The book has a perfect story line and characters were so interesting. On the other hand, as far as I know it is the first book about medieval eastern fiction which I found perfectly described. I recommend to everyone... Good job...

Great Book

Woww. I mean that was something I was waiting for and found it from a different source. There is nothing boring in chapters, always green.
Especially poems, that was tasteful for a reader.
I loved the main characters' dilemma and the fiction was just great and balanced.
History, literature and fantasy factors were just great and coherent.

Highly recommend to everyone who likes fantasy and sword&magic.

English country house mystery for the holidays

On New Year's Eve, 1942, James Paradine has just discovered the theft of some important blueprints from his office. Calling in Elliot Wray - not only his junior in the firm, but the estranged husband of his adopted niece Phyllida - James orders him to come to dinner that evening. This New Year will ring in not only with espionage, but a confrontation between Elliot, Phyllida, and Phyllida's guardian, James' sister Grace, who runs James' household - as good a recipe for disaster as one could hope for in a month of Sundays.
So why is James acting like the cat who got the canary?
James certainly seems to be taking a malicious pleasure in *something*, but the stolen plans aren't anything to laugh about - and when he makes a formal toast to the family party over dinner, speaking of family loyalty and inviting an unnamed party to confess to something, he really puts a cat among the pigeons: Albert Pearson, distant cousin, perfect secretary, and young to be such a crashing bore; James' solid nephew Frank Ambrose; Frank's wife Irene, fretting herself into premature middle-age over her children (and being helped along by Grace); Frank's bossy sister Brenda, who feels put upon about sharing the running of his house; Irene's flamboyant, cheerful sister Lydia, who takes Irene as a awful warning, and provides a leavening of sense in the Grace-admiration society; cousin Dick Paradine, continually working on getting Lydia to the altar; and Mike, who's hopelessly in love with Lydia, and would rather be in China than at the family dinner. Last, but not least, Phyllida Wray, who left Elliot Wray a year ago only to fall back into the smothering clutches of Grace Paradine.
All in all, not a good group to taunt with an ambiguous accusation and an urge to confession - who knows what might come out. Half the family appears to have visited his study at some point in the evening, and apparently James got more than he bargained for; he's found dead, fallen from the terrace outside his study. Mike, as his heir, falls immediately under suspicion. But Maud Silver, governess-turned-PI, is spending Christmas with her favourite niece nearby - and of all people, the flamboyant Lydia turns out to have met her, and calls her in to tell the truth and shame the devil - no matter what devil turns out to have been the murderer.

Miss Silver at her best

It's time for old scores to be settled and conflicts to be resolved. Mr. James Paradine has laid down the gauntlet to his family and someone has killed him. With two love stories (Elliot Wray and Phillida and Mark and Lydia) and everyone there suspect, Miss Silver unravels the mess and the answer is the twist that Wentworth loves to give us. This is one of my favorites.

One of my favourite Wentworth cozies.

This is one of her war era tales and it's a great one. Evil relations, money, intrigue, a murder, romance, a country house party AND romance! Just after the clock strikes twelve, to ring in a new year, somebody is murdered.

I suggest reading this one at Christmas, especially if family is getting on your last nerve! You'll appreciate them better when compared to the decedent and HIS family!!! Bad people get their comeuppance via the impressive brain of our real heroine, Miss Maude Silver and her mighty knitting needles. In the end all impediments to true love are bulldozed out of the path of the young lovers by Maudie the Magnificent and all is well in the English countryside yet again.

Although in Jane Austin’s world everyone was characterized according to the class system. In the new world of the USA the class system is less defined. Marion’s father has sent her to the Academy hoping to curve some of her impetuousness, a quality he assumes will not help her find a husband.
Marion has a strong family and ranch foundation, she needs to use this knowledge and trust that God is guiding her life to find the right man to love.
Marion’s dilemma is one of fancy versus practical. Mr. Whelp is handsome and young versus older and injured Mr. Tabor. Marion is nineteen and ready to find love and marry. Her heart pulls her toward a fancy, young and handsome man rather than a battered Texas Ranger. She must determine if fancy Mr. Whelp’s inside strength and outside strength are equal because whoever she chooses will one day inherit all of her father’s land.
Draper shows the reader life explained through nature. For example: “With her palms on her cheeks, she prayed all evidence of the incident would fade as fast as the ripples had disappeared into the creek.” Another nice example of ranch life explaining life, happens when foreman Tabor, breaks a horse using cooperation rather than submission. Marion concludes this is similar to love and marriage.
This novella is well-written and draws you into Marion’s life because you want her to choose the right man to be beside her for the rest of her life. Draper provides a scheming surprise near the end to bring about the story’s resolution.

Loved the Hero!

This charming novella is chock-full of the things I love most about western romances. Brandon Tabor, a Texas Ranger with the battle wounds to prove it, is strong and true to both his word and ethics. I loved that about him. Marion McDermott is young and impressionable, yet she’s not a naïve miss who shirks responsibility for her choices, especially the choice to allow an opportunistic ranch hand to court her.

