The one to get.
By Christopher (o.d.c.)
This book was a sensation when it appeared in Germany in 1774. This e-book is based on Goethe's revision of 1787. It contains parts one and two, with some good illustrations in the back: portraits of "the real Charlotte," of Goethe as a young man, and some of the popular illustrations for the bestselling 18th Century edition.

Of course I read this book long ago, about the age of Werther, or Goethe himself when he wrote this impassioned (Leiden = passions, sufferings) epistolary novel. Reading it today, when my own Sturm und Drang period is well behind me, it was harder to sympathize with Werther, and easier to see his "love" as neurotic- infantile, narcissistic, what have you. Werther seems to feed on its very hopelessness.

Goethe used Werther to exorcise his own young self (the book is clearly autobiographical)- he could simultaneously be the young letter writer, and look down, or back, at him.

Here is a sample of the German:

"... Die Kutsche fuhr vorbei, und eine Träne stand mir im Auge. Ich sah ihr nach und sah Lottens Kopfputz sich zum Schlage herauslehnen, und sie wandte sich um zu sehen, ach! Nach mir? - Lieber! In dieser Ungewissheit schwebe ich; das ist mein Trost: vielleicht hat sie sich nach mir umgesehen! Vielleicht! - Gute Nacht! O, was ich ein Kind bin!

Am 10. Julius

Goethe's Masterpiece
By A Customer
Although this was one of Goethe's earliest works, it is quite possibly his greatest. It allows the reader to experience the ups and downs of the irrational main character as he falls blindly and passionately in love with a married woman. Werther is the most passionate character ever created in literature, becoming possessed by nature, love, and himself. Although he sees his own destruction coming, he can and will do nothing to stop it. The first book is mostly autobiographical, based on Goethe's love for Charlotte Buff. Book two is a mor ebiographical account of one of Goethe's acquaintances. The story is truly captivating and emotionally draining. The language, in the English and even more so in the German, is powerful and fits perfectly to the overall mood of the story. There is beautiful imagery and the role of nature is carefully portrayed. This book should be read by all.

An incisive critique of bourgeois vices
By Peter Capofreddi
In the Enlightenment attempt to justify the institutions of bourgeois liberalism, one of the most glaring failures is the case of punishment. The Enlightenment can prove that a certain kind of peace is possible among those who accept its peculiar form of bourgeois reason. But the cruel treatment of dissenters who are either unable or unwilling to accept this sort of rationality—for this the Enlightenment has no justification. In a conversation with his bourgeois rival Albert, Werther brings up this unpaid debt of the Enlightenment. What should we say about a thief who steals to feed his starving children? Who would cast the first stone at him?

A man overcome with passion, says Albert, loses his senses, as if he were drunk or insane. Rational, reasonable bourgeois people like Albert designate the dissenter who refuses to accept their form of rationality as an outsider, who, because of his so-called irrationality is unworthy of sympathy. The cold-blooded cruelty of the bourgeois regime is rationalized by precisely such dehumanization of its victims.

The fundamental principle of the Enlightenment, as Kant would articulate it, is that each individual mind must overcome its self-imposed immaturity and learn to think without guidance from another. While the middle class of the eighteenth century were proud that the philosophical representatives of their age had overcome the superstitions of earlier ages and emerged from their state of self-imposed immaturity, individual bourgeois minds were by no means prepared to make this emergence themselves.

Werther is frustrated because he speaks “from his whole heart,” while Albert only replies with “meaningless platitudes.” Albert can’t be forced to think about who will cast the first stone at the poor thief, because public institutions, which feel no mercy, are perfectly willing to cast the stone on his behalf. Albert isn’t forced to think. Therefore, he doesn’t want to think. To this end, he has at his disposal many rough and ready phrases that can defuse such uncomfortable questions without demanding even the slightest glimmer of sincere thought. The bourgeois mind remains in its own peculiar state of self-imposed immaturity, in which phrases prepared in advance under the guidance of others can be assembled without guidance from others, but individual words cannot.

We might draw an analogy between Werther’s frustrated attempts to draw Albert into a sincere debate about bourgeois morality and Socrates’ frustrated attempts to embroil his conversation partners in serious philosophical debates. Under no circumstance does Albert want to think for himself. All Werther’s attempts are therefore useless.

