My Fair Groom

When I started this book, I thought it was a "GROOM" as in Bride and Groom. In fact it referred to one who grooms or takes care of the horses in a stable.
This story is written in old english style. I enjoyed this so much because I routinely switch between reading books for fun and classics. Some of the classics are favorites of mine because they challenge my thinking. This story used terms I was not familiar with and I looked each one up as I was going so I got every thing out of the story I should. This may sound like work to some, but you can enjoy the story without doing that, that part was for my own enrichment.
This was a beautiful love story. The characters touched me and I found myself very involved with them. It is fun to escape to a simpler time in life. What would it be like to dress in fancy dresses, take a horse and carriage every where? Even in these times, there was still love, regret, jealousy, etc. So long ago, so many things different, yet so many the same. In the end, we all want that one true love and to live a happy life.
I enjoyed this story very much and look forward to reading more of Linda's books.

I'm a real picky reader when it comes to my books. This one captured my attention from beginning to end. I don't normally read these type books, so for it to capture me the way it did, speaks very highly of it. I also loved the other two books of the trilogy. Will be willing to read this over and over again.

Linda Rae Sande sure put it all out in the last book of this series. So hard to put down stayed up til 4am reading could not stop. I just had to know what was going to happen next. I love stories like the ones in this series and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND them to you. Happy reading.

Appealing Heroine Highlights Adventure Story

The Airship is the highly-enjoyable second book in the Steam World series by this author. The vaunted Steampunk Carnival featured in Book One proves the jumping-off point for Samuel Langley's creation of the unique, massive airship preparing to make its maiden, transatlantic voyage from the US to France. There is a diverse cast of characters boarding the airship as is to be expected, but the focus is on Amelia Harlow, a young woman who makes the journey for a singular reason: she plans to steal something from one of the passengers. Convicted, recently-released murderess Elizabeth Cole and her lover Lewis possess the item Amelia must steal. An added complication appears in the unwelcome form of Amelia's former partner, smooth-talking Darius Shank, who quickly becomes wise to Amelia's intentions. Amelia must find a way to obtain the object she desires without getting caught and without any personal entanglements, something which becomes increasingly difficult with Lewis and Darius tugging at her emotions in completely different ways. Amelia is a thief, but her personal story and her motivations make her a compelling heroine, and one ahead of her time in the 1901 America in which this adventure is set. The story's climax is satisfying even though it leaves several questions unanswered, whetting the reader's appetite for the third book still to come. Ms. Leuthold's descriptive powers are in full force here (word of caution: do not read this book on an empty stomach; the airship's dining experience seems second to none), and her characters' dialogues ring true as always. I recommend this book and look forward to further adventures in the Steam World series.

Great guide

We should have bought this map before we planned our trip. We went there for our honeymoon and we had a blast. The roads there are, hmm, different... Street names are rare, but between local directions and this map we at least made it close to where we wanted to be. This has a lot of great features like where activities are located with specific icons, blown up areas of popular destinations, and as it says it is waterproof (great for a rainforest no?).

If we had bought this before we planned our trip it would have given us a general idea of what to do where without spending a lot of time online researching. First, let me say that while 3G and GPS signals are strong, we had more issues with the software and directions not being up to date (or correct for that matter) and it's good we brought a physical map as a backup. We ended up ditching the GPS and relying on the map only because it was easier and better. So, my advice, skip the GPS from the start and just buy this instead!

I am from Costa Rica and work as a birding tour guide, I have seen many maps but this is mp is one of the best I have seen. Fairly updated and waterproof, I would say go for this one.

Really good map

It is durable and accurate and will be used in return trips. It gave a sense of where we were, where we wanted to be and what the relationship was between places and roads. The wiggles and joggles were accurate and the printing was nicely clear. Bring a map with you. It was hard to find a good one there. Even if you have GPS which we did we referred to this well appointed map.