The story is based on Jane Austen’s Sense & Sensibility. That’s my favorite Jane Austen book, but you don’t need to be an Austen aficionado to appreciate the story. Nor do you need to read the other stories in the anthology to enjoy the romance between Brandon and Marion. The novella stands alone and it stands strong. No spoilers, but I thoroughly enjoyed the clever ending.

Recommended for readers who enjoy western romance, fast-paced novellas, wounded heroes, Texas Rangers, and “surprised by love” stories. Enjoy! P.S. I purchased the entire anthology via Kindle.

Good ole fashioned read.

What a fun story. I loved the lightheartedness of Marianne aka Marion, her love of fun, her impulsiveness. But she also learns from others and listens to Godtraits I can learn from myself. 
I love a wounded hero, and Brandon fills that title well. A true gentleman, I much enjoyed reading his point of view and seeing his heart for God. He treats others with integrity and respect, a lovely change from what is often portrayed around me in society. 
I heartily recommend "Romantic Refinements by Anita Mae Draper, part of the Austen in Austin collection. Pour yourself a cup of Earl Grey tea and snuggle up with this good old fashioned read. :)

I bet no one reads this, but I'm writing it anyway

Jeffrey Farnol is not much remembered, but he seems to have been popular at the time he was writing. I read this book because I heard that Farnol was an important influence on Jack Vance, a science fiction writer I like.
This book concerns Barnabas, a young (about 22) son of an English innkeeper who inherits a substantial fortune. He decides to try to join London's fashionable world, and has some success for a while. He becomes friends with a Viscount, has a stumbling romance with a Lady, gets into tons of fistfights, does some horse racing. Eventually, it is discovered that he is only an innkeeper's son, though, and he loses his place in the fashionable world. I think you get the idea.
The first part of the book went slowly, and so did the last part. The middle was more interesting to read. Overall, the book was well written and enjoyable.

This is the first book I have read from this author. I was interested in reading a Regency book written by a male author.

The young Barnabas has just inherited a vast sum of money after his uncle's death. He wishes to become a gentleman so he heads to London but meets some interesting individuals on the way.

Clean and light romance. An entertaining read.

Great story about coming of age, falling in love and making goog on it all..I enjoy Jeff Farnol for his description of how the characters feel and the classic romantic perspective. A really diverting and engaging read. Couldn't put it down.

About the Author
There's a saying when one door closes a window opens and that's what it was like for Ann. When the newspaper where she worked closed, she turned her back on the city, and headed off to the Australian outback as a governess. The cattle station where she tutored three young girls was close to the Carnarvon tracking station built by NASA for the Gemini program. Wheels turned and she began writing a thriller about the International Space Station. Ann Massey is the author of three successful novels. Her books draw on different literary traditions. She calls them square-pegs because they don’t fit neatly into a specific genre slot. Her new release, The Little Dog Laughed is a whimsical historical fantasy set in Roman-occupied Briton. As a schoolgirl, Ann was a great fan of the Regency romances of Georgette Heyer, and it was inevitable that she would one day write a novel with a heroine disguised as a boy. Ann Holds a degree in teaching and currently teaches English literature. Outside of teaching she worked in the newspaper industry as a sub-editor and marketing manager. She won the prestigious INMA marketing award in 1986. After living in England and Borneo, she now resides in the seaside suburb of Quinns Rocks in Western Australia.

Brilliant! Matching imagination with history to produce a great read.

The Little Dog Laughed is like no other book that I have ever read. Saying it’s out of left field doesn’t cut it. It’s off the planet.

The author has a remarkable imagination (think Stephen King without the extreme horror) and has conjured up a story about a delightful little Jack Russell (Spartacus or Sparky to his friends), an accidental time machine, two septuagenarians who rediscover their youth, and history when Boadicea battled the Romans and Rome’s most feared general, Suetonius Paulinus.

This book has humor, romance, history and violence all rolled up into one incredible tale. It’s an easy, very enjoyable, fun read. Highly recommended.

Extraordinary and delightful feat of imaginative writing

It isn't often that I actually chuckle, laugh, or otherwise make sounds of delight when I read a book. The Little Dog Laughed is a rare exception, as some passengers on last week's flight JQ516 from Melbourne to Sydney might attest. I was dazzled by Ann Massey's repertoire of wit, irony and outright comedy in this time travel story of Reggie and Ennis, and their intrepid dog Sparky. The author combines a wealth of knowledge about love, dog psychology, Latin, and Roman history in a stylistically deft novel that defies genre categorisation. Congratulations and thanks for the pleasure!

A five-star reward for this story! The Little Dog Laughed has it all - time travel, history, suspense, comedy, romance, and a cute little dog. This is a time-travel romp that begins in Australia then takes the reader to Roman-occupied Britannia 61AD. This is a story of a courageous woman - Regina Barbaria - who matches wits and skills with Queen Boudica (queen of the British Iceni tribe), Gaius Suetonius Paulinus (Roman general, defeater of the rebellion of Boudica), Ennis Price (a bitter invalid who subjects Regina to his cruelty), and Sparky (a grudge-holding terrier dog). You will laugh, you will learn history, and you will root for the happily-ever-after for some of these characters.