The foremost reasons the majority of minds insist on remaining immature, according to Kant, are indolence and cowardice. Middle class functionaries like Albert call themselves “reasonable people,” but the reason they use isn’t Kant’s reason, which can think without direction from another, but a fraudulent bourgeois form of reason that consists of no more than meaningless platitudes—platitudes that seek to legitimize and rationalize precisely the indolence and cowardice Kant so detests.

Werther draws an analogy between the coldhearted reason of the middle class and the coldhearted legalism of the Pharisees. The indolence and cowardice of the middle class, just like that of the Pharisees, consists in this—they aren’t ruled by themselves, but rather by a faceless, cold-blooded and formalistic legalism. Werther explains the mistake of the middle class with a parable. A horse is impatient to do something. So he lets himself be saddled. Later, as his owner rides him to death, he regrets his decision. As I interpret the parable, the horse represents the conscience of the bourgeois. The owner represents things the bourgeois respects like money, reputation and law. In exchange for a comfortable salary, a bourgeois functionary like Albert sacrifices the authority to think for himself. From now on he must accept arguments, no matter how illogical, when they come from his superiors. The bourgeois can therefore no longer be a philosopher. It’s useless to try to change his mind, because his mind no longer belongs to him—and, as Werther explains, “When we lack ourselves, we lack everything.”

Werther elucidates the mistake of the middle class not only parabolically, but also explicitly. “A man who works at another’s will, not for his own passion or his own need, but for money or honor, is always a fool.” The bourgeois is so eager to obtain the money and honor that allow him to rule his subordinates, in exchange he makes himself into a servile subordinate. Werther, on the other hand, loves his freedom and independence. Under no circumstance will he submit to the will of a superior whom he doesn’t recognize as a better, more virtuous man.

In a 1992 essay, J. M. Coetzee describes Erasmus’s technique for offering philosophical critiques of contemporary society in fiction. According to Coetzee, Erasmus deliberately puts his cutting critiques in the mouth of a character intended to be perceived as a fool. He does this in order to present contentious ideas as uncontentiously as possible, taking them, as Coetzee says, “off the stage of political rivalry.” This is a way of presenting a statement that, politically speaking, must be false, because it is utterly incompatible with the way society is organized, and yet at the same time, in other important senses, is very true.

We know, for example, that the nominally adult bourgeois chases money, and the sensory pleasures it procures, with the same eager avidity of a boy awaiting cookies and cakes. But we would really prefer not to be reminded of this. Goethe wants to remind his bourgeois readers that we’re all servile cowards, without prompting us to slam the book shut in indignation, and thus lose the opportunity to hear all Goethe’s other biting criticisms of bourgeois life. He therefore puts his criticisms in the mouth of a character prone to hyperemotionality, sentimentality and exaggeration.

By putting his criticisms in the mouth of the emotionally fragile Werther, Goethe gives his readers what we might call a "time-release capsule of thought." Because Werther is so emotional and sentimental, we dismiss his criticisms as absurd when we first hear them. But, at the same time, they’re expressed so eloquently that we’re unlikely to forget them. We recall them later when we ourselves are exasperated with bourgeois life, and in the mood to listen to criticisms.

After his graduation, he became editor of the Army and Navy Journal. He resigned from the navy to pursue a writing career. A Fascinating Forgotten History of St Louis
By Vox Locus
A friend tumbled onto this book thinking it was a very early effort by THE Winston S. Churchill.

He was well into it, wondering about its very different than "Winnie's" style, when he did a bid of research and found the author to be a different Churchill, an American.

This is very much a period piece, and describes times and attitudes of the very early Civil War. Racial attitudes were different, and there's been no expurgation of words you'll hear in rap music, but not polite use.

The book is based on fact. My wife, who grew up in St Louis, in the German American community descended from people in the book, a community with St Louis roots in her family back to 1840. She was fascinated. The place descriptions are accurate. And it turns out one of the "heroes" in the novelization was an ancestor.

Certainly worth a try, especially at the price (free!)

