

The series continues with book #2, I Have Called You by Name. I believe that fans of biblical fiction rich in historical and archaeological detail would enjoy this book.

Thank you to Litfuse Publicity for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

An Incredible Story!
By SCeleB.
What a fantastic story!...filled with suspense, horror, romance, total surprises--it has everything. There are various characters, each with their own unique story and I was curious how they would fit together, it seemed impossible, if indeed they were to come together. The more you read, the more you have to know what is going to happen next and the pace of the story quickens and it's hard to put it down. There were quite a few shockers, totally unexpected, which took my breath away. Philosophy, mythology and tales of long ago are woven into the present day and heartbreaking nostalgia brought tears to my eyes. All I can do right now is sit and wonder, breathe and feel like I just finished an incredible journey...a truly breathtaking story.

This 19th-century classic, read by Andrew Sachs, is a tale of betrayal, gold, and love, encased in the elegant symmetrical structure so popular in traditional English fiction, featuring Marner, the weaver, who is framed for theft by his best friend and becomes a recluse, focusing his strong affections only on the store of golden coins he receives in payment for his work. As usual, Chivers has produced an excellent audio presentation of a literary masterpiece. Alas, in this day and age fewer and fewer readers not enrolled in literature classes actually read the works of what are frequently referred to as "dead white males" even if, as in this case, they were actually written by a woman. For this reason, this title is recommended for all academic but only larger public libraries.

Review
"I think Silas Marner holds a higher place than any of the author's works. It is more nearly a masterpiece; it has more of that simple, rounded, consummate aspect. . .which marks a classical work."—Henry James

A book for all times, but not for all readers
By Susan E. Hallander
Question: How can you ensure that a person will hate a book? Answer: Make her read it for 7th grade English class, make sure that the language is old-fashioned, and above all, make sure that the ideas and concepts are over her head. If that's what happened to you, and that's why you have an aversion to Silas Marner, and you are now over 30, pick it up again. Read it twice. Silas Marner is one of the greatest novels in the English language.
Yes, it starts out sad, as our pathetic hero looses both his trust in humanity and his faith in God. But the power of love replaces his lust for money, and wins out in the end. Meanwhile, morally poor but financially rich, high-living Godfrey Cass provides a counterpoint to simple Silas. At the end there's a surprise when the fate of Godfrey's evil brother is revealed.
When you're all done, before you file Silas Marner on the shelf, go back and read the paragraph about Silas' thoughts when he discovers that his hordes of coins are missing. If you have ever felt sudden extreme loss, you will recognize the stages of despair from disbelief to acceptance "like a man falling into dark water." Which is why this book is not suitable for children, and is most appreciated by those who have undergone their own moral redemption.
Silas has been the inspiration for many other characters, including Dicken's Scrooge. He has been portrayed in movies, including "A Simple Twist of Fate" starring Steve Martin. But none is as good as the original. If you haven't read it since junior high, try it again. Silas Marner is an excellent book. There's a gem of human understanding in every chapter.

A Tale of the Redeeming Power of Love
By R.J. Robledo
Silas Marner is an excellent classic novel set in early Nineteenth Century England. In this story, George Eliot (pen name for Mary Ann Evans) depicts a man named Silas Marner, a weaver by trade. He lives happily in his home town of Lantern Yard, until his best friend William Dane betrays him by setting him up as a thief. William then marries Silas' fiancée, and Silas is shunned from the town. He eventually settles in a very small cottage in Raveloe, where he spends his days making cloth and other materials for the townspeople. Due to his now secretive and reclusive ways, the people of Raveloe never really come to know Silas, and he lives in solitude, having turned away from his former faith and happiness.
But one winter's night, a small orphan girl comes to his house, and everything changes. Silas cares for the child (with the help of his neighbor, Mrs. Winthrop, whose family soon befriends him), and his heart begins to soften.
This is a very good representation of the redeeming power of love, and the consequences of a person's actions. For people who enjoy classic literature, this is definitely a must-read.

