About the Author
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Richard Hugh Blackford grew up in Jamaica during the late 1950’s to the turn of the century and had a ring-side seat to the socio-political events that not only shaped the course of the islands development but provided the canvas on which this story has been painted. He was educated in Jamaica at Kingston College and Camperdown High Schools and later attended the College of Arts, Science and Technology where he received a Certificate in Marketing. He then went on to the University of the West Indies where he completed a Bachelors degree in Management Studies and years later read for a Masters degree in Education at the University Of Phoenix, Arizona. His education not only informed his business foundation but exposed him to the critical issues that shaped the island and impacted his social and political consciousness. To this end he has written as much from his personal experiences as he has from the historical developments in the island over the period.

For a non Jamaican this novel gives an account of "how we came to this" beyond the sandy beach and paradise" .
An historical account, graphically written in Richard's plain speak, weaving a tale to capture and provoke thought.

A quick and easy read... The story is captivating and compelling, forcing us to look at ourselves and see the thread of deceit and violence that connects the social classes in Jamaica. I thoroughly enjoyed the details, the language and the suspense. Go Richard...this one is a winner.

Gritty, explosive....a fascinating read

Gritty, raw, explosive...a fascinating read!! Truth or fiction?!?! Rock solid in its plot - this book is a page turner from the start.

A mixture of conspiracy, betrayal, back door deals, murder and mayhem, in a background of upper society juxtaposed with the socio-economic environment of inner city living and interspersed with historical details, this book is well researched and written.

Oft times speaking in the vernacular of his people, Jamaican author Richard Hugh Blackford breathes authenticity into the lives of his characters with emotions ranging from anger to understanding, fear to acceptance, and rage to resignation to survival. This is a story that will entertain, (in spite of the many graphic moments) as well as educate about life in pre and post colonial Jamaica, and, although not a history book, shed some light on why we are where we are today as a nation.

You cheer and grieve for the inner city inhabitants, hurt for their circumstances, rejoice in their small victories, all the while wondering what will break the vicious cycle started so long ago by men contemptuous of their skin color.

Gave me enough but left me hungering for more.... Richard, you have outdone yourself and up the ante. This is a really good book and one I wholeheartedly recommend!

Great Reading

Although not a big reader of fiction, this book was recommended to me by a friend. I loved the story line and even though you thought you had the ending figured out, the twist and turns, surprises and ah ha moments kept you from knowing everything about a character. I loved the insert showing the background of a certain character. It allowed you to understand the person more, but not give them any more sympathy deserved based on background. The strength of the main character lets you be taken to a time where people need to stand up for their personal rights and dignity. Looking forward to reading more from this new author and hoping that they will be more to follow "On the Bluffs of Cane Creek."

Read in one sitting

"On the Bluffs of Cane Creek" is a story I didn't want to put down because Rachel Rain Martin drew me in immediately and kept me wanting to find out more. Martin did a excellent job of portraying life in the U.S during the early 1800's. The story of Adaline, an ordinary girl who had an extraordinary life, was told beautifully through her own words. The story has some twists that kept me guessing. With these twists, sometimes I rooted for John Hill, one suitor, then other times, I rooted for Balik, the other suitor. You'll have to read this captivating book to find out what happens!

Marvelous story!

From the first moment I picked up and started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. I was immediately caught up in the story of Adaline...her family drama, her experiences with the Cherokee Indians, her loves and her losses, all told through brilliant writing and historical accuracy. Although it is only Rachel Martin's first novel, I can only believe that it will not be her last! Bring on the next one, Rachel...I can hardly wait!

A wonderful story of a fantasy world with just enough magic ...

