With Fire and Sword: An Historical Novel of Poland and Russia, by Henryk Sienkiewicz

At a time when the state of Poland was constantly undergoing political turmoil, Henryk Sienkiewicz wasn’t afraid to ruffle feathers. Having already achieved success in his career around the end of the 19th century, the Polish journalist negatively portrayed the Teutonic Order at a time in which his audience lived under German rule. At the same time, he meticulously included historical language in his works, a sort of celebration of authenticity and the past. He would earn a Nobel Prize in 1905 for "outstanding merits as an epic writer." Sienkiewicz mastered historical novels that vividly put readers in places as distinct as 17th century Poland and Ancient Rome. He is still well regarded today for novels like With Fire and Sword, The Deluge, Quo Vadis, and Fire in the Steppe.

Epic.
By Karl Janssen
With Fire and Sword is a sweeping, romantic, historical epic, originally published in 1884 by Nobel Prize-winner Henryk Sienkiewicz. Though little read by American audiences, this book deserves a place of honor alongside such classics as The Three Musketeers, War and Peace, Doctor Zhivago, and Les Miserables. The opening chapters required a little historical research just to figure out what was going on, but once I got my bearings it was a great ride.

The story begins in 1647, and takes place mostly in the Ukraine, which was part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, at that time the most powerful nation in Europe. The novel follows the events of the Hmelnitski Uprising (This review is based on Jeremiah Curtin's English translation, so I'm using his spellings of proper nouns). Bogdan Hmelnitski led a Cossack Revolt against the Commonwealth, with the aid of the Tartars (Muslims from the Crimea). Pan Yan Skshetuski is a lieutenant in the Commonwealth forces led by Prince Yeremi. Shortly before the uprising Yan meets the love of his life, Princess Helena. As the fighting breaks out they are separated and spend most of the novel trying to get back together. One major obstacle to their reunion is Bogun, a fierce and powerful Cossack leader who also loves Helena, and takes her captive. Pan Yan has three comrades-in-arms: Pan Michal Volodyovski, Pan Longin Podbipienta, and Pan Zagloba. These four soldiers display a friendship similar to the four comrades of The Three Musketeers, with Zagloba providing most of the comic relief.

If there's a weakness to this book it's the plotting. The great adventure classics by Hugo or Dumas are intricately crafted so that each chapter is crucial to pushing the story forward. With Fire and Sword feels like it has quite a bit of filler. There are several chapters of the heroes drinking and talking about how they should all go look for the princess, but very few chapters of the heroes actually looking for the princess. About six instances occur of characters coincidentally running into Bogun, when two probably would've sufficed. Despite these few low points, the book overall is very exciting, and filled with memorable characters and events.

This novel contains some of the most vivid and gruesome depictions of warfare ever written. If they gave a prize for most impalements in a novel, Sienkiewicz would surely have won it with this entry. Atrocities are committed by both sides, beheadings are commonplace, and the torture of prisoners is routine. At one point, as the Commonwealth forces are approaching a town of particularly rebellious peasants, Yeremi instructs his soldiers to "Kill them so that they know they are dying," a philosophy that permeates the book. I don't want to make it sound like it's all blood and guts; Sienkiewicz also shows us the political intrigue behind the military strategy. And let's not forget, this is, after all, a love story.

This is the first book in a trilogy of historical novels by Sienkiewicz. The second volume is The Deluge (aka Potop), and the third is Fire in the Steppe (aka Pan Wolodjowski). After reading the first book, I can't wait to tackle the other two.

A must read!
By Ivan Kinsman
For any lover of Polish history, this is the first book of Sienkiewicz's Trilogy series (the other two being The Deluge and Pan Wo'odyjowski or The Fire in the Steppe).

This historical novel traces the fortunes of the Poles and Lithuanians living on the eastern borders on The Commonwealth (Poland and Lithuania) as they meet the assault of the Cossacks from the Ukraine, who have combined with the Tartars (led by Tugai Bey) and later the Mongols (led by the Khan) in a national uprising against their Polish overlords. Their force is commanded by Hmelnitski, the leader of the Zaporojian army.