A bit disappointing -2 1/2 stars

A disappointing outcome for a highly anticipated new book in this beloved series. I'm pretty sure that I own every book that Hannah Howell has ever written, and have really enjoyed this series in particular. This 7th book starts off with a "meet cute" moment; Bened Vaughn, our Hero, meets our heroine Primrose in the woods. She has a gun in her hands and repeatedly tells him to stop moving. He assumes she is afraid of him, but she really just doesn't want him to step on her spectacles. The H is big, dark and handsome; the h is tiny, blonde, and wears glasses - adorable! As usual, this author writes enjoyable characters and an interesting story line, but there were too many inconsistencies for me. *SPOILERISH* Having the h wear spectacles would have been a cute touch, but after their initial mention, they seemed to disappear. Primrose never takes them off, not while sleeping, not while making love; they don't even fall off when she is abducted! A missed opportunity right there- the lenses could at least have gotten all steamed up when Bened kissed her! It was also established early in the book that the h's brother didn't know that their father was dead - however, when the siblings find each other...nothing. No mention of poor, dead papa; no grief stricken reveal, just...* crickets*. I then had a real "wait, what?" moment near the end of the book. Primrose is being held captive in a church, about to be forced to marry a repugnant old man of her evil aunt's choosing ( this aunt is so villainous throughout the book, it borders on cartoonish ). Our intrepid heroine is at the altar, when the chapel door was thrown open, and Bened strode down the aisle. We later see the scene from Bened's point of view - He quietly slipped inside the church and crept down the aisle. WELL? Did he stride or did he creep? Hannah Howell has been an auto-buy for me for many years, and she will remain so. I really just wanted Bened's story to be better than this. I received this ARC from Netgalley for an honest review.

Wonderful Series - Love It

First of all - I love this series and Ms. Howell’s family of Wherelocke’s and Vaughn’s are so totally unique, creative and totally imaginative it’s hard to have to wait for the next books detailing this amazing family.

Right from the start we are introduced to Lady Primrose Wooten who is in a desperate search for her brother now that her beloved father had died under mysterious circumstances. If she cannot locate her brother in time, her odious aunt and uncle are attempting to marry her off to a very sleazy man who is rumored to have killed his last three wives. Having been unseated in the woods, she is in dire straits without her spectacles and horse. Thankfully, Sir Bened Vaughn who has a knack for calming and a sixth sense of danger has come to her aid and offers his services to Primrose.

Bened has been on his own for some time, usually hired to protect and keep safe the heirs of nobility. Having saved the life of his last client’s heir, Bened has been rewarded with a title and lands by a grateful father. On his way to inspect his new lands he runs into Primrose. Something about Primrose stirs something primal in his blood, and after hearing her story, he feels honor-bound to assist her in her search.

Filled with intrigue, danger, and a simmering sensuality Bened and Primrose’s adventures are fraught with all kinds of hazards as her vengeful and psychotically evil aunt is determined to rid herself of one more impediment blocking her way to riches and power. Naturally, the call goes out to Bened’s many relatives and with their assistance and advice, Bened and Primrose manage to keep up with the evil machinations of her killer aunt.

Bottom line: Excellent read - fast action - simmering sensuality - plus fabulous characters - what more does one need!

Exciting Read

This was an exciting read that is part of a series, but can be read as a stand alone book. The characters and storyline kept my interest because a gifted MS Howell knows how to tend to her craft.
You know that this author tantalizes the reader with lots of adventure, mystery and sexual tension. It makes one want to keep reading until the very end. The hero in this next tale of Wherlocke family, is Sir Bened Vaughn. He's handsome, gifted, dangerous and so hot it will make you think of naughty things. Bened did not grow up titled, but he's earned his way with the sweat of his brow. He's not so high in the instep, but he layed back and in control. So when Bened meets the lovely Lady Primrose Wooten on the same road as he (she's fallen off her horse) and looking for her glasses and offers his help. Primrose comes up with a pistol aimed at Bened to leave her alone and go on down the lane (so to speak). But being a noble man, he just can't seem to do that. Bened gets the story out of the lady, and says he will be her protection, and find her brother that is missing.
You will want to find out how both of stubborn people try to keep from falling in love, but fate is fickle, and tries to throw lots of fences in their way. Especially the nasty relatives of Primrose who are bad to the bone.