A wonderful story of a fantasy world with just enough magic mixed into the political intrigue. It was fast-paced, took on the views of a variety of characters (while focusing mostly on the two main girls), and had a truly enjoyable story to tell. I want to know more about the characters, the valley this book took place in, and the world beyond. Reading this, you really get a sense of the characters. And it really is a diverse cast. I was pleased to find characters of varying genders (transgender included from the very beginning) and sexualities. And better yet? Their gender or sexuality didn't play the main trait of the character. It was just another aspect of who they were, like the color of their eyes or their favorite food. Just the way it should be.
There is not much romance, and any sex is only subtly alluded to. There is definitely violence, but it is by no means explicit. However, this is a country on the brink of revolution, with one of the main characters a member of the city guard. Injuries happen.
While I haven't heard any confirmation, the ending hints at a sequel. I definitely hope this is true as I do not want to be finished with this story.

jm douglas has created a fast-paced magical story that quickly draws the reader into a building revolution. Within the environment of a divided nation and underground rebellion, a diverse group of complicated and well developed characters confront themes such as identity, childhood, morality and war. This is a wonderful book for teenagers due to its finding/confrontation-of-self messages, however I greatly enjoyed it as a 24-year-old. It was a breath of fresh air to read a story that employs characters of a variety of sexual and gender orientations, which is unfortunately uncommon in fantasy literature.

This book is one of my new favorites. It's entertaining while also containing thought-provoking and meaningful undertones, making it great for discussion. I highly recommend it to young adult and adult readers alike!

For someone who doesn't get to read for pleasure often, this was a fast and engaging read. I appreciated that there was gender diversity in the characters and representation was positive for trans characters. I loved reading how the characters grew during the revolution and watch how their relationships changed throughout the years. The ending of the book definitely left me wanting to hear more of what happens in the world JM Douglas has created. Can't wait to read more of their works in the future!

Slim volume, not much beyond the main sights

I am planning a week in Normandy and thought this book would be useful. Nearly half is dedicated to D-Day sights. Beyond that, only a few cities are mentioned with scant information. Caen has no information on the various abbeys and the cathedral. There's more info available on the entire province in my Eyewitness France guide in the few pages they devote to Normandy.

Book arrived on time and in perfect new condition. I find the Rick Steves books to be reliable and enjoy the information that is provided. This book is small and will be great for travel. It covers places to stay and eat as well as attractions with a bit of background on history and local area.

STILL THE GREATEST CHRISTIAN NOVEL OF ALL TIME

In 1880, a retired Union General by the name of Lew Wallace completed his first historical novel while serving as governor in the Territory of New Mexico. He wrote it in response to questions raised by a famous agnostic sharing a train ride from Chicago to Indianapolis. At the time, Wallace wasn't as knowledgeable of the facts surrounding the life of Christ as he had thought. After doing extensive research, he was inspired to write what has become the definitive religious epic. Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ helped Wallace sort out his own beliefs about God and Christ, and inspired others to do the same. Today, it stands as the most widely read novel of the 19th Century, and one of the most popular works of all time. It has never been out of print in its 130 year history, and has been made into several plays and four films.

Ben-Hur reflects the life and journey of Lew Wallace. At the Battle of Shiloah, through an accident, he and his men arrived too late to help, making the Union losses significantly higher than they would have been. As a result, Wallace was disgraced. Judah Ben-Hur, through the accident of a loose roof tile, loses his home and property, his family is sent to prison, and he is sent to the galleys. Through a miracle of courage and circumstances, Wallace worked his way back, became a successful statesman and author, and is today remembered in the Hall of Statues in Washington, DC. Through a similar miracle, Ben-Hur works his way back to save his family and get revenge over those who caused their calamity. Ben-Hur is a story of courage and revenge, but it is also a story of redemption and salvation. I believe Wallace saw his life the same. Ben-Hur crosses paths with Christ more than once, so that, in the end, his hate and destructiveness are swallowed up in Christ's love and forgiveness. I believe Wallace saw the same miracle in his life.

Ben-Hur did not take off immediately; but, after several years of word-of-mouth, everyone was reading it, especially pastors and their congregations. In 1900, two producers, Klaw and Erlanger, bought the rights to bring Ben-Hur to the New York stage. It was an amazing production that boasted five teams of horses and chariots on stage at once for the great chariot race. They used treadmills for the teams, with moving scenery. There was also a great sea battle that was considered spectacular. The success of the play inspired showmen in the fledgling industry of motion pictures to take note.

