The Censor, by John Gardner

It is the late 1960s and David Askelon, an American writer, has written a best-seller - a book that is popular for its graphic and violent sexual scenes.

And now an English publisher has paid a great deal to publish in the UK.

But they have decided they want to heavily censor the book.

Looking of the list of changes, Askelon puts his foot down.

The whole point of his novel was to portray the world realistically, in all its gritty, sordid and disturbing glory.

So he decides to head to London to put his point across in person.

He manages to persuade the publishers that the book needs to stay as it is, but how will the ‘powers that be’ react?

Could he - or his publishers - face a fine, or even prosecution?

As the publication date looms ever nearer he finds himself caught up in a whirlwind of publicity - not all of it good…

How will the English public react to the novel?

Will it receive critical acclaim - or should he have listened to The Censor?

Praise for John Gardner:

`Rich in intricacy, ingenuity and intrigue' - Sunday Times

`Neat thriller.' - Times Literary Supplement

`A good old-fashioned absorbing read.' - Good Housekeeping

Before coming an author of fiction in the early 1960’s John Gardner was variously a stage magician, a Royal Marine officer and a journalist. In all Gardner has fifty-four novels to his credit, including Maestro, which was the New York Times book of the year. He was also invited by Ian Fleming’s literary copyright holders to write a series of continuation James Bond novels, which proved to be so successful that instead of the contracted three books he went on to publish some fourteen titles, including Licence Renewed and Icebreaker. Having lived in the Republic of Ireland, the United States and the UK, John Gardner sadly died in August of 2007 having just completed his third novel in the Moriarty trilogy, Conan Doyle’s eponymous villain of the Sherlock Holmes series.

Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent publisher of digital books.

Shut Up, He Explained...
By M. Buzalka
The Censor (1970) was one of John Gardner’s early attempts to break away from his successful Boysie Oakes series, which was nearing its expiration date at this point anyway (the penultimate Boysie book, The Airline Pirates, came out around the same time and definitely showed signs that Gardner was getting tired of the character).

The plot concerns the publication of a supposedly brilliant novel that is also quite “dirty” in its graphic presentation of extreme violence and explicit sex. It is a big hit in the U.S. and a small British publishing house has won the right to put it out in Britain. Unfortunately, there is still a censorship provision on the books and a puritanical British peer decides to force prosecution under that statute. If he’s successful, the publishing house would be ruined, though the author, already independently wealthy and a success in the much larger American market, would only have his ego damaged.

That’s not a bad premise for some suspense except that the argument for censorship is so ridiculous and anachronistic that it’s hard to take it seriously even if the characters do. There’s also a romantic triangle subplot that serves only to detract from the main issue, while another subplot involving the wife of the peer has potential except that it reeks of high school level Freudianism and is resolved with a scene whose preposterousness is only exceeded by its sentimantality.

This is not a terrible book by any means. It’s quite readable but it could have used a jolt or two of drama.

Land of the Silver Dragon (An Aelf Fen Mystery), by Alys Clare

Apprentice healer Lassair isn’t too alarmed when a travelling peddler relates a grisly tale of a red-bearded giant breaking into a woman’s home and caving in her skull like an eggshell; peddlers, she has observed, tend towards the dramatic. But her attitude changes when she learns that the dead woman is a distant relation. The incident makes Lassair’s family uneasy, for the intruder seemed to be searching for something. What could it be? Lassair has no idea. But as the stranger grows increasingly desperate, his search brings violence to her very home.

