A fascinating and little-known era of history comes to life

A fascinating and little-known era of history comes to life in this suspenseful and ambitious historical novel: a rogue attempt to purge Jews and false Christians from Toledo years before the Spanish Inquisition. Told through the eyes of a complex and conflicted character--Vicente, a powerful man with a shameful secret and a tortured conscience--the story travels from the war grounds of Castile to lush and glorious Naples to the very heart of Rome. Meticulously researched, the novel features a range of vibrant historical figures, including the notoriously power-hungry lawyer Marcos García de Mora, while introducing richly drawn secondary characters who add depth, heart and perspective. Webster's prose is lush and his pace quick, and while the essence of the story is a dark slice of history, the novel is also brimming with humorous moments, sharp dialogue, interesting twists and a sweet and moving romance. Ultimately, it's the best kind of historical fiction--smart, thought-provoking and suspenseful, with a story that stays with you long after you finish.

Webster's historical fiction novel of Toledo, Spain during the 15th century is an essential book written from a unique writer. Although his talent for detailed descriptions and ability to create suspenseful action are appreciated, I believe his overall approach of creating a love story in the middle of so much social and political warfare to be the true gem of this book.
We are certainly treated to a complex cast of characters that sustain our interest and keep us intrigued. Vicente, Garcia, and Francesca help illustrate the themes of human nature, morality, and religious dogma which is important in relation to the heavy handed context of the novel. Corrupt politics, theological extremism, and historically accurate persecution, provide the chaotic foreground that help illustrate the humanity of our characters. Without it, this would simply be a history textbook of the intolerant events taking place in Toledo prior to the Spanish Inquisition. Because of Webster's writing style, we are able to experience and learn about Toledo through the emotional, physical, and spiritual turmoil of our characters.
The graphic violence and uncomfortable scenes are necessary in order to adequately comprehend the gravity of this time period. Being fairly ignorant of European history during the Spanish Inquisition myself, I was left reflecting on current events and the state of the world today in regards to religious based indifference. It is rare for me to continue obsessing over a book well after reading it. This is a human story with historical events. It's not just the "Story of Toledo". Webster explores the definition of Toledo's soul.

Great book with fantastic story and attention to detail

What an engrossing book! Soul of Toledo by Edward D Webster is a great book set in the early 1400's, during great turmoil, religious persecution and deep seeded hatred. I couldn't put this book down once I started to read it. The history and storyline are woven together really nicely. I found myself shocked at the depth of discord between the people of different faiths during the time period. It is hard to fathom that kind of persecution in this day and age. Many Muslims and Jews were forced to convert to Christianity or be killed and yet were still persecuted going forward for not always having been Christian.
I really enjoyed reading Soul of Toledo, especially because the author does such an excellent job telling the story. It is so well written, I felt like I was watching the story unfold in my mind, like a movie. The characters are described with lots of details and the story is very well paced. I never felt like I was lost or didn't understand something. Also, at the end of the book is a list of translated terms so that you wouldn't be guessing. I didn't have to even refer to that section because the author did such a good job. I will be looking for more books that he was written.
I think this would be a great book for someone who enjoys reading about history, fiction or just wants to read a great book. Due to the nature of some of the themes of violence, I think this is probably for an adolescent reader or older.