The leading figures amongst the Poles are Prince Yeremi Vishnyevetski, who lives with his entourage at Lubni. He is ably assisted by Jan Skrzetuski (based on Mikolaj Skrzetuski), Jan Onufry Zagloba, Michal Wolodyjowski (based on Jerzy Wolodyjowski) and the immensely strong but mild-mannered Lithuanian, Longinus Podbipi'ta. Together they have to defend the Commonwealth from this assault with only a small force of battle-hardened knights. They are forced to make a last stand at Zbaraj, lacking assistance from the King and General Militia owing to internal squabbles and prevarication in Greater Poland, but hold out nobly until relief finally reaches them.

Intertwined in the plot is the love affair of Jan Skrzetuski and Helena Kurcewiczówna. They fall in love at the beginning of the novel and, after many trials and tribulations - many the result of the actions undertaken by Skrzetuski's sworn Cossack enemy, Yuri Bogun - they are finally reunited.

Story 5 Stars!!! Translation 0 Stars!!! ... Be careful when buying any Henryk Sienkiewicz books translated into English. His writings are truly wonderful, however Polish language is extremely difficult to translate properly. Jeremiah Curtin in the late 1800's and early 1900's tried to translate them into English and he tried to do it word for word. One cannot translate Polish into English word for word. It just doesn't make sense. Copyright on any of the books translated by Mr. Curtin have expired, so anyone can publish them, unfortunately they don't do any justice to Henryk's writings. Again, the stories are absolutely fabulous, but I highly recommend to get the most current translations, by a quality translator. ... To the publisher: Please, please publish the current translations of H. Sienkiewicz writings. I am sure you would sell a lot more of them and make more money, even after the royalties are paid to the translators.

Still controversial after all these years
By Richard Ferrie
Critics of Wilkie Collins like to say that his later novels are overly didactic and indicate signs of increased drug use. HEART AND SCIENCE is one of those usually so labeled. Because it is an anti-vivisection novel, perhaps the foremost of the 19th century, it is regarded by some (especially those who think that an experiment is stronger if a thousand animals are killed in the process rather than, say, a mere hundred) and often dismissed as sentimental and therefore second-rate. This is hardly the case. HEART AND SCIENCE is a strong, well-structured novel with good characterization and coherent development; unfortunately, Collins decided readers would only purchase the book if the primary plot involved a love story. Perhaps overly-romantic, yes; sentimental, no. While THE MOONSTONE remains Collins' masterpiece, one of the finest pop-to-literature cross-over novels in English, HEART AND SCIENCE deserves to be considered one of the author's best.

A Wonderful Story of Love and Heroism
By Ellen Coker
I read this book while I was at my Grandfather's house and have been looking for a copy ever since. It is a wonderful story about a young man who fights under George Washington in the French and Indian War. His parents were poor and when they died he went to live with some rich relatives whose daughter he fell in love with. It ends with a breath-taking battle to save his love and her mother from Indians. I would recomend this book to anyone!

About the Author
Henry James (1843-1916), American novelist and critic, was an innovator in technique and a distinctive prose stylist. More than any previous writer, James refined the technique of narrating a novel from the point of view of a character, thereby laying the foundations of modern stream-of-consciousness fiction. Among his many acclaimed novels are "The Portrait of a Lady, The Ambassadors, The Golden Bowl, "and "The Wings of the Dove.".

Good Vibes!?!
By Gio
The 'Reverberator' is not, as some readers might feverishly suppose, a hand-held device for erotic auto-stimulation, nor is it one of those fashionable quivery armchairs. No, it's the name on the masthead of an American tabloid, a racy gossip sheet, for which Mr. George Flack is the Parisian correspondent. The only vibrations you'll experience while reading this 1888 novella will be the shaking of your sides at Henry James's wry satire. Mr. Flack is the driving anti-hero of this tale, a prophetic verbal 'paparazzo' of sensationalist journalism, a man with a vision of the vulgar times we have to admit to be ours; speaking to a young woman he hopes to impress, he says: "You ain't going to be able any longer to monopolize any fact of general interest, and it ain't going to be right you should; it ain't going to be possible to keep out anywhere the light of the Press... We'll see who's private then, and whose hands are off, and who'll frustrate the people -- the People that wants to know. That's a sign of the American people that they do want to know..." Mr Flack is the obnoxious harbinger of People Magazine, and of the politics of exposé and outright defamations that degrades American democracy today. The changing societal modes of privacy versus publicity are central themes of the two novellas James published together in his mid career, "The Reverberator" and "A London Life".