*Starred Review* In eleventh-century England, bard, village healer, and occasional sleuth Lassair faces a challenging case when a band of red-haired giants attack some of his distant family members, killing some and severely injuring and traumatizing others. Given the way the victims’ homes are invaded, it appears the killers are searching for something. But Lassair’s relations are poor, with few possessions, so what could the men want? But worse is to come when Lassair is kidnapped and taken to the distant and mysterious land of Iceland. Strangely, her kidnappers seem to want to befriend her, but Lassair is having none of it until a gentle old man called Thorfinn explains why Lassair’s kidnapping was necessary and that the red-haired giants were trying to find a magical stone that Lassair’s family is supposed to possess. But Lassair is sure her family doesn’t have the stone. So, where is it, and can she find and deliver it to the giants before they kill again? This is an outstanding book in an outstanding series—haunting, atmospheric, magical, and gripping, with a charismatic young heroine, an unusual premise, believable period details, and plenty of action and suspense. A cracking-good read that is recommended for all collections. --Emily Melton

Cleanly written and well balanced adventure . . .
By Patrick J. Callahan
This is a very entertaining novel. It combines sword-and-sorcery adventure with the elements of a good detective story. The protagonist is Lassair, a feisty young woman who lives at a village called Aelf Fen. This small town is well described, and seems to be typical of Eleventh Century Britain. The story launches fast with a series of robberies and plunderings by a mysterious red-bearded giant and his henchmen. It soon appears that this giant is searching for some artifact or talisman. He is quick with his sword, and several of Lassair's relatives are cut down.

Unlike the very florid writing of some fantasy adventures, Ms. Clare writes straightforward declarative sentences. It is rather clean prose. The plotting is rather remarkable. In a book of perhaps 230 pages, an amazing number of things take place. The novel might be described as compressed. Perhaps, given the complexity of the plot, the book might be too compressed. Chapter by chapter, Lassair is in Aelf Fen, then Iceland, then back to Britain again. It is like watching a film in "fast forward."

The best developed character is Lassair herself, but some others come to life. The warlord who leads the Icelanders is a convincing character. Not everything is action, either. There are a number of relationships explored that seem convincing.

This novel is one of a series involving Lassair and Aelf Fen. However, it can stand alone. It's the first book by Alys Clare I have read, but I was never lost.

The author is an archaeologist, and appears to live in Britain near the fictional setting of the novel. So she seems to be writing about "what she knows." Always a good start toward success. I liked this rather short novel, and hope you will also.

Ms.Clare gives an excellent overview of English society in the waning years of the Anglo-Saxon period. There was obviously lots of research done as well as good story telling. An excellent companion to the Hawkenlye series.

New one coming out! Yes!
By Kathleen Ingram
I always like to return to the Fens and experience Lassair's adventures.I wonder how different the Fens are from the salt meadows that I am familiar with?

Immediate post Conquest is an interesting time to explore historically, and Alys Clare is very adept at bringing that to life. Politics in England at that point in time even intrude in this very remote, inaccessible area.

Lassair learns through a series of scary adventures that her grandfather was from Iceland. Family secrets give way to violent intruders into their quiet Fenland community and her grandmother's resting place is disturbed.

Amazing Guide Pays for Itself!
By Still Learning
We saved *hundreds *of dollars following Rick's advice in this book. Big payback from his negotiated specials with certain recommended hotels, and by following his transportation advice.

At some properties it's a discount for booking directly with the hotel as a Rick Steves reader, then showing the book and paying cash for your lodging; others, it's complimentary full breakfasts that are normally extra cost. Still others where complimentary "City Cards" or regional transportation cards are included in the room rate... not specifically a Rick special, but without the Guide, how would you know?

Further savings following Rick's recs on German Rail Passes in combination with regional unlimited Die Bahn "Länder Tickets", perfect for hub-and-spoke touring region-by-region, relying solely on Germany's excellent public transportation.

Rick's "Germany" truly deserves its position as Amazon's #1 German travel guide, particularly if you embrace itinerary planning in advance to maximize your in-country experience. Rick steers you to the best of Germany, and is brutally candid about museums, cities and attractions not worth your time or money.

Also consider: Rick's German Phrase Book, also excellent.

