This book is interesting and well written. The books in this series have romance and suspense throughout. They are rich in description and have well developed characters.

Like a bad farce

Your Grace, her Grace, this Grace that Grace . I couldn't even finish this book with all the your gracing going on. Completely unbelievable that a supposed " rogue" "rakehell" is rendered completely incapable of speech and can't do anything but stare and stammer when she wears a strand of pearls in her hair. Glad I borrowed this book on kindle unlimited because it wasn't even worth the battery power I wasted on reading as far as I did.

OKAY

I rated as okay, the story line was good but the story lacked substance, how can I explain. Regardless of how proper society might have been at the time it would have been better if family members spoke to each as 'mother' and 'father' when within the family or close friends. The author did change it at some point in the story when his father(duke) asked him(son) otherwise it makes the character cold. I was getting so confused with so many 'your grace' back and forth. I am avid reader, reading at least three to four books a week. I rate a story as great when the author brings excitement when dangerous events are happening, or (passion) deep feeling between two lovers, or the fear. I want to feel: cry when the characters suffer or hurt, anger when something bad happens or someone get wronged, laugh when something is funny, feel the happiness of the characters. I don't want to be negative but I want to help the author improve.

About the Author
Jim Hitt is a graduate of North Texas State University and holds a BA in English and history and a MA in history. In addition to his many articles related to the west and film, he is the author of THE AMERICAN WEST, FROM FICTION INTO FILM (McFarland, 1991), which has been called the definitive monograph on the subject, and WORDS AND SHADOWS (Citadel, 1993), an examination of mainstream American literature and its connection to film. He is also represented in THE LOUIS L’AMOUR COMPANION (Andrews and McMeel, 1992). In 2001, Adventure Books published his novel THE LAST WARRIOR. In 2009 his short story “The Boy with Too Much Hair” won the grand prize for best fantasy story from Once Written.com In 2010 Aberdeen Bay released CARNY: A NOVEL IN STORIES, which won the Grand Prize for Fiction at the 2011 Next Generation Indie Book Awards. He has also been a guest speaker at the Gene Autry Museum.

Unforgettable Powerful Story

I hope everyone has a chance to grab a copy of this book. It is well written and touches on a difficult subject of racism. Sometimes it is difficult to write about , but the author really did a great job of allowing readers to understand what it is feels to look different from others and not be accepted by them .

The story takes place in a small Texas town in the 1920s. I love stories set in Texas. Well it could be that I live in Texas and think it is a great place to live. The author describes the town as a small town where neighbor's help each other. However there is an underlying issue that is starting to cause a stir in the town. I can't imagine that even in the early days there were tension between races, but it is something that is real and the author captures the anger, hurt and true impact of this issue with a powerful story.

Davy is a young boy who sees his uncle Marsh as he exits the train after serving in the war. Marsh looks different with the weight of the war showing on his face. I could picture his haggard look and feel his pain as he steps off into the crowd. Can you imagine what he must have witnessed fighting in the war? It has really changed him and Davy takes note of this . Does Marsh look well or is he home because his health has deteriorated ?

The story is very well written and the characters are very relatable . I loved Davy and his determination to fight injustice. There is an encounter with a group that will cause a great amount of chaos. Will Davy and his family be able to stand up to them? What happens when Davy becomes friends with someone that others disapprove of? Would you be brave enough to stand up for what is right?

As a young boy, Davey had been orphaned. His Uncle Marsh and Aunt Esther raised him. As the story opens, sixteen-year-old Davey is accompanying Esther to the train station. Uncle Marsh is returning home after serving in WWI. When he’d left, he’d been strong and in the best of health. Davey describes the man now standing before him. “His eyes were so deeply embedded in his skull that they appeared as black holes, and gray splotches covered his skin like a dog with mange. He walked with a shuffle …” Davey understands that the army “…sent him home to die.” But, Aunt Esther wasn’t going to let Marsh die. She hired Sister Rose, a black woman who practiced ancient herbal remedies. Many people thought she was a witch. And, many people had a problem with a black woman working for Marsh and Esther –.

While Sister Rose tended to Uncle Marsh, Davey got to know her son, Daniel. It was awkward at first, but slowly they became friends. Eventually, Davey joined with Daniel and a black girl, Rachel, to help with the renovation of a house to use as a school. It was Sister Rose’s dream for the blacks to learn to read and write. The schoolhouse was located in Boonsville, where most of the blacks lived. Many of the whites thought that’s where they should keep themselves. The hatred within the Twin Forks community began to escalate to dangerous levels.

