Freedom Road is the third book in Dan Vanderburg's Texas Legacy Saga. It follows the Bowman and Jefferson families featured in Legacy of Dreams and Trail of Hope into the Civil War. Young Billy Jefferson, a free Negro since birth follows his and his family's dreams to become educated so he can start a school and teach others like himself. Those dreams are dashed as he is kidnapped, beaten into submission and sold into slavery in New Orleans on his way home from the University in Scotland. This story shows the Jefferson and Bowman families as they try to find their lost son and struggle with political strife as their country's union disintegrates. It also shows how two strong families, one white and one black, deal with prejudice and hatred because of their anti-slavery beliefs and Unionist leanings in a turbulent Confederate Texas.
About the Author
As a sixth generation Texan, Dan Vanderburg grew up learning how his ancestors worked to build their farms, ranches and way of life on the Texas frontier. Those accounts lit a spark in Dan as a youngster to learn more about the people that built Texas. Dan enjoys developing strong characters with their own exciting stories to tell and placing them and their stories in and around actual critical events in history. Dan lives and writes in Arlington, Texas.

Excellent Series

This series of books written by Dan takes you, in detail, back to the events in Texas history. Well written, easy read and wanting more as soon as I finished this latest. Thank you for an amazing journey with the families and their struggles in shaping Texas.