The guide is terrific if you travel to the “selected" areas of Germany
By BusyMomOf2
The guide is terrific if you travel to the “selected" areas of Germany. However, this is NOT a complete guide for the whole country and it leaves out large parts of touristy regions such as the Allgaeu around Oberstdorf, the Bavarian Forest around Passau and the North Sea and its islands (not even Sylt is mentioned!). As a native I bought this guide to see how Americans view our country and what they deem important or curious. I had to laugh out loud when I read that Germans do not wear flip flops unless they go swimming. He’s referring to the “Badeschlappen”, yes, but don’t worry, I walk around in flip flops all the time in summer and no-one ever asked if I’m about to go swimming :-) I like how much Rick goes into detail for example when planning to see Neuschwanstein. All in all a great guide if you stick to the places he describes but arm yourself with e.g. a Fodor’s Germany in case you feel like discovering something else.

Interesting Read
By LAS Reviewer
David Kahane, an American Jewish archaeologist, suddenly finds himself in the middle of a riddle which he must solve in order to save all humankind. He has discovered Mayan artifacts in an Egyptian pyramid. Another scientist has discovered an Egyptian artifact in a Mayan pyramid. These discoveries are linked to the end of the Mayan calendar cycle on December 21, 2012, and unless the riddle is solved and acted upon, the world as we know it will end. David needs the help of a number of people so that he can defeat the son of Og, the nephalim, wizards and witches. He is aided by Aristopos, an ancient necromancer, and together they must fight The Wizard of Irem, who is determined to prevent the sealing of the netherworld.

This is an exciting and engaging story with a lot of historical background. David seems very human and real, and I enjoyed watching him wrestle with two girlfriends, Israeli and Egyptian agents, and other assorted characters. I also found a number of the secondary characters to be interesting and enjoyable, especially Dalia and Aristopos. Robert Blum's knowledge of the history and mythologies of the Middle East, ancient Mayan civilization, Japan, and an assortment of major religions is amazing. His descriptions of the various locations in the book are so detailed that it is easy to feel a part of the action. I did find that the pace slowed slightly when Blum had to detail a lot of history, but overall, the plot was action packed and fast moving.

Blum vividly brings the past to life. I found it fascinating to read about the cyclical nature of the Mayan calendar. Having just witnessed all the speculations surrounding the end of the three thousand year old cycle, it was fun to read this story about just what might have been going on behind the scenes.

Readers of fantasy, especially those readers who like ancient history, will enjoy reading this account of why the Mayan calendar cycle was able to begin again without causing the end of humankind.

Set in Victorian England and written in a voice of the times, this novel holds you captivated by the dark side of London in 1861 where gruesome murders of young women set the Victorian minds ablaze with their fascination and curiosity of the macabre.

As the newspapers treat a series of murders with their usual sensationalism, it is left to Detectives Stride and Cully to try and find the murderer by deduction and supposition alone. They are hampered by the Press and also the reluctance of the community to share information vital to the case for fear of comebacks from their peers and losing their jobs.

The novel opens with a particularly good narrative about the London rain which sets the tone for the whole novel with its depth of description. Each scene is carefully crafted to give the reader a really vivid perception of exactly what life was like for women, the poor, the rich and the desperate as they act out their parts in the story.

One character I particularly championed was Hyacinth Clout whose life was filled with guilt and servitude until a chance event brings her a moment of clarity which is to change her outlook on life forever, giving her the courage to move forward and live the life she had always assumed was out of her reach.

A novel full of tricksters, murders, lies and intrigue. I challenge you to be able to put it down once you start reading. Carol Hedges has again delivered a book which is written to be devoured in one sitting.

A suburb sequel to "Diamonds and Dust"! I really like this new series, if you like historical mysteries, this is a winner!!! Recommended - Victorian murder mystery
By CathyR
A serial killer stalks the streets of London targeting the unfortunate women working in or for the sweat shops of the garment industry. Until that is, a well to do young lady meets her maker in a theatre box. The women all are all killed in the same way but unfortunately Detective Inspector Leo Stride and his Detective Sergeant, Jack Cully, of the detective division of the Metropolitan Police, aren’t making a lot of progress. The killer leaves no evidence and no witnesses have come forward. Only Emily Benet whose friend was the first victim, is willing to help the detectives. Stride and Cully must use any and all means at their disposal to try and apprehend the killer. Once again they are persecuted by the press for failing to do so in record time, with discrediting headlines, such as ‘Ghastly Murder’ and ‘Baffled Detectives’ which do nothing but hamper the investigation.

