Condon's Glory

Prophetic and insightful, Condon knew the name of the games. Never has there been such a history of the Catholic Church as The Venerable Bead. The Manchurian Candidate was a precursor of the assassination of JFK and The Whisper of the Axe detailed 9/11 - in 1976. Prizzi's Glory, though, imho, is RC's masterpiece. I won't ruin it for you. Just do yourself the biggest favour imaginable and read it.
I can only imagine that the other reviewer here has other views on Ronald Reagan than Mr Condon had.

Pretty good, but puzzling

I got this after reading Prizzi's Honor, then Prizzi's Family, both of which I loved, altho in each of his books after Prizzi's Honor, for some reason when referring to Charlie's former love interests, he puts them in an entirely different scenario, when the original one would have worked just fine in the current reference as far as the story goes. Puzzling, since he is the one who created the characters and their endings in regard to the part they each played in Charlie's past. Even the reason Maerose was banished from the family after her actions at the so-called family party, which was actually portrayed as her wanting to spare Charlie having to marry her, so she faked being drunk and obnoxious and left with a fellow to Mexico. Why not refer back to that very clever scene instead of something entirely different??? But except for a few boring chapters trying to detail the American political system and how it all works behind the scenes, the book was good, just not as good as Honor and Family.

In the first part of the novel, Robinson pursues his livelihood by going to sea. After a few false starts, he has some success but a third voyage ends in slavery. He eventually escapes and is helped to Brazil where he becomes a successful plantation owner. He embarks on a slave gathering expedition to West Africa but is shipwrecked off the coast of Venezuela in a terrible storm. The majority of the novel deals with Robinson's life on the island-how he accomplishes his survival and even establishes his "kingdom"; how he moves from a state of discontent to one of resignation and contentment; how he meets his companion Friday (named after the day of the week he appeared) and, finally, how he leaves the island. Grade 3-6-As with any abridged version, the story is spare, but what it loses in prose, it gains in readability. The easy-to-understand text keeps some of the flavor of the original, but in condensing 27 chapters and more than 300 pages of narrative to 50-plus pages with half as many chapters, much of the long-winded description has been eliminated. However, the modernized spelling, added dialogue, shortened expository passages, large type, and emphasis on fast-paced storytelling will make this classic accessible to a younger audience. The story ends abruptly with Robinson Crusoe's return to England. None of the adventures after his arrival in his homeland-the discovery of riches at his Brazilian plantation, Friday's encounter with the bear, or the attack by ravenous wolves on the trek to France-are included. Nevertheless, the bare-bones telling, combined with more than a dozen of Wyeth's lavish oil paintings (which originally graced the 1920 edition), makes this a worthwhile purchase.

One of the first novels ever written, Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (1719), the classic adventure story of a man marooned on an island for nearly 30 years, is part of our culture. From Scott O'Dell's Island of the Blue Dolphins (1960) to the recent movie Castaway, the elemental situation of the person suddenly alone, who must make a life in a dangerous environment, continues to enthrall all ages. Yet few adults, never mind young people, can wade through Defoe's lengthy tome with its convoluted eighteenth-century prose. So here's a shortened storybook version--retold by Timothy Meis in accessible style, yet true to the spirit of the original and the time when it was first published--in a large picture-book format with clear type, high-quality paper, and more than a dozen unforgettable narrative paintings by Wyeth, first published in 1920 and newly reproduced here in glowing color.

The story begins with the universal quest: the young man in Britain, torn between his safe home and his hunger for adventure, breaks away from his loving father and sails away into the unknown. After a series of harrowing escapes, he's shipwrecked on a desert island. His lively first-person account shows how his intelligence and education help him survive for many years, and how he uses technology, including guns and tools salvaged from the ship. He sets up home, reads the Bible, finds a parrot as a pet, and even devises a calendar to keep track of time. Then one day he finds a human footprint: "Was it someone who could save me and take me back to civilization? Or was it a savage who landed here?" When some "savages" arrive in several canoes, he uses his guns to get rid of them, and he rescues one of their captives, a handsome fellow with very dark skin. Delighted to have a companion at last, Crusoe names the newcomer Friday (since Crusoe found him on Friday). Crusoe teaches "my man Friday" to speak English, fire a gun, carve a canoe, and clothe his nakedness, and they live happily together. Later they rescue a white man and Friday's father from a group of "savages," and, eventually, they all return to their homes.