All the principal characters of The Reverberator are Americans in Paris. Mr. Flack's object of admiration is the winsome Francie Dosson, in Paris with her plain but ambitious older sister Delia and their wealthy retired father. The Dossons, to put it plainly, are rubes. Mr. Dosson is as culturally and intellectually blank as John Locke's slate; his only claim to any specific personhood has been his knack for making money through investments. Delia is 'horridly' declassé, vulgar to her toes. Francie is unaccountably beautiful and graceful, but she is exactly what modern observers would call an "airhead". Flack introduces her to yet another American in Paris, the 'rising' impressionist painter Waterlow, for whom Francie agrees to pose though she finds his paintings bizarre. At Waterlow's studio, another 'American' enters the story: Gaston Probert, the scion of a Catholic family that migrated to France from the Carolinas in flight from abolition and democracy. The Proberts have wealth, still based in America, and have married into the staunchly reactionary French Legitimist aristocracy. They are the stiffest of snobs, but young Gaston is at sea over his own identity, unsure of his true national character and of his manly worth on the terms of either culture. Each character in this novella is simultaneously a stinging caricature and yet a perfectly plausible individual. The romantic tussle that results from their chance encounter reveals each of them to be exactly who they seem, even when they aren't quite capable of knowing themselves.

The Reverberator is a brilliant study of characters and a well-paced comic tale. Henry James's wit, to be sure, often takes the form of syntactical feints and pirouettes. Ah reckin thet sorta wit ain't fer ev'body ... and perhaps this accounts for the diffuse prejudice among readers today that James is a 'difficult' writer, more work than play. It's not so. "The Reverberator" and its companion "A London Life" are highly entertaining, even as they dig psychologically under the surface of ordinary human relations.

Yes, there is such a thing as bad publicity.
By mojosmom
In our time, socialites, celebrities and people "famous for being famous" hire publicists and are content to have their private lives made fodder for the public press. Indeed, they are often complicit in the revelation of the most intimate details of their lives and seem to agree with the saying that "no publicity is bad publicity".

Henry James would be shocked. Simon Nowell-Smith points out in his introduction to my edition of this novel James' reaction to a public report of a private conversation between Julian Hawthorne and James Russell Lowell; he called it a "beastly and blackguardly betrayal". But he took an incident in which a young American who had been admitted into Venetian society wrote an account of that society for a New York newspaper, and was widely excoriated in Venice for so doing, and turned it into this charming novel.

The Dossons, father and two daughters, serious Delia and flighty Francie, are Americans in Paris. Coming over, they had made the acquaintance of George Flack, a journalist whose job is to find stories for an American 'society-paper'. He has attached himself to the Dossons, showing them Paris, while smoking Mr. Dosson's cigars, spending his money, and having a flirtation with Francie. He introduces her to the expatriate Impressionist portraitist, Charles Waterlow (possibly based on John Singer Sargent?) who begins to paint her portrait. During the sittings, she meets a young man, Gaston Probert, an American who had never been in America, having been born and raised in France, his father a "Gallomaniac", his sisters having married into French society (two into the nobility). Inevitably, Francie and Gaston fall in love, and, after her charm overcomes some familial objections of the Proberts, they become engaged.

All is going swimmingly, Francie is taken into the bosom of the Proberts, learning the ways of French society, until Gaston heads to the United States to take care of some business for his family, as well as for Mr. Dosson. While he is away, George Flack re-appears. One lesson Francie has not learned is that a young engaged woman does not go out alone with a young man who is not her betrothed. But she takes the view that Flack is an old acquaintance and what's the harm? The harm turns out to be that he, by judicious questioning and saying he merely wants to write about Waterlow's painting of her, sets her chattering about her fiancé's family, and the resultant newspaper story causes a storm. Francie still cannot quite understand the harm she has done. "I thought he would just speak about my being engaged and give a little account; so many people in America would be interested." What she doesn't grasp is that the Proberts do not want "people in America" (or France, for that matter) to be interested in their private lives.

"The Reverberator" was first written as a serial in early 1888, and published in book form shortly thereafter. James extensively revised it twenty years later, but my edition is that of the 1888 book. Nowell-Smith's introduction, which compares this and the later edition, shows that the revisions were not an improvement! The ease of language here, very different from James' later "tortuosity of expression", perfectly expresses the wide-eyed naïveté of Francie.

