A Good Period Piece
By Rhea C. Varuna
I learned about this book one day while going through the 'ad pages' at the end of the free Kindle version of Grace Livingston Hill's book Marcia Schuyler. I thought it sounded interesting and I would give it a try.
I am very glad I did.
This book is set in Tennessee in the middle of the Civil War. Captain Baynell, a Union Army artillery captain with high standards for himself, happens one day to come into contact with the Roscoe family. Judge Roscoe, the head of the family, was a friend of Baynell's father when they were at school together and so he invites his friend's son to dine with the family one evening. During this dinner, Baynell meets Mrs. Leonora Gwynn, nee Roscoe, the Judge's niece.
Leonora is a widow, and was married to an abusive man who squandered her fortune and left her with nothing when he died. It's rather interesting to note that this book was published in 1905 and yet handle an abusive relationship in what I would consider a very modern way. The reader is given some insights in Leonora's mind as she recalls her past and wonders how she could have so blind to marry a man who abused her: "Who can gauge the sophistries, the extenuations [sic], the hopes, that delude a woman who clings to an ideal of her own tender fashioning, the dream of a fond heart, and the sacrifice of a loving young life. He left her not one vain imagining that she might still hold dear amidst the wreck of her existence" (Kindle Location 416).
She separates from her husband eventually, and he is killed while riding horseback one day, negating her need for a divorce. Leonora goes back to live with her Uncle and take care of his grandchildren and house for him, as the judge's wife has died and so has the children's mother. The children's father and uncle are away fighting for the Confederate side in the war. In this way she comes to meet Captain Baynell, and does not give him a thought beyond the politeness she is required to show to any guest who comes for dinner.
The captain falls ill shortly after he has dinner with the family, and the Judge, anxious to repay a favor that Baynell's father's family showed him when he was younger, has the captain brought to his home to allow him to recover there. During his recuperation, Baynell spends time around the family and starts to fall in love with Leonora. Meanwhile, Judge Roscoe's son Julius sneaks home for a visit, only to find that the family is housing a Federal officer who would most assuredly have Julius arrested should he be discovered. The Judge and Ephraim, one of the family servants, do their best to ensure that Julius is not discovered by the captain. One day, Baynell runs into Julius, and the two come to a brief altercation in which Julius escapes back to the Confederate lines with significant information that he gathered during his visit.
Baynell proposes to Leonora, who turns him down on the basis of never wanting to marry again after being miserable in her first marriage. The Captain eventually takes his leave of the family and resumes his potion in the war, that is, until Julius' information leads to a battle that goes poorly for the Union army. Looking for somewhere to pin the blame, higher ups in the army decide to court martial Captain Baynell on the grounds that he must have known that the Confederate soldier was housed at Judge Roscoe's and turned a blind eye to it on behalf of his friendship with the family.
The characters in the book seem well-developed, and the major players have sufficient depth to make them well rounded and interesting. the romance is there but mild, and does not overshadow any of the other plot threads in the book. The Civil War serves as a setting than a plot point, at least until the court martial at the end. Still, I found it to be a good period romance and recommend it to those who like mild romance stories.
I give it five stars.
