Book club pick

Blink Once to Spread Snow was a book club selection this month in my small town. All nine of us liked the book. The descriptions the author wrote just helped us have a clear picture of everything. There seemed to be a lot of detail, but it was all needed to understand the characters. I loved the character of Cal. I loved his wife, Alice. Cal had many experiences in his life and we could see what a strong, good man he was, and how he valued his relationships with others. The more I read, the more I wanted to read. There were actually many little stories woven together to create the whole story. The reader got to know more about Cal than perhaps any of the people in his family. It is a memorable book. As I shared my favorite parts of the book with my friends, they all remembered those parts of the story too. I'm glad I read this book. You should too.

An amazingly powerful and unique book!

An excellent read! One would think that a story that jumps back and forth from the present to the depression, to the present, to WWII, to the present, to the 1980s, etc. would be difficult to follow. One would also think that a novel that will teach you more about history than you've forgotten from all of high school would get tedious. However, this book is neither of these; and in fact these factors (combined with its unforgettable characters) are its strong points, making it a fascinating and unique story, and one that will you will have difficulty putting down. (You also might find yourself proudly recounting some of its painstakingly researched historical details to your friends as if you've known this stuff your whole life!) I have read it three times now, and have thoroughly enjoyed it every time.

Love the twist!

Excellent story of how bad things can get if we don't cherish our freedom! The book uses irony well, using the south as the place that protects freedom for all--even former slaves--and the north as the oppressive totalitarian state in this alternate history. Many might think this romanticizes the old South, but nothing is further from the truth in this book. You can argue with the way things might have turned out if the South won the Civil War, but the ideas portrayed wouldn't change: freedom for all is a thing we need to protect!

Only an author with her roots in South Wales could bring so much warmth and realism into her characters. Tiger Ragtime is not a heavyweight novel; it is a light, easy read that manages to tackle racial prejudice, human greed and social deprivation within the confines of Tiger Bay in the 1930s. Judy, a young singer, dreams of becoming a star, but until the arrival of business man Aled James she has been cocooned from racial discrimination by the multi-faceted mix within the dockland community. Now she finds herself suddenly aware that there are places where her colour is not acceptable. David, young and strong-willed, leaves the farming estate which, as the eldest son, he will inherit, in order to go to sea. After an ordeal that nearly kills him, he finds a job as a bookie's runner for Aled James, which brings him into contact with the law. Aled James is a man with a mission who, having left the Bay and made his fortune in America, comes back to Cardiff to set up a casino. Harry, David's brother-in-law and Aled's half-brother, whose wealth comes from a personal inheritance, together with other colourful characters, fascinate the reader, as their lives become intricately interwoven in a story that later takes us through a turf war that emerges when Aled refuses to be intimidated by those who already rule the area with their protection racket. About the Author
Catrin Collier is Wales' most prolific and well-known author of historical, romantic fictions. The daughter of a Prussian refugee and Welsh father, she grew up in Pontypridd. She has written 19 novels for Orion. Her first historical novel Hearts of Gold, was filmed as a mini-series by the BBC in 2003. She lives with her family on the Gower Peninsula, near Swansea. Great read!

All of the Catrin Collier series are terrific stories set in quaint towns in England. The author grew up in one of the settings & much of the happenings in the story are based on historical facts she either witnessed or heard about through her family & friends. The character's lives are witnessed by the reader & their oftentimes raw emotions shared. Very entertaining. I definitely recommend them all.

Terrible Typesetting and Messy Production

This is a classic book, but this particular edition looks like it was printed on-demand by someone who has no familiarity with the work and is just putting this out there to grab orders for a public domain book.

The type-setting is awful - like someone just clicked "print" on a pdf of the text. The cover art is of a Union Army!

From a book-lover's perspective, this printing is a mess. I'm throwing it in the trash and going somewhere to find a hardback edition.

About the Author
Although born in England in 1768, Maria Edgeworth was raised in Ireland from a young age after the death of her mother. After nearly losing her sight at age fourteen, Edgeworth was tutored at home by her father, helping to run their estate and taking charge of her younger siblings. Over the course of her life she collaborated and published books with her father, and produced many more of her own adult and children s works, including such classics as Castle Rackrent, Patronage, Belinda, Ormond and The Absentee. Edgeworth spent her entire life on the family estate, but kept up friendships and correspondences with her contemporaries Sir Walter Scott and Lord Byron, and her writing had a profound influence upon Jane Austen and William Makepeace Thackeray. Edgeworth was outspoken on the issues of poverty, women s rights, and racial inequalities. During the beginnings of famine in Ireland, Edgeworth worked in relief and support of the sick and destitute. She died in 1849 at the age of 81.