Flatliners
By H. Schneider
She seemed to be doing nothing as hard as she could.

The problem with this short novel from the 1880s is that there are no real people in it, only shadow lines of 2 dimensions. Between two fat novels (Princess Casamassima and Tragic Muse), James apparently felt obliged (publisher's pressure?) to produce something shorter and funnier. He did and some readers have liked it, but I can't quite warm up to it.

Usually, James' strength was in his psychological finesse, which could make me see an interest in people and problems that I might otherwise ignore. He does not achieve that here. Also, in general I like his shorter pieces better, but Francie and Gaston have left me cold. James' women are a subject of their own, and there is a lot of variation among them, but I can't remember any heroine as uninteresting as Francie. Nor any main male as boring as Gaston.

We have an encounter of 2 families in Paris, both of American origin, both, oddly, without mother. A wealthy man from Boston travels Europe with 2 daughters, a bossy but ugly one and a pretty but mindless one. A Frenchified resident family, whose wealth is based on property in Carolina, consists of a snobbish aging father, a do-nothing son, and 3 daughters married to various French aristocrats.

The do-nothing son and the pretty but mentally flat daughter get entangled, but even that happens without much excitement. The excitement comes from a slip by the girl: she tells some family secrets to a failed suitor who works for an American scandal press product. That complicates things for a while, as the yellow press usually will. If the yellow press were more in the forefront of the story, the novel might be more interesting. As it is, I can't find it very funny.

Three Tyrannies, by S. Kent Olson

In the spring of 1854, Anton Narvik was burdened with a family secret.  Fugitives were hiding in a coulee valley on their Grant County, Wisconsin farm, only five miles from the Mississippi River. Who those people were, and what they represented would change the course of the fourteen-year-old's life.  It would change the way he saw the world and its hypocrisies.  He would learn the differences between justice stated and justice rendered. He would learn steadfastness and kindness... and rage - primal rage, which he would unleash first in those valley confines and then in a great nation-defining civil war.  But before all that, on that first warm spring morning, he would meet a girl unlike any other.

I heartily recommend this book to those who love history
By tennisguy
An exciting, intriguing, historical novel, that includes many adventures, a complex inter-racial romance, and civil war battles. The author cleverly weaves all of these elements together, through the book's hero, a Wisconsin Norwegian farm boy, who grew up in the 1850's, and endured phenomenal hardships during the civil war. The hero developed his own view of the issues at stake during the war, and did his utmost to treat both sides, and both races, with a keen sense of justice and fair play.

The reader will learn a tremendous amount about life during that time in the midwest, and the U.S., and will be rewarded with creative story-telling that is both amusing and philosophical. I heartily recommend this book to those who love history, adventures, and wonderfully creative stories.

Me & You Again, by Fraser Balaam

Curious, Fraser Balaam opened the box. It was full of documents addressed to his dad.

Keith Balaam was an opportunistic bloke who did things. Between 1994 and 2000, he volunteered in Russia, wrote a book, helped set up a popular website and had an organ transplant. Then, in 2001, he died aged 47. Too young.

When Fraser was growing up he used to daydream about the stories his dad might share if they had a drink together. For years the daydream was enough for him, but over time he realised that it only left him with the basic version of every story. He didn't know the background, or the why behind every what.

That was until he opened the box. When he read the documents inside, he picked up the phone and booked some flights. Things started to sharpen in view.

Me & You Again is the brief and frantic story of what can happen when you get carried away filling the space between memories, and how getting to know someone can take you all over the world.

A fascinating true story
By Jon-Paul Beaumont
A fascinating true story of a son trying to figure out what his Dad was really like. It takes the reader on an incredibe journey of mixed emotions. Its heartwarming, delicate, adventurous and funny but ultimately heartbreaking. Its a book that at various points made me smile, laugh, feel nostaligic and even cry.

The way Fraser describes his journeys to Russia and Southern America are beautiul, while his anetdotes are funny.

The actual process of contacting his Father's past friends and the journey that unfolds as a result is fascinating. His Dad really lived a remarkable life and this book is a fitting tribute.

Despite the heartbreaking end, its a book that confirms the strength and beauty of family bonds and friendships. Perhaps its time to make that phone call you've been meaning to make...