Defoe is said to have based his novel on the true adventures of Alexander Selkirk (who spent four or five years on an island in the South Pacific) and on accounts of other castaways of the time. The survival adventure is still enthralling. But what about the racism? This is clearly the classic colonialist story, but whose history is it? And how will young people read it today? Is it just boring, politically correct nitpicking to object to the use of the word "savages" throughout the book and even on the book flap? Yes, there are some bad guys among the whites, but even they are called "men"; the dark-skinned people are always known as "savages." How do we talk about this story today? The guns and tools make Crusoe boss, but wouldn't Friday have been able to teach the newcomer some survival skills? Does it never occur to Crusoe to learn Friday's own name and language? Who discovered whom? Wyeth's clear, action-packed illustrations are magnificent. But there's one shockingly jarring scene of Friday groveling in gratitude at Crusoe's feet. When the whites say thanks, they embrace each other.

So, no, the objections are not just P. C. sermonizing. The racism is highly offensive. But the fact that the story is so widely known and has such elemental appeal makes this an excellent book for discussion, especially in classes studying the history of exploration and discovery. Louise Erdrich addressed a similar problem [BKL Ap 1 99] when she commented that although she had loved the Little House books as a child, in rereading them as an adult, she was shocked to recognize that "not only was there no consciousness about the displaced people whose land the newcomers were taking, but also that there was a fair amount of racism." Still, she disagrees with censorship of any kind: "The best way is for good teachers and parents to install racism radar detectors so that kids can make their own judgments, because they're going to have to."

The title character leaves his comfortable middle-class home in England to go to sea. Surviving shipwreck, he lives on an island for 28 years, alone for most of the time until he saves the life of a savage, whom he names Friday. The two men eventually leave the island for England. Defoe probably based part of Crusoe's tale on the real-life experiences of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish sailor who at his own request was put ashore on an uninhabited island in 1704 after a quarrel with his captain. He stayed there until 1709. The book was an immediate success in England and on the European continent, and Defoe wrote a sequel (The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe) that was also published in 1719. WARNING: This is NOT the original text

Defoe helped to define the modern fictional novel when he wrote about the tales of Robinson Crusoe. The book has a strong religious theme, as was Defoe's intention. However, this version of the text censors out some of the language against what Defoe called the Papist Church (or the Roman Catholic Church) as well as some items which would be considered racially insensitive today (but leaving in much of it as well). I don't understand why this version leaves out some of those parts, as they completely change the story that Defoe intended. I'm not sure that Amazon knows these texts are censored (not the original) as there is no allusion to it in the book's description.

