A well written good read

The book starts before the story begins with a quote from Anne Lammott, (one of the all time great contemporary writers) “Not forgiving is like drinking rat poison and then waiting for the rat to die.” This has piqued my interest.

The story opens with Calvin and 83-year-old arthritic man who is grieving over the loss of his wife, Mellie, and has had enough of living. He wants to join her. The doorbell rings and enters a lifelong friend, Edward White, who just received a phone call from Bethany, Calvin’s daughter. She is worried about her father’s state.

As the initial scene progresses reminders of Mellie enter into Calvin’s thoughts and the reader is taken in for this man. When something arises about Calvin not going to apologize this creates a tension and glue to the read, an air of conflict, and I am reminded of the Lammott quote. When The way this is written is so well done that I’m not put off buy the subject matter, instead I want to find out what’s behind that initial quote, is there more to happen to be forgiven, and who has suffered by not doing so.

Cole does not disappoint as he moves the storyline along with great descriptions and metaphors (“Edward rubs his hands on his jeans the way a politician does before shaking hands” etc.). He does not dwell on the struggle with end of life issues and loss of a spouse but brings the story alive, into the living albeit the past through his children, through himself, Edward, and poignantly Mellie, etc. This is an extremely well crafted sensitively authentic tale, that delves into what it is to be human and the human condition: the secrets, lies, reconciliations, and in the end choice and forgiveness. I certainly am coming away believing in the forgiveness.

Reminiscent of Nicholas Sparks’ The Notebook, I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed the read.

Complicated Family History

In the course of this book, I learned about the various members of the Greenwood family through their individual narratives.

The story begins at the end and moves through different points in time, providing the perspectives of the father, mother, children, and friends. Each adds a new bit of information and insight. Calvin, Emily, and the others are all fascinating and flawed. They argue and hurt each other and survive difficult times. Through it all is a kind of deep and unspoken love that becomes evident only when all else is lost.

The choice of multiple narrators and multiple times enriches the story. At the end, I felt I knew these people.

Beautifully crafted and developed. Highly recommended.

Ripples through time

Hoofbeats resonate through the first half of this book, as a family grow together amid the racing industry. The more modern dramas of the second half held less fascination for me, and sure enough the family are seen to fall away from one another.

An elderly man Calvin has nursed his beloved wife Mellie until her death, and now is at a loss, his day empty. A neighbouring man calls to check on him and their conversation takes a turn back to the old days. Naturally a bereaved husband recollects how he first met his wife, helping to ease a mare through foaling. We also see the story from the girl's point of view and successive instalments are taken up by other family voices. The times are hard and sulky racing can't pay the bills. With young children to feed, Calvin is forced to turn aside from the life he loves and earn in other ways.

We hear of jungle warfare dividing friends, college years providing new relationships and drugs affecting personal ambitions. Through the microcosm of this one family we follow the wider changing world. As the sibling stories spread ever further, Calvin and his Mellie find themselves once more the centre of each other's world. Can the love that united them overcome this new and final divide?

I found the different voices authentic and strong, the sense of time passing definite, with the modern neighbour's thoughts on coding and websites which just escape Calvin's understanding. Can one generation really understand another? Does the cycle of life keep turning in this dissociated yet web-connected era? You'll enjoy this wistfully romantic tale if you like thoughtful fiction based on characters and passing time, with plenty to learn and well-written horses.

Typical Dickens

I've been reading as many of Dickens' lesser known books as I can find. This one is typical of the Dickens theme of self-sacrifice and happy endings in a fairly short story, with all ends tied up. The title and the setting (a former battlefield) are not really relevant to the theme, other than Marion's inner conflict

THE STORY TELLING IS SUPERB!

When I was asked to read FORGOTTEN TALES OF CHINA by author Lisa April Smith I was expecting a suspense book from her like the great read EXCEEDING EXPECTAITIONS. What I read turned out to be a historical fiction about pre-historic China. Not something I would have normally agreed to read. I was sure glad that I did. I fell in love with this book. The characters jumped off the pages and I fell in love with them. The story telling is superb. We learn of the peopke that lived in caves and had to learn to hunt for food and even fire. They had a "mother" that taught them the old ways. She passed on her knowledge to a young girl, Berry with low ranking who turned out to be a great help to the tribe. My favorite story was of the man that came onto the tribes land looking for a place for him and his small group to stay. The men agreed to let the man his women and children from his group to stay on for a year to prove his worth and re-evaluate the decision. He brought with him the knowledge of fishing. Normally a woman would fish, but the stranger had an extensive knowledge to catch many fish and feed many people. He showed his worth above and beyond what the people expected. If you have a fondness for China and/or historical fiction I highly recommend this book. I really feel if you are a fan of Lisa's you would enjoy this. Like I previously stated this book would not have been a first choice pick to review, but I would have been wrong not to read this wonderfully written read.