Excellent insight of America's beginnings
By Agustina Milutinovic
Was very interested in the love story between Virginia Carvel and Syephen Brice and how both deny their feelings due to political differences.
Also it shows a different point of view of Abraham Lincoln in his beginnings before becoming the Presidente of the United States.
It was a good book overall, enjoyed it

Soldier of Rome - The Sacrovir Revolt: Book Two of the Artorian Chronicles, by James Mace

It has been three years since the wars against Arminius and the Cherusci. Gaius Silius, legate of the 20th Legion, is concerned that the barbarians - though shattered by the war - may be stirring once again. He also seeks to confirm the rumors regarding Arminius' death. What Silius does not realize is that there is a new threat to the empire, but it does not come from beyond the frontier; it is coming from within, where a disenchanted nobleman looks to sow the seeds of rebellion in Gaul.

Legionary Artorius has greatly matured during his five years in the legions. He has become stronger in mind, his body growing even more powerful. Like the rest of the legion, he is unaware of the shadow growing well within the empire's borders, where a disaffected nobleman seeks to betray Emperor Tiberius. A shadow looms, one that looks to envelope the province of Gaul as well as the Rhine legions. The year is AD 20.

Roman soldiers as humans...
By Alan L. Turner
I was very happy with the second Soldier of Rome installment. The Author has created a historic but human look at Roman soldiers and their world. He tells the story of men, young and old that face many of the same challenges that our service men around the world face now. Protect your brother on either shoulder in the heat of battle. In the first book, (I'm told a second edition has corrected the gramatical errors that went largely unnoticed in the first edition) large scale battles and mayhem kept me turning pages. In the second book of the series we learn more about the day to day life and politics of the Legion. Still plenty of action, but character development fills out the individual soldiers of the Twentieth. I look forward to the next book, (coming out soon I hear!) not only see the saga continued but to appreciate the growth of an outstanding young Author. I highly recommend these books.

As good as the first!
By Amazon Customer
I was pleasantly surprised to see that James Mace had done a follow-up to his previous book, "Soldier of Rome: The Legionary." Like most people I had never even heard of the rebellion of Sacrovir and Florus, so it came as another surprise to see that this book too is based on actual events. Most historical novels from this era seem to focus on Julius Caesar, or events in Britain (i.e. Boudicca's rebellion). These topics have been done to death, so I'm glad to see this author pursuing other historical events that most of us probably have never heard of before. Just because a war doesn't have a hundred different books written about it doesn't make it any less brutal or tragic to those who had to take part in it. The events surrounding the sons of the Gallic nobility is especially devastating.

One thing about this book is that it does not have as many large-scale battles as the first book. In my opinion this is a good thing, because now we are able to see more character development rather than just bouncing from one blood-bath to the next. And while the characters do grow and mature, I had to be reminded periodically that Artorius is still pretty young in this book (twenty-two, I think). The "Legion Champion" tournament could have been given some more detail, but it was still a nice addition to the story.

Overall I am glad to see Mr. Mace has elected to continue the story of Artorius and his fellow legionaries. While "The Legionary" could very well have been a stand-alone book had he elected not to write a sequel, "The Sacrovir Revolt" makes it plain that there will be more books to follow as it does leave the reader hanging a little bit at the end. I look forward to the next one.

Great Roman Historical Fiction
By Thomas D. Dunne
I have read the first book and really enjoyed it. The characters sound like real soldiers. James Mace, the author, is a soldier himself so he really knows how to write for soldiers. I would highly recommend this book for lovers of Historical fiction in Roman times. I have read a lot of different authors and it was great to find James Mace on Amazon. Look forward to the next book.

Ruby's Prayer, by Ronald Keyser

The years following the American Civil War propelled the great state of Texas into a bold future through a rush of expansionism. Much of this industrious activity was made possible by the ever-increasing reach of the railroads and, in Texas, great stretches of track were laid down and paid for with the lives of prisoners having little hope of ever escaping the state penal system. Ruby's Prayer is the story of the Texas-based Wallace family during the spring of 1880. The family is recovering from the wounds of the Civil War, including the loss of their mother, son Tom Wallace’s inhuman incarceration, and sibling rivalries and double-dealings, all while enmeshed in the intrigues of political, monetary and personal ambitions. Full of colorful characters both likable and despicable, Ruby’s Prayer reveals the hopes, loves and trials of an American family struggling to find their way during the tumultuous emergence of the Industrial Age and the final days of the Wild West.

