Something I would have never thought of!!!

Let me start by saying I have NEVER read another book quite like this one. It has a small amount of romance, but that is certainly not what the book is centered around. Each author writes a different part of the book...a different story, within a story, if you will. We begin with Thomitus Cailius, around 67 a.d., living in Rome. He is married to Josephine and is a soldier. He has been tasked with finding out all of the bad things that Nero is doing and reporting back to the Senate, so they can take him down. During his stay with Nero, he commits the sins of sloth and gluttony.

Next, we meet Sir Thomas Russell, married to Kelleigh, living around the 1580's. He is a jeweler and gets appointed as the royal jewelry maker for Queen Elizabeth. His pride overtakes him and he loses everything.

3rd comes Lt. Thomas Anderson, seeing the pattern yet? Thomas is married to Casey, who is expecting their first child. He is fighting in the Civil War, but wants nothing more than to be at home with his wife. Unfortunately, his oldest brother is the favorite of the family and greed and envy rule his life.

4th is Tommy "Two Guns" Mazza in the 1930's. He falls in love with Nichole. Tommy is a boxer, but has a heart of gold when it comes to Nichole. He will stop at nothing to protect her and her son. His past is what gets him.

Last is Thomas "T-Dogg" Evans, who is a man-whore, but is in love with Tia. Lust is his downfall.

Ok, so this book is extremely unique and has one helluva twist at the end. Totally did not see that ending coming. I thought I had if figured out, but nope, I was wrong. I loved that each author had their own story, but that they were all entertwined. It was a unique approach and did very well for me.

It's all about sinning and redemption. Each character had their own flaws, however no matter how much the person battled with the sin and tried to overcome it, it was a futile battle. This book talks about sins that, as human beings, we commit each and every day. And the repercussions -- outside the realm of actuality or not -- of such sins. But there is also insight into the redemptive aspect of sinning. I think anyone would be pleased with the amount of thought and insight each author put into the story. Although it is not a subject or genre I will read often, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and give it a 5 star rating!

I was gifted this book by a friend who loved it so much she thought that I should read it. I'm glad she did!

There are seven deadly sins. Each one can condemn your soul. I have seen/read many interpretations of the seven deadly sins. This one is brilliant!

Without giving anything away, each story was unique yet they all tie in together and when I reached the end, my mind was blown! A definite must read!

Masterful writing by all.

This book has 7 different stories, well make that six parts and a bonus short story. Five authors got together and created one of the more memorable books I’ve read in 2015. Before reading this I have only read one of the authors in this collection but I have plans to read more of the others in the upcoming year. To be fair, there will be spoilers in this review. If you’d like to avoid the spoilers the just know this, this book holds heartache and hope, condemnation and redemption, it shows the failings of people and the grace of those who love them most. I can’t recommend this book enough to anyone who enjoys seeing bits and pieces of real life painted with the colors of imagination, faith, and love.

I will readily admit that after the first story I really considered if I wanted to finish this book. There was no happy ending and it kind of hurt my soul a little bit. I consider this to be a positive though. Casey Bond did such a fantastic job with her writing and description, she didn’t write something fluffy, I almost forgot I wasn’t reading actual history. The same goes for the second story by Jo Michaels. It really felt as though I was reading something from history. I was so much in the mind frame in regards to believing it could be a snippet from the life of someone in that era I came to accept that the ending would not be what I wanted but what life would hand out to the characters. I also noticed the female characters were wearing the same necklace. It wouldn’t be until later that I put together the main character would always be Tom or some version of that name. It was definitely a mind blowing thing when I discovered that! Tia Silverthorne Bach kind of hurt my heart more with her story. She absolutely captured how doing the right thing all the time despite feeling like you were never wanted can make you have to constantly keep on your toes and never give in to the feeling of life is not fair. Kelly Risser’s Tommy Two Guns Mazza and N.L. Greene’s Thomas T-Dogg Evans were both tear jerkers and heartwarming and equally heart wrenching! Thank goodness there was at least one happy-ish ending! But it’s the 6th part, Judgement, which brought it all home. All of the authors got together to create this ending piece. You can see each author’s distinctive voice throughout this part. I found out the significance of the necklace and of the name Tom. It was the most tearful part of my reading but it wasn’t completely sad tears I cried. I suggest you take each part as it is without trying to figure out too much because seeing the revelations during this chapter was like turning on a light with a dimmer switch. Everything slowly comes into focus a little at a time but completed my understanding of the whole picture. I loved this book so much!

to the depth of thought that good literature provokes

As an accomplished writer, a lifelong student of the Civil War, and as a degreed divinity student and teacher, Kent Gramm brings to the reader a blend of insights seldom achieved in a book about war. In Sharpsburg, the reader will find him/herself personally drawn into the battles of South Mountain, Dunker Church, Sunken Road, the Rohrbach Bridge, and the Cornfield. Those battles, which claimed more lives than any other event in American military history, were the prelude to the Emancipation Proclamation. From the very beginning the book compels us to face the questions each of us battle in our own lives. The metaphors, religious or literary, take one, as Gramm's writing usually does, to the depth of thought that good literature provokes. In its reading, one needs little reflection to be introspective.