Characters and Pre-Historic China Come Alive!

"Forgotten Tales of China" is a novel that will absolutely catch you up from the first chapter forward. It completely drew me in as I walked the plains with the leader of a pre-historic clan, hovered in a cave with a young girl who was learning her way to survival, and as other parts of the story of early China grew vivid and real before my inner eyes.

Lisa April Smith is not only an anthropologist by education, but she is one by nature and imagination. Her characters leap from the pages, coming alive with their thoughts and actions. I was particularly captivated and had an early allegiance to Berry, whose life depended upon her learning the art and craft of medicinal plants and herbs. And leaders such as Watchful Eye and other primary characters are most interesting and will grab your attention, too. Lisa is a master at characterization.

Yes, this book is very reminiscent of "Clan of the Cave Bear," but it stands alone in its own category and with its own laurels. The research behind the novel is more exact. The obvious work in reality scaffolds the story, creating a more believable world with more believable characters. And while this scholarship is quite evident, it is never boring or unreachable. Ms Smith's novel has an easy flow with a completely accessible, readable storyline.

I highly recommend this book to all those who love the exotic and the Orient, but also to those who are looking for a story that is unusual and absorbing. This is a book that will keep you transfixed for hours!

The Authors dedication to the accuracy and content of the stories serves to enhance and bring to life the background and people who are depicted and the rich historical content.

I also appreciated the Author's Notes at the end of each tale. They allow the reader to be privy to the Author's appreciation of the time in history and the thoughts and pertinent facts surrounding the tales as well as sources used for historical accuracy.

Each of the six tales in this book are written with such strength of character and the Author's appreciation of this time comes thru to the reader. The characters are very well defined as are the circumstances and lives they are living. Each one will get you fully involved with the characters, their lives and all the experiences they encounter.

I highly recommend this book for all readers. It is filled with history, drama and unbelievable situations.

Practical tips on having a vacation on a shoestring budget while being able to save

In these harsh economic times, many people find the going rough and it is almost impossible to save money and truly enjoy life. This book shows you how to calculate your net worth and make a budget so that you can improve yourself financially. Tips are given on how to make your personal savings plan, how you can travel during the holidays and save, and how to properly budget and save. I have learned a lot from this book and will be applying a lot of what I learned.

If you are struggling to save and live a relatively comfortable life despite the odds against you, I would recommend that you read the book, I found the advice to be practical and useful, so I think you will also benefit from it.

The large and small tips of advice really get you thinking. Complex and interesting universe!

This one can be a head scratcher for a bit until you get into the story and start to understand what is going on. If you are a fan of string theory or believe in alternate realities or reincarnation, this book is definitely something you’ll want to read. It tells a bit about the lives of 4 different main characters, who, at first seem completely different, until you start to notice the parallels in their lives and worlds.
There is Richard, who is a prince, Charles, who is a boy learning a trade, Vicky, who goes to boarding school, and a being that has no arms, legs, or wings. They are each going through similar experiences in their lives and are becoming more human because of their connection to one another. Although this is the beginning of the story, it doesn’t end with a terrible cliffhanger, but it does leave you wanting to read more. I would recommend this book to fans of science fiction novels.

Intriguing story idea

Paralysis Paradox by Stewart Sander is the first book in the Paradox Consecution series. In Paralysis Paradox you follow one soul through 4 lives. The first, the life of a prince name Richard in 1168. The second, the life of a young boy named Charlie in 1911 who loses people he loves. The third, a teenage girl named Vicki in 1996 who lives with an indulgent father. And the fourth, the same consciousness trapped in a weaponized machine named Gamma during some future time. Paralysis Paradox addresses the idea of reincarnation instead of heaven and hell. The difference being that the people in this book can remember their previous lives and live all of the lives at the same time. We begin by meeting Gamma after this sentient machine has destroyed a machine named Alpha during an argument. Through the book we learn that Richard has dreams of each of his other life times and eventually realizes that these dreams are not just visions but other lives that he is living. This short story is extremely well written and very interesting in the way it puts together the storyline. I like how it jumps from time period to time period but somehow still seems linear. I like how Gamma jumps in periodically to add a sense of mystery. And I like how all of the characters’ lives are related in some way. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Very Unique Plot!