The story is peopled with a wonderful mix of fascinating, if not always likeable, and extremely well drawn characters both primary and secondary, with names reminiscent of the Dickensian era. We have, among others, the obnoxiously repulsive Rev. Bittersplit, the appealing Mullygrub children, horrid Lobelia Clout and the awful Morbid Crevice and his equally awful wife. Hyacinth Clout is an appealing character and one of my favourites. She rises above the cruelty of her sister and improves her life immeasurably; although not quite in the way she envisioned, after receiving a reply to her response to a personal advertisement in The News of the World. Hyacinth can’t think of anything worse than ‘a life of mindless and repetitious drudgery and boredom’.

Although the main aspect of the plot revolves around the murders, Carol Hedges cleverly and seamlessly weaves in sub plots and characters which connect and/or touch one another’s lives.

As with Diamonds & Dust, the first book in the series, Victorian London is brought to life vividly and packed with period detail. The squalor and hardship which is the lot of the much less fortunate, contrasting sharply with the more affluent members of society, the class divide all too apparent. The women who work long hours sewing beautiful gowns for those more affluent members, the Foundling unfortunate enough to work for Mrs Whitlow in her less than salubrious boarding house and Tonkin, a shop boy apprenticed to Morbid Crevice for the last six years. They are all, along with the story, authentic and believable. The writing is witty and engaging, flowing smoothly through the narrative. I love the covers too, with the little symbols relating to each story. Looking forward to book three which is due out later this year.

The Siege: Agent of Rome, Book 1, by Nick Brown

AD 270. Rome has ruled Syria for over three centuries. But now the weakened empire faces a desperate threat: Queen Zenobia of Palmyra has turned her Roman-trained army against her former masters, and the once invincible legions have been crushed. Arabia, Palestine and Egypt have fallen, and now Antioch, Syria's capital, stands exposed.

Cassius Corbulo is a young intelligence agent fresh from officer training. He has been assigned the menial task of rounding up wounded legionaries, but then urgent new orders arrive. He is the only ranking Roman officer left in the line of the Palmyran advance. He must take command of the fort of Alauran, the last stronghold still in Roman hands, and hold it against the enemy until reinforcements arrive. What Cassius finds at Alauran would daunt the most seasoned veteran, let alone a 19- year-old with no experience of war.

A mere scattering of divided and demoralised legionaries remain, backed up by some fractious Syrian auxiliaries and a drunken Praetorian Guardsman. With the Palmyrans just days away, Cassius must somehow find the discipline, resourcefulness and courage to organise the garrison, save Alauran and secure Rome's eastern frontier....

a flawed and slow going read
By JPS
First posted on Amazon.co.uk on 4 September 2011

I finished this one a while ago. However, I first refrained from writing a review on it because I did not have anything favorable to say about it. This book just didn't work for me, to put it nicely. However, after having read some of the outrageously praising comments of others and feeling like we have obviously not been reading the same book, I have less scruples in writing a critical review.

The story of the young Cassius, just out of training and bearing the rank of a centurion although only a frumentari is flawed. The hero is not very credible. Even the background - Queen Zenobia's power grab of the Roman East, is hardly original. At times, the hero (or, rather the "anti-hero") seems to be a negative portrait of Siddebotom's Ballista: Roman, very junior and without any combat experience or expertise, and utterly unsure of himself. It's rather overdone. Although the story tells you that Daddy bought the position for him, he really sounds a bit like a whimp.

I generally love historical novels and particularly those taking place during Antiquity or during the Middle Ages. I generally race through these novels as quickly as I can but this one was a drag. This is perhaps because there is very little action and no actual fighting in the first half of the book. This was meant to build up the suspense, but it didn't for me: I keept waiting for something to happen, and it didn't, although the plot is hardly unpredictable!

Somehow, the characters do not really come to life, not even the hero's, although the first half of the book is largely about that. At times, the book seems overdone, including the descriptions of decay and slackness at the outpost.