Kent's gift as a writer engages us in Sharpsburg through the perspective of northern and southern soldier...an ideal format for a battle where the common soldiers are more the hero than their military leaders whose decisions leave us to question. The horror of the events is somehow eased for the reader in the free style of the narrative, allowing for quick movement through the gore without distorting the reality of hellacious casualties. The subtle humor Gramm interjects throughout helps keep our own emotions in check so as not to miss the main message. His sensitivity to man and man's fallibility make the story and the story-tellers real. Despite presenting two perspectives, one comes away recognizing the importance of this time for establishing the rights of all people to be free. And, Gramm makes that relevant to the present. He somehow manages to get to our soul and he leaves us with poignant passages to change us.

This clearly is a poet delivering a message about life.

Kent Gramm, who has written a number of probing books on the Civil War, has produced a classic work on the single bloodiest day of the Civil War, the Battle of Antietam, the battle that moved Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.

What's astonishing about 'Sharpsburg' is that Gramm vividly brings home to the reader the horrors of Civil War combat (as well as the courage of the soldiers) in poetry. Working mostly in free verse, Gramm brings us to Miller's Cornfield, to the Sunken Road, to Burnside's Bridge. You will, as you read this short work, feel a strong sense of the vicious realities facing these men.

Gramm gives voice to the common soldiers of the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia; their angers, their fears, their ideals, their prejudices, their humor. None are given names, yet all come off the page as fully human.

As I read 'Sharpsburg,' I found myself hearing in Gramm's voice echoes of Bruce Catton, of Paul Fussell, of John Keegan, but also of the British war poets of the World War I Western Front. Civil War readers, this is poetry you will remember. Poets, this is history told with grace. This would be an excellent addition to an advanced placement high school or to an undergraduate syllabus.

This is a very creative and moving expression of both the history and experience of one of the most destructive battles of the Civil War. Using poetry (sonata form) Kent Gramm gives voice to a Rebel soldier and a Union soldier, enabling the battle to come alive through each of their experiences. The battle, the battlefield, and the experiences take shape in a way that is both informative and deeply moving. Moreover the poetry makes real the heart, mind, and strength of those who participated in and survived the most deadly of days.

Brilliantly Crafted Thriller

In Roy Bright's "Judas" the characters come to life in a thrilling and intriguing take on the age old story of Judas who betryayed Christ. Each chapter is brilliantly crafted keeping the reader on the edge of their seat waiting to see what will happen next. Can't wait to see this in a blockbuster film! A fascinating read.

Fun but needs an editor

What a terrific concept. Judas Iscariot Is duped by the ancients to deliver Jesus of Nazareth to the Romans. As Judas' body refuses to succumb to death we learn he is fated to walk the earth, forever alone with no chance of inner peace.

What a vast disappointment for the reader to be subjected to repeated words and phrases, mis-placed modifiers, British language and spelling for no apparent reason. Having said that I really enjoyed this idea. It goes to show that copy readers and good editors are a necessary component to our overall enjoyment and full immersion in the world of the novel.

Para los emigrantes cubanos, esta obra de ficción, escrita con derroche de cubanía, nos hará identificarnos con sus personajes, pues de una manera u otra, hemos vivido experiencias y tribulaciones similares en nuestra peregrinación por el mundo.

El autor muestra un dominio perfecto del castellano, gracias a esto la lectura de este libro se vuelve una gratisima experiencia.
Nos adentramos en la vida de los protagonistas del libro, personas sencillas pero a la vez llenas de los mismos conflictos que todos los cubanos de la era postcastrista cargamos a la espalda. Es unico en muchos aspectos...cada lector se llevara algo diferente. Yo pude oler las calles de Cuba en estas paginas. El olor de la Habana!!!

This Book Changed My View on Immigration.

I am an American, so I have never had a view of what people who emigrate to the United States have to experience that causes them to leave their own countries. However, I did live in an area that was similar to what some of these people were going through. Except, I did not want to leave my country, I just wanted to leave my neighborhood for a much better neighborhood. This book offers me an inside, personal look at what people are having to endure and risks they are willing to take to get to a better life.

What Olas taught me was what people are willing to sacrifice so they can get out of their corrupt countries. Corrupt leadership is only interested in pay-off's and the bigger, better deal for themselves while all the time they are passing laws that restrict and hold citizen's hostage. This leaves them at the mercy of politicans who care nothing for them.

This family was willing to sacrifice their own lives fighting against sharks just to get out of Cuba; even if they lost their own lives in the jaws of said shark. Their situation must have been really dire to have to risk life and limb for a better life in a strange place that they have never seen. I have gotten pretty emotional while reading this book.

As an American, I would make two suggestions:

1) This book should be published in English so English-speaking people can understand what these people go through

2) To know just how blessed we are to live where we do because there is always someone out there who is struggling so much more than we are.

I do highly recommend this book because I want people to know that there are thousands and thousands of whole families looking to make a better life for themselves in a place where they are treated as valued citizens. My heart goes out to the people who have to suffer through the events laid out in this book.

Easy reading though as a hugh fan of historical fiction I get annoyed when known facts are not used in the story. As a fan of Elizabeth Chadwick and Shoron Penman, who have written brilliant and factual books of these people I found this series disappointing.

Nice introductory story!

Decent story. The book needs a little editing. Some odd capital letters. Some wrong words...homer/home, Jam/I am, chairing/staring, oiler/offer, stem-looking/stern-looking, and hardy/hardly. William Marshall was not a person of fiction as stated in the introductory matter, but was indeed one of the greatest knights in English history.

I am an avid reader of historical fiction and enjoy the works of Sharon Penman and Philippa Greggory, among others. However, I could not get past chapter 2 of this book. I know that it is sometimes hard to follow the actual known historical facts, but the changes made were unnecessary and ridiculous.