I can honestly say that I have never read a book like the Paralysis Paradox of the Paradox Consecution Series. The plot of the book revolves around four individuals who all live within different time periods, within different social and financial classes that create a variance in the characters. Each individual faces hard decisions and experiences that either makes or breaks them and then overlaps into the other characters that are in their own time period. It is very hard to explain the book, but it reminds me a bit of the movie Inception, where there are events occurring within other events and everything is tied together. When you read this book, you need to pay attention because it is not a fluff novel that can be easily breezed through. Paralysis Paradox requires critical thinking so as to make connections between the characters and see what is impacted by what events, but you will not regret reading this book because the plot is unlike so many other generic novels out on the market.

SO fun that I didn't have to fake my O...

I quit reading romance b/c the books followed a predictable formula. So when I find a writer that wakens my romantic soul, it is truly a NEW experience.

I got hooked when reading a couple of the later pages and was caught up in wondering what came next. YEP! NOT predictable. AND multilayered. I HAD to start from the beginning and enjoy every page. So much to enjoy... like Belle doesn't hand her intelligence away the moment she receives her first kiss. Other aspects? The fact that the bad people are just like the bad people we know in real life. It's not illogical which is what we see on tv. (TV example: the sociopath that is cured by true love (which is crazy in real life and young girls are given such messages and have to learn the hard way that it's BS). Nope, the bad guy gets away with being bad... and I won't tell what happens b/c that could spoil your fun. That's another thing I liked, this book was FUN. When I got to the end, I realized I had FUN reading. It's been quite a while when I felt that after reading a book! I loved relating to the trials of the heroine and LOVED LOVED LOVED that it was impossible for me to guess the ending. I can hardly wait for the next book by Emily Klein. She's an intelligent woman writing a smart romance. SO glad this new writer is truly a NEW writer!

A charming, easy-to-read romance

I was delighted by Annabelle because she cast off the gender roles of a medieval society and followed her passion for math and drafting. I feel that Klein's interpretation of a free spirited woman in medieval society is realistic and engaging. I was impressed by Klein's ability to convey that Annabelle's devotion to math and science was taboo in medieval times by relating the assumptions that most of the male characters in the book made about Annabelle.

I enjoyed the political intrigue that is part of the sub-plot. I felt that this was planned out very well, and it seems accurate for the setting. Some aspects of the romantic plot have a Shakespearean feel to them, but they conflicted with the elements that were more contemporary. In medieval times, it was highly unusual for a couple to be matched for love, especially when there were several matches available that would grant the family more political power, or a higher social standing. I feel that this made the romantic plot more fantastical rather than realistic.

Overall, The Draughtsman Damsel by Emily Klein is a charming romance that is not graphic or bordering on erotica. If you enjoy light medieval-style romances with a bit of political intrigue, I suggest that you give this book a try.

Historical romance is not typically my favorite genre, but Ms. Klein has managed to make historical romance engaging in this delightful little book. She develops her characters very well and sets them in the England and France of the Middle Ages. Her love of colloquial English makes the story more believable, and one finds oneself rooting for the heroine and having mixed feelings about her main love interest who loves her, yet seems a bit obtuse which complicates the plot further. While there is some sexual content, it is in no way explicit, and I would say that this book would be appropriate for adolescents age 13 and above. If you like a good story about the complicated life of noble-born girl growing into a woman with all the complications that this tricky stage of life is timeless, then this book is for you.

I love this writer's intricate, detailed style and the complex world he explores in these novels. The characters of Yates and Sharp are distinct, interesting and well-drawn and I enjoyed reading the interplay between them in this fourth novel in the series, where they ascend Mount Dolymtiud. The story in this book is complete, but the wider story goes on, and I'll be reading the fifth book when it comes out to find out what happens to Yates.