Superior and inspirational reading for adults and teens

After reading Glyn Williams' trenchant 'The Prize Of All The Oceans' I had an overwhelming desire to read this classic once again. I first read it when I was a mere 10 year old and it completely mesmerized me; I find that it still held the same power over me thirty years later. It is difficult to put this tale down once the title character becomes a castaway on the "island of despair" (as Crusoe refers to it) and he begins the battle against the odds to survive. Facing extreme tropical heat, torrential storms, a dreadful loneliness and the struggle to master some of the simplest of skills we take for granted Crusoe wages his one-man crusade for survival. Beginning his desolate existence steeped in woeful self-pity he slowly realizes through a series of trying circumstances, devotional reading of the Bible and finally relief from his isolated state that the experience proves to be one of reverie. In the process Crusoe becomes quite possibly the most inspirational figure to spring forth from the pages of literature.
Though it is annually listed by literature scholars as one of the 100 finest works of fiction, today primarily adolescents read Defoe's enduring tale as part of their required reading for school; very few others rarely bother with this nearly three century old tale. 'Robinson Crusoe' it seems is a classic awaiting a renaissance of rediscovery by adults who regularly read for either leisure or as a part of continuing education. While the novel's approach to morality may seem a bit old fashioned by today's contemporary standards, the character's awakening to wisdom, inner strength and faith will inspire any reader of any age. Crusoe's ability to steel himself against the onslaught of natural elements, his own self doubts and finally a band of savages who discover his "island empire" should win over even the most jaded of us. This Norton Critical Edition is the perfect package to gain a deep appreciation for this masterpiece of the English language. So do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this book today and transport yourself back to your youth and also to a time long past. It's a journey you won't regret taking.

An adventure, but different than you might expect

The author of Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe, is generally credited with being one of the first novel writers in the English language. The book is surely an influential one-- spawning countless imitations, derivations, and (in our era) reality-based television shows.

It is billed, quite fairly, as an adventure story. However, it is a very different kind of adventure than the modern action-sequence laden book which readers today may expect. It is an adventure story, but one which centers primarily on mastery and morality.

The morality is placed centrally in the book when Crusoe rejects the advice of his father to accept the happiness of the middle class life to which he was born. Against the wishes of his family, he runs off to sea to find adventure. It is not until Crusoe literally recreates a primitive approximation of that middle class life for himself on his island that he is freed.

Crusoe is also a story about the ability of mankind to master his surroundings through hard work, patience, and Christianity. The combination of these three supports are what allow him to escape captivity in Africa, overcome the deadly obstacles on the island, and finally leave the island itself. His physical prowess and combat skills are significantly less important to his journey than the message of trust and persistance that the decades he spends on the island convey. While this message might need tempering for the modern reader, it is also inspirational and important to read.

If the potential reader is not used to the diction of the time, the book itself may take some patience and persistance. It pays off, in the end, and should be an excellent book for the young teenager (or the not-so-young grown-up) interested in stories of adventure. The child who reads and enjoys My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George would probably be a good potential audience for Robinson Crusoe. For a good life-at-sea duo, you might consider pairing it with Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana.

If you’re looking for your newest fantasy fiction fix, look no further. I think the best fantasy stories are those that create a visceral world that the readers fully want to envelope themselves in. The Prisoner of War, set in Viking age and full of all the tantalizing details that make the fantasy genre great, gives you just that.

I’m excited to see this serial novel unfold, and have no doubt this will rival The Game of Thrones in both its popularity and cult following. Sex, war and Vikings, all set against the backdrop rural Norway, and written in a way that makes you think twice about values of both that time and this one. Fully entertaining and a mighty good read.

This was a really fun read. It touches on the risqué in its sexual content, but does so in a way that doesn't have the cheesiness of the romance-novel genre, and maintains a good balance and sophistication. Descriptive and easy to read, and although I know nothing about the viking era, it seemed historically believable and well researched. I am excited to see how the story unfolds!

A first-rate addition to Saramago's works

I hated to see the remaining pages of "Essay on Lucidity" dwindle, so much did I enjoy reading every word of Saramago's latest novel. This is a first-rate addition to the upper tier of Saramago's works.

In the Nov. 8, 2004, issue of "The American Conservative" magazine, the managing editor, Kara Hopkins, advocated not voting in the pending presidential election. "Silence is a profound expression," she argued, "and enough unraised voices eventually turn even the most partisan heads." "Elections," she contended, "maintain the illusion of opposing parties exchanging ideas rather than political animals competing for power. Selling voting as the ultimate expression of citizenship . . . legitimizes the process that keeps them in control and makes the public docile by enforcing the notion that we rule ourselves."