Finally, even the attack (the "siege" itself) is a bit of a problem: after giving the impression that the Romans' situation was hopeless, they seem to prevail a bit too easily against supposedly veteran Palmyrans and their elite commanders, all of which seem to comptete in being as dum as possible! Frankly, would any half-decent officer send armoured cavalry on horse-back to assault a fort? Why, when he outnumbers the besieged Romans, would he not take advantage of this and assault the besieged from several sides? and the list could go on, and on...

As you will have gathered by now, I was both disappointed AND annoyed by this book. I can only hope that the author does better next time, although I will probably not be among the readers...

Siege by Nick Brown
By Scott T. Hunter
I just finished Nick Brown's debut novel "Siege". I was very pleased with the story and its complex and in depth characters. The hero Cassius Corbulo is young and not so heroic. But he will be changed forever with what he is up against..He becomes a leader of a band of Legionaries and auxilaries and must defend a lonely outpost fort against Zenobia's army. The action intensifies and climaxes with an great battle scene that will not disapoint. I can't wait to read the next installment of this series !

A Refreshing Change to the Roman Historical Fiction Genre!
By adam-p-reviews
The Siege is the first book in Nick Brown's debut the Agent of Rome series and tells the tale of Cassius Corbulo, a young Roman aristocrat who after too much boozing and womanizing is forced to join the army by his Senator father. Luckily because of his standing in Roman society, Corbulo manages to gain a place in the Imperial Security Service, which in normal circumstances would handle administration within the army such as gaining food and supplies and not really fight on the front line with normal Legionaries.

However, when Queen Zenobia of Palmyra throws off the shackles of Rome and revolts in 270 AD, Corbulo finds himself been the highest ranking officer on the Syrian boundary and is tasked with holding an important fort called Alauran on the Roman supply line. Been a fresh recruit and only just passing his officer training, Corbulo is uneasy about taking a posting as the commander of the fort and when he learns that the cohort which is guarding Alauran are veterans from the Third Legion, Corbulo's insecurity is made much worse.

When Corbulo arrives at Alauran he finds the fort in a state of severe disrepair and with the death of their commander, the Legionaries of the defences have become lazy and ill disciplined. Nevertheless, Corbulo has to find a way to repair the fort and get the Legionaries on his side as news arrives that a Palmyran force has been dispatched to attack and capture Alauran. Lacking in leadership skills, Corbulo uses other methods such as bribes to gain the support of the fort's most influential officers and manages to motivate the men and their allies to fight and repair the defences with the promise of a relief column arriving within the next week (which Corbulo is not 100% sure will arrive!). However, this may not be enough as the unexplained murder of one of Corbulo's best men reveals that there is a traitor in the camp. In addition, the sheer number of Palmyran forces which arrives to siege Alauran means Corbulo will have to use all of his limited knowledge of soldiering and the experience of his officers to stem the tide of the Syrian conquest of Roman land!

As a debut novel this book was extremely well written and thought out and different to any other Roman novels I have read. Yes, like Scarrow's Cato and Riches's Corvus, the main character was an inexperienced young aristocrat who is thrown into leadership and has to make the best of a bad situation. But what I really enjoyed about this book and what I thought made it refreshing to this genre, is that whereas Cato and Corvus evolve into great leaders charging into battle and killing numerous foes, in this book at least, Corbulo doesn't. He is still nervous and confused about what he has to do as a leader and often times would rather let others tell him what to do instead of the other way round. I thought this was a great factor because it made the book seem much more realistic because I know if I was thrown into that situation, I'd have no clue what to do! I also think this factor helps portray the situation the Roman Empire was in in 270 AD as they would fast track young aristocrats into leadership roles because they had no other experienced men to fill them. I don't know, maybe in the later books Corbulo will evolve into a great leader but in this first novel I'm glad Brown made him the nervous young man I think he should have been.