This is all told from Davey’s perspective. It was the year he ‘grew up’ in many ways. It’s a ‘coming of age’ story of the aftermath of war, racial hatred within the United States, standing up for what is right, learning about love and learning about hate. Since Uncle Marsh’s illness was a part of the story, I would have liked to have known what he was actually suffering with. I took the liberty of doing a ‘google’ search to try to figure it out, and believe it was either radiation poisoning or a reaction to mustard gas. This is a historical fiction which seems to have been researched particularly well. Hearing the story from Davy’s viewpoint was the perfect vehicle for this story. Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

The story is set in a small town in rural Texas in the 1920s and the theme is firstly, small town life around relatively normal events, and secondly, the racial tensions between the white residents and the local people of colour who live in a nearby shanty village.
We see the story through the eyes of Davy, who is coming into adulthood and destined to go to college, despite his modest upbringing. He is a great reader and is questioning everything about the behaviour of those around him.
His uncle Marsh, recently returned on the edge of death from the war, has an ethical and moral stance on life which he returned with after witnessing the atrocities of the war. This stance leads Marsh to stand up to a great injustice (view spoiler)
Davy finds himself siding with his uncle and aunt and getting into deep water with the town's Klu Klux Klan membership.
A poignant story. The characters are well drawn. There are tragic and poetic moments in the narrative which make it a very enjoyable read.

Tainted Harvest Paints Picture of Unchecked Bigotry

A work of fiction, Tainted Harvest explores the Salem witch trials through the eyes of Tituba, who confessed to witchcraft during those trials. Because much about the historical Tituba is unknown, Smith is able to create a character to whom we can relate today, with a deeper understanding of science and nature than the people of her community might have had in the seventeenth century. Like the Crucible - also a fictionalized account of the Salem witch trial era published during the McCarthy era - Tainted Harvest offers a political/allegorical message. It is this: just as witch hunts were present in the seventeenth century, witch hunts based on race, culture, and religious beliefs are also present in the world today. As it unfolds, the story leads readers to the inescapable conclusion that unchecked bigotry, racism, and cultural disrespect lead inevitably to tragic outcomes.

This tale of racial and religious bigotry in colonial New England is a mirror for today

I have read several nonfiction books about the Salem witch trials and seen several versions of the Crucible. So, I was surprised to find that this novel took a very different approach. By focusing on the inner life of Tituba and her struggles to deal with her life as a slave, the author provides a new perspective on the witch panic that devastated this part of New England. I thought the story built quite well. The academic world knows very little about Tituba and this author has fleshed her out as a real woman, mourning her lost family after she was captured, falling in love, and trying to find a way to make her life work in this alien world. This approach allows us to look at the tragedy of slavery, of racial bigotry, of class bias, and religious persecution from a novel perspective. A couple of the other characters in this novel lacked depth in their characterization, but this seemingly reflected the limits of how much Tituba was able to interact with them.

This book is well paced, easy to read, with descriptions that are clear without being overly detailed and distracting. The author's background as a screen writer clearly influenced this book as her crafting of the scenes of this story are carefully staged and paced. I can imagine this novel being readily adapted for a film. It is a telling story with a number of parallels to those in contemporary society who would persecute those with different viewpoints and traditions. I had read Nancy Smith's debut novel, a science fiction tale called "The Slow Kill," a couple of years ago and quite liked it.This novel is quite different from that story and genre, but still shows her ear for dialogue and her attention to small details that help make the story come alive.

Thought Provoking Historical Fiction

I had read Ms. Smith’s last book and was looking forward to seeing what this one would be like. It was a great read and did not disappoint at all. This book seemed to follow the author’s past stylings with a fictional recreation of possible historic or futuristic scenarios. Her character and scene development is very strong and I became invested in the characters and their lives as I read. I found the premise for an explanation of the Salem Witch Trial events thought-provoking and her portrayal of it strong. I was not very familiar with the history of the witch trials but the book prompted me to look it up. I feel Ms. Smith did an excellent job of combining the known history with creative details to make for a very interesting and plausible story line. I’m very much looking forward to her next book.

Owen Glendower, Welsh Hero!

This is the story of the larger-than-life hero of the Welsh, Owen Glendower. The story takes place in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. The story is told by several narratives of main characters in the novel such as: Geoffrey Chaucer, Lady Hanmer of Flintshire-later his wife, Griffith Lloyd-Owen's bard among other characters. Owen is the last Welsh Prince of Wales with a personality and physical presence that is striking for a man, from what was considered a wild and subject courntry of England.
He struggles with his desire for peace while at the same time he wages war on England to recognize Wale's independence. A complex, exciting story of a man who would be king of Wales, but really didn't want to.
This is an out-of-print books, however I found a copy easily enough, and is well worth the effort and time to read. Like all of Rofheart's books they are narratives of several characters, some historical, others fictional.