It is as if she read Saramago's mind, or vice-versa. In "Essay on Lucidity," some 70 percent of the residents of the capital of an unnamed country (presumably European, but, Saramago announces sardonically, not Portugal) turn in blank ballots in an election, refusing to vote for the Party of the Right, the Party of the Center, or the Party of the Left. The government, dominated by unsavory and unprincipled authoritarians, is horrified that the façade of democracy has broken down and orders the election to be reheld. But the percentage of blank votes is higher than before.

The government's reaction, though often fumbling, is vicious and lethal. It uses various Orwellian techniques and, as it deems necessary, violence to punish the capital's residents and try to return them to the fold. Saramago narrates events at a languid pace, sometimes using his long commentaries disarmingly to hide some horror that may be announced in a single sentence at the end of an anodyne, soothing paragraph.

This is a fable. It is not intended to be entirely realistic, and the reader must suspend disbelief at times. In the real world, a European country that took Draconian measures against its citizens for refusing to vote would be subject to various external sanctions and pressures and would have to back down. From 1993-1997 Canada tolerated having as its official opposition the Bloc Québécois, whose goal is to dissolve the country. But Saramago is so masterly a writer that he makes the implausible possible. The reader does soon ask, "Why would any government that observes the forms of democracy behave this way?" A plot twist that appears in the middle of the novel provides an answer. I've already seen too many reviews give it away, and I'm not going to follow suit.

In "Essay on Lucidity," Saramago continues his dance with the Portuguese language in ways that are charming. Even more than in "The Cave," his characters speak a Portuguese that is so formal as to exceed the tone of much formal writing. If anyone spoke this way in Brazil, he or she either would not be understood or would be regarded as mannered and pompous. That would probably also be true even in the most educated circles of Portuguese society. But Saramago's use of the King's Portuguese doesn't come across as pretentious; rather, it's a celebration of the outer reaches of classic Portuguese. I often think that Saramago's goal is to restore a full-fledged type of Portuguese that is fading, perhaps thanks to an onslaught of televised soap operas and the like. Like Shakespeare, whose facility with language and extraordinary vocabulary altered English forever, Saramago may succeed in elevating Portuguese to a language different from the form that preceded his literary career. That would have to be the supreme achievement of any writer of literature.

Inventando el enemigo

Todo comienza cuando en la capital sin nombre de un país cualquiera acostumbrado a escoger entre las vertientes que el proceso democrático occidental denomina derechista, centrista e izquierdista, una aplastante mayoría de los ciudadanos decidió votar en blanco, como una muestra de disconformidad con el régimen político que supuestamente los representa.

El resultado es cuestionado por quienes ocupan el poder, y convocan la celebración de una segunda votación, en la que los ciudadanos reafirman un mayor desencanto popular que en la primera. La cúpula gubernamental sospecha de una conspiración masiva en su contra, organizada por subversivos o anarquistas dispuestos a acabar con la idea de lo que consideran debe ser una democracia.

Un estado de emergencia es declarado, seguido de la formación de una red de espionaje para señalar quiénes habían votado en blanco y descubrir quiénes encabezaban la supuesta conspiración. Al no lograr avanzar en su investigación, el gobierno declara el estado de sitio y abandona la ciudad rebelde, como un castigo a los disidentes capitalinos, que se las ingenian para mantener la ciudad funcionando.

Durante una reunión de ministros, se propone una explicación que, después de un comienzo un tanto lento, hace que la trama adquiera velocidad: se intenta conectar la epidemia de ceguera de cuatro años atrás, con la epidemia del voto en blanco. Saramago ata así esta obra a su anterior, Ensayo sobre la ceguera, en la que solo una mujer quedó con vista.

Con la prensa, casi en su totalidad inclinada en favor del gobierno, se logra inventar al enemigo que no se tiene. Avanzando en la lectura, el lector logra entender que los votos en blanco no son otra cosa que una expresión ciudadana de insatisfacción con el funcionamiento de la democracia.