I would like to deny that the potential for rage

As a feminist, I approached I, Joaquin with my usual trepidation, as I do all novels written by men about men. The trepidation soon turned to interest, then absorption, and finally, revelation. This novel tells the story of the bandit who formed the basis for the legends of Zorro, but it is so much more. It took me into the heart the Jungian animus that underlies masculine myths that men are required to enact, and then into the shadow of my own femininity. I would like to deny that the potential for rage, pride, revenge, rape, and murder could exist in my own soul, but the intense identification I felt with the character of Joaquin teaches me otherwise. This is writing at its best, that seduces and then forces us out of our comfortable self-concept in order to inhabit another’s life.

It is hard to classify this novel as magical realism (a severed head that continues to narrate); a Western (it takes place in the California gold rush); or historical novel (it is very well researched, without anachronisms). I, Joaquin tells the story of a boy sired by a brujo, raised by a madrina, who tames his first stallion, survives a panther attack, and wins the heart of his perfect Rosita. Like all heros, he is defeated and humiliated brutally by the enemy – in this case, the Gringos who would take all of California, and rises again to become a scourge of all who would devour the land and beings of that shining El Dorado. So far, the classic heroic revenge tale; but the story takes us deeper, into the shifting borderlands of love or lust; mercy or weakness; power or greed; and rootedness or transcendence.

The sensuality of the writing matches the voracious love of the world of the main character. One can smell the desert after a rain; taste the tortillas and frijoles cooked at dawn; feel the terrifying power of a green-broke horse as he gallops unsteadily then wildly beneath you – as well as the smell of decay and death, the sounds of destruction, and the taste of blood in one’s mouth after a defeat.

Who is this writer, Melvin Litton, this guy who plays guitar on our porch and who modestly slips a manuscript into my hand? Not an English department poser with work shopped prose; definitely not an amateur who breaks the spell of reading with errors of grammar, fact, or expression; and not just a damned competent writer telling a hell of a story. He’s a brujo.

Narrated by the spirit of Joaquin Murrieta--extant in his decapitated head--this epic tale is the life story of the bandit/hero as he roamed 1850s California, playing a dramatic and violent role in the history of the time and place. Mr. Litton masterfully blends universal themes of passion, folly, lust, and vengeance with an authentic portrayal of a time and place itself undergoing dramatic change. Joaquin is a product of history; at the same time, he makes history. A rich, literary work of great depth, I, Joaquin, just like the head of Joaquin, speaks: passionately, forcefully, angrily; and ultimately, with great wisdom.

Wow - what a read!!

I often find that I am not blown away by many books, particularly on Kindle. But I loved this one! The descriptions are vivid and it really paints a picture of life in the so called “wild-west”. It reminds me a little bit of the Zorro movies with Anthony Hopkins. And what a movie this book would make!. Seriously, I can really picture this on the big screen. The author has helped with the level of descriptive detail in every scene and on every page.

A unique story helps too. The author has really gone to town with thinking up a different take on the wild west and California at the time. It is more than obvious time and work has gone into putting this novel together. This really shows since the scenes and chapters are so well woven together.

Five stars. I would love to see more from this author. He is not afraid to create a powerful piece of work and I will look forward to reading more of his work soon! A great read.

Alicia A. Willis is a home-school graduate and avid historian. From an early age, she has had the desire to write family-friendly, accurate books about the past. She has authored two historical novels and anticipates the Lord leading her on to many more writing projects in the future. When not writing or doing endless historical research, she enjoys being a church pianist and teaching music. She and her family live in New Mexico.