Great addition to the series. Very well described landscapes help define each new realm and its occupants. These stories may seem drawn out at first, but this has a way of making the reader emotionally invested in the outcome of each accomplishment and trial. I will continue to follow this story and author.

A personal story about the Hungarian revolution and its aftermath. The author, of Hungarian descent, fills in many details sometimes lost in the historical record. Could use better editing, but overall a touching story about an important era and a pleasant read.

Bully Route Home by DJ Havlin is a coming of age story. It follows Robert William Robertson, aka “Pooch,” as he learns some of the hard lessons of life including racism, standing up for what’s right and learning how to handle different situations. As he does tasks that seem mundane such as taking a catfish off a hook, he is taught valuable life lessons. The story focuses on the effects of racism on a small town in a time where hatred ran rampant. As Pooch tries to avoid a beating from the bully, he inadvertently creates chaos within the town. He finds a new friend in Carver, a black boy from the “quarters”, and in turn Pooch’s father hires Carver’s father as a supervisor much to the dismay of the town. The after effects of Lee’s decision effects not only Lee and the plant but also the children at school. Havlin provides an honest and uncensored look at the negative aspect of the human species.

Pooch is a young man full of innocence and naivety. His opinion of a person doesn’t stop at the color of his skin. This viewpoint within a young child and his father spark a rebellion within the town. While Pooch is learning lessons of life and growing up faster than he should, readers are learning as well. This is a book that will cause readers to think. The book is beautifully written and addresses a subject that too often we are afraid to address. While the novel uses certain language, it is done tastefully and in a manner that portrays the viewpoint and culture of the time being depicted.

The characters are complex and grow with depth as the book progresses. Pooch is an incredibly strong character with strong moral values. He doesn’t intend to spark change when he befriends Carver, it just inevitably happens. Throughout the town struggle we see the harsh reality of hatred. Havlin portrays this marvelously through not only dialogue, but the action of the towns folk. I found myself worrying about the Williams family and hoped to have seen more of Carver throughout the hardships. I enjoyed Rebecca’s character as well. While we seen the negativity of human character through many characters, we also see innocence and purity in Rebecca, even when she wants to fight those who challenge her. Lee Robertson is another strong character supporting his son, and displaying the beliefs and actions he wants him (Pooch) to learn. He risks everything to do the right thing and doesn’t back down in the face of adversity. He wants Pooch to learn to the same values and while he seems a strict parent, he does what he thinks is best for all his children. He reminds me a lot of Atticus Finch, fighting for what is right and enduring the aftermath of his decisions.

Havlin’s descriptions are elegant and on point, he doesn’t spend too much time with fluff. His words are direct and to the point. He knows exactly the right words to say in order to expertly evoke emotions from his readers. I cannot begin to say how times I wanted to cry or gasp out of surprise. There were other times when my heart just sank at the actions of one human towards another. DJ Havlin takes one of the dark shadows on our history and brings it to life, brings it to reality. We all heard the stories in school; DJ Havlin’s novel makes it all too real. He doesn’t shy away from the horrors one group of people caused another. It became a story something different from what I was expecting. This is definitely a book that needs to be read just as much as Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer or Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird.

This book is well written and a look back at a time in American history many do not know. I found the characters well developed and sympathetic to the delema Pouch had. I'm a fan of this author and all his books. The bully route home was exceptional.

¡Don José siempre tan solo!

Buena lectura con la puntuación y estilo característico de Saramago. Solo un escritor de este calibre puede hacer de una historia de un hombre solo y patético un rato entretenido. Sinceramente a ratos me aburrió, pero me engachó lo suficiente para seguir leyendo esperando la redención para Don José. No es una historia de amor, como lo anunciaba la portada, es la historia de un hombre triste y terriblemente solo.

No el mejor libro

Debo señar que la imaginación de Saramago siempre me maravilla. Aunque, en este caso, el libro me resultó bastante lento, Tal vez sea porque el proyecto que el protagonista se propuso llevar a cabo me pareció poco realista, y la narración me pareció más llena de material filosófico -- que es bienvenido pero poco atractivo. Me encantó la referencia al hilo de Ariadna, y me molestó el uso de dos preposiciiones seguidas que utiliza la traductora al español. Además, hay una técnica de pasar de narrador a protagonista en diálogos, sin identificación de personajes... un atractivo de Saramago.