La primera parte de Ensayo sobre la lucidez avanza con la lentitud de un suero medicinal. Un lector que desconozca a Saramago, sus personajes y lugares sin nombre, y que no esté acostumbrado a la literatura sociopolítica que requiere mente alerta y abierta, puede abandonar la lectura en los primeros capítulos. La flojera inicial de elementos de acción y suspenso, esenciales estímulos para el lector que más que aprender tiene como propósito entretenerse, puede decepcionar a más de uno.

La política como tópico literario puede, y en este caso logra al menos durante las primeras 150 páginas, retardar el desarrollo de la novela. Si el lector regular logra pasar de ahí, cuando el suero exprime sus últimas gotas, proseguirá con la energía y curiosidad suficiente para motivarse a terminar las casi 400 páginas restantes.

En pleno siglo XXI, algo de esta obra me molesta. La mujer, ente imprescindible en las sociedades y gobiernos modernos, no obtiene el rol merecido que Saramago destacara en Ensayo sobre la ceguera. Aquí es relegada a un segundo plano, organizando la limpieza de las calles cuando el gobierno falla en hacerlo o cuando el autor trae de los pelos un final inesperado, necesitando un muerto. En este caso, una muerta.

Algunos críticos han sugerido leer primero Ensayo sobre la ceguera. Estimo que no es necesario. Saramago, a medida que va introduciendo elementos aparecidos en la anterior obra -como la presencia de la mujer que nunca perdió la vista-, se cuida de describirlos someramente.

Esta es una obra diferente y, como tal, debe promoverse.

Historia interesante, pero novela fallida

Hacia el final de la novela uno de los personajes comenta una frase que podría sintetizar el sentido de la novela "Creo que no nos quedamos ciegos, creo que estamos ciegos, Ciegos que ven, Ciegos que, viendo, no ven", me parece que la novela, mas que narrar una historia que podría resultar trillada sobre una epidemia de ceguera que se expande por el mundo, nos presenta una fotografía un tanto apocalíptica de la humanidad, llena de defectos y vicios, que con la llegada de la epidemia se magnifican. Se nos presenta así un ser humano que no es capaz de organizarse como sociedad para resolver sus problemas, que se deteriora y entra en un círculo de descomposición, lleno de vicios y egoísmos, a la vez que nos presenta una imagen del poder autoritario e insensible. Es precisamente ese sentido de retórica ideológica lo que a mi gusto daña la novela, pues partiendo de un argumento que podría resultar interesante explotada por la exquisita narrativa de Saramago, la historia mas bien se enfrasca en describir y detallar una y otra vez, reiteradamente y hasta el cansancio imágenes de desesperanza y degradación de la sociedad, dejando atrás el desarrollo de la historia y los personajes. Como su nombre lo indica, esta historia asemeja más un ensayo literario, pero bien podría haberse escrito en la mitad de su extensión sin perder su impacto y sentido, y evitando ser tan reiterativa.

Well worth reading

The Secret Adversary introduces Agatha Christie's characters of Tommy and Tuppence, an out of work young man and woman who decide to become "adventurers" out of a lack of anything better to do. They quite accidentally get sucked into an international mystery that reaches to the highest levels of British government.

This story takes place shortly after WWI, and there are a few obscure terms -- even to my British coworker -- but they don't hinder the enjoyment of the story. It is interesting to see attitudes and philosophies of early 20th English perspective.

It's Agatha Christie, one of the best-selling authors of the 20th century, so you can expect good work. The characters are well-written, the story is quite gripping, and the ending is satisfying (if a tad predictable). This made me want to read more Christie and more Tommy & Tuppence.

A little hint if you want it: Pay attention to the telegrams.