The first film version of Ben-Hur was a 15-minute pirated version in 1907. This lead to a law suit by Wallace that set the precedent for future book-to-movie copyright cases. Eventually, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer bought the rights, and produced the first legitimate adaptation in 1925, directed by Fred Niblo and starring Ramon Novarro. In 1959, William Wyler directed a second MGM production of the book, this time starring Charlton Heston. It won 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Director.

I found the novel by Lew Wallace to be more charming and less "big" than the 1959 film. Even the characters were more life-size. I pictured a Robert Taylor in the role of Ben-Hur rather than Charlton Heston. The only actor from the film that seemed to fit the novel was Finlay Currie as Balthasar, the wise man from Egypt. He was perfect. The entire first of eight books, into which Ben-Hur is divided, is occupied by the three wise men, of which only Balthasar is carried through to the rest of the book, and plays a significant role. In addition to playing Balthasar, Currie also narrates the film.

There is far more focus on Christ in the novel, the 1900 stage play (in which he is played by a beam of light) and the 1925 film than in the 1959 version. The book wrestles with the question of whether He will be an earthly King or a Savior of souls. Ben-Hur, who is a Sadducee, hopes he will be an earthly King, and actually trains three legions of Galileeans in preparation to help Him overthrow the occupying Romans. But Balthasar is convinced Christ will be a Savior of souls, and tries to convince Ben-Hur of the same. It is not until the miraculous events of the last of the eight books that he accepts that fact, and accepts Christ as his Savior.

To date, Ben-Hur is still the greatest Christian novel ever written, as well as one of the all-time great classics. Men still struggle with the question of whether Christ is an earthly King or a Savior of souls. To find out, we must all take similar journeys to Ben-Hur and Balthasar, and be hindered along the way by various Messalas. Not many of us will be like Balthasar and "get" it so quickly. Most of us will be more like Ben-Hur: accept what life throws at us with defiance, deal with it as best we can, struggle, realize we can't do it on our own, accept God's salvation, transcend our troubles through faith, and be transformed into someone new, someone Christ-like. Ben-Hur isn't just about Lew Wallace's journey from failure to freedom; like Pilgrim's Progress, it reflects the common journey all Christians must take.

Still Powerful After 120 Years

In 1880 Union General Lew Wallace was stationed at a Western outpost when he began writing Ben Hur to dispel the boredom of his job. General Wallace who fought in some of the major campaigns of the Civil War was also questioning the meaning of his faith when the novel was written.
There are few who do not know the basic premise of this novel and fewer still who have not seen the monumental MGM film based on it. This story chronicles the life of Judah Ben Hur and his desire for revenge against the Roman Messala and all of Rome for the wrongs done him and his family.
In plot the story is simple enough. Ben Hur has been wrongly convicted of an attempt to kill the Roman Governor of Judea and sentenced to death on the Roman galleys. His fortune has been stolen and his family locked away in a dungeon. Ben Hur survives the galleys and defeats his enemy in the now famous chariot race at the Circus at Antioch.
If this were the end of Wallace's story we would have been left with a decent story of revenge and nothing more. However, Wallace incorporates into his story (bookends it really) with the story of the Passion of Jesus.
Wallace uses the coming of Jesus to examine the issues of his own faith. To analyze the dual nature of Jesus as King and Redeemer. To Ben Hur and the fiercely nationalist Jews of his time the world was waiting for a King to come to overthrow the power of Rome. Ben Hur sees this king as an element of his revenge against Rome and uses his restored fortune to build an army in support of the king.
By the end of the novel Ben Hur realizes that the King was not to come to overthrow Rome but to be a Redeemer of souls. That the kingdom to be created was not to be one of this world.
Wallace's narrative takes some time to get used to. It is sluggish and detail oriented. Literally everything is described. If you are looking for a fast read this book is not for you. If you are looking for a novel in the grand scale which also works as a powerful religous meditation give this one a try. The book was a great best seller when it was written and it can still be powerful 120 years later.