Review

''Ruby's Prayer is an excellent story about a young man and his family's struggles in the closing days of the wild west. This historical fiction is an accurate portrayal of convict life in the Texas prison system, the importance and greed of the railroads at the time, and provides a bird's eye view of what everyday life was like in 1880s Texas.

The plot is wide and envelops second chances, family, sacrifices, hardships, and a drive to fulfill a dying mother's wish for the family she leaves behind. Full of excitement, drama and romance, this book is very well done, highly recommended and hard to put down!'' --Joe Newcomb, CEO Truth Entertainment, Executive Producer, Dallas Buyers Club

''Ronald Keyser writes in a no-nonsense style that keeps me turning pages, and his descriptive paragraphs are marvelous. You'll enjoy the book.'' --Keith Bridwell, Publisher, The Bridgeport Index

About the Author

Ronald Keyser was born in Marshall, Texas on September 24th, 1957. By the time he was eleven years old, his family had moved to several different cities, including Tyler, College Station, Dallas, Overland Park, Kansas, Richardson, Austin, San Antonio and finally Houston. His father was a debit agent in the insurance business and did an amazing job of supporting a family by himself, but his quest to make more money dragged their family around the state of Texas for a number of years.

He started writing at a late age. Like most people, Ron believed he could write a book, but it would never have happened if it wasn't for Lori. At its core, Ruby's Prayer is the story of what he and his wife went through to finally be together. When he told her he had the idea bouncing around in his head, Lori told Ron he should write it down. From that day forward, they dove into the project full speed.

Ruby's Prayer is a history lesson and an exciting love story, adventure all rolled into one
By John Scott Reeves
I read this novel in two nights over the weekend. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. Ruby's Prayer is a history lesson and an exciting love story, adventure all rolled into one. The rivalry between the brothers is engrossing. The abuses of the prison system are true and sad. Great characters-fully developed. The story moves along quickly and for me the ending was surprising. I love reading Texas novels and the style reminds me of the writings of Stephen Harrigan and Bud Shrake. Ronald Keyser has done a great job writing his first book. I look forward to his future works. I'd love to see a sequel!

Compelling Historical Fiction Don't Miss it!
By Bookreader
The Constable’s Tale is a compelling and meticulously crafted historical fiction novel. Donald Smith crafts this eighteen-century story with numerous sharp and authentic details. I felt as if I was living during the 1700’s in early America instead of just reading about it.

Harry Woodyard, the Constable of Craven County in North Carolina, was troubled by the fact that the Indian, Comet Elijah, was the prime suspect in the murder of a local family, and jailed. Harry believed that the Indian, who had mentored him as a child, couldn’t possibly have had anything to do with such brutality. To track down the killer, though, Harry knew that he would have to leave Craven County without the judge’s consent. The consequences, of taking such an action, would probably cost him his position as Constable. He was also aware that proving Comet Elijah’s innocence could take months, which was something that the elderly Indian just didn’t have.

Harry left Craven County and his wife on what he hoped would not end up being just a wild goose chase. The clues led Harry to travel to Virginia first, Boston second, and then finally up to Quebec Canada where the French and Indian War was in full force.

The Constable’s Tale is a story of political intrigue, espionage, and war, as well as a story of love, betrayal and a bit of romance. The dialogue and characters in this book are both realistic and engaging. There wasn’t a boring page in the entire novel. I highly recommend reading The Constable’s Tale.

I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.

Entertaining Historical Fiction
By Maxine McLister
It is the year 1759 and there has been a multiple murder on a plantation in Craven County, North Carolina. A small boy and his parents were slain, then posed, but the baby was spared. Pretty much everyone is convinced it must have been an Indian attack, everyone but Royal Constable James Henry Woodyard who is not so sure. When his friend and mentor Comet Elijah, a member of the Tuscorora tribe, is found in the vicinity of the crime, he is arrested. Woodyard is convinced he is innocent. He has found a medal with a Masonic crest on it and is sure it must belong to the real perpetrator of the crime. He sets out on a long and perilous journey to prove Elijah's innocence across several of the American colonies and north to Quebec into the camps of both Generals Montcalm and Wolfe and eventually into the middle of the battle that would decide the fate of a nation on the Plains of Abraham.

