About the Author
Upton Sinclair (1878–1968) was a Pulitzer Prize–winning author, activist, and politician whose novel The Jungle (1906) led to the passage of the Federal Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act. Born into an impoverished family in Baltimore, Maryland, Sinclair entered City College of New York five days before his fourteenth birthday. He wrote dime novels and articles for pulp magazines to pay for his tuition, and continued his writing career as a graduate student at Columbia University. To research The Jungle, he spent seven weeks working undercover in Chicago’s meatpacking plants. The book received great critical and commercial success, and Sinclair used the proceeds to start a utopian community in New Jersey. In 1915, he moved to California, where he founded the state’s ACLU chapter and became an influential political figure, running for governor as the Democratic nominee in 1934. Sinclair wrote close to one hundred books during his lifetime, including Oil! (1927), the inspiration for the 2007 movie There Will Be Blood; Boston (1928), a documentary novel revolving around the Sacco and Vanzetti case; The Brass Check, a muckraking exposé of American journalism; and the eleven novels in the Pulitzer Prize–winning Lanny Budd series.

Not more than expected

i read the first three volumes of this saga fifty years ago in their original cloth binding, which added greatly to their charm. I reread them several times throughout the years and still found them interesting. Last year I ordered one by one the following five volumes, "A world to win" is the latest arrival. Unlike the previous four, photocopies of the original texts bound in unfriendly cardboard, it is a beautiful old copy bound in cloth, for very little money. So much for aesthetics. The political and historical background is always interesting, the writing tends to be flat, perhaps because so much is repetition. Lanny Budd's love life, his thoughts on his romantic options and his proposal to whom he finally chooses, gets more and more boring in every volume. Still, I will order the next volumes until I have read them all. My grandchildren, well read young adults, are interested in the historical and political information they provide,

1940-42: Britain vs. Fascism (with Covert American Assistance)

Britain and Germany are at war at the start of book 7 of the World's End series. France's rulers are happy with the arrangement with Germany. Marshal Pétain wants "a Catholic, god-fearing France, obedient and moral, purged of all throes of the wicked revolution". On the French Côte d'Azur, the rich enjoy themselves like never before.

In the USA, newspaper baron William Randolph Hearst continues to promote German Fascism, and his newspapers print anti-England and pro-Japan editorials. However, President Roosevelt, approves aid for Britain, and alarm develops at the extent of Nazi influence in South America.

This is a somewhat slower book than others in the series, but is still interesting for its detail n depicting how the USA entered the war against Germany. The peace mission of Rudolf Hess when he flew unaccompanied to Britain is covered in great depth. Towards the end the action shifts to Hong Kong and the book picks up a gear.

It was published in 1947 and there were hopes at that time that there would be peace at last in the world. The book paints a fanciful and unrealistic picture about communism in China and the USSR. Sinclair likens the Communist parts of China to early American Utopian communities and says that Mao Tse-Tung always wore a "kindly expression" who had the "aspect of an oracle" and the reader is told that Lanny Budd "never met a more unassuming person". Joseph Stalin comes across well too. He advises, "As fast as people get education, they will assert themselves, and a democratic society will come automatically." It even appears that Sinclair justified revolutionary terror, as at one point Lanny Budd declares, "I have to face the fact that if Stalin hadn't purged his pro-Nazi elements, including his guards, there wouldn't have been any Soviet Union at this moment; Hitler would have control of this country".

The pro-Communist propaganda aside, this is another fine book, albeit perhaps the weakest of the series.

Raimundo Silva works as a proofreader in an editorial. His act of rebellion leads him to take on the prominent role that, as a man, is his by right. This novel recounts the demolition of the historical wall of Lisbon, and the existence of that “other” one that makes it impossible for a man to communicate with others, the wall of loneliness and isolation, permanently brought down by a love fulfilled —the final wall to be demolished.

En las dos novelas que he leído de Saramago dos mundos transcurren paralelos pero que se unen metafóricamente. En la "Historia del Cerco de Lisboa" una historia de amor transcurre en la vida del protagonista, un excelente corrector de pruebas de una gran editorial, mientras que descubre sus dotes de autor por impulsos de su jefa al escribir una historia alterada de la historia nacional de Portugal por un simple no. Es una novela con suficiente ingenio e ironia que entrelaza lo intencional al querer alterar la historia oficial con tal de hacerla más nacional y que aún dentro de los grandes relatos siempre subyace una historia de amor, que nos puede hacer pensar si el amor es algo indispensable para realizar grandes cambios, conquistas o revoluciones. Esta trama de la novela es muestra de un escritor compremetido con sus ideales, pensamientos y sentimientos; un buen narrador y escritor.

A timeless proposition

The narrative is consistent and has an incredible ending. “Be Rio” reminds me of Paulo Coelho’s "The Pilgrimage" with their regional and spiritual nuances structuring a light novel that, for many, will be considered enlightened.

It is a fantastic book! It talks about Rio’s mountains and their mystery. It’s useful for a new traveler to Rio, but also takes you around through several local legends in a hyper realistic story that can make your imagination fly. Running after the Crown of Flames is not only a search through the city, but also a search within one’s self. Both mix up in a very unique way. I highly recommend this singular book for new comers to Rio and for those in search of their Spirit.