Simply the Best

James Ellroy's "The Black Dahlia" is almost too dark, too gripping and too believable. It stands out among a crowd of mysteries (sub-genre police procedural) as simply a great novel. Most mysteries I put down and forget that I've read them. The characters from Ellroy's noir vision of L.A. in the late 1940s and early 1950s are indelibly etched in my mind, as is Ellroy's characterization of the period and location itself. This is the most visceral book I've ever read.
I picked up this book myself from Partners and Crime's Top 100 shelf (P&C is an awesome mystery bookstore in Manhattan's Greenwich Village). I loaned my copy to a friend, who gave it back to me a week later and said he didn't want to read the rest of the series or any other mystery novel again in his life -- this one was perfect and anything else would just ruin his ability to savor "The Black Dahlia". I loaned it to a second friend who finished it in a week, and then went out and bought the complete Ellroy ouevre. This is not a one-night read unless you have strong eyes, strong coffee, heroic concentration and an iron will.
If you get a chance, hear Ellroy read from these books in person.
Sequencing Ellroy's books is tough, because they're all similar in terms of time frame, setting, and characters. The L.A. trilogy plus one is:

Gritty, tough, very intense.

There I was you see, I walked into the book store, the whole place smelled like old moldy books. So I see this old broad behind the counter. Had a couple of miles on her, sort of like me. So I ask her, trying not to sound too stupid, "Do you have any Elway books?" She looked at me, smiled and said "who?". Elway, you know, wrote L.A.Confidential". She said "Oh, you mean Ellroy". She then walks over to the used paper back mystery section and said, "All I have by Ellroy is "The Black Dahlia". It's based on a murder that happened in L.A. a few years ago". So I picked my brain, thinking, " yeah I read something about this Ellroy guy in the newspaper a couple of years ago". So I buy the book, looks like it is on its last legs, pages are almost yellow and ready to fall out. I take the thing home, read the back cover, get an idea of the story and start to read it. Then after reading a few pages, I'm hooked. I'm turning page after page, my eyes feel like two hot burning coals. I'm sweating, my brain feels like it's been scooped out, slammed against the wall and it's oozing down like cauliflower mixed with vanilla yogurt. I feel like laying two raw pieces of pork chops alongside my head so I can cool off. I read this book in two days. My whole life came to a stop. Never did have a clue on how it would end; yeah there were little clues here and there, but my little pea-picking brain never picked them up. Now I says to myself, "this Ellroy guy can really write". Now I'm afraid to read any more of his books. I don't want my life to come to a stop again. I'm an old retired copper, read my share of mysterys in my day, but I've got stuff to do around the house, I can't just read all day. So be aware ! Be prepared when you read this book. It's gritty, it's tough, it makes most mystery thrillers read like Peter Pan. I'll keep this book forever...Very intense, not for the light hearted! Make sure that you are ready for this. It ain't like picking daisies or taking a walk in the park with fido. This is a knock down, drag out, real life thriller that will knock your socks off. Maybe someday in the middle of winter when it's raining baby elephants and I can't do anything else, I'll even think about reading another Ellroy book.I don't think that my heart can take it......

Ellroy's First Masterpiece

This first novel in the much-praised "L.A. Quartet" is one of the great American works of art. Up there with Twain, Fitzgerald, Chandler, Hammett and Hemingway. "Dark" is too bright a word for Ellroy's fiction. Another reviewer called Ellroy "the Caravaggio of modern fiction." That says it all.
In the "Dahlia", a real woman named Betty Short, whose butchered corpse appeared in a vacant lot one morning in real-life L.A. circa 1947, Ellroy found his essential enigma and his battering muse. This famous, unsolved murder victim becomes in the novel, a terrifying emblem for his own oedipal quest, a quest that he fearlessly explored in his memoir *My Dark Places*. It is a work of genius, and we are all the richer for it. Its scope is epic. Its tone is sharpened ebony. Nothing in Ellroy's previous novels prepares you for this. It is also a book that repays multiple readings. It's only outdone by each subsequent novel. Full-blown addiction is the only way I can describe my response to Ellroy's fiction. It will jazz you and haunt you and inhabit your dreams.