I'd suggest this book to anyone who enjoys Roman historical novels and authors such as Simon Scarrow, Anthony Riches, Ben Kane and Gordon Doherty. I'd also suggest it to anyone who is looking for a great historical fiction novel because this book was brilliant and I'm sure is going to be a part of an amazing series. By the way, I'd like to say a massive thank you to Nick Brown for getting in touch and introducing me to his work- look out for his new novel Agent of Rome, The Far Shore which will be released on July 18th!

"The Killing Land" is a page turner that western enthusiasts will thoroughly enjoy.
By Betty A. Gordon
Seewald paints impressive pictures of land in the Arizona Territory during the 1880s. The country could be brutal, yet show more beauty in one day than a sparkling jewel.

Mary MacGreggor, a young woman from the East accompanies her aunt, uncle and their children to the West to help her uncle fulfill his dream of a better life for his family. It soon becomes apparent to Mary that a melting pot of antagonism exists between the cattle ranchers, homesteaders. and sheepherders. The ranchers are not used to a woman like Mary - a woman who has a head for business and speaks her mind. She creates more unrest among the ranchers. She blames one of the cattleman, Cal Davis, for this hostility. It's not long before a hate/love relationship blossoms between Mary and Cal and continues as they face dangers destined to bring them closer together.

Seewald's characters are believable and invoke feelings of fear, love, sympathy and understanding. Two characters that particularly inspire understanding are Rebecca, Mary's cousin, and Billy Travers, a young man who helps around the farm. Rebecca suffered a severe head injury as a young child and it left her with a condition some called 'confused'. She seldom spoke to anyone until she met Billy. Their story is sweet and memorable.

"The Killing Land" is a page turner that western enthusiasts will thoroughly enjoy.

A fascinating tale of love, deceit and struggle
By Patricia Gligor
Normally, I read contemporary mystery/suspense novels but, because I had read other books by this author and found her to be an extraordinarily talented writer, I decided to read this historical suspense novel.
I am so glad I did! From the very first page, I was transported to Arizona in the 1800s and immediately involved in this fascinating tale of love, deceit and struggle. I found that I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to find out what would happen to the characters I'd quickly come to care about.
I highly recommend "The Killing Land" by Jacqueline Seewald.

1880s Arizona Territory is a battleground where the ranchers fight to keep the land free for grazing and the farmers and sheepherders wish to use it for their own livelihood. Enter an Eastern family made up of independently-minded, twenty-something Mary MacGreggor, her aunt, uncle and cousins who attempt to farm on land owned by highly-respected rancher Cal Davis, who bends over backwards to welcome the family.
Violence early-on causes the uncle’s death and Aunt Elizabeth is raped while the rest of the family is absent. As Cal seeks to help Mary and her family adjust and find the villains, other townspeople become involved in the escalating range war. Wooed by Cal’s foreman, Wolf Raullins, Mary is conflicted by her romantic feelings for Cal, whom she instinctively mistrusts as a rancher and whose manly take-charge attitude conflicts with her own staunch self-reliance.
Plenty of action propels these well-drawn characters in Jaceuqline Seewald’s spot-on Wild West period piece. Shootings, abductions and deadly plots pitching neighbor against neighbor keep the pace fast and suspenseful. Seewald is a prolific award-winning author; The Killing Land is a must-read.