A historical novel about the Welsh hero Owen Glendower, descendant of Llewellyn the Great. Handsome, educated, well-traveled, and cosmopolitan, Rofheart paints Glendower as a renaissance man, raised during a time of peace and inclusion for the Welsh, as the English were beginning to loosen harsh, restrictive laws from earlier wars. But all that changed when Edward III's grandson, Richard II was forced to abdicate and then was murdered by his cousin, Henry Bolingbroke (later Henry IV). Welsh sympathies fell on the side of Richard, leading to a revolt against Bolingbroke.

Divided into six first-person narratives, one by Owen and five other individuals who know him, Rofheart conveys through their eyes Glendower's story and the unity and sense of community of the Welsh, their individualism and their mysticism, their love of poetry, their open, more tolerant society, and their stubborn fight against the encroachment of an English feudal society that meant slavery for them.

Adams himself drew heavily from his own exciting life to fill his heroic and exciting western adventures. He not only wrote tales that were inspiring and epic visions of the old west, he lived them himself. This was one of his major works, and is truly just as inspirational today as they were when first written. The cowboy, cattle, villains, Indians, the frontier life, violence and friendship, were all hallmarks of his stories. Go back to those wonderful days with this great Adams story.

Anything you want to know about starting a Cattle ranch and delivering the beeves to market---this is the story. Starts off with two young boys alone in western Kansas and their building a herd along the cattle drive trail from Texas to the north But then it seems to get long and drawn out about how they bring those beeves to market and selling them etc. Very informative of how it was done at that time.

I really enjoyed the insights into the daily lives of those living ...

I kept waiting for the gun slinger to make the scene which shows how habituated I've become to modern westerns. Due to the year this was written, I have a suspicion this is much more descriptive of that era than most of our present-day westerns. I really enjoyed the insights into the daily lives of those living on the frontier. This is much more indicative of the people who made it on their own hard work and the danger and privation they faced as opposed to modern people who "make it" by sitting in an office and investing other people's money. That was the real American dream, not inheriting millions.

Cinco familias - mineros galeses, terratenientes ingleses, aristócratas alemanes y políticos norteamericanos - se reencuentran de nuevo en los convulsos años treinta, esta vez dos generaciones que en sus respectivos paises viven los acontecimientos históricos que les tocó vivir, lidian, apoyan o se enfrentan a ideologías políticas que les afectan directa o indirectamente y durante dos décadas convulsas además de amar y sufrir como cualquier ser humano luchan por sus ideales, prueban la cruda realidad del poder político, se decepcionan, se radicalizan, luchan y algunos hasta mueren por sus convicciones mientras sus vidas en una amarga ironía de la vida los alínea y los conduce por tortuosos caminos que los separan, los distancia y los reconcilia a medida que el curso de la historia se va moldeando de nuevo.
Segunda parte de la trilogía "The Century", a traves de los personajes que dan vida a los acontecimientos de cambiaron el curso de la humanidad el autor nos acerca a la ascención de los nazis al poder en 1933, la Guerra Civil Española de 1936-1939, la Segunda Guerra Mundial de 1939-1945 y a los primeros años de la Guerra Fría con todas sus consecuencias para los seres humanos que de una forma u otra les tocó padecerlas. Una magistral obra que a pesar de que algunos diálogos resultan demasiado rápidos y facilones de digerir el autor capta la atención del lector y no desluce para nada en la calidad de la obra. Esperemos que la tercera parte de la trilogía sea igual de intensa, entretenida, instructiva e interesante que las dos anteriores.

One of the best novels ever read. Con citas históricas novelado amenamente, una novela que vale la pena leer. Espero con ansias el 3 tomo de la trilogía. Descripción de personajes coherente, algunas veces se enreda en el transcurso de la historia, pero al principio se especifican quiene son. No es necesario ser historiador para entender ese invierno que atravesó el mundo y que no debemos atravesar nunca más. NEVER AGAIN!!!

Que libro tan maravilloso. Me encanta la historia y este libro fue genial para mi. Aunque me gustó más la trama del primer libro de la trilogía, considero que está muy bien hecho y aprecié la manera en que hila las vidas de los personajes. Aunque sean libros muy largos, el tiempo pasa rápidamente. Lo recomiendo mucho.