Flawed second novel

Set during the English Civil War, this novel lacks the craftsmanship of both Sabatini's first novel and of his mature works. The setup (treachery, revenge, and an unsurprising surprise revelation) has the potential for classic Sabatini treatment, but from that point on the plot collapses. The main dramatic interest from that point on is how Sabatini will get himself out of the corner he's painted himself into. Minor spoiler warning: He doesn't. The ending, driven by coincidence (as is not uncommon in Sabatini) fails to satisfy the reader, and is completely unsatisfactory by Sabatini's later standards.

Well written

The Tavern Knight is a classic adventure story well written from the first to the last page. Rafael Sabatini has written better books but I can find no fault with this one.

If you're already familiar with Sabatini - just read it. If you are not, I'd recommend reading one of his more popular books such as 'Scaramouche' first.

A Rollicking Adventure

This is a story about a man's quest for vengeance against two wealthy, snobbish, upper class individuals who'd caused him grief and anguish many years ago. But, when his "best laid plans" went awry, he found himself in one predicament after another as he tried to rectify the mistakes and mishaps that occurred each time he altered his plans. The swashbuckling scenes were vivid and exciting but not overdone. The romance was touching. The main character's wit and wisdom showed that even ruffians and scoundrels can have honor. A great read - in easily understandable English.

"Unfortunately, all too often we learn from our mistakes after it's too late. Seldom is one fortunate enough to use others' mistakes as a way of preventing unnecessary and often irreversible heartache. It's stories like this that make me see the value of religion and rules or commandments. And if suffering leads to growth, sometimes immaturity is not such a bad thing.

Basically, this is a tragically sad story. The title is Sylvia's Lovers but in my opinion it should have been Philip's Folly. He made a self-serving decision that affected several people's lives and most of all destroyed him and the object of his obsessive love, Sylvia. We all know people whose trajectory of their life was interfered with by others' dishonesty or desire for control with catastrophic results. Betrayal is very difficult to forgive and often establishes lifelong pain. by Love To Read"

An absorbing story that brings the personality of a Plains Indian to life

This book is a sensitive portrayal of the lives of the Plains Indians in the post-Civil War period as they faced the inevitable expansion of the United States. The reader experiences their lives through the person of Two Moons who suffers great personal loss as a young man at the beginning of the book, but matures in the course of the book to take an active role in defense of his people's way of life. The authors immerse the reader in the words of the Plains language, which the authors do not define, but which the reader can infer from the context. Although obviously sympathetic to their protagonists, the authors do not minimize the violent lives of the Plains Indians. They deal death to their Pawnee enemies as well as invading whites; albeit it in a structured religious context. It is an absorbing story that tells of personal conflict against a broader conflict in American history.

While I prefer Lindermuth's modern-day mystery novels, I do like historical fiction, and this book does have several mysteries interwoven throughout the story. My only negative is that the plot has a melodramatic quality to it. That's just me. Others may like that aspect. However, the author is such a good writer that both the story and the interesting characters carry the book. In addition to historical fiction buffs, this book will appeal to romance readers, particularly those who enjoy historical settings.

Watch The Hour is set in the 1870s fictional central-Pennsylvania coal-mining town of Masonville and surrounding area. The author is not only a product of this region but is the librarian of his county historical society and has an intimate knowledge about the locality and times of which he writes. The author offers a captivating portrayal of life in this place and time. It is tough, gritty and sometimes tragic.

Ben Yeager is a policeman. It is a job which is in opposition to the interests of the Irish coal workers, who do the dirtiest of jobs in the mines, and the coal worker's families. Ben's benefactor is Samuel Mason, the mine owner and richest man in the area. Trouble arises when Mason has it in mind that Ben will marry his precocious granddaughter, Phoebe, and take over the management of a reclaimed mining operation. But Ben has other interests and plans. He is in love with an Irish girl.

This love interest is at the heart of the story (no pun intended-ah, let's face it; it was intended); however, there are numerous other interesting characters and entertaining subplots that not only make Ben's life and decisions more difficult, but create tragedy and sorrow for those already suffering under the oppression of an American feudal system meant to take advantage of the masses by the rich and powerful.

Will Ben Yeager protect himself and his family's interests or will he risk all of that for a life of rejection and hardship to be with the woman he loves? The answer to that question will be for the readers to determine when they take on yet another entertaining read by J. R. Lindermuth. Recommended.

Here's a good historical fiction. This one has an excellent gritty background set in the coal mining regions of Pennsylvania in the 1870s. Benjamin Yaeger, a police officer for the coal mining company is expected to follow orders, even when they go against the grain. In carrying out his job, he inevitably crosses the Irish. His biggest challenge comes when he falls in love with an Irish girl. This is a love story, I found the characters well formed, the background interesting and informative, and I thoroughly enjoyed the tale. Recommended.

Good history and writing

I downloaded this eBook because I like J. R. Lindermuth's writing style, although the subject matter is quite different from his mystery series.

Watch the Hour is historical fiction, but with Lindermuth's usual depth of characters and story. The sense of place is excellent, truly placing me in the early Pennsylvania coal-mining towns. Information about mining was deftly inter worked with the story, which takes place during the time of the Mollie McGuires and attempts to unionize the mines. The development includes the clash of cultures, several families, mine owners, foremen, Irish workers, and law enforcement. I often felt there were too many viewpoints.

The ethnic tension is punctuated with a cross-culture romance that seems destined to fail. Most of the characters were very sympathetic, and the bad guys were--really BAD guys. The depiction of Father Delaney was particularly good.

Roll all this in with rich language and volatile weather (always one of my favorite characters) and you have an exciting, well-wrought read.