The Constable's Tale, the debut novel by author Donald Smith, is a fascinating combination of historical details about a period of history that is rarely seen in fiction and a cracking good mystery. Harry is a very likeable character, smart, just, curious but tough, and a mean hand with a tomahawk, one of the many skills he learned from Elijah when he was a boy. He is a small plantation owner and volunteer constable but is endeavouring to raise his status. Each chapter is headed by a quote from a book called Rules of Civility & Decent Behaviour In Company and Conversation, `[R]ooted in some ancient Italian court, later written out by an elderly Frenchman...translated into English' (a real book, by the way)which Henry had had to learn as a boy and which he tries to live by. He doesn't always do the right thing but he tries.

Smith manages to keep the details of colonial life and the dialogue true to the period while moving the story along at a galloping pace. Definitely a very enjoyable read, full of interesting history, characters, and plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader's attention throughout.

A excellent piece of Historical Fiction!
By Raven
The Constable’s Tale by Donald Smith

New Bern, North Carolina, early 1700’s, around the time of the French and Indian War.

A man looking to open a Tinsmith’s shop in the town of New Bern in the North Carolina Colony happens upon a murder as he nears the town.
At the small plantation of the Campbell family, Edward Campbell, his wife Anne, their adopted son Andrew, lie murdered; the bodies posed afterwards. Oddly enough the Campbell’s infant child is left alive.

Craven County Royal Constable James Henry Woodyard is in charge of the investigation. At first glance, the culprit or culprits appear to have been Native American. But the good Constable finds an expensive-looking Masonic medal and a map of Pamlico Sound under the baby’s crib. Now, he is not so sure it was a Native American.

Meanwhile an old Native American named Comet Elijah, who had help raise Woodyard, is discovered near the town and arrested for the murder. Woodyard cannot believe his old friend is guilty. He receives permission to pursue the Masonic Medal and leaves for Williamsburg, Virginia Colony to visit metal smiths.

Eventually the search for the owner of the Masonic Medal will send Constable Woodyard on a long chase and involves matters that could threaten Colonial America. The action is quick paced and smooth as the venue changes from New Bern to Williamsburg to Philadelphia to Boston and on to the front battle lines in Quebec. There are dangers and strange encounters along the way. And an extra twist at the end that is nothing short of a Masterpiece!

This was my first adventure with Constable Woodyard but I sincerely hope it won’t be the last. Mr. Donald Smith, my hat is off to you, Sir!

Definitely five stars out of five!

An underhand rector deserves two hand applause
By Franklana
Back when lords were able to gift, sell, or bestow the position of a rector, it was a privileged position rather than a religious one. Aside from the prestige and power, came a house, and salary/annuity for life.

A gentleman of no means is unexpectedly granted a rector, until everyone in his new parish suspects him of appropriating the privilege due to someone else. So forth continues the story with many involutions, as everyone is expecting the other shoe to drop, that is-except the unsuspecting rector who is confounded by how difficult it is to win over his parish. True Weyman style, the tension is broken up with excellent character studies, the virtues of honor during that period, and the lifestyle of a small country village. However, it is a breakaway from his swashbuckling adventurer storyline I am familiar with.

And the ending is rather a surprise.

Enjoy!

Thoroughly enjoyable old-fashioned story
By J. Falcon
This book was written many, many years ago. The writing style was definitely not a current style. The writing made me think-translating in my head from the old-fashioned style to a more contemporary and current style. I enjoyed the story immensely. It was very entertaining. I also learned about the placement of the Vicars and their sponsorship by the local Lords. I have downloaded other books by this author and plan on some future enjoyment of them.

Story not up to Weyman's normal standard of writing.
By Leia Sulee
Though well written as other Weyman writings read, "The New Rector" was drudgery. Simply put took half the book to finally get involved in the story enough to complete the reading. Picked up read a few lines then put aside to eventually go back to again try to read more only to put it down again; time and time again. The story though sweet and good was just not up to Weyman's standards.