A Serendipitous Read

I have not been a big fan of the Tommy and Tuppence episodes on PBS' Agatha Christie series; however, this is a surprisingly well-written thriller even for Agatha Christie. The plot is convoluted, in a nice way, and the dialogue believable. I missed the mark completely in identifying the villain. Tommy and Tuppence are a nice break from Miss Marple and M. Poirot, and I recommend the book for anyone who enjoys Agatha Christie's style.

Crime before technology

I've recently become addicted to crime shows and books. In the age of "24" and CSI and all these hyper-tech worlds, there's a novelty in going back to the 1920s when people left telegrams and couldn't track the bad guy on satellite-powered traffic cameras.

This version for Kindle doesn't have an active table of contents. However, I just make a bookmark at the beginning of each chapter, so I don't see what the big deal is. Thanks whoever made it available to us for free!

George Gissing is not a name most people would recognize as one of the great Victorian novelists.Though always admired by those who experienced his powerful and original work,he never achieved the wide readership that the critically underrated Trollope has,let alone the perennial favorites-the Brontes and Dickens.Even obviously lesser yet talented authors such as Wilkie Collins,Mary Elizabeth Braddon and Marie Corelli are certainly more read today than Gissing.Yet he was best English novelist(along with Thomas Hardy and Robert Louis Stevenson) of the late Victorian era with his unsparing realism and trenchant observations on class and manners filtered through a nervous and uncertain sensibility.His comparative obscurity may be due to the reputation his work has for being depressing(it is not)and his iconoclasm-he was an agnostic maverick whose criticisms of capitalism,religion and sex still will unease those seeking in Victorian literature an escape to simpler,kinder times.What is most remarkable about George Gissing(and sometimes most poignant)is that he had no set philosophy and was himself unable to extract concrete and assuring meanings from life even as he attempted to depict and explicate it."Born in Exile" tells the story of one Godwin Peake,a poor,socially insecure but brilliant college graduate whose yearnings to belong to the "respectable" world clash with his intellectual rejection of its conservatism. a slow yet thought-provoking slice of 1890s Britain..

While Born in Exile is certainly a novel, it is actually a study of the spiritual/social upheavals during 1890s Britain. The aristocracy was losing its hold on power in the media, government and the church to the 'radicals', namely the emerging working class in democratic society. The main character in this novel is caught in the crossroads. On the one hand he aspires for the wealth and prestige found in the aristocracy, yet his background is humble and his spiritual beliefs are very modern (eg, he believes in evolution). His disgust of his working-class family and friends drive him to become a country 'gentleman' at all costs ... to the extent of becoming a complete charleton, abusing people's kind graces and forfeiting his own strongly-held religious beliefs. The end result is not entirely predictable.
Born in Exile is a very intense read. It does plod along with excessive philisophical bantering. But the second half does move along at a reasonable pace and, overall, it is a worthy read.
Bottom line: Gissing fans will love Born in Exile. George Gissing newbies should first read New Grub Street, his masterpiece.

Godwin Peak

Just before publication in 1892, George Gissing changed the title of his novel to the evocative "Born in Exile" from the name of its primary character, the difficult, complex anti-hero, Godwin Peak. Although written after Gissing had made a name for himself with "New Grub Street" and other books, "Born in Exile" was a hard sell to the publishers. The book was rejected several times and nearly passed over. The book has remained little read over the years. Yet it is an extraordinary book, perhaps Gissing's best. For all its datedness, length and awkwardness, this book will reward careful reading.

The book is a detailed study of its title character and a novel of ideas. The book is among the first and the best novels to explore the relationship between Darwinism and geology and traditional religious beliefs. The book has much to say about sexuality, about the life of the mind, the erosion of values, social classes, and social change. Gissing seemed greatly influenced by Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment" and by Turgenev's "Fathers and Children" in writing "Born in Exile".

In some respects, Peak is modeled of Gissing himself and Gissing described the novel to a friend as "a book I had to write". Born, as was Gissing himself, to a struggling lower-middle class pharmacist, Peak is intelligent, broodingly introspective, skeptical, and rootless. He is ashamed of his origins. He both envies and scorns the upper classes and believes his intellectual gifts entitle him to a higher place. Thus Peak sees himself, in a phrase repeated several times in the book as "Born in Exile."