Welcome of the fantasy world of the “shanty” Irish of San Francisco’s Mission District.
"Fog Town Blues" is a collection of stories about the cops, the drunks, the turbulent families with their hard working blue-collar parents and rebellious their children fighting for a chance to make it out of one of the last great Irish ghettos in America.
It is a world that exists now only in the mind and heart of Mission District aging expatriate writer Jimmy Larkin, the estranged son of legendary Mission beat cop "Whitey” Larkin who was notorious for keeping the peace among the brawling Irish and Italians rather than enforcing the law.
Here too you’ll meet the enigmatic “Granny” Cavanaugh who claims to be the model for Fitzgerald’s Daisy Buchanan in “The Great Gatsby” but now is an aging denizen of the neighboring Dogpatch neighborhood. Granny hears banshees in the night, talks to the occasional wandering ghost killed in the notorious 1880s “Blue Mud Wars of Irish Hill” and drinks Red Breast Irish Whiskey straight up.
It’s the world of the perpetually unemployed and half-drunk Charlie “Half Pint” Murphy and his long suffering wife Mona Weinstein, the only hyphenated Irish-Romanian family in the Mission District. And their children, the lovely but sharp-tongued Siobhan who is Jimmy Larkin’s lost love, and her ne’er do well brother, the charming but doomed petty crook Francis X. “Blackie” Murphy.
Here you’ll meet the haunted “Pigeon Paul” as he goes about his daily rounds of harvesting the City’s winged rats for feed himself and his personal demons.
And then there’s Paul’s neighbor the flamboyant Dorcas Kovescu, gypsy landlady of a ramshackle converted Queen Anne boarding house in the Mission and maker of Eastern European "poppets", effigies to ward of evil spirits. The poppet will lead her and reluctant ally James “Doobs” Sheehan on a wild search for legendary 'Butcher of Bucharest' who is said to be hiding out in Dogpatch.
And last but not least, meet the strange little Irishman Colm O’Boyle who is town on a quest of his own to locate his clan’s missing bean side, or banshee. Along the way O’Boyle manages to knockout Norman Mailer in a back alley brawl outside North Beach’s famous City Lights Book Store before heading out with Mailer and young Jimmy for a wild night of drinking and a visit to the City’s once notorious Irish Hill.

A short story collection of approximately 35,000 words.

As a person who was born and raised in San Francisco and Irish, I enjoyed the author's understanding of the 1930s and 1940s San Francisco irish. Also an easy read if you don't mind an occasional misused word (probably spell checking problem).

A new sun rises on the lives and fates of four players in this game of wit and intrigue.

Duchess Diane de Tremontaine, the crowning gem of her city's high class, sits in her manor's window on The Hill and looks over her domain with eyes that cut and a mind that schemes. From below, and far away from the glitz of wealth, a poor country farm girl named Micah looks only toward her family, the harvest, and the complex web of math that entrances her.

At the Docks, Ixkaab Balam surveys that same city from the deck of her family's merchant vessel and sees a land to manipulate for fortune and fun. And at the University, a passionate scholar named Rafe bristles at the classism that dictates his world and harbors revolution in his blood.

Compelling, original & world building galore
By Rebecca
I don't read much speculative fic, so much so that I had to ask for recs to discover this, but I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I don't know if I'll continue because there are three major characters, and I was only really compelled by one and that was Micah's POV. But the world building here is fantastic and rich, making it so easy and fun to visualise. A truly original, interesting read. If you want to check it out and see if this is something you would enjoy, the first episode is free. (less)

A literary event
By Kindle Customer
Episode 1 of a wonderful new serial novel. Intriguing characters and a fascinating setting - I can't wait to see what comes next. Also, and not incidentally, one of the best portrayals of an autistic character that I've ever read. Two enthusiastic thumbs up!

with terrific characters and excellent worldbuilding
By Narrelle
I picked this up attracted by the idea of a swashbuckling LGBTQIA adventure written in a shared-world way by multiple authors.

The result is indeed a fabulous swashbuckler of a book, with terrific characters and excellent worldbuilding. The writers overlap timelines occasionally, offering difference perspectives for characters. The styles don't always meld quite smoothly and sometimes information is repeated, but on the whole the shared writing works very well.

The various and intertwined stories of Rafe the scholar, Micah the genius mathematician, Tess the forger from Riverside, Ixkaab the first daughter of a first daughter of a noble foreign house, William, the Duke of Tremontaine and his calculating wife, Diane, engage from the beginning and grow more and more compelling. SOme characters become more likable; some much less so. There are plots and schemes, love and betrayal, politics and social machinations in heaping handfuls.

My only real criticism is that the story ends on a cliffhanger. I generally strongly dislike cliffhangers, preferring stories that stand alone within the world that has been built. Having said that, I absolutely have to get the next book to find out what happens next to this cast of characters, and it's making me not a little cross to have to wait till 2017 to be satisfied.