Pure gold
By Peter Reeve
If you have a heart, the story of Silas Marner will warm it. You are better coming to it fresh, without knowing anything of the simple yet solid plot, so I will say nothing of it. I will just urge you to read this wonderful book. Eliot writes beautifully and from page one, you realize you are in the hands of a true artist. This is a very human, very English story of simple people living through those very basic emotions that make the world turn and give the universe meaning.

Peter Wells discovers an old portrait in a Washington, D.C. antique store that he believes has not only been painted by John Singer Sargent, but the Victorian lady's delicate features so intrigue him that he offers to buy it. The antique dealer refuses to sell the painting until it's authenticated. Thus, Peter begins a quest to learn more about this breathtaking beauty. Is this the face of someone he recognizes? SARGENT’S LADY is a story of love, sacrifice, and survival from the late 1800’s - 1950’s throughout the United States and Europe. After a clandestine love affair in Paris, Maud Driscoll, a Boston debutante, finds herself alone and pregnant, only to learn the baby’s father has been murdered. As an aspiring young artist, Maud is forced by Victorian convention to relinquish her baby at birth. She continues studying and painting until the outbreak of the Great War when she returns to the United States. Several years later, Maud marries a prominent Boston scion but discovers her marriage a farce. Not wanting to face any public humiliation or gossip, she returns to Europe, this time to Italy. The subsequent years bring her worldwide fame through her artwork. She finds love and marries a baron. At the onset of WWII, the Nazis commandeer their home, destroying all the vineyards, and the winery. Maud and her husband, Giovanni, work as servants to survive the shattering onslaught. They stay alive, dreaming they can begin a new life in California. Post war, Maud’s life takes a dramatic turn. She finds her son and discovers he married the daughter of her best friend. The families unite in love and in common interests as they plant vineyards, and build a winery. Will history repeat itself?

About the Author
Judith Fabris is a native Californian, product of an all-girl high school, graduate of San Jose State University with a B.S. degree and also holds a law degree. She grew up in Glendale and Pasadena, California. Her professional career was in the securities industry and since brokerage firms didn’t send “girls” for training, she burned the midnight oil to study. When she originally received her brokerage license, she broke through the glass ceiling to become one of only 1,200 women in the United States to achieve that status. She passed and held all the necessary licenses to manage or own a brokerage firm. Along the way, she’s been a managing editor of two magazines, a stringer for “Copley News Service” and an article writer and columnist for numerous magazines. She holds a lifetime California Junior College Teaching credential for personal finance and business law. She began writing in earnest to introduce and educate people about the world of finance. When she retired from her day job, writing became an all consuming passion. She knew she wanted to write fiction, thus began the journey to research and write and historical romance, “Sargent’s Lady.” In her spare time, she volunteers, something she’s done all her life, with projects from the Junior League to PTA; from fundraising to live theater. She also served as a hospital lay chaplain. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, travel, a glass of good red wine, and most especially, the company of her wonderful family and friends.

Beautifully spun historical romance filled with suspense

Beautifully spun historical romance filled with suspense, love, drama, and intrigue spanning generations and the globe alike. I especially enjoyed the correspondences written back and forth throughout the book. I was sad when the story ended because I became caught up in Maud's journey in life. Judith Fabris: I await another book, you are a fabulous story teller!

Such a Joy!
By Mardiyah A Tarantino
Such a joy to sink into a true historical novel with all the flavor and color one hopes for ! The use of correspondence draws the reader into the personal space of the characters, and the time element keeps one on a constant journey from one period to the next, one country to another. Behind all this an unsolved mystery looms, Sargent's haunting portrait, the tie that binds the novel to the very end.

This book was a joy to read!
By Kim S
I absolutely loved this book. The author has done a great job taking us through the lives of two best friends with her fast paced, no nonsense writing style. I loved the beautiful attention to detail when describing everything from the clothing of the time to the landscapes. The twists and turns make this a hard book to put down. I'm a native southern Californian so I enjoyed her historical take on the growth of Los Angeles County too. This book was just a joy to read. I certainly look forward to reading many more books by Judith Fabris.