As a young man, Peak secures a scholarship to Whitelaw College where he distinguishes himself both in the sciences and in literature but cannot decide what he wants to do. In an odd but critical turn in the book, he leaves Whitelaw before his final year because his uncle proposes to open a cheap restaurant in the community and Peak believes this association with his uncle would shame him. He moves to London where he graduates from the London School of Mines, becomes a chemist, and falls in with a group of radical freethinkers and journalists. He has what seems to be the makings of a successful life. Peak is a skeptic and anonymously publishes an article "The New Sophistry" in a leading magazine which criticizes severely efforts to reconcile Darwinian science and geologic time with religion. The various types of arguments on all sides seem not much different from those in current debate.

Dissatisfied with his social position, Peak leaves London to try to ingratiate himself into the upper classes. Peak says to a friend in a key passage of the book that he does not believe women need to be intelligent or enlightened: women need to be sexual. And so Peak goes to look for a wife and self-destructs in the process. Peak meets a family with a landed estate, the Warricombs, whom he had known from his days at Whitelaw. The father of the family, Martin Warricomb, is a student of geology. Peak pretends to have shifted his career goals to become a minister in the Church of England. Peak ingratiates himself with Martin Warricomb, who is surprisingly liberal minded, by trying to show Warricomb the sincerity of Peak's beliefs and the compatibilty of religious traditionalism with scientific modernism. Peak is interested in Warricomb's daughter, Sidwell, lovely and reserved and religiously traditional and unadventurous. At first, Sidwell is something of a stand-in for class, rather than a person Peak loves for herself. As the story develops, Peak seems to develop something of a genuine love for Sidwell. And oddly, Sidwell comes to love Peak.

Peak lives with tension in his pursuit because he knows he is practicing deceit and living a lie. He is ashamed of doing so. Ultimately the truth comes out when Sidwell's brother Buckland, an old Whitelaw friend, discovers that Peak was the author of the anonymous article "The New Sophistry" which condemned efforts to reconcile religion and science. Buckland is himself a skeptic whose views are rough and not deeply considered but still are similar to Peak's and to modernity. Buckland has found his way to Peak's former small group of friends in London who are amazed that Peak is trying to pass himself off as a prospective clergyman. Buckland confronts Peak with what he has learned and tells Sidwell and Martin. Peak is disgraced and must leave Exeter. Even though she knows the truth, Sidwell still loves Peak. Her own religious and moral views have broadend under their acquaintance to something approaching free thought. Sidwell has achieved a substantial intellectual independence from her family and background. Before Peak leaves, the door is left open that they will marry if Peak establishes himself.

Peak is miserable and lonely but he receives a bequest from an intellectual woman, Marcella Moxey, who unreciprocatedly had long loved him. With his financial future secured, Peak writes Sidwell a love letter, the first time he has opened himself up, proposing marriage. After much anguish, Sidwell rejects Peak and terminates the relationship. For all her intellectual change, Sidwell finds she cannot leave her family and its estate. Rootless and alone, Peak sets out for travel on the continent where he apparently lives the short life of a rake, contacts a disease, and dies homeless and alone.

"Born in Exile" is a study of a modern type, an intelligent, rootless, and confusedly amoral individual, in the dress of late Victorianism. The novel explores the loss of traditional religious faith and the lack of any apparent standards to replace it. Gissing, himself a nonbeliever, did not see humanism, social activism, or other nostrums as providing an adequate substitute for religion. Hence his novels, particularly this one, have a pessimistic philosophical cast.