Another Classic To Add To the Shelf!

Miss Alicia Willis has once again created a sweeping and epic tale of heroism, courage, and chivalry in the medieval ages. It's written in the style of classical works such as G.A Henty and Howard Pyle and pays homage to the period by it's historical accuracy. I recommend this book to 12 year olds and up, literary and history buffs, or to a reader who is In Search of Adventure

No need to search further for Adventure

I tend to make a bad habit of underestimating certain authors. I don't think I will ever underestimate Alicia Willis again. When she asked me to review her upcoming book, I agreed, having loved her last book. To Birmingham Castle had been so good that I thought In Search of Adventure couldn't possibly be as good. I also thought it was likely some events would be reminiscent of the last book. Was I ever surprised!

In Search of Adventure was even better than To Birmingham Castle: A Tale of Friendship and Adventure. Both stories were set in the same time period, had some of the same characters, and were full of adventure and good morals. That is where the similarities end. Nothing felt repetitive, or old. It kept me tuning pages until the last one, and left me eager for the next book.

Not only were the events different, but the characters themselves were different. Alicia does an amazing job of giving each character their own personality. Nathaniel is strong and kind, but can be too easily angered or annoyed. Kenneth is faithful and compassionate, yet sometimes says the wrong things or shows a lack of respect. Each character was well developed in such a way readers will feel like they are friends.

Historically, Alicia's books are some of the best researched I have ever read. Indeed, my own upcoming historical fiction looks very poor in comparison. Not only does she write in a language that feels period correct, she puts historical details seamlessly into her story. I have only read two or three other authors that come close to Alicia's level of research.

I have to say one of the most refreshing parts of the book was the romance. Especially girls are bad about dreaming about the perfect romance and then writing every romance that way. Oh, they change a few things, but really it is the same thing over and over. Whereas in To Birmingham Castle the romance develops slowly over time, in In Search of Adventure it proceeds much quicker.
I highly recommend this book to those who like books set in the Middle Ages, adventure, high moral standards, and well researched stories.

Enter the Medieval World

In Search of Adventure is the second full-length novel of Alicia Willis, one of my favorite new authors, and the second installment of her Comrades of Honor series. It continues the story of To Birmingham Castle. Like the first, it breathes history and proves that the old way of storytelling is effective and compelling.

It felt like the Middle Ages, from its accurate description of the life of knights and squires to its extolment of chivalry, virtue, and heroism to its third-person omniscient narration and the Middle English dialogue of its characters. Miss Willis has certainly accomplished her goal of writing a historical fiction series that’s “family-friendly, entertaining, yet accurate.” (From The Comrades of Honor Series website.) I really appreciate her skill!

I found the characters interesting and endearing: Kenneth Dale, the squire, was perhaps my favorite of all the series yet. Adela, Sir Nathaniel’s love, was runner-up. Even though there were many dangerous moments, these by no means overshadowed the richness of the characters. The three main characters were such good friends and it warmed my heart to read their banter, because it was just like friends tease each other today, only in the beautiful language of old England. Each one’s devotion was exemplary.

Even though all of the main characters were virtuous, Miss Willis correctly portrayed them as exceptions, because there were many unscrupulous people – such as murderous lords and brutal knights – during that time and in the book. But we wouldn’t want to read about them without the light of true Christians nearby, now would we? What a depressing prospect! Fortunately, In Search of Adventure showed, in powerful ways, good triumphing over evil. People like Sir Nathaniel and Kenneth modeled godly character, which included making hard choices and dying to self. It influences you to analyze your own actions and motives.

I can think of only one downside, but really, it may not be a downside at all, because Miss Willis specifically targeted this subject: the book focused on small noblemen, knights, and squires, and very little on any other personality. But this limited focus allowed the relationships between the characters to be depicted in full.

There’s one more book in this series, scheduled for 2014. Let’s just say I’m glad 2014 is almost here – I can’t wait to find out how this series will wrap up!