The book is long, with extensive passages of wordy dialogue and of introspective commentary, both of which are typical to Gissing. Other than the masterful portrayal of Peak, and to some extent the characterization and growth of Sidwell Warricomb, none of the other of the many characters and scenes are well-developed. It takes perseverance to read this book. For interested readers, perseverance will be richly rewarded. Although never likely to become popular, "Born in Exile" is a troubling and deeply perceptive philosophical exploration of modernity. Unfortunately, this book appears out of print. It richly deserves a new edition. I read this book in a Harvester Press edition from the mid-1980s with an introduction by the Gissing scholar Gillian Tindall.

Saving a Kidnapped Russian Princess from a Rambling Mansion -- Part Dated But Enjoyable Adventure Tale

A lesser known John Buchan work, 'Huntingtower' (published in 1922) is still a very enjoyable adventure book in which a most unlikely person in the world of fiction plays the central role. He is Dickeson McCunn, newly retired gorcery shop owner, whose life has been very 'respectable.' Now, free from his business (and his wife being away from home), Dickson leaves the city to spend time walking in the countryside of Scotland.

But while visiting the village called Dalquharter, Dickson meets a young English poet Mr. Heritage, who tries to convince him that in the ruined mansion Huntingtower, a young woman is held against her will, and the poet claims that he knows her personally. Moreover, Heritage believes that the woman is a Russian princess. Unconvinced, Dickson refuses to take part in his 'rescue' plans ... at first.

The plot is vintage Buchan, with lots of actions (exciting and incredible ones), plus well-observed descritions of characters. Dickson is not as active or heroic as Richard Hannay, but the situation is similar to that of 'The Thirty-Nine Steps.' The difference is inclusion of historical references to the post-revolution Russia, and 'the Gorbals Die-Hards,' group of local kids who assist the jobs of Dickson. The colorful Scottish background is also attarctive.

The book is a thriller, but unlike 'Greenmantle,' it is not political. It's more like reading Scott or Stevenson, with sly and often comical commentary to the contemporary social situations here and there, such as deft description of one boy who recounts his experience joining in sociliast's meeting, thinking that it's a football club. And of course, Russian princess reminds us of the legend of Anastasia.

The book fails to be convincing when it tries to show the 'villains' who are only stock characters, and the idea of putting a respectable middle-class Glassgow grocery store owner does not work in the latter half of the book, in which Dickson McCunn is less interesting presence than the 'Die-Hards.' And you probably don't like the book's occasional derogatory commentary on certain group (especially Jewish people). Some of the values here are those of the 1920s, and they are clearly dated.

But the actions and the characters (if not all) are still good, and the narrator draws vivid sketches of people with clever and pithy wording. The catalogue of people Dickson meets on the road (including Heritage) is all lively, and the entire mood of the book is surprisingly optimistic. The book is readable and entertaining in a different way than Buchan's spy novels.

Romanticism vs Realism

Huntingtower is a rare book and a pleasure to read. On one level it's a gripping adventure story. On another level it's a vindication of the overlooked characters of the thriller-world. The heroes here aren't soldiers, aren't highly-trained spies, aren't adventurers. They are a married, middle-aged grocer; an old lady; a gang of indomitable street-kids; a cynical poet; and a gang of disabled soldiers. And there's a dispossessed Russian princess-turned-spy in there, too, with a dispossessed Russian prince.

On another level the tale's pure allegory--about the Realist (the cynical poet) and the Romanticist (the grocer) stumbling upon a slice of real adventure and finding out that it's nothing like either of them expected. It's a vindication of fairy-tales (there's a princess in a tower!) and a judgement of thoughtless sentimentalism.

But all those levels work together to make up an often funny, often moving, surprisingly candid adventure through a Scotland lovingly evoked--yet another of Buchan's unusual tales.

Delightful

A very enjoyable escape, adventuring with a recently-retired grocer and his assorted acquaintances. Humorous, self-deprecating, and satisfying. Reading can be a muckle challenging, due to the Scottish dialect, but if you can get unto the swing of it, it just adds to the charm of the experience. Not to be missed!
